VMware does Linux but if you don't care, you could just use Virtual PC (yuk) Last time I tried Virtual PC it was kinda slow as hell compared to VMware. Also, VMware has snapshots.

The reason nLite is good is because Nuhi is under no pressure, apart from the pressure he must put on himself, but thats not pressure its working at your own leisure. I reckon Nuhi could have "sold out" ages ago, but he didn't. Thing is, MS would never, in a million years, release something like nLite - its too good, its too advanced. It would probably cost $50,000. Why do you think they haven't developed their own or whatever! Nuhi knows nLite and vLite are gifts to the masses, I half think if MS owned the rights etc, we would never see nLite or vLite again, MS could just bury it. Remove all this: Manual Install and Upgrade (44Mb) Tour (17Mb) MSN Explorer (18Mb) Chinese, Japanese, Korean (100Mb?) You've saved about 180Mb there just with those 4 things. Unless you're Chinese, Japanese or Korean, or you do those pointless "Upgrade" installs (total mess!) then you arn't gonna miss anything of those 4 things above, that take up space for no reason.

Does anyone know how Windows converts a JPG to a BMP in the background? If we knew that and could do that on the command line it could save space if JPG images are used. It seems it has to be a BMP and they are huge! Like 2Mb per image.

BUMP More than 4 months have passed and still no answer? Why won't nLite do what you tell it to do? Why are some files obviously on some sort of "never-delete-no-matter-what" whitelist? What is the point in having an option to list files under [RemoveFiles] if nLite refuses to remove the files you list? Please answer. Although I don't know why I am asking this question because it simply gets ignored. Nuhi, it honestly is an insult to people who want to list files to be removed, instead now I have got to manually comment out the files in txtsetup.sif and manually delete each file off the ISO, its just silly, I don't understand it and never will. Why won't nLite remove all the files you list? I though that was the great advantage of having those sections in the "Last Session.ini"? It would indeed be a great advantage - if nLite actually did this.

Install vista via USB is so easy. Just copy the setups files to the main root of the usb and launch. Use the following command in cmd to copy: xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ d:\*.* is your vista instalation files location and e:\ is your usb drive letter. He wants to boot off the USB not just copy the files to it.

Does anyone know the tweak or hack to reverse this 16,000,000 half open connections thing? Without having to remake and re-install a whole OS? The exact message on Network Connection > Properties > Advanced, says: Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use System Restore to restore Windows to an earlier time (called a restore point). System Restore is located in the System Tools folder in Accessories. Although seriously I do not think for one second this is causing a slowdown on your bandwidth. However the 16 billion trillion zillion half open connectivity might be. Also see if you have DNS Client enabled although again, its probably not that.

I asked the developer of WinRAR why that happens (no icon on files above 500Mb) and he said its a Windows bug. A Windows bug - but he was looking to fix it.

No there are no MSU files stored in the image that I can find. What about the hotfix uninstallers?

How do I "navigate to" that key? What do Iuse to navigate to that key with? My oewn regedit? The regedit contained in the Vista WIM image thats now mounted? Theres only your post on the entire internet that mentions this reg load.

It doesn't NEED to go on a DVD - thats the lazy a$$ way of doing things. It can fit on a CD in the past, it also does with SP1, its only these MSU hotfixes adding to it. These hotfixes can be slipstreamed into it without it storing the backups but vLite does not do this! I am sure the WAIK does allow this, a "-nobackup" option. I don't get how 15Mb of MSU files adds 60Mb to the ISO. It should in theory add zero bytes like it always used to with 99% of Windows XP hotfixes when using nLite on XP. vLite is about making your ISO smaller dude - you can't just say its not! Why are you even here if you can just have it on a DVD - if thats the case you have 4.3GB to play with. Its the challenge of getting it on a 700Mb CD. If it were my religion, you'd have to respect it so then its my religion - I won't make an ISO over 700Mb, my god said so.

1 - Slipstreaming hotfixes into Windows XP never added size to the ISO. 2 - vLite is supposed to make your ISO smaller, I "slipstreamed" 15.7Mb of hotfixes, it made the ISO 60Mb bigger. 3 - This means a 672Mb ISO becomes 732Mb when you could just add the 15Mb of MSU hotfixes to install afterwards - then your ISO is 672 + the 15.7Mb = 687.7Mb. Easily fits on a CD still.

