  1. Thread necromancy rules!

.. anyway - after a bit of testing myself and pondering. Even after the VCache settings and the rest - my system would bork (self-restart before reaching the GUI without any messages) if I were to add more than 1GB of ram. However, I found there is a way around that without hard limiting your ram through msconfig in such a case. I thought this might help those who too might have had troubles trying to get into windows while using more than 1gb of ram despite the use of vcache tweaks.

Using a freeware tool called XMS-DISK can effectively let you use up to 3GB (1gb direct + 2gb through a ramdisk) of ram overall and use it all as well without any troubles. Unzip it into a folder such as 'ramdisk' into your c drive. Then add the following line to your autoexec.bat file:

    C:\ramdisk\xmsdsk.exe 262144 Z: /C1 /T /Y

Z: will be the drive letter it will be assigne dto so as not to interfere with your other drive lettering order. The number 262144 is to handle 256mb additional ram (256 x 1024). So if you have say 1.5gb ram , set it to 512000.

Once in windows - you'll need to set your swapfile to the new ramdisk (z:) to it's fullest size so that windows can use the ram above 1gb in the form of a ram-based swapfile (rather than disk-based).

Now, there is a drawback to using this workaround. To access safe-mode you'll need to use the step-by-step method to load your config.sys & autoexc.bat (set no to load registry and no to loading drivers). Otherwise the ramdisk will not utilize the ram above 1gb in safemode and the PC will likely self-reboot before hitting even the safemode GUI again.

Additionally another drawback - being that the ramdisk is now using that extra ram above 1gb - your 'my computer' property sheet will only show 1gb of ram as it's allocated the rest above it for the ramdisk (now used as a RAM-swapfile).

  2. Must be using 98SE...................

I dunno... I've never had problems with it >_>

This PC is using 98se and hasn't been reinstalled since I set it up over a year ago.

My other PC is also using 98se and not been reinstalled since '99.. 7 years ago.

*shrugs* Your milage may vary >_>

  3. Wattage is pointless in a PSU. What you're looking for is something that costs at least 30 bucks, from a decent brand. Cheap 500W power supplies almost always blow out by the time you hit 400 watts, dono't waste money on them. With a system like I outlined, you'll never need more than a 350W unit unless you're running a server with a few hard drives.

Do keep note as well that you should check reviews for each brand. Wattage may not be a prime issue but reliability over the 12v rails are. You can have the best strongest PSU in the world but if the voltage flow over the power rails are poor and heavily fluctuate then you'll end up with more problems than using a PSU too weak for the PC. In the end you could ultimately burn out some components as well from it.

Additionally as a personal rule of thumb...

...If you use any additional fans, put them on the same powerline and not on those being used for Hard disks or other drives. Otherwise you'll ensure lack of flow and an overload on that one line. This applies to those fans that use a MOLEX power connector (same type used for IDE Hard Disks).

... Go for a mid-range priced CPU and not the cheapest you can get. The cheapest ones seem to have an incredibly short lifespan. A good example can be shown in reviews of a certain $10.00~ 400w PSU on newegg.

  4. To start you'll ned an FTP to work with.

This is the FTP SERVER I currently use. Though it's shareware it gets the job done without any problems.

    Sami FTP Server

As for an FTP CLIENT (to connect to an ftp) do a search on 'WS-FTP LE'. When I'd used it , it was freeware at the time. However, I'm unsure if they made it shareware or not since then as I speak through 5 years of not using it.

If you also need an easy-to-setup and use HTTP server to get your boards running on, you can try Abyss WebServer. You'll also need to have PHP installed to run PHP scripts which IPB is based off of. There is an easy tutorial on the abyss site on setting it up.

As for setting up MySQL, there might be a simple tutorial somewhere...

    Wish you luck. :)

  5. Winamp plays more than just Vorbis - it plays ogg just fine and other formats. Using winamp 2.95 here. Even plays OGM files and the like without a problem (add OGM/OGV to your winamps 'nullsoft directshow decoder' config such as 'MPG;MPEG;M2V;AVI;OGM;OGV')

Theora files I don't know the extention for it. However, I'm sure there are decoder plugins for winamp to handle those types. Aside from that - wianmp has played every media format I've thrown at it.

Speex uses the OGG format according to a quick googling.

    Same as theora...

so: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Filter...ra_and_FLAC.htm should provide the directshow filters you need to play those formats. As long as you have the filters installed winamp should be able to play those OGG formats as well using it's directshow decoder without a problem.

  6. Just checked out 'ifn.exe'...

the reason it dissappears after you run it is due to:

    1) Once run it either moves or copies itself to another folder then deletes the original

    2) gives itself a randomly selected name in a randomly selected path from it's own list inside the 'C:\program files\common files\' directory. In my case it ended up as 'C:\program files\common files\oiFxAtf.exe'

    3) Sets the registry link with a random name to the path it sets itself to. In my case the keyname was '*GW'.

    4) It will not show up in the task list as it instead hooks into processes and not runs as the file itself which would show in the process lists.

