  2. Hi, I have a couple of FreeAgent Desk external hard drives with the following drives embedded in them: ST31000528AS (Firmware: CC44) ST31000333AS (Firmware: SD35) I saw both have firmware updates available to download from Seagate that are labeled as "important": CC44 => CC49 SD35 => SD3B I tried both EXE and ISO update methods (with the drives still in the FreeAgent enclosure) and both failed (big read FAILURE message in the DOS window). Can you please verify the following? In order to upgrade the firmware, I'll need to physically detach them from the external enclosures (e.g. like this) and connect them as internal HDDs (via SATA) It is worthwhile to partake in this endeavor, as failing to do so might cause my hard drive to brick one day (especially the SD35 from what I gather) Thanks!
  3. Hi, I was attempting to write an .img file (akin to .iso image) to my SD card using Win32diskimager (found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/files/?source=navbar) By mistake I wrote the image to my external HDD (Seagate BackupPlus 3TB). BTW, as you can read from SourceForge page, many others have made same mistake. The HDD was not modified and had the factory setting; that is, it had one partition and was NTFS file. The content of IMG file were no more than 73MB, but it created a FAT32 partition of 500MB. My Linux and Win8 machines both see (but don't mount) the 500MB partition and show the rest as "unallocated" or "raw". Windows wants to reformat this space. I have access to another drive that is just like this (I bought two orginally) - that is, I have another spare 3TB Seagate BackupPlus that is empty. Using CloneZilla I have copied (bit-for-bit, or sector by sector) a clone of the 'damaged' drive to the 'spare' drive. I will be using this clone for all recovery purposes and will leave the 'damaged' disk in a safe place. TestDisk doesn't find any partitions (both quick and deep scan). My understanding is that NTFS writes a copy of partition at the end of the sector (or was it copy of MBR to the end?). Considering that TestDisk is not finding this partition (or for that matter vloume/FS); how can I recreate a partition? Also, I think the files might be 'carved' or 'recovered', but this would imply I lose both the original file names as well as the directory structure. If the partition recovery is a lost cause, is there a way to recover the files and directories with their original intact names? Thanks in advance....I do know that I have done something really stupid and blame is all on me.
  4. System: Dell l502x XPS 15 (Early, 2011) HD Seagate momentus (st9750420as) 750gb What happened? Yesterday I tried to update the HDD firmware(link ate the end of the post) so I downloaded the recommended version for my pc. There were two options an .exe file (the one I used) and a usb option that creates a usb boot drive with the firmware. So I followed all the steps, the pc reboot and got stuck in a black screen like this: (with "seagate" text flashing...) After 2 hours waiting I shutdown the pc and after that it no longer boots the windows, it stucks in a black screen with a flashing underscore. Here are some pictures of the bios. First Thing I've tried, Instal the firmware via USB boot drive, its the usb folder in the firmware file (bottom of the post) dind't work. Second try was to create a windows recovery usb, the result was this: 1º nothing been shown (os, drive size) 2º trying to acess C: from cmd returns something like this: "The volume does not have a system of known files" "be shure that all system fille drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted." Ps: "E:" is my pendrive. 3º try, usb seatools Firmware link: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=C6RX3&fileId=3292829046&osCode=W764&productCode=xps-l502x&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SA&DCP=DNDTAG
  5. Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfUWdDy-0Rc The HD shown in the video is a Seagate Freeagent GoFlex portable (photo), model STAA1000101 (FreePlay 1000GB). It had the busy problem, similar to the 7200.11 drives. I tried the known solution using the serial port, but after a few tries, it stoped spinning and started beeping. I am *sure* that I used the correct cable and connections (except for switching Rx/Tx one time, which AFAIK wouldn't cause this kind of damage). Questions: - Is this beep a known signal? What does it mean? - Would replacing the PCB, with a BIOS transfer to the new board, possibly fix it? I know it's hard to tell, but if it has any chance of being fixed, I'll do it, since I'm out of options. Thanks in advance.
