  1. "Wait, WHAT? NOOOO, I don't WANT that, Johnny-Hacker/NSA/DHS/MS!" You'd think with this "free upgrade" folks would check before they click, just like installing Foreign Virus/Trojan (Win-X). FTR, My Brother LOVES Win-X (apparently he's got it on one of his PC's now). "It's purty!" (SMDH)
  2. Ummm. It *looks* like the OP wants it to "calculate *beforehand*. See the Picture posted (still haven't got the hang of re-linking). Seriously, you need to TIME it (roughly) FIRST (using given methods above) and THEN insert your "message". Be aware that even MS did a "rough guess" and on a FAST computer, XP installs WAY FASTER than MS original perceived.
  3. Please don't tell me you have Real-Time Avast *and* Norton running! Bad ju-ju! Use one *or* the other, not both (I suppose you're test one-at-a-time?). Too many things go wrong (incompatibility, etc.). Forget the POS Norton 2001, because WAY obsolete. And Updates are WAY long-gone, beside IF you could get the Definitions to install, nowadays they are YUGE! I know this since I "tricked" Symantec v10 into taking "latest" (it works) but my HDD space is eaten in terms of a whopping 400+MB! "Suspect virus"... have you tried Over-The-Top Upgrade? Boot to DOS, rename WIN.COM and Reinstall from Clean Source. Mind you, this will wipe any/all Updates (and maybe non-MS-Supplied Drivers) just like a 2K/XP "In-Place Upgrade" (common fix method). This is NO GUARANTEE a Trojan/Virus may still be lurking. Clean any/all Temp-type folders of contents to be sure. BTW, they have a wonderful way of "hiding" under generated names inside (usually) Windows/System32 folders (among other weird places). Best bet (since it's yours?) would be to nuke-and-reload. (sigh... been there, done that...)
  4. Brought to you by CompUSA! (I have a router "made by" CompUSA but in reality it's a LinkSys.) Check your MoBo. Betting it's made by a "real" Vendor. And welcome Aboard! Lots of Pre-XP/2000 Members still active here.
  5. Indeed. Check this Member's Topic. No WPA2. How well can you "reverse engineer" and "rewrite"? Seriously, WPA2 may be a lost effort for anything less than Windows2000 since the Vendors/Authors dropped support just like MS did. Again, sorry for the bad news.
  6. IRQ changes are only allowed if the INF is set up for it (more than one allowable IRQ) AFAICR. And PCI2.2 won't wok in PCI2.1 - look up the "Compliance" info on that. Same goes for APMvsACPI and that's why Win95 has heartburn with many ACPI-Compliant Mobos and the BIOS has to be changed to APM. In addition, many Mobos will shove PCI-Slot#1 into VGA-slot IRQ's (brain hurts right now, can't remember the term). If you're working with an Older MoBo you're going to run into a scad of problems with "fixed" IRQ's. That's why Win95 was deemed a "Plug-And-Pray" OS.
  7. I have NO CLUE about WPA2 but there ARE versions for 9x. Here's one from 2006 (actually internals are dated 2005 and INSIDE that is 2002). XP/2000/ME/98SE... Ver. 1.5 build 1602(?). You MAY be out of luck, since ME/98SE were dropped in v2.3. AFAIK, many users have found only WPA is available and do a mix of WPA(9x/ME)/WPA2(2K and up) under Dual-Boot conditions. Sorry. http://web.archive.org/web/20060423011839/http://www.boingo.com/download_windows.html#
  8. As soon as I get a PC up-and-running to "upgrade" (to get it logged) and then "reinstall" not-WinX then yeah. Otherwise, HE$$ NAW!!! AFAICT, I'm good until 2020. Then I'll start using Linux.
  9. You're lacking an Update that you MANUALLY download and install. I'm quoting myself (from another thread) since I've yet to figure this new board out. HTH (P.S. ALWAYS manually install WUA-related Updates before even DREAMING of going to Windows Updates). Scroll down to the quoted thread/post...
  10. But FF does NOT play Videos for many websites (e.g. Twitter Videos). This subject has come up before. Dencorso (in e.g. XP) uses (sometimes) IE8 and (mostly) FireFox and (occasional for specific websites) Chrome. I've confirmed this and currently still at FireFox v12 and *if* I want to view some (e.g.) Twitter Videos then I use Chrome. Many websites (CNN, Fox) have videos that refuse to play in Firefox (get a message that "Browser does not support"). So you see, many users prefer Chromium variations to get the full spectrum of abilities. Firefox has yet to "fix" this "problem". HTH
  11. "Browser.exe" is (apparently) the Yandex Browser - http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/Yandex-27449-program.aspx The above is just for reference. Can't help right now (i.e. "blow up" a Test Win7x64) but something seems amiss.