So in essence it really isn't a rootkit at all but a process hook while hiding itself through renaming itself and changing directories each time it's run. It's easily removed through safemode and through any other unregistration method. Had it been a rootkit you wouldn't even be able to see it through safemode either I believe.

  7. The PCIe cards available then aren't going to have some legacy Win98 driver, are they? So I guess what I'm asking is, what is the limiting factor in keeping Win98 going?

That is where you'd have to do some research. I know a member on this board (PETR?) runs a PCI-E geforce on his 98 machine with no issues. Just falls down to what you're looking for and who supplies the support. Best way to shop in this case is to pick out some models you're interested in and search around for drivers for them. Rule out the ones you cannot readily get drivers for and then work from there.

  8. I would believe the pro/con of flash as follows:

    PRO:

    1) Fully graphical and fluid animation

    2) More options and 'eye candy' abilities

    CON:

    1) Increased size leaves users waiting

    2) A slow pc will see your site slow+choppy and not fluid

    3) Harder to manage later on should you make changes as you would have to change each flash 'page'

    4) Bandwidth consumption increases due to each user having to download the whole 'site' (flash) to do stuff rather than follow only to the areas they want.

    5) Older browsers or browsers with a great amount of security features set will cause your site to be unusable

5a) Proxies/Firewalls configured to deny flash objects will also deny usability of your site

    6) Flash is not accessable to many impared (of any degree) users

.. I'm sure there are more con's but thats what I can think of off the top of my head. HTML is more than good to use as it's backward compatible, usable in many other browsers, to programs designed to make it usable to impared users. If you need any other fancy effects you can cover that using javascript or VBScript.

Any html site can look like a flash site with the right scripting in the right places and still be more usable than a pure flash site. Tinker with the idea and you might be suprised.

The power of your site rests solely in your hands. However, it's best to tailor to many users rather than some. Though if it is just as a personal site that isn't going to be expected to be viewed by many, then perhaps flash is a viable options purely for the satisfaction.

  9. I used to use the free version of Invision Beta3 for quite a while. It was feature rich at the time and wasn't hard to setup but also required mysql installed. Just if you're someone like me - you'd tend to lose pride in something not done by yourself. So...it got taken down in favor of my own forum board software I've been personally working on which doesn't need mysql at all. Which can be seen in use by following the 'board' link in my signature.

edit: .. which i need to redo since it seems a 4-line cap has been recently enforced on signatures. The 'board' link mentioned would be here.

  10. If so you must create it from scratch there if you want to add extra context menu items that appear only under My Computer.

Indeed, under the key 'shell' you add additional keys to add those menu's.

Here is one to start you off :)

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\mystuff]
    @="Important Stuff (.mydocs)"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\mystuff\Command]
    @="C:\\Windows\\explorer.exe C:\\import~1"

Were it says 'mystuff' you can edit to any key you wish. The order the items show in the nmenu depend on the alphabetical order of your named keys.

You can further customize it through using the layout for the 'find' command on the mycomputer right-click.

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\find]
    @=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\find\command]
    @="C:\\WINDOWS\\Explorer.exe"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\find\ddeexec]
    @="[FindFolder(\"%l\", %I)]"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\find\ddeexec\application]
    @="Folders"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\find\ddeexec\topic]
    @="AppProperties"

  11. edited out - jumped the gun here and misread a few sections. My apologies as I additionally know nothing about ASP here.

Afterthought: Have you tried referencing your array directly such as myarray(0) myarray(1) myarray(2) and so forth? Additonally, have you tried using an array conversion function to convert it into a string? Since the myarray in red seems to be sent as if you're trying to send the whole array at once.

There is a good tutorial on ASP arrays on

    http://www.codefixer.com/tutorials/arrays.asp

    http://www.codefixer.com/tutorials/array_functions.asp

  12. Can you somehow show us the name of this file that if giving such problems? I once had this problem due to a file having a '?' and someother characters. Forget how I removed it but it was created by a batch script I had written which when converted to an exe had strange results (pipes didn't play well with conversion) such as the undeletable filename mentioned.

For example, try to name a file .htaccess in Windows.

That's possible using a utility thats free and that I've used for a very longtime. It's basically a property page replacement but doesn't actually replace the properties page. It adds 'Properties plus' under the properties selection. Allows easy bacth name/extention conversion, timestamp editing, and lets you even name those files with a '.' before it (like .htaccess).

    DLoad: http://mechresource.myvnc.com/upload/Prope...s_Plus_1.65.exe (225kb / Executable SFX Zip)

Perhaps try to rename it with this program even? It's a tiny little explorer extension even :)

edit: WOW this thread was raised from the dead - nice one erpdude :thumbup [/sarcasm]

  13. One question:

Are you, like me, opening the "My Document" folder via the C: folder tree or via the "My Document" special tree?

I find the "My Document" special tree pretty useless.

Got in in two places (removed from the desktop):

    1) Right-Click menu of 'my computer'

    2) Through the navigation of C: using the 'my computer' folder in my taskbar.

    http://mechresource.myvnc.com/upload/mydoc_areas.png

Do you or other computer users have the same behavior?

