  1. I like AVS Disc Creator and for burning ISO images on Windows 2000 I like BurnCDCC

I hope this is not off topic, but I am trying to find a CD/DVD burning package that does not come loaded with a lot of excess garbage. Things like Cover Creator or an MP3 ripper, I only want something that will write, read and format CD-R's CDRW's, DVD +-R, DVDRW to continue testing builds. Could someone offer any suggestions (searched Google) but would like input from the people here. After reading and posting I feel most will offer true info. If this is inappropriate for the forum, i apologize and request the moderator remove it. I currently use Nero.
  2. Dirtwarrior is saying no. That he e-mailed gurglemeyer and he had a relapse of some kind. The future of USP 5 looks bleak.

Microsoft does release an ISO of their own for security updates.

A that is only contains the hotfixes (not the windows slipstreamed source)

B that is only avail for users with a SA licence

C it will in most cases not contain Case-Specific Fixes

what he means is if we get a new SP5 release and the answer is ...........

    (i hope so :P)

  3. In a word, No. As Windows 2000 and Windows 9.x have totally different underlying kernel architectures. And its much more difficult than using a hex editor.

I remember reading its possible to modify Windows 2000 update patches to fix Windows 98 (for some patches).

My main thought was we know Microsoft will not release updates for Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 98 anymore.

But they will release the updates for IE6 SP1 on Windows 2000.

And we all know IE is the biggest weakness in Windows 98.

    So can we make our own patches for IE on Windows 98 using Windows 2000 updates? :}

  4. You have to use Desktop Architect 2.11. Google it but i believe its still on ThemeDoctor.com. Its set under the tools --->options---->Advanced

is it possible to introduce clear backdrops for icon shadows on desktop like in XP?

Its a shame it died. I guess we will have to wait for Windows 2000 revolutions, from the makes of 98 Revolutions

I guess it just died prematurely :(
  5. I like Kubuntu as well, but because of the lack of hardware support I dont reccomend any flavor of Ubuntu. I do like SUSE 10, not 10.1 but 10, and I like Slackware. if you are a Linux newbie I often recommend Xandros or Mandrake.

I would give Kubuntu a go... after all the years of tesing I've found that KDE is less of a resource hog than Gnome... Also I find that Kubuntu is extremely nice to use. So give Kubuntu Dapper a try.. or Breezy
  6. There are several options you can go. First, CoreForce is becoming a favorite of mine. The second that i employ the most and will probably have as a secondary is the BSD firewall for Windows. I have used Ghostwall and Jetico on Server 2003 but dont recommend them for that type of use because it exceeds their design.

For AV you can use ClamAV , you can use Task Scheduler and or Visual Cron to assign scan times. I personally use Avast Server Edition, its pay but to me its the best. I have heard good things about AntiVir but I havent used it

a server that has routing enabled and nat configured with a dial-up modem.so server+routing.

and also any ips/ids software if the firewall doesnt have one.

  7. Womdpws Live messnger will b a Windows XP and beyond elease. they are not planning to release a Windows 2k version and they used some method in the betas to keep them from installing on Windows 2k.

This will be the site to watch in case someone does get it working.

I personally use GAIM and aMSN on Windows 2k

Anyone succeeded to make msn 8 work on windows 2000?

Maybe it's just some xp dll lacking

    Thanks everybody in advance.

  8. use the recover console to reset the password, or use password cracker to figure out and change the password.

The following Link has information on how to change a password

    http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

Ok my mate has a Windows 2000 Professional running laptop, but she has some how blocked the Admin account and cannot log on, any ideas how to get past the Admin account or reset the password?
  9. You could always uninstall XPize and load Server 2003 and einstall XPize. Or use nlite to slipstream your SP1 into your install. BTW, most of the time online in some forums when people say they have a VLK version, it ussually means its pirated.

No offence taken :) Why shouldn't a VLK be a legal copy?

I've searched the internet and found that the problem comes from XPize. It seems XPize changes the SHELL32.DLL size above 10MB and that's what's causing the problem. Reducing the size of the SHELL32.DLL under 10MB, by erasing some icons (with Resorce Tuner) solved it, but now some icons disappear and others appear instead of the right ones.

I've asked XPize if he will be releasing some fix any time soon, but got no answer. I'll try and email him, later today.

If someone could resolve this problem without editing SHELL32.DLL, please share that info; or if someone could post the original version of SHELL32.DLL to substitute i would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for any help.