I integrated the post SP1 hotfixes into my Vista SP1 source. Problem is, integrating these 21Mb worth of MSU files has made the ISO size 57Mb bigger! On Windows XP you could integrate over 600 hotfixes into it (all post SP2, I mean 120 or so public ones and all 500+ of the others too) and that only increased the size by 0.02Mb - see my point? Whats the deal with Vista? Why does it add double the size of the MSU files to the resulting ISO? Because of hotfix uninstallers? vLite cannot remove those though, can it? I can add these files to my ISO and install them "post install" from a command line but I don't really like that, it takes extra time to install etc. If theres no way around this I guess I will just have to install them silently after installation of Vista is finished. I was including some hotfixes that are not "Important" though. Heres all the post SP1 hotfixes that are important... Here is a list of things I know change when you remove components from Windows with nLite: 1 - Files are taken from I386. 2 - INF files that are in I386 are edited. 3 - DRIVER.CAB has files taken out (depending on what you remove) 4 - TXTSETUP.SIF is edited. So altogether this is only 4 main things that change. These 4 things above are the only things I know of that do change, but there HAS to be something else because when I do the reverse of removing components and add back all the lines in all the INF files, all the files to I386 that are needed, all the files inside DRIVER.CAB and TXTSETUP.SIF, after all that which takes ages - it doesn't work! The service I added back does not start up. People don't seem to reply here on MSFN like they used to. Like my other topic about NLS files and why doesn't nLite remove them when you list it in the [RemoveFiles] section, no one ever replies... they used to which was what made MSFN so good... so whats changed? Does anyone know the answer to this post? What else is there nLite changes APART FROM those 4 things? For example - even though I put back in all the files and lines in the HIVE*.INF, DOSNET.INF, DRVINDEX.INF (any that changed, I added the needed lines back) and the service I am adding back is not even displayed in the services window - the files are all there but not the registry entries for the service. If I put back in the registry settings, even then the service will not start. So it can only be because something else has changed that I do not know about - what? Please, if you're going to reply, don't say... "Why are you trying to put stuff back, you could just remake it from your Last Session! I'm so clever!" ... because I have had to mod Windows further than nLite - a lot further, because nlite refuses to remove things like .NLS files and a whole slew of networking stuff I will never want or need the use of that CAN be removed Nuhi! Pfffffff, just slipstream SP3 into the RTM version of XP, put in the IE7 and WMP11 addons, DirectX_xx.dll files, then remove a load of stuff and it can be kept under 250Mb easy. yes still with SP3, Windows Update, IE7, WMP11. You do know what you're doing, otherwise you wouldn't have come here and posted.

