  1. Hii ..scourging through the interwebz i found this forum and i must say this place is ver interesting for a new sys admin like me . :D i hope to gain new knowledge from u guys and share the little i have .. :D

Hi and Welcome - Feel free to send me your network ip and admin login details :thumbup and i will then take a look and see what improvements we can make for you :sneaky:

  2. Now that MSFN hosting has gone - what are you guys using now? I was going to sign up to MSFN hosting as I liked the features like: cpanel, high bandwidth, high space, sub domains etc for a low price.

It will be hard to find another web host with the reputation that MSFN seems to have.

There are Thousands more hosts out there!

http://hostpapa.co.uk/ Seems to be my fav at the moment! Cheap and domain included :)

  3. the E5200 is very similar to the E4700 but 45nm. The E7200 beats them both easily.

I have to agree with puntoMX as usual here.

The 3 main differences between the E5200 and the E7200:

    -33MHz clock speed (basically nothing)

-slightly higher FSB (very little gained there too)

-2MB vs 3MB cache, which probably won't make much of a difference either (depending on what you do of course). If you look at E7200 vs E8200 comparisons (3MB vs 6MB cache -- doubling the size), you'll see it makes like 5% difference (average) in games, and far less than that in most apps. So a 50% difference in cache size won't even make that much difference. The E7200 is ~50% more expensive, and will give you a whole 5% more speed sometimes. Or to put it another way, the E5200 offers ~95% of the speed for 2/3 of the price. It's a good budget CPU that OC'es nicely (it might even OC better than the E7200)

The 45nm process itself doesn't really make any difference. The E5200 is based on the same Wolfdale core as the E7200 (45nm too).

But it's your hard earned cash... My nearly one year old cheapo $75 E2160 (once OC'ed) runs faster than the E8400 (at stock speed) my brother bought last week for over $200... I'm planning on buying a pair of E5200's after xmas myself.

Sorry but the 3mb cache and 1066mhz fsb helps a bit more than that.

Look at this chart and you will see the E7200 beating the E4700, which is pretty much the same as the E5200 but with a faster clock speed and 65nm, at 37/43 benchmarks!:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts/deskt...chmarks,31.html Then click on any benchmark then check the E7200 AND E4700 and click compare.

I read the E7200 can OC up to 3Ghz on stock voltages and cooling, and I wouldn't want or need to take it up any more than that anyway.

Anyway thanks, but I think I will go with an E7200. Here you are telling me to get a cheaper CPU, yet at the same time, people are here telling me a 9500GT would not be as good a choice as a 9600GT even though I only wanna play Halo type graphics games which would run settings maxed on my 19inch 1440x900 resolution monitor!

And age of empires 3 and ut 2004 would not run on the PC on the pc in my sig or if they did, at very low graphic settings.

ive run both these on a P3 866 with a GF4 MX 420 PCI but your right in that i didnt bother changing the graphic level much. hmm thought cache had more effect then that though i havent done research

Yeah, I don't exactly get a huge kick playing games in minimum settings and hate lag too much.

G'day guys, I'm building a new PC for the family to use and just want to verify that I have chosen good quality parts etc. This PC will mainly be used for internet, word, music, movies, DVD burning, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks, and of course basic gaming. When I say basic gaming, I don't mean pinball but at the same time I don't mean Crysis. Halo:combat evolved, age of mythology, unreal tournament 2004, age of empires 3, those sort of games. I am not going with AMD or ATI products either. Just Intel/Nvidia. And dont say I can get a 9800gt for super cheap prices because here in Australia they cost alot. It has to be stable and quiet. So I have put together some specs and prices for you all to comment on before I buy. These are AUSTRALIAN prices including postage costs. No you can't get an Intel c2d e7200 for the retail of something like $130 in america. They cost $179 without postage here but I found them cheaper.

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53Ghz $162

Motherboard: Asus P5KPL-CM OR Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L $88 (Which do you recommend?)

    RAM: Kingston 2x 1GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel Kit $70

    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB $100

GPU: Foxconn Nvidia GeForce 9500GT 512MB DDR3 OC version $127

Optical Drive: Any suggestions on a good cheap DVD-RW?

    Case/PSU: Foxconn TSAA 908 + 600W PSU $92

TOTAL including postage and GST: $639

So what do you guys reckon? I don't need a monitor, keyboard, mouse or operating system.

You forgot the PC case ;)

And you could leave this thread open for a year and EVERYONE will have a different view on what you should purchase for a new machine! What you said above looks fine! I cant see how that wont be good for a family machine :thumbup

The only thing i would add to that is 4 GB RAM, but thats because RAM has dropped so much in price now and makes that huge speed difference on Vista.

Or did I? Look at the bottom of the list. It says "Case/PSU: Foxconn TSAA 908 + 600W PSU $92".

Yeah thanks I reckon it will run alot smoother than our current family 'beast'. Celeron 2.4ghz, 512mb ddr 266 ram, 40gb ide hdd and an nvidia geforce 2 mx 400 to pump out the graphics...yeah.

I will look into ram but considering there was one person here that recommended 1gb ram, 2gig should suffice.

Think i must be going blind ;)

  4. I have to work on and install many laptops.

It's amazing to me how many are actually running as little desktops, always on AC power and almost NEVER on battery power.

But if you'll look in "Power Management" you'll see two separate settings,,, One for AC power and One for battery power.

Having the little 'puter throttled down while on AC power makes NO sense at all.

The only shut down setting I use is to shut down the hard drive after about 10 minutes of NO use. This reduces the amount of heat coming from the HD and lets the PC cool down between uses.

