  1. Sorry to say that I've heard from numerous people with 3+ TB's and they have grave reservations about Acronis/Seagate/WD's Extended Capacity Manager to get full MBR 3 TB HDD's and they say that the "4096", "NTFS" and "Format" won't work. Well, I HATE to admit defeat, but since I CANNOT find the Ghost v11.5.1.2298 from GSS 2.5.1 that DOES see GPT HDD's, I've concluded that my only recourse is to relegate my 3TB to GPT and to BACKUP status to my 2TB Toshiba and dusted-off 1TB Hitachi MBR HDD's that I'll be using as my main drives. After numerous E-Mails to a bunch of Cloning Software companies, I've settled on MiniTool Partition Wizard v8.1.1 (to top it off, it's FREE!!!) to pre-partition my 3 TB-er and to do the "Copy partitions from my 1 and 2 TB MBR's to partitions on my 3 TB GPT" and use my Ghost v11.5.1.2269's Make and Restore Bootable CD's to do my MBR C and D Drive imaging chores. It's been fun--NOT!
  2. Allow me to doubt that statement. So software that's been out since 2+ HDDs have been sold by the 2 biggest HDD companies is suspect to you? Not to mention how long Acronis has been on the scene. >Guys, >Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-Bit "3TB+ Unlocker tool offers a tweak-friendly feature, breaking the limitation of 32-bit operation system that could only detect the hard disk within 2048GB" ASRocks goof. I just found this and would like some input: Make SURE the 3TB is EMPTY as this will wipe ALL data on the drive To make a fully accessible 3TB with 4k sector: 1. Boot to desktop. 2. Open "My Computer" in Windows Explorer. 3. Click on the EMPTY 3TB HDD. 4. If the factory made some partitions on it, delete them all. 5. Once it is just one disk, right-click it and click "Format" 6. Select "4096", "NTFS" and "Format". 7. Click OK. Since the 3TB is EMPTY, it should be real quick. 8. It's now ready to be partitioned to your liking up to 2.7 or so TB's total and is set as MBR. So, has anyone used these programs or the "4096", "NTFS" and "Format" method? Big Al
  3. Semi-Good News: I found a way to make my 3TB FULLY accessible and set as MBR. It's Acronis True Image, aka Seagates DiskWizard aka WD's version of DiskWizard. It puts an "Extended Capacity Manager" in the boot sector so you get one 2.1TB and one 700+GB partition, BOTH MBR. See: Seagate DiscWizard CloneDisc for drives larger than 3TB_Part-2 The reason that I'm posting this is to get feedback from anyone who has used these programs to see if the 3TBers work as any other HDD would or are there any quirks that have come up since partitioning your 3TB? Please post to me. Thanks in advance for your help.
  4. OK guys, course is changing a little: I would make 5 partitions, 4 NTFS and one small FAT32. I use Norton's Ghost weekly and it has issues with GPT. I proceeded to contact various partitioning/cloning software companies to see if their products could be used in place of Ghost. The partial exchange below is between TeraByte Unlimited and me: TBU: "If your new drive uses 4K sector sizes you wouldn't need to have a GPT." Me: Please elaborate. BTW, This is what my present Toshiba 2TB looks like: http://i.technet.microsoft.com/dynimg/IC546236.jpg TBU: If you expose the 4K sector size and not the emulated normal 512 byte sector size, you can use an MBR and use the entire space (up to 16TiB). 0xFFFFFFFF*512=2,199,023,255,040 0xFFFFFFFF*4096=17,592,186,040,320 Me: With what software and what is the procedure to go about doing this? Can it be done via a Bootable CD or must it be done in Windows with just my SSD and empty 3TB connected? TBU: It would be a drive feature/option, typically using a jumper. The BIOS would also have to support the larger sizes too so it doesn't crash reading larger sectors, a modern BIOS should be able to handle it. My hunt for answers from Toshiba is a lost cause as their support is a TOTAL joke and does NOT offer E-Mail support. So, I'm here to find out if this "exposing the 4K sector size" can, indeed, be done to my PH3300U-1I72, and if so, EXACTLY how to go about doing it. Also, are there any shortcomings to having the Toshiba "exposing the 4K sector size" using 5 partitions, 4 NTFS and one small FAT32? Big Al
  5. Just my 2 cents worth: Get on another computer and go to: http://www.partitionwizard.com/partition-wizard-bootable-cd.html download and burn the free iso to a CD. Use BurnCDCC v2.02 http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?id=116 With ONLY the SSD attached, have your computer boot from CD 1st. When it loads, right-click the SSD and partition it to your liking. My Corsair CSSD-F120GBGT-BK is C 35GB, D 16 and E 62. Now right-click the C and set to "Active". Shut down. Restart and put your Win 7 DVD in the player. Install to your C. Reboot and take the DVD out of your player. Good luck. B BTW: Win 7 64-bit has built-in Trim. To see if TRIM is enabled, open up a command prompt and type “cmd” into the search bar. Right-click on the first result (“cmd”) and click “Run as administrator”. Next, type in the command “Fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify”. Hit Enter. If this returns the result “= 0″, you’re good to go! Otherwise, TRIM isn’t supported and needs to be enabled. Try entering the command “fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0″. If that doesn’t help, a firmware upgrade might be necessary to enable TRIM.