  12. You said the Version for x86 worked, so here's where they came from. Scroll down and get the x64 one and try it. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/21854/AHCI-Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Driver-for-Intel-6-Series-Chipset-Based-Desktop-Boards What you provided as a link was older. This one should work (if the x86 one did). HTH
  13. Timing that the BIOS didn't recognize/cope with. Glad that fixed it.
  14. @Dibya - the link is given above, so I'm confused as to why you asked. "HFSLIP2000", right there!
  15. Did you by chance somehow "undo" "Microsoft Update" (Other MS Products)? It's different than "Windows Update" (only does Windows). I see there are Updates on MS and there's no reason to not be getting them unless you somehow "turned it off". If you want to manually get and install them, use Windows Updates Downloader (aka WUD). Scroll down... http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/166-user-contributed-update-lists/
  16. Then my Dell I531 isn't getting WindowsX, then is it?
  17. Looks like Via Chipset. Drivers should be provided. If not, they're still available on the Internet. The suggestion jaclaz gave is probably your best bet. The only problem I foresee is the "individual wires" and matching the to the link jaclaz gave. If you go that route, I'm pretty sure I have sufficient info here to help out with the match-up in case you can't figure it out. Be *sure* you match them properly. FYI, those "individual wires" are *surely* marked in some way (ref the pinout link).
  18. Following this new and improved policy.... "KBnnnnn Fixes some problems. We won't tell you exactly what it fixes, but trust us." ...MS apparently doesn't want anyone to find out exactly WHAT is buggered anymore.
  19. FYI - Always best to install MoBo (Chipset) Drivers *before* Video Drivers. Always. As a matter of fact, that's always been the recommended order from the Vendor.
  20. Samsung SyncMaster 204B (LCD) Native Resolution: 1600 x 1200 at 60 Hz The INF comes up as - -sm204Ta="SyncMaster 204T/204Ts/204B,SyncMaster Magic CX201Ts(Analog)" -sm204Td="SyncMaster 204T/204Ts/204B,SyncMaster Magic CX201Ts(Digital)" Both use the exact same settings so that appears to have no relevance. http://techreport.com/review/5660/nvidia-geforce-fx-5600-ultra-gpu http://www.nvidia.com/page/fx_5600.html The Video Card (VGA, obviously) has both VGA and DVI (+S-Video). I don't see any Drivers (support) for this for Win98? Where did you get it from?
  21. +1 (same here). Reorganizing/Compressing and burning to DVD like crazy for an HDD transfer to my "new" PC. I was unaware that you had "upgraded to SP4" a potentially boogered OLD install. If you have a SPARE (empty) HDD, I'd use THAT to start with. If you have a trojan/virus left over, you may be in for a (bad) surprise keeping anything "old" accessible to it.
  22. EITHER one of them? If so then my bet is the Timing Mismatch (as I stated). Dell DOES like Matched Timing. I've had a fun time swapping RAM around in multiple older Dell/HP/Compaq to finally get a good combination. I've used a Single RAM and checked the timing (using programmatic tools) and marked accordingly, thus allowing MATCHING RAM when putting in more than one. Side note - Do you have the latest/last BIOS update installed?
  23. Well, if you'd have READ the second link down to the post by "runner2035" at "Oct 29, 2010 at 7:01AM" you'd have found the exact same REG entries. And further down to "stagepoint" at "Dec 09, 2010 at 11:42AM". Seriously, dude, don't get huffy. I (and jaclaz) gave you the info. Just read more than the "Headline". Heck, even jaclaz' link boiled down to "best answer", no?
  24. Scroll down to "Old ME SP1". http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm There's a link there that points back to the MSFN Topic as well. Lots of various. http://erpman1.tripod.com/w9xmeupd.html
  25. Save time (in the future) - Install, use -X- Downloader, install dotNet (for nLite), install nLite, Integrate -X- files, burn the CD, Reinstall from it (OY!), then use POSREADY trick. That way you have a Fully Up-To-Date (until End-Of-Life) CD should you need to reinstall. (Note - xdot.tk Downloader Script will need "tweaking" since one file is attempted to be downloaded from MS' FTP site and is inaccessible). My 2¢... Yeah, you have some kind of "something" going on because that "Folder" is your Restore Point Folder/Files. They can (usually) be viewed with a Bootable Live-OS CD/DVD/USB of some kind. A running OS blocks access to them (AFAICR). Oh, and SP3 is just that. It doesn't include all of the Post-SP3 Updates, so yeah, you'll want them. Basically, (XP with SP3 Pre-Integrated) + (Post-SP3 Fixes) + (POSReady Fixes).
