    sfc /scannow

right... but are they SP1 (from disc) files, or SP3?
  2. OK, so Creative doesn't want to help me XPSP3, X-Fi Platinum -- I updated to the latest drivers and now I can't get my MIDI keyboard to work anymore. I've tried a USB to MIDI adpater as well... no go. I've tried MIDI keyboard to MIDI-in (using miniDIN adapter) using the media bay front panel... no go. I've tried M-Audio's "MIDI fix" program... no go (it removes duplicate entries; I've learned XP doesn't like more than 10 MIDI devices/duplicates). I've tried reinstalling the new drivers, no go. MIDI playback works just fine and I can play a few notes with Creative's virutal MIDI keyboard in the SFBM, so MIDI isn't muted. I've tried using Reaper to verify no input, no go either. Just wondering if anyone else has this problem. I assume not alot of ppl use MIDI and recording programs on here, but I thought hey, worth a try as I love this forum.

    sfc /scannow

I am having a sound issue and reinstalling the drivers didn't fix it So, I tried the sfc /scannow thing and I would like to know exactly *what* files it is trying to restore, like in the good ol' 98SE days, ie. Since I installed XPSP3, is it trying to restore the SP1 files from the disc or what? Isn't there a way to make it restore files from the SP3 backup files to fix the corrupted ones?
  4. I don't know how these got there in C:\Documents and Settings\ I have duplicate folders of: "Administrator" "All Users" and my personal account "User" At the end of the folder name, is the Computer's name, eg. "Administrator.Computer.Name", etc. Anyone know why this is?
  5. Good question... that's just how bossman set it up here at work. So I need to boot into a DOS environment and copy the .sif file to that dir? I remember setting XP up over a month ago using this floppy method... I don't know anything about this $OEM$ folder stuff the mods.bat appears to be something specific to Norton Ghost that we use here That's the bad thing about working Saturdays, no mgmnt! btw, what about WINNT.bat? It's not on there...
  6. Don't know what I'm doing wrong here, but XP is prompting for a license key... I'm leaving the answer disk in the floppy drive the whole time... What am I doing wrong? The disk was just made a day ago. There are 4 files on it: mods.bat, mach.reg, user.reg and winnt.sif The key is encrypted on the disk, btw. I know XP didn't support this feature until SP1, but I don't think what I'm installing is any older than that.
  7. Not sure where you read that at but I've never heard that before. Again, I would say the opposite is true. A drive formatted as a single partition with a good defrag program will always perform better than a drive split into multiple partitions. I guess I was wrong about SATA and the 137GB thing. So, what about the labels in parenthesis... ?
  8. ohhh newwww neww newww... Drive 1: 320GB SATAII - C: and D:. XP is on C:, user data / programs and swap file are on D: Drive 2: 500GB SATAII - E:, F: and G:. Contains media files. I did all of this because I've read if you keep the patitions under 137GB (well, mine's around that), then you get the increased speed/reliability. Correct me if I'm wrong. So I guess I'm just not fully understanding the information provided by Windows help about labels of partitions / types of volumes.
  9. Attached is my current disk configuration... C: is my XP system (obviously) exclusively D: is just user data / programs E:, F: and G: are just for media storage So... why this configuration? Is XP indicating that it's booting from E:?
  10. nmX... not many options, it's a Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 rev 1.0 board btw I usuall keep my BIOS settings lean (disable any unneeded devices, etc.) and IRQ's and PCI assignments, etc. are set to "Auto" I've had to reinstall XP about 3 times since I built this rig within the last month (first time ever installing XP!), and I've finally got it running like it needs to aka not locking up / no chronic registry errors. Upgrading from a 98SE system with an Athlon 700MHz and a TNT2MX video card to an E6750 Core2Duo with a GeForce 8500GT sure is a BIG difference! So, I guess if it's not broke... I'll try the reload defaults thing and poke around a bit
  11. The USB problem was fixed by reinstalling the Root Hubs, which all had yellow ! in front of them This is a documented problem/bug/feature that is listed in the Intel chipset driver readme.
  12. I think my install of Intel's chipset drivers went bonkers... Have a look: Resource Device Status IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK IRQ 16 Intel® G33/G31/P35 Express Chipset PCI Express Root Port - 29C1 OK IRQ 16 NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT OK IRQ 16 Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2937 OK IRQ 16 Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 2940 OK IRQ 16 Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 5 - 2948 OK IRQ 16 GIGABYTE GBB36X Controller OK IRQ 21 Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2938 OK IRQ 18 Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2939 OK IRQ 18 Intel® ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 293C OK IRQ 18 Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2936 OK IRQ 17 Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller OK IRQ 17 Intel® ICH9 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 294A OK IRQ 17 Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC OK IRQ 23 Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2934 OK IRQ 23 Intel® ICH9 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 293A OK IRQ 19 Intel® ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2935 OK IRQ 20 Creative SB X-Fi OK IRQ 0 System timer OK IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK IRQ 4 Intel® ICH9 Family SMBus Controller - 2930 OK That many devices on a single IRQ isn't good, right? Do I need to reinstall XP? Or can I just update the chipset drivers with the latest? I *did* have a problem with USB devices not working after reboot...
  13. Just built a monster rig and delayed getting a TV tuner card... Really want to know what you all think is the "best", in terms of features / quality Happauge? ATI? Avermedia? It appears the Happauges are the most widely used... I would like it to have HD and digital tuning capability for future compat. As far as PCI vs PCIx - doesn't really matter Is the Gemstar guide still being used? Or do these newer cards have something bigger and better, so to speak? I remember I had an old Gateway with a tuner card and it used that guide (updated over the net) yes, it's been a while! I would love to dualboot to Mtyhbox / MediaPortal / etc. if possible, as well gotta love it Edit: Found this - http://www.msfn.org/board/HD_TV_Turner_Cards_t103026.html Still would like to know about the Guide thing...
  14. Anyone had any problems getting drives of these types to work on 98SE? I have a PPA, Inc. "Metal Gear" (model 2223) 5.25" enclosure with a LiteOn DVD-RW drive that will not work for anything (concerning the drivers). I install the drives on the provided disc and reboot, Windows just searches for "the best driver" and finds... nothing. What crap is that?!!! I tried 2 other similar models' drivers and no luck. Just a yellow exclamation in device manager and "The loader NTKERN.VXD could not load drivers blah blah blah and Code 2. Wow, that's informative. After getting my USB flash drive to work, I would have thought it would be easy... wronnng!