  7. Hi, I have no fix but an alternative for you. Batch files (or shortcuts to them) to put on your desktop. Computer Shutdown batch file: %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0 -f Computer ReStart batch file: %windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -t 0 -r -f
  8. Hi, I run Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit with a ASRock P67 PRO3 (B3) MoBo that has a UEFI BIOS. I have EaseUS Partition Master Pro v9.2.2 and EaseUS Partition Wizard Home v8.1.1 as well as Acronis Disk Director 11 Home Build 11.0.2121 My C, D and E partitions are on a 120 GB NTFS SSD with a MBR. I installed Windows 7 on a pre-partitioned SSD so no hidden "System Partition". I'm getting a Toshiba PH3300U-1I72 3TB HDD that will have to be GPT Partitioned to get the full 3TBs. It will be used as storage only on partitions "F" thru "M". F will be 2.629 TB's Set As Fat32 G will be 1 GB's Set As Fat32 H will be 5 GB's Set As Fat32 I will be 4 GB's Set As NTFS J will be 30 GB's Set As Fat32 K will be 20 GB's Set As Fat32 L will be 50 GB's Set As Fat32 M will be 50 GB's Set As Fat32 My question: Can my Toshiba 3TB be partitioned as above? Thanks in advance for any help you can be. Bugz
  9. January 10, 2012 Dear Forum, I'm jumping from Windows 98SE to Windows 7 and having a problem using Norton's Ghost with 7. I'm sure getting the answer to these four questions will lead me on a path to success: First, this is my new box's Hard Drive......... 1 TB Hitachi 7200 RPM Pre-partitioned by Bootable CD of "EaseUS Partition Master Pro v9.0", which is a 2012 version of good old DOS's "Partition Magic". http://www.partition-tool.com/professional.htm C: 75 Gigs NTFS Windows 7 D: 25 Gigs NTFS Program Files E: 15 Gigs NTFS Used for making 4 Gig+ DVD files F: 600 Gigs Fat32 G: 30 Gigs Fat32 Ghost Images H: to M: 3 to 30 Gigs in size, all Fat32. 1. What is the maximum size partition that DOS, from a Windows 98SE boot disk, can see? 2. Is there a newer version of DOS out there, perhaps from a Windows ME boot floppy, or Windows XP? 3. When I used Partition Master, after the Primary 75 Gig C: was made, I could have gone two different routes... A: Make the balance of the HDD an "Extended Partition" and then make D: to M: all "Logical Drives" within that "Extended Partition". B: Make the balance of the HDD, D: to M: ALL "Logical Drives". Which is the proper way to go? 4. With the C:, D: and E: being NTFS, when I boot the HDD with a floppy boot disk and get the A: prompt, if I type C: and hit enter, will I get a C: prompt that in actuality will be the F: drive? Thanks in advance for all of your help. Bug_zs
  10. Guys, I'm currently using a Seagate 500GB 16MB Cache 7200.9 PATA in my Windows98SE box. I'm running out of room and want to get a bigger SATA hard drive, using a SATA Hard Drive To IDE On MoBo Adapter. I'm going for the SATA as they are MUCH cheaper than PATA's now, and I can use it in my future Windows 7 "Ultimate Build". What is the max number of Gigs that 98SE can handle? Thanks in advance for your help. Bug_zs
  11. Dear CharlesF, 1st, thanks for the quick reply. I've been doing some surfing and found Firefox versions from 3 to 3.6.8 at http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php I also scored KernelEx v4.5 RC1 and also Beta 2 from Sourceforge. What, exactly do I have to do to install the KernelEx, AND which one? Do I uninstall my v2.0.0.14 before or after I install the KernelEx? Which Firefox do I then install after I've uninstalled my v2.0.0.14? Please be as detailed as possible. As far as Opera goes, I absolutely L-O-V-E my AI Roboform, and it does not support ANY Opera browsers. Bug_zs
