I did it! I bought a Lenovo G500 laptop with Windows 8 (I still have my old Pentium 3 desktop though). Well, the start screen isn't so horrible but I too prefer the desktop - with a bit of a start menu with access to the various programs. I retrieved the serial number with Read and Write Everything as it was proposed in one topic here. Yet I wonder if there is a way to see the normal BIOS messages when the computer starts instead of the Lenovo logo. I looked into the BIOS but didn't find anything relevant - or it has to do with the "secure boot"?

I run, in addition to other devices such as network printers and MACs, two identical Windows 8 laptops on my home network. They connect to the router either via Ethernet or via Wi-Fi, depending on the preference of the user. That makes for four profiles, one of which (a Wi-Fi connection) for some reason ended up being designated as a "public network" and as a result appears to have no access to the router - I am guessing here; the network and sharing centre only tells me "no internet access". Changing the Sharing options does not work, because the system ignores the commands. For example, if I get out of that particular Wi-Fi connection, then reconnect in the foldout on the right and chose file and printer sharing "on", nothing will happen other than the system telling me that the connection is "Limited". I am assuming "public network" is an override that defaults to "no sharing". It must be changed to "private" first. But, where's the switch, better: can one change the network location without secpol.msc, i.e. without upgrading to Windows 8 Pro?

Hello! There are many similar topics regarding Windows 8 deployment... I tried to google and check out as many as I could. Wasn able to solve my issue though. I'm writing here, hoping that someone might be able to help me out. I am trying to deploy Windows 8 put problems with starting it. I have new Samsung laptop, where I have installed Windows 8 Pro. Iinstalled programs, created user-accounts etc. Then I bootel laptop from USB WinPE media and captured C:\ drive as a *.WIM file. So far everyting OK. I got second laptop (same model). Booted it also from Winpe USB media and used Diskpart to clean-create partition and format it as NTFS. I created just this one partition. On that partition I applyed the wery-same image that I previously created. Image was applyed and then started problems. --> bcdboot c:\windows is not working. --> Failure when attemting to copy boot files. --> I also tried bcdboot c:\windows /s c: --> Boot files successfully created. But after this OS isnt booting, still. Anyway, this is where I got stuck. Please help me out.

Hi, I'm using StartIsBack 2.1.1 in Windows 8 Pro x64 and I have made a custom start button that looks exactly to the Windows 8.1 one. The problem is the space left over between the start button and pinned apps, which is 8 pixels more than in Windows 8.1. Here is the comparison: And this is the custom button: Notice that 4 of those 8 pixels left over are from the button template right side. However, I can't delete those 4 pixels because the PNG/BMP file should be 54x162 pixels and if I resize it the program will complain that it is not a valid image. Is there a way to reduce this space?

Hi, My Windows 7 takes 13 seconds of a cold boot (Shutdown to Desktop, No hibernation enabled) I am once again giving Windows 8 another shot after some time...And unfortunately..No enhancement, Boot time is the same as it was when i last uninstalled it... My Windows 8 Restart (Forget about the hybrid/fast boot) from windows logo to desktop in 27 seconds! that is 14 more seconds than Windows 7! I am really bothered with that issue, I really don't know what is causing that delay from the time Windows logo start to desktop... This is a fresh UEFI / GPT install of x64 Windows Pro on a SSD drive using Intel RAID / AHCI driver, Latest BIOS, latest sound drivers... My mobo is an Asus Rampage IV Formula Bios 4004, GTX 690, 8 GB RAM. Here is the summary_boot.xml file..BTW my .ETL file is 148MB...not sure if that's normal or not... I hope somebody help me find out what is causing all this delay... Thanks in advance! summary_boot.xml