As for an OS for a laptop with only two gigs of ram and a not-too-fast CPU, XP would be the OS of choice.

If the little PC was made for XP, there probably would not be any hardware drivers for that PC that would be Vista compatible. Vista, if it would even install, would run dead slow on that PC.

It's absolutely criminal, that so many Laptops are coming out with Vista installed and only minimal ram and cpu's.

They would be better suited to run Windows ME.

Since heat is the greatest foe of Laptops, I always tell my customers to NEVER set their laptop on a rug, bed or even their lap, since that will block the air intake ports on the bottom of the PC and inhibit cooling.

    Good Luck with that lappy,

    :thumbup

I AGREE with your comment about them shipping Vista out on machines with minimal RAM, but what option do they have really? There not allowed to use XP now as a pre-install, and they dont want to lose profit so they WILL ship with minimial cost/hardware :(

  6. Manual who reads the manual. Wait when was the last time you SAW a manual. And I mean printed material that came with the system. Not the electronic documentation.

That is a very good point - i cant remember the last time i had seen one with a new machine! in fact honestly thinking about it - i dont think i have ever seen one for a laptop except a small step-by-step one!

  7. Notebook power management, Intel SpeedStep will lower the clock speed to save power.

Power settings in Control Panel ;) Set to Always On and disable Hybernation ;)

    wow thanks!!!

I can't believe I was using the half power of my notebook for all this time!!!

No problem :) They should explain that on laptops when you buy them! Mind you im sure they do in the manuals! Just i never read them haha! :thumbup

  8. Why can't I Get Internet?!?

I'm living in a dorm, and I'm trying to use my roommates internet (we're sharing the cost). Anyway, My VISTA computer shows that it is connected to the router (and I can see other computer's on the network sometimes). However, I can't get internet, but my roommate can get internet both wirelessly and not. Even when he's not connected to the internet at all, I still don't get internet. Yet when I connect to the router via a cable, I DO get internet. What is wrong?

Here is some information on the wireless network connection status:

    IPv4 Connectivity: Local

    IPv6 Connectivity: Limited

    Media State: Enabled

    SSID: TREV DSL

I'm pretty sure I have everything enabled on my computer that needs to be, because I can get internet on a different router.

If you could help me, that would be REALLY nice (currently, I'm stealing one bar of signal from an unknown neighbor and it's really inconvenient...). Again, this is a Vista computer (Yea, I know...) so try to use instructions for the Vista operating system, not XP.

p.s. I've made the network Private, so it doesn't really have to do with anything like that I think... but I don't really know. Also, I would have just called the company, but the warranty has expired... so, I'm stuck

To me it sounds like your trying to get the connection from the other PC, so it would need Internet Sharing enabled on that PC? Or are you connected to a switch?

  9. Thats for modifying your video cards bios. I'd use NiBiToR instead for that task. You can find it on;

    http://www.mvktech.net/

However I would just use rivatuner to oc the card.

As for oc'ing cpu and mem, you can try SetFSB and MemSet.

    http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/

    http://www.tweakers.fr/download/MemSet358beta.exe

I doubt you'll find a decent bios unless it's a somewhat standard board and has a manufacturer bios available instead of an OEM one.

Thanks Nexus i will give these a go when i get home :thumbup:thumbup

  10. Hi there,

I have a stupid Packard Bell machine running a Core Duo 2 - 2.6 Ghz and a NVidia 8600GS - now im unable to find any kind of flash BIOS for this to enable me to overclock my CPU.

Does anyone know of any software that will enable me to overclock the processor or the Nvidia card?

    Cheers

  11. haha the title says it all

This girl Ive been "getting to know" better tells me to be quiet yesterday night when her phone rang.

I was puzzled & asked why.. she tells me her "brother" was on the phone & she didnt want him to have any idea that I was there (shes 28 & lives alone)

so reluctantly I was quiet.. while she was talkin to him on the phone.. her friend sitting across the room from us leans over to me & says shes married!

    I was flabbergasted!

the 3 of us went out that night anyways & had a good time , but she says her husband (whom shes been married to for 5 yrs) is in the US army (we're both canadian)

shes got a 6 yr old son(not his kid) & she doesnt wear her wedding ring !

lol tough decision to make, because I liked this girl alot (until I found this out), we have alot in common, we've often had long talks about mistakes we've made in the past & wanting to do "the right thing" now, as we're both getting older & hopefully more mature! lol

funniest thing is.. hes got the same last name as I DO, just a coincidence (but she doesnt go by his last name)

haha im so torn!! which head should I use to make the right decision? lol

I wanna talk to her, but not sure how to bring this up.. I try not to get involved with married women, but she doesnt seem too "married" lol

Your life is confusing? Ive just split with my gf of 2 years, but i had 3 ppl on the go - the ex calls me ALL the time! 1 of them has now gone off the scene because i wasn't commited enough ;) 1 of them is now calling me a boyfriend (which is ok because i decided she was right for me) - now the other one is now saying she could be PREGNANT!

So all in all my life is offically f***ed now!

    I hate my dick :(

  12. OK, well most of that was over my head...

For now I disabled Dr. Watson (becuase even though it's not the problem...it can contribute to the porblem), and since then the game's been working as it should.

Do you think that's a good idea for now...because I don't expect 2kGames to really care about this since they're currently working on the sequel and they couldn't even get the last patch coded correctly...or release a SDK so we could mod...they made a great game but I don't expect any more support from them anymore.

Thank you for the reply and reviewing that for me, and please let me know about Dr. Watson. :hello:

Uninstall and re-install ;) sounds like the most stupid idea ever! But you know what! it normally works ;)