  12. August 10, 2010 Dear Forum, I just had the displeasure of finding out that Hotmail has screwed me again and now won't let me use my Firefox v2.0.0.14 to write E-Mails, just read them. The last time I tried any version over v2.0.0.14, I had a BUNCH of problems, but now I'm forced to. BUT Mozilla says that their v3.6.8 won't work on 98SE. A buddy told me there WAS a way to do it, but I can't find it. Thank you in advance for any help you can be. Bug_zs

  14. Guys, even though this is a Windows 98 forum, I think what I found in Brian Livingston's newsletter http://windowssecrets.com/comp/081030 about the latest MS patch MS08-067 is important to see. * "Are Windows NT and Windows 98 machines susceptible to the security hole?" Windows NT, 95, 98, and Me are supported by Microsoft only for customers who PAY A FEE. As a result, Microsoft releases patches for these operating systems only to people who have Premier support contracts with the company. However, as was reported on the Patch Management blog by Eric Schultze of patch-management vendor Shavlik.com, Microsoft has provided a fix for this problem to customers who pay for NT patches. Sooooooooooo, it looks like we have to find someone on this board who has access to a "Premier support contract" and will upload these 98 patches to Rapidshare so us 98ers are keeping our asses covered. I hope this helps y'all out. Bug_zs P. S. By the way, Livingston's free newsletter is always full of goodies.
  15. Duff, just to be 100% clear: 1. You install the factory Win 98SE CD 2. Load the Unofficial Windows 98SE Service Pack 2.1a 3. Load the Maximus Decim Cumulative Update v3.05 For Windows 98SE 4. Tweak with updated drivers, load proggies, etc... 5. Clean 'er up 6. Ghost the C By the way, thanks for pointing me to "Newbie is Desperate". Those links were KILLER. That dude Big_Al is gonna save me a TON of time with those DOS floppies for Ghosting images. I REALLY liked that bit about automatically booting to the desktop after Ghost has run. He sure knows his way around that program. I found out that Ghost 2003 is the last Ghost to include a DOS version and is compatable with Windows NTFS too, so if you do a little digging on Google you most likely will be able to find it. Oh, I also need to ask you about something said in "Newbie is Desperate": Yea, a hosts file is good - probably the single most effective way to keep malware off your system. I use the MVPS hosts file." How do I "lock it" to keep it from being changed as I've read some bad guys can do? Duffy, how DO you lock it? Type to me. Bug_zs
  16. Den, thanks for the heads-up about the Component Checker. BTW: Just where can I find Maximus-Decim's MDACCU? Google came up empty. Bug_zs
  17. Guys/Gals, In another post I made: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=125121 I noted that Windows Update said to install..... http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS06-014.mspx Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 Service Pack 1 (KB911562) When I tried to do it I got three mini-windows that said that my version of MDAC could not be identified. I ran the MDAC Utility Component Checker v2.0 2005 and the ID window said that I had version "2.8 SP1 On Windows XP SP2" even though I'm running 98SE. What I'd like to do is start fresh and uninstall the MDAC and reinstall it but I can't find a way to do it. All Google searches come up with "Run MDAC v2.8 and use it to uninstall MDAC". But running MDAC v2.8 will only do an install, with NO "Do you wish to uninstall?" option. Any suggestions? Bug_zs
  18. Duffy, thanks for the feedback and links to Maximus Decim's work. I guess I'll just figure my 98SE is up to date with those packs installed and be done with it. Thanks again. Bug_zs
