Hello, I'm looking for a new backup solution. I've been using the "ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery" program supplied with my IBM ThinkPad (my main computer at the moment. It is supposed to basically create disk images, but it is very flaky, poorly supported, and has completely stopped working as of late, i.e., it will not be able to complete a new backup even after leaving it overnight. I've looked at a few other disk imaging programs, but I wonder about peoples' experience with "NTBackup" (shipped standard with Windows NT until Vista). Does this really create a disk image? Does it matter? The "Automated System Recovery Wizard" sounds pretty swell. Is it all it's cracked up to be? Does anyone have actual experience with this? Alternatively, I was thinking of something like DriveImage XML. Let me know what you think! Thanks, Thomas

On my external disk i have a 'WindowsImageBackup' and 'FileHistory' folder and as a user i am not allowed to look in these folders. I even can not see what permissions are given. Is it still possible, for a ransomware virus, to encrypt the backup files? or should i 'unmount' the disk and 'mount' again to make the next backup? And what system accounts are allowed to use these folders? If i force my way in then something [account] is added and i do not get a warning message. -
I've run into a question that I can't really find any good answers on. It kind of runs across different topics 1. I'm looking for things on how to make a USB drive bootable for things like DOS/98/Me/XP, but I'm finding a lot more about rigging up install disks for Windows 7, 8.1, and nothing much more than automated "format" programs. One thing I need to pick up...but however... 2. I already have some custom boot discs in storage I made from when I transitioned things from floppy to CD that I'd like to pull out and preserve... then 3. There's this whole disk image format that I see in some of the VMs... So, how do I proceed on this in order to back up my boot CDs and then be able to use them in such a way that I can install things onto a VM or straight boot from them off of USB drive? Also, is there anything else that I haven't thought of?

What is the deal with the Windows 10 Start Menu? All online guides explain you can export and import it by backing up some files, but these files do not exist anymore in the final version of Windows 10. I figured out a way to actually export the whole Start Menu layout by using this Powershell command: Open Powershell with admin rights (or click WIN+X, select "Command Prompt (Admin)", type powershell and hit enter): Export-StartLayout -Path C:\StartLayout.XMLThis works, the XML file actually contains the layout. But I do not know how to import it to an existing Win10 machine. This is the documentation from Microsoft: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/mt171092%28v=vs.85%29.aspx But this only works by importing the XML file into a Windows Image. Since most people simply install Windows via the free upgrade, I need a way to import it on an exisiting Win 10 installation. Any ideas?
