  1. Windows NT was great back then and still works with some legacy hardware. A client I work with got burned because a piece of hardware was certified for NT but she wanted to use it on Server 2003 and it didnt work out. (Ended up getting it working in virtualized NT)

  2. Depends on your usage. I personally like Windows Server 2003 in terms of development and testing as its more stable and can take the punding of constant changes. The dislikes I have of using it is the minute you tell someone, "Oh, I run Windows Server 2003 on my desktop" they automatically proclaim you to be a pirate. If you are not a developer and have no reason to use the OS then stick with Windows XP. If you still decide you want to use it, get Windows X Windows Server 2003 conversion pack.

  3. Try downloading the patcher from Neowin.net, that may help fix the problem if not then restore it using your original Windows Server 2003 disk.

I patched my uxtheme.dll with the patcher on msfn. Now every time i press the appearance button in the display properties. It just closes. I have tried to unpatch uxtheme.dll but the problem still persists.

How do i solve the problem?

  4. I thought hye was talking about upgrading XP Home to XP Pro[

    hey !

I got a quick question ... I have Win 2k and Win XP pro multibooted on one machine ..... have decided to upgrade my Win 2k to the pro version ....

can anyone suggest a way to upgrade my win 2k to win 2k pro without losing my stuff on Win XP

What do you mean upgrade Win 2000 to Pro? Win 2000 is already the Professional version.

The only snag in any Win2k/XP multiboot system is the boot files, esp. ntldr and ntdetect.com. The older versions in Win2k won't boot xp. So make a copy of them first and restore them after.

Boot.ini shouldn't be any concern. In any case you can always fix it manually or with the RC.

  5. So if I call novell and tell them I just want the CD's, not the manual or support. Just the box and disks? Will they send it? In short, no, thus you are indeed paying for the OS.

    the thing is this

you r not buying the OS

you buying the support in phone / email

the OS on cd / dvds and what else they give you

but there are big linux forums out there where people can help you fix any software problems and do updates for zzx thing that maybe tab out ...

VS ms where you gotta wait for them to do the fix and release it

should the users revolt .. no

90 $ for core stuff and 90 % of the software is free

to get a XP pro n office is like over 850 $ here

so go and work out what you want to do

ooh the big thing is this

if you want to write letters check ur email and use the net

    linux is the way

its free and ad/spyware free n virus free as well

  6. WGA Notifications is the ONLY tool from MS for WGA that contains the Phone Home technique which does not work under Windows 2000 AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!! WGA Notifications was pushed out through Critical Updates. The ActiveX control only exists for Validation at the MS Downloads website. All copies of Windows 2000 pass validations as Win 2000 did not contain an activation scheme and has no way for Microsoft to keep track of Windows 2000 keys used.

WGA consists of two elements, a validation check, and a daily phone-home bit.

The first element is legitimate, and is not deactivated by this program. This check is still preformed each time you access a website wishing to download WGA software.

The second element is spyware, and currently the matter before two court-cases in the USA.

The following program removes _only_ the second element, is found at http://www.firewallleaktester.com .

It does work under Windows 2000, and still allows the validation to work under Windows 2000.

  7. Sounds like a media problem during the initialization process. I had something similar happen to me when I used an nlited to death install image. Clean your media if its the original media, if its an image disk or nLite material burn another copy if you are able.

So you can't even install Windows 2003, this STOP error crops up during setup?

    * yes i can install fine, but it stops when it goes to restart.

Are you formatting the partition through setup, or preparing it beforehand?

    * Through set up when it aske . where do i want to install this OS.

Do you have another Windows 2003 CD that you could test, to rule out a media problem?

Its not a media prob, because is a MSDN subscriber cd.

Im thinking of just putting XP Pro back on it. and just do my Photoshop and do my web stuff on it.

  8. Windows 2000 is not required to have WGA, its not checked. The active X control is required for downloads from Microsoft but the ActiveX control only reports the OS to MS. If you were on XP you would get WGA notifications and WGA Notifications is the spyware.

I've got a legit copy of w2k. Recently, i went to update at microsoft and installed WGA as requested . Now I find WGA is spyware, and would like to remove it...

    Any clues

  9. Anyway to do it in nLite?

copy R2 disc to root of CD1

obiviously it is >719MB so u have to do it with some DVD (unless it is not nlited)

    then install with R2 key

    after install on first logon

it will automatically start installing R2

u only have 2 press OK

i dunno know how 2 elliminate tha OK and make it automatically

  10. When you download SyncToy or the Virtual CD-ROM powertoy you have to validate but they install otherwise. Just remember under Windows 2000 and Server 2003 they are unsupported.

Windows 2000 should pass automatically as does Server 2003. Im expecting that to change for Server 2003 as more people are adopting it for their desktop.

Software like Private Folder and PhotoStory will not install on 2k or 2k3 either.

  11. Ok /G, sorry about the insinuation. just no one has seen hide nor hair of you for awhile and Dirtwarrior said something about you being ill so no one knew. Good to have you back though.