  19. Guys/Gals, I have run 98SE forever and just ran into something VERY strange. I stopped updating when Micro$haft turned their backs on us all and stopped issuing patches for 98SE. My last download was Micro$haft Security Bulletin MS06-026 on June 13, 2006. I have the old (and now NOT supported) BigFix Consumer Edition v1.7.6.0 and when I run it, it says I am missing: Windows 98SE Embedded Web Fonts Bug Fix MS06-002 (BTW I'm 99.999999% I have it installed) Windows 98SE JScript v5.6 Bug Fix MS06-023 Dated 3-9-07, NOT the 6-13-06 one. (BTW I'm 99.999999% I have the 6-13-06 one installed) When I go to the WindowsUpdate site and go the "Scan For Updates" route it says that I need these: Security Update for Windows 98 (KB918547) Download size: 145 KB Security Update for Windows 98 (KB917344) Download size: 328 KB Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 Service Pack 1 (KB911562) Download size: 797 KB Security Update for Windows 98 (KB908519) Download size: 210 KB Security Update, March 7, 2002 MS02-014 Download size: 834 KB HOWEVER, all of the above were installed as they became available except for the MS02-014 one. Hey, I'm human. Now for the REAL screwy part. When I go to the WindowsUpdate site and do the: "In the left pane, under See Also, select Windows Update Catalog." "Select Find Updates for Microsoft Operating Systems." "Select the operating system and language of your choice." "Click Search" routine, it says that I'm missing 76 (no typo--76) updates. WTF???? Any input is greatly appreciated. Bug_zs
  20. August 11, 2008 Guys/Gals, I tried Davis' suggestion and came up short. When I rebooted I checked the tvDebug.log and it was bigger and the "Read Only" was unchecked. This is what I came up with: In place of my ZoneAlarm Icon on my desktop, I substituted a Batch File shortcut and named it "ZoneAlarm". The batch file reads like so: DEL "C:\Windows\Internet Logs\tvDebug.log" wait 2 start "D:\Program Files\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" This deletes the tvDebug.log file, waits 2 seconds and then executes the ZoneAlarm exe. Problem solved! Bug_zs P. S. If you STILL wanna kill the tvDebug.log after being online for a while, just shutdown ZA then click on that desktop Icon to get ZA up and running.
  21. August 11, 2008 Guys/Gals, Does anyone have a direct download link (Rapidshare, FileFactory, etc..) of the FULL version of DirectX v9.24.1400? I'm having trouble with that dxwebsetup.exe nonsense. Bug_zs
  22. August 11, 2008 Guys/Gals, As Microsoft has never been known for consistancy, I'd like to get your take on the three following pages I found while surfing about DirectX: Bug_zs http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=en February 2007 File Name: directx_feb2007_redist.exe Version: dxsdk Date Published: 2/13/2007 System Requirements * Supported Operating Systems: A TON were listed, BUT Windows 98 Or Windows 98 SE were NOT listed Lower on the page: Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME Are Unsupported by DirectX Starting with the December 2006 SDK, DirectX does not support targeting of applications for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, or Windows ME. D3DX9_32.DLL does not install or load on these legacy operating systems. To support these legacy operating systems, use the October SDK or an earlier version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en June 2008 Quick Details File Name: dxwebsetup.exe Version: 9.24.1400 Date Published: 8/8/2008 System Requirements * Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 2000 Advanced Server; Windows 2000 Professional Edition; Windows 2000 Server; Windows 2000 Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; *********************Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition******************* Windows Home Server; Windows ME; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2003, Yada, Yada, Yada... I put 9.24.1400 in MS's search engine and got this: There are no documents that match your search for "9.24.1400" Please try a different search above or try one of the related links below.