  10. Did you have a backup of your policy on your main server? You might have to start back from scratch. next time make a GP template and keep a backup of your policy.

hello, i have a small domain (domain.local). Recently it locked out my user account that was in its own folder in active directory to enforce my own defined gp settings. the policy defines that the documents folders and desktop folders be re-directed to my server.

What i did: I deleted the user peter that was not having any problems until i was locked out from my computer and from any settings in AD. I deleted the user (that was all i could do). I recreated the same user name and security settings. the login name is the same as the old one as is the password.

The problem: I tried to log into my workstation with the user name peter. It logs in fine, but does not update any of the group policy settings that are in place (IE: folder redirection).

Attempted fix: i went to command prompt ran gpupdate /force - nothing happened. I removed the computer from the domain and then restart it, and re-added it. now i don't know what to do....

Any help would be awesome. Thank you in advance

  11. Sounds like somehow your install got FUBAR'ed. maybe time to reinstall. One question, not trying to offend, is thios a legal copy of Server 2003 or a VLK

    Well, can't install SP1 either:

"update.exe - Illegal System DLL Relocation

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occured because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL."

So... can't install SP1, can't even run calc.exe... Same problem with SHELL32.DLL, can someone help me please?

  12. he will have to buy x64 hardware and I have heard the price of the software will still be pretty expensive.

you may also want to check out Exchange 2007, it will be coming out in beta 2 in july, you could test it out and see what it is like, setup a little test domain or sandbox, it is much much much better then 2003 (think x64 hardware) :-D
  13. Anser to question 1. No. For a 64 bit it must be a clean install as the undelying architecture of the OS changes a great deal with the transition from 32 bit to 64 bit.

Answer to question 2. I have no idea but I doubt it

Answer to question 3. No. Norton does not work. i use Avast and thats a great AV system and its Vista compatible

Answer to Question 4. I dont know of one

Answer to Question 5. I personally like netscape 8.1 but I suppose Firefox, Maxthon and others will work as well.

I am about to take the plunge and install Vista beta 2 64 bit from the DVD kit provided by Microsoft. I have a secondary drive on which it will be installed.

Now I am rather ancient (age 72) and need some of your wonderful expert knowledge - I suspect quite trivial, so sorry in advance.

    Here goes.

    1. Can I install over an existing 32 bit XPpro/SP2 installation or is it necessary to go throuch a re-format/install process?

    2. I have an Asus A8N-SLI motherboard with 64 bit AMD 4200 CPU and an Audigy 2ZS Audio card. Does the Creative software work in Vista?

    3. Currently use Norton System Works 2006 for a/v control.

Does ths work or is there another a/v program that is known to work.

    4. Is there a site which can tell me what programs will work in this environment and those which will not?

    5. I know there are some broswers which don't like IE7.0 which is bundled with Vista. I need some feebcack, please

  14. I personally like FreeBSD or Solaris 10. But try Fedora Core. its a nice distro.

    try freeBSD or openBSD ;)

i will put a link here soon of a video i got made for me by craz1 to help me to install openBSD ver 3.6 [ think]

    its a good helper :)

    download

    http://files.filefront.com/installing_openbsdavi/;5101232;;/fileinfo.html

    about 12 mb

if not the BSD try centOS or FC 4 or FC 5

  15. If you use a desktop search tool be sure to turn off the Indexing Service as thats just an extra service that really isnt needed.

Yes I doubt that services have a lot to do with speed, but some people seem to be obsessive. I've been trying to tell Jdurall (aka dirtwarrior) for ages that committ isnt everything. Oh well....

I learned this now functionality is more important. BTW it was your 2k classic enhanced I was able to get this comitt in, When I put it on mine The lowest I got was 31 mb in comitt.

  16. These are the only services that you should be able to shutdown without significant problems. Go over there and turn the rest on.

    Computer Browser

    Error Reporting Service

    Help and Support

    Indexing Service

    Messenger (pop-up spam vulnerability)

    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing

    Performance Logs and Alerts

Protected storage (stores passwords and enables ato-complete)

Remote Registry (remote access to your registry)

Routing and Remote Access (enables dial-in routing to your computer)

    Secondary Logon

    Task Scheduler

  17. I have found that the command line cdburn and dvdburn from Windows Server 2003 Resource kit do work in Windows 2000. So does the CreateCD command line tool. I wonder how much trouble it would be to write a shell extension and GUI for CreateCD to be able to use this tool from Explorer in Windows 2000
