  1. I've been using ubuntu 8.04 for over a month now. I really like it. I've tried ubuntu in the past but didn't think much of it. Not enough to change anyway. Which brings me to this. I have for the first time ever been using Linux exclusively for over a month now. I really like using Linux. Especially ubuntu 8.04

  2. Here is a great article regarding Cloning Vista, using some undocumented Microsoft fix:

    http://www.multibooters.co.uk/cloning.html

    Regarding the topic Ghosting Vista, and using the above article, per close attention to a referanced article "to the man" which links to this:http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=616666&SiteID=1

    About the third or fourth post you will find the solution. It is also explained very well in the above article from multibooters.co.uk

    EDIT: I did a test and opened a CMD prompt and typed the following:

    BCDEDIT /set {bootmgr} device boot

    BCDEDIT /set {default} device boot

    BCDEDIT /set {default} osdevice boot

    Then I Cloned my system using Ghost. When finished I inserted a different hard drive and using Ghost restored the cloned partition. Viola! It worked. So this method would work on any viable cloning program, Acronis for another.

  3. I see over at Distrowatch that Sabayon is quite popular. I have used several distros with success. Slackware being one of my favorites, but for some reason Sabayon is causing me grief. I think its because my video is built in type. PCLinuxOS works flawless, so does opensuse and ubuntu, but not Sabayon. I hear great things about this release. I do get it installed but can't make it use 1024x768 to save my life. It always wants 800x640.

  4. ok i installed the fedoracore 7 with grub bootloader but after complete setup and restart it loads to windows without any bootloader shows up.so i tried loading the dvd and try to install the grub bootloader again and i get the message that NO KERNEL PACKAGES found or installed.something like that and then it restarts.yet i guess the os is installed and the only problem is the bootloader.anyway i can fix it?

    Super Grub to the rescue. Go here and read a little about Super Grub and what it can do, then near the bottom is several links to download the program.

  5. I'm sure this has come up before and I have search both here and abroad. All to no avail.

    I'm trying to accomplished what the below picture shows through nLite. But every time I

    try it I still get the new XP Start menu, and I can't get the "Adjust for best performance"

    to work.

    Anyone have done this? Thanks.

  6. that can create an exe installer compressed with 7zip

    True but not what I stated. EasySFX.exe need the EXE to be ouside the archive, like so:

    +INSTALLER.7z.

    +----setup.exe

    +----setup.dat

    +----data.cab

    Martin H's method has the EXE, that's going to be exectued, inside the archive using "config.txt"

  7. 1. Download 7ZSD.sfx from the first link listed on this russian page :
    http://7zsfx.solta.ru/downloads_RU.html
    2. Copy/paste the following into notepad and save it using 'UTF8' as 'config.txt' :
    ;!@Install@!UTF-8!
    InstallPath="%Programfiles%\\Portable Firefox"
    GUIMode="2"
    ;!@InstallEnd@!
    (Change the path as you like, and remember to use double backslashes)
    3. Make a 7z archive of the contents inside your 'Portable Firefox' folder.
    4. Place the 7z archive, 7ZSD.sfx and config.txt into the same folder and copy/paste the following into a command prompt :copy /b 7ZSD.sfx + config.txt + archive.7z Setup.exe
    (Change 'Setup.exe' to whatever you want)
    Use the above directions + additionally add the following to 'config.txt':
    RunProgram="hidcon:setup.cmd"
    Change 'setup.cmd' to whatever. If you don't run a batch file, then remove the 'hidcon:' part(it's used to hide the console window). You can run 'msi' files directly without using 'msistub.exe' or 'msiexec.exe' with this modified 7z SFX installer module(7ZSD.sfx). Btw, if you don't want a fixed extraction path and just want to use the temp folder, and also have the folder with the extracted files deleted afterwards, then remove the following from 'config.txt' :
    InstallPath="x"

    @Martin H, Thank you, just what I was looking for. I noticed that your Russian link *.sfx is much smaller than the one given by the guide on 7zip installers. I though my immediate install would have been different. I noticed several people modifing the *.sfx using Reshack. I have looked inside. Someone modified the % expanding to be just % and then below their was a word saying Loading in the gray area. Are theri any tuts on the dialouge modifing?

    Thanks again for your help. Interestingly you helped two people with one "stone" :)

    EDIT: I first googled and for some reason the above "babelfish" site never came up. Great find.

    I also was wondering about the "config.txt" parameters...now if I can just figure out how to use

    Reshack on the SFX file I'll be set.

  8. How do you just create a 7-zip sfx that extracts to a specified directory/place automatically without prompts?

    Example.

    Portable FireFox, doesn't need to be installed, just needs to be somewhere... I setup a stripped out version of PFF and 7-zip'd it up again (sfx) but when you execute pff.exe it asks where to extract to.

    How do I get it to just extract to "c:\" ?

    Thanks

    I want to know something very similar. There are examples galore regarding Swithless installs, but what I want to do is use SFX to extract to a dir of choice and then execute a file in that directory, nothing else. I don't want to install anything except the compressed archive. Uncompress the archive to a folder - execute a file in the folder - end of story. Somehow this is not possible, but I know it is. I have a program that does it, just can't find info on how to pass the paramerter to execute the one file. This program uncompresses to a 7z.temp folder and then executes the file.

    There's pleny of advice about passing arguments at the command level but nothing using the windows Parameters: of 7zip.

  9. Great job!

    I started reading yesterday and today I got to partitioning and didn't realize you had already updated it to English.

    Very easy to follow. A great help regarding imageX. I never found a more simple approach. Makes a seemingly complex issue childs play.

    Why this hasn't been done earlier, amazes me.

    Most tutorials are either very complex (more so than needs to be), or of the kindergarten variety

    Kudos to you for the great effort !!!

  10. vistacopy.png

    The above dialouge has caused me more trouble than ANY Vista feature so far. It's totally unrelated to vLite. I was told its related to NAT v6 somehow. It also pops up when trying to delete even the samllest file, or moving the smallest file. When it appears, and I'm still not sure what triggers it, game over. I have to re-install Vista, because I can't live with it!

    I'm surprised that MS hasn't had complaints regarding this issue. There is little to go on at this time.

  11. I have to say this first, I love VLite but I am having 2 problems.

    First, it takes 30 secs-1 min to delete files to Recycle Bin and then 2 mins to delete off the Recycle Bin.

    Secondly, When I try to rename an existing file, or when creating a new file and then naming it, it takes about 30 seconds for that to happen.

    Does anyone know the solution to this problems ?

    This error has NOTHING to do with vlite. I had it happen to me twice with regular install. It has something to do with internet settings. I'll try and get back here after I run down the lead that explained in detail. Something to do with NAT or IPv6. I was able to re-create it using WINASO Optimizer and its speedup system.

  12. Hi,

    Thank you for making this grate project!

    Can we create UDF-base file system iso images by using VLite, like the original Vista iso image? or, Is there a convenience tool to do that?

    I'm knowing that the CDImage.exe program can do that but I don't know the needed command line options.

    With best regards,

    Armond.

    cdimage -lVISTA -bc:.\image1.bin -h -n -m -o .\vlite c:\vlite.iso

  13. This has NOTHING to do with vLite. I have a similar issue with a new install straight out of the box. One shows error reporting 93.0 gig, the other shows another error reporting at 3 gig. Somethng else is happening here but not vLite related. I'll have to check another system I have that has more ram and see what it reports. BTW, ccleaner, regcleaner ,etc don't touch this stuff. Only running disk tools cleanup does it show up. Checking the log files and nothing out of the ordinary shows up.