  6. Long story short - I have a "1TB" (1000 Gbytes) Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (ST31000340AS) that I can't access and I need help recovering darta. I have Googled this around and found the following posts that seem to be useful but link to content that is no longer available: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807-the-solution-for-seagate-720011-hdds/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/143880-seagate-barracuda-720011-read-me-first/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/133387-debricking-the-seagate-drives/ I may try to imply the details if I have t but, if any of you can help, I would appreciate that very much. Details: Drive details: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1000 Gbytes S/N: 9QJOQKB3 ST31000340AS P/N: 9BX158-303 Firmware: SD15 Date Cide: 08456 WWN: 5000C5000CCFA291 Product of Thailand Label on the PCB says: 100468979 H 7840Y1DL Original symptom was that the OS (Windows 7) would start booting up from this drive but would stop some time later. Was never able to find which driver it was loading when it stopped, only the driver loaded before, and that is not relevant. I tried connecting the drive to my notebook using CablesToGo USB-to-SATA adapter but it refused to show up (other drives worked), yet it continued to partially boot the OS in its "home" computer. I was able to boot Linux based recovery tools from a DVD. It would see the hard drive and I was able to access and copy some files from it and copy them to other hard drives I have... but this would only work for a few minutes. Then all access to the drive would stop and I would have to turn the system off, then on and I would have another few minutes of access. Not sure if this was related to time, heat, accessed area of disc or anything else but it was so. I, unfortunately, had another accident and I had lost the copies I made too. For that reason I have replaced the motherboard (well, the entire computer really short of the case and drives). The new one could not see the drive at all (didn't try the Linux tools yet). I bought a used re-certified drive of same specs (another one of those, just different serial number and firmware) and swapped the electronics. Details on that one are (differences highlighted in red): Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1000 Gbytes S/N: 9QJ2GZHP ST31000340AS P/N: 9BX158-303 Firmware: SD1A Date Cide: 0918-5 Site Code: KRATSG CSO: 0944-3 WWN: 5000C5000A120A81 Product of Thailand Label on the PCB says: 100468979 J C9112YFS That was no help, but behaviour was a bit different. With the "new" electronics the drive did emit different sounds and there was clunking too. But it did not report its presence to the motherboard - was not visible. It was visible via the CablesToGo USB-to-SATA adapter, but it reported a size of 0. I just swapped the electronics back - no change, of course. I judiciously ran CMOS/BIOS setup, SeaTools and other physical disk access software to see if it is at all visible. Neither BIOS nor SeaTools reported anything with either old or new electronics on it ever. I only saw it via the USB adapter, as noted above. Please help!
  7. Hi, I have a problem similar to the ones in these posts; http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/161029-seagate-barracuda-lp-green-is-not-recognized-in-bios-suddenly/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/150475-st2000dl003-seagate-barracuda-lp-green-2000gb-suddenly-ceases/ http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/128807-the-solution-for-seagate-720011-hdds/page-167#entry997493 http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/142565-how-to-solve-error-1009-detsec-00006008-fix/ Here are some pics of the pcb; http://imageshack.com/a/img850/7997/jjha.jpghttp://imageshack.com/a/img829/4638/3c94.jpghttp://imageshack.com/a/img850/7053/0jrb.jpg What I have tried so far are; 1- Connected to the serial interface of the hdd. Bi-directional data transfer verified. 2- Issued the ctrl+z command but didn't seem to have any effect. Then tried issuing the command repeatedly during boot. 8. Hi, i have restored an ST3500320AS from BSY status (or at least I think), now is recognized by bios but not Windows. Explorer still search for the partition, then nothing. I can see the content of the HDD only with Linux Xubuntu through the software TestDisk, but not always on the first attempt. It also happen that when i try to make a backup (with TestDisk) to another drive, sometimes give me a read error (can't read the partition) and i must retry the copy. What can i do for fix this problem? I haven't updated the firmware. I could fix it on this way? I am available to do any test! Thanks and sorry for the poor english