OK thanks but... 1 - I already know exactly what NLS files I need and what I don't need. 2 - Its not just the 106 NLS files, Windows installs fine, I just end up with a bunch of files left in system32, left on the ISO in fact. These files are 106 NLS files and about 30 other files. Theres no reason why nLite should keep them. I can comment out all these files in TXTSETUP.SIF and Windows installs fine, believe me I know for certain these files do not have to be on the ISO, Windows is all working without these files, services are all working, not one single error, so I know these files can be removed. Only Nuhi can answer this one IMO. Bear in mind I am using SP3 here. So it is not trying to "keep a file and remove it" at the same time, the lists have been checked for this with ExamDiff Pro - not by hand, they have been properly checked. If so, the first things you should remove in nLite are: Languages: Chinese + Korean + Japanese (watch out since theres 2 Chinese entries there: simplified and traditional) 100Mb Networking: MSN Explorer 17Mb Operating System Options Manual Install and upgrade (unless you need to do that) 44mb Help and Support 23Mb Tour 17Mb So look, all you remove is 8 items. 4 of those are languages and 2 of those are both Chinese, 4 languages listed above, MSN Explorer, Manual Install and upgrade, Help and Support and Tour - all 8 items adds up to a total of approx 200Mb, give or take 1Mb. Considering that it is this easy to take off 200Mb from Windows (almost half the size of the OS on the CD!!!) without actually losing anything you would ever need. MSN Explorer - I have no clue what this is, don't want to know, have never needed it or used it, never will need it or use it. Did not even know this was in Windows until nLite displayed it in the removal options. It is 17Mb being wasted. Manual install and upgrade - only a retarded monkey would ewver do an "upgrade" from Windows 98 or 2000 or whatever. You do not get a clean install if you upgrade - its far harder to cope with the abortion that is an "upgrade" installation, than it is to just save all your C drive stuff somewhere else and wipe it all. The trick is to keep a small partition for Windows, then backing it up is not so bad. When I make an Acronis backup of my 20Gb C drive the backup is about 2Gb as a file, the other 480Gb of my 500Gb single drive is all set to a D partition wioth all my other stuff, downloads, game installs, big installs liike WAIK etc. All smaller programs I still install to C like Antivirus, Firewall, anything that might not quite work if its installed to D. The other thing with installing games to a D drive is you do not have to install them again after a Windows re-install, most times all the game needs is the serial in the registry - ummmm you did back up the registry before formating? lol. Help and Support - no point in this even being there. all it has ever done for me is waste my time when i could have really been finding the answer on Google. Its years since I used "Help and Support" in Windows, or it used me more like, but all I remember of it is being asked about 12 questions to be told at the end of it all "Sorry, the knowledgebase cannot find a solution" blah blah blah well no - it NEVER has once found a solution to anything I have ever tried to find an answer to, its a total waste of time, RAM and space. 23Mb plus it runs a service all the time too. If you do not speak Chinese, Korean or Japanese then just remove them. YOU personally will not notice any difference apart from your CD is 100Mb smaller. Yes you could in theory remove all languages except your own but that does not save any space as far as I know, because the characters are all based on English letters, it can fit in dozens of languages and the ISO is no bigger. Its only by experimenting and looking in vLite to see what nuhi starts off with, I know its pretty much JUST those 4 languages taking up 99.99% opf the space the languages are taking up. Shortcuts to local files are ".LNK" files. Like SCF and URL files, you cannot see the extension but it is LNK believe me. Run a BAT file or put in the end of your current bat file... DEL "%UserProfile%\Desktop\Program Name.lnk" OR it can also be... DEL "%AllUsersProfile%\Desktop\Program Name.lnk" Right click the shortcut and see where the file actually is, there are two desktops - your own username and "all users". The icon you see is identical on your desktop - but could be in either desktop folder so be careful. Also, if deleting some massive filename like "Acronis True Image Enterprise Server.lnk" it tends not to delete it, even with quotes in the filename like this: DEL "%AllUsersProfile%\Desktop\Acronis True Image Enterprise Server.lnk" So in this case you'd use: DEL %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\DESKTOP\ACRONI~1.lnk Use InstallRite to monitor where the program stores the serial in the registry. If it is an added file like with WinRAR it does not have reg serials it just has a "rarreg.key" file so yeah, you'll have to work some way into it so it either runs a reg file to put the serial in the registry or XCOPY the correct file to the destination DIR to keep the program working as the full version. It is possible with any program almost. /S is only for some programs, possibly the majority, just about. It can be such crazy stuff like "/v /qn" etc etc. Best way is look here at MSFN for the switches, theres a massive list somewhere. MSI nearly always uses "/quiet /norestart" on all MSI files. But then theres other MSI where in addition to that you can also add "PIDKEY" which would be your serial, even tell it to set up users a certain way for the program but only really good apps like Acronis have that built into the MSI. Nero is the same, you can specify the serial in the actual batch file in the command to install the program, although Nero is not an MSI but, side issue. Can you post your Last Session.ini on Rapidshare/Mediafire or attach it? Heres something else I noticed: I have to have 2 Last Session files, one removes components, then one removes files. If its all done in one go it leaves certain things in like Printer Drivers. Maybe I have conflicts between whats in KeepFiles and RemoveFiles? I wonder why nLite would not remove all those NLS and XLS files. They are all cabbed files that end up in system32, which are fine to remove according to nlite. It is XP SP3 - maybe its just an SP3 thing?
