  1. 11.64 is the better option if you have KernelEx installed, and 12.02 works too but is much slower...

Thanks. I'm running the 11 version now and installed flash 10 over latest kernel ex.

Only problem is, whenever i use the IE6 flash applications make the browser crash(as flash 10 is only supposed to run on win 2000 and ie6 from win98se don't work together). However I could speed up my downloads a bit. But its no real boost.

    I used this application: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

Just wanted to share this information, as I know how it sometimes sucks being limited on internet speed just because of the registry settings and so stuff...

  2. I've done some testing with the browsers. However I found out that FireFox 3 is not the best choice.

I'm now using the Opera version 10.63 on my Windows 98SE Pc which is better than FF.

For example when I tried loading the website "List of TCP and UDP port numbers - Wikipedia" the loading of the table it took nearly eternities with ff3 or internet explorer 6.

Background info: The opera 10.63 (apparently for windows me, but it will work on 98se too, at least on using kernelEx) is from 2010.

    so pretty actual!

I found the version through "wikihow" -"how to use windows 98".

The direct link (if unknown) to the browser is:

    http://www.oldapps.com/opera.php?old_opera=85

Btw. I want to say thank you to the community for the great uptodate " Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE " section, through which I found Spybot Search&Destroy 2.2 as a Anti-Spyware software. At the moment I'm trying to optimize internet speed on my 98se Pc. Because I don't want to take the fact, that my machine only reaches 6mbps download potential through a 100BaseT cable! And our max speed on every other OS is 15Mbit/s with W-Lan! So I'm trying to find out if there is any spyware on it.

    Soon I'll find out more!

  3. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

I am NOT the creator of the Windows 98 Upgrade Pack, I'm just the Webmaster and hoster for www.w98upg.net.tf, the Producer was and still is winxpi!!!

So if you have any questions please ask winxpi!

I will just update the contents of the first page if updates are made on request of xpi!

So please take that in consideration.

    Fine!

  4. Or I could use [probably, did no test] the hexed versions of MM by X-max, which are part of his 98SE

The patch would be better because it adds missing APIs that require other programs to

    work besides MM

    like AutoUpdate etc....

Yes your right if the thing you're meaning is that KUP adds missing APIs that other progs also require.

  5. Regsvr32 command line switches:

    /S = quiet

    /I = regserver install

    /U = un-regserver [uninstall entries from registry]

To view all regsvr32.exe switches, just run from a DOS box:

    %windir%\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE

    Good example:

    copy browselc.dll %windir%
    copy browseui.dll %windir%

    CD %windir%\System

regsvr32 /u /s %windir%\System\browseui.dll ;unregisters the browseui.dll file in System using silent mode
regsvr32 /u /s %windir%\System\browselc.dll ;unregisters the browselc.dll file in System using silent mode

    regsvr32 /i /s %windir%\browseui.dll ;registers the browseui.dll file in %windir% using silent mode
    regsvr32 /i /s %windir%\browselc.dll ;registers the browselc.dll file in %windir% using mode

  6. It corrects a security issue in the Windows Explorer and such updates are not often released

for Windows 98 since there is only extended support for win98 and those issues where mostly not rated as critical from MS.

In other words it closes a security risk in the nearly always used Windows Explorer.

I am rather doubt about that Microsoft will still release an update because

they would have to change the shell32.dll from a 9x system which I think is unlikely because it isn't programmed in the same way as in NT line and therefore they have maybe already forgotten it.

  7. Before a few weeks I have been digging into MDGx's website and I found a pack which does this, but it installed alot things I didn't need. I separated the updates from it, and added some new. And it still used a batch file to install updates. So this is where the tiny program I wrote comes:

Did you mean Windows 98 Upgrade Pack ?

And like others said before some updates are obsolete.

Where did this updater come from?

See the top of the thread.

It just says it's on the MGDX site; Anyone know where it actually stems from [user-written?]

  10. ------

    3. Get from Windows Update Catalog the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (KB905915) - (Posted Date: December 08, 2005) for WinME (Yes, WinME!), from it you can then extract the most recent BROWSEUI.DLL Version 5.50.4948.700

    4. Copy the 2 files BROWSEUI.DLL and BROWSELC.DLL just got into the folder C:\WINDOWS

    5. Create a batch file, e.g., PATCH.BAT, that contains following lines:

    CD %windir%\System

    regsvr32 /u /s %windir%\System\browseui.dll

    regsvr32 /u /s %windir%\System\browselc.dll

    regsvr32 /i /s %windir%\browseui.dll

    regsvr32 /i /s %windir%\browselc.dll

    6. Run the PATCH.BAT above and reboot.

Cool what a random in my Windows 98 Upgrade Pack (see here) I'v also implemented the Bugfix against Explorer Freezing in IE6.0 (in the file bugfixen.exe)

and I've exactly used the same commands in my batchfile.

But I don't recommend you to take the browseui.dll(5.50.4948.700) from KB905915 for IE 5.5 SP2 Windows ME because

I once tested it and found out that you can also get the problem of a slowly reacting of Windows on deleting files.

  11. Currently I am searching for intergrating NTFS support in Windows Me, but I cannot find it on google. Interesting!

    Check out this

NTFS for Windows 98 is a NTFS file system driver for Windows 95 and Windows 98. Once installed, any NTFS drives present on your system will be fully accessible as native Windows 98 volumes. This version provides read-only capabilities.

NTFS for Windows 98 works on the following versions of Windows:

    Windows 95

    Windows 95 OSR2

    Windows 98

    Windows 98 SE

    Windows Me

  12. I got the 905915 Cumulative Internet Explorer December Update through this
How did you manage to obtain that bit of info? Will the MS Police raid this forum now?

I don't think that MS will care about of that, because the link I've posted is from theire Website and in Google Groups everyone could find the link.

  13. I have released the Windows Upgrade Pack for Windows 98/98SE

Downloads and further Informations can be found here

It also includes an Internet Explorer 6 Bug Fix (against hanging on deleting or moving of many files)
