  1. What is it with these "Why use xxxx?" threads?

We've had too many of these already and the same points get repeated over and over, all these threads seem to do is benefit users who want to increase their postcounts.

This thread is a fantastic waste of time and energy with only very few relevant answers. I'm new to this 9x forum but ...amazed.

  2. 'Press Any Key...' boot message. Enable/Disable ... I'm decoding here,

means... surprise surprise.... that you enable or disable the 'Press Any Key" boot message.

'Use this'... means 'You may want to change something to the Microsoft default setting here', means change the default ('Enable') to 'Disable' if you want to disable the message.

the 2 indication seperatly are clear and logic... but together, may be i'm the only one, but i'm confused
    You have no excuse. :angel
  3. It seems that IE & OE are integral parts of the 98 operating system.. or, parts of IE & OE are integral parts of the 98 OS... What parts?.. Are those parts replaceable, without installing IE & OE?..

Anybody read this 10 times and tell me if it makes sense

And in fact, ... OE is part of IE. :D

  4. Nope. Maybe I'm not clear. By the way, the problem is solved, this is a question, not a cry for help.

See, if I add a partition, letters are shifted and my last optical drive disappears because the drive letters is limitted to my original line up: 3+2. This is not normal IMAO. I can solve it by extending the "lastdrive" to H or I, but this is not normal IMHO. There must be something wrong somewhere.

  5. Hi,

I just did a fresh install booting from a custom cd and copying the 98se files on the HDD. Now it's up and running, I spent hours trying to install a driver for my usb key before I realised that if i put a "lastdrive=h" command in the config.sys, the drive actually does show. My config.sys was empty at first. Why does it limit the amount of drives to the original config (3 partitions +2 optical drives) ? Where, in what file, is the "lastdrive=g" hidden ?

  6. and lets me use the cd key but it still does not

still does not what ?

-what cd are you using instead of the OEM ?

-is there no key on the computer (sticker) ?

-search the forum for "OEM", there is a lot about this sort of issue.

  7. As I said, these are just MY thoughts from the real world, not something that's been quoted over and over a 1000 times. I tried to think up some PRO arguments, but honestly, could not think of even one. OK, maybe there's one:

    1. Your computer will boot in 25 seconds instead of 40.

I thought we were talking about something that makes boot time longer to speed up application launching. :angel

  8. Ryan is a nice guy who made (amongst other things, I'm sure he has a life :D ) a post SP2 update pack. That pack is available for download on his site (google it), is ~40meg, and is also slipstreamable via nLite (2nd step). This is sooo easy that you'd be foolish not to use it. As I wrote before, one of the updates included is called "Microsoft Update" and might be the one you don't include at first. Members are asked to not mix the posts about Ryan's pack problems and nLite's issues if possible, each having their own forum, own road and updates. Still one is welcome using the oter. :)

  9. Are you sure!?

Because I've read many positive things, like this one

    or you can see here

There's not much positive things in your links, just "ideas". You'll find as much ideas if you google on "XP superfetch myth" or check this page.

Sorry Tux, I admit I can't test it because I don't have much RAM.

  10. It depends of so much things that an answer almost cannot be given. Typically, you'll go from ~1.6Gig to ~700Meg on your disk so you should be able to run a 2Gig HDD. As for the ISO, as long as it fits on a CD, who cares ? :D . Mine (XP) is about 300Meg without the goodies. Others will surely be more precise.

  11. it's probably safe to say that nLite doesn't know what every file in Windows does, is associated with, or might be associated with later on. If they did, they could make tons of money with Microsoft and we probably wouldn't even need such a program as nLite as they would have perfected Windows, and we know how that's not gonna be anytime soon.

Do you think anybody in the world knows what every file in Windows does ? Do you think Bill Gates does ? Do you think anybody at MS does ? Have you counted them ? Do you think Nuhi has a list of 10.000 files somewhere in his head ?

Do you think MS woul be happy to sell people tons of different versions of XP ? XP is bloated because MS wants to sell it to everybody on cheap PCs with everything in it. Now first you call it "MS bs" but now you say you can't live without it. To be honest, your posts are too long and they don't make sense at all. Like a formula 1 driver that would say his Ferrari is not perfect because you never know,... it might be raining soon and there's no roof to it !

nLite does work as it should. And it's free. "Run into a problem sooner or later ?" Have you ever used a standard XP ? Does it not ?

As for your advice, what's the point in reducing Windows if it's only to waste a partition, "not the one you'll be using" ? Just leave it. Good luck with Bolder Fortune and your spyware program. Or was it Bold Fortune and anti-spyware ?