Is it possible to get rid of the Document and Setting crap in XP and have a C: tree that looks like W98 (admitting there is only one user)?

Did that to XP long ago before XP SP1... just involved changing all of the 'special folder' paths using tweak UI and and few other path changes in the registry.

  14. You said you have the SBLive using IRQ5? I would think that would be extremely problematicle, as the dos emulation cannot share IRQ's. It is an ISA emulation that needs to have an IRQ all to itself. If the Windows SBLive driver is using IRQ 5, then the dos emulator, from what I understand, would crash Windows or simply not run correctly if the SBLive was using IRQ 5 at the same time. And it would be, as the Windows dos box audio would be routed to the SBLive. So the sharing of IRQ's would occur. Problem there.

The SBLive I have does not load any emulation drivers seperately. Only the drivers for the card itself and the gameport.

  15. Best thing I could suggest is to give it a try on windows 98 first before converting them all.

    .. Searching some more...

Min Req for the BETA oblivion patch:

    Minimum Requirements

    Supported OS Windows 98

    Windows Me

    Windows 2000

    Windows XP

Dependencies Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion full version

  16. Im sure it probably could. Considering that Quake 4 and Doom 3 worked with the exe edits and now with the kernel patch instead of the direct edits to the game itself.

Both of those games required a minimum of 2K/XP .

edit: Doing a lil searchign over google right now. I've so far found screenshots of someone running oblivion through WINE in linux. So that might mean it's again possible to play oblivion on windows 98.

  17. I've been using an SB Live! 5.1 digital without problems. Just use the drivers for an SB PCI-512 or the modded drivers provided by NGO. Works fine in windows without having to leave the GUI and booting into native DOS. Just need to select it as the primary device in your multimedia settings for both sound/midi.

.. Most of the cards I've tried wouldn't intialize properly in DOS due to 'unable to find SBlaster at int 220h' etc. Even other similar SB Live! cards wouldn't give satisfactory results. Even my old yamaha YMF-724 souldn't initialize the Blaster in DOS with it's own dos drivers and the environment variables correctly set. Went through testing about 8-9 different PCI soundcards before I found one that worked right for dos sound/midi playback in windows. It also works fine when installed with another soundcard as well as long as the other soundcard has the legacy drivers disabled (which don't normally workto begin with) and that the SB Live 5.1 digital is set to use IRQ 5.

note: this is a PCI card I speak of - not ISA.

I'll see if I can fetch the actual model number off mine tomorrow as it's a bit late to take down my pc for a bit at the moment.

EDIT: Just tested the Robotnik Demo - It plays and sounds fine (music is pretty good too actually) in Windows through my SB Live 5.1 Digital. Just gives a notice that the display may not be synced right (references windows 95 not 98) before load. However, it appears to sync just perfect to me.

  18. If the mic is working then the sound has something to do with your sound settings. You've checked the volume control on the front of your toshiba as well? Also double-checked all the volume settings in the volume control panel? Have you tried playing an mp3 or a wave file to make sure you're not getting sound from your speakers?

To Start... Which model toshiba is the one you have?

...I've a toshiba Satellite (A15-S157) myself and have had no problems.

  19. 'Chozo4' - so you have a working Windows 98SE system, and the sound & network builtin are Windows 98SE compatible? What's the CPU?

    Board specs found here.

    Board drivers found here.

... the cool-and-quiet drivers are not available for windows 98 (so it says). However, the CnQ drivers aren't neccessary as it only lets you control how the system handles fanspeeds automatically if enabled to do so. I would rather personally keep the fans running at full to be sure it stays cool all the time.

The CPU is also shown in the signature :)

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ [san diego]. It's stock 2.4ghz currently overclocked to 2.6ghz with a 325x8 multiplier set. My board can support the FX chips (dual core) and the Opteron chips (also dual-core but have an impressive on-board cache). However, windows 98 will not take advantage of the second core but any applications written specifically to handle multiple-cores will take advantage of them if I'm correct.

The sound built-in is a RealTek 8.1 Surround. However, I have it disabled due to the sound hardware not amplifying the output and not covering my needs. Interesting to note that despite this being a windows 98 (32-bit) machine, the 64-bit drivers for the built-in sound did in fact work as well. Also note that most built-in sound is *NOT* hardware amplified and so will require powered speakers to actually get the sound to an acceptable volume. I find it better to use installable sound cards such as a 'Yamaha YMF-724' or 'SoundBlaster LIVE! 5.1 Digital' which actually have amplification and greater compatibility with most apps including legacy (DOS) games.

The built-in LAN i use regularly and have set to max throughput instead of cpu conservation mode (less throughput). No complaints whatsoever with it. Only drawback is that all the other lans I connect to are 10/100 so.. cannot take advantage of the 1gb speed just yet with it.

  20. The mainboard listed in my sig (EPoX 9nDA3-J) supports windows 98 and has built in 8.1 surround sound + 1GB Lan. Using a 380watt PSU at the moment so it's not exactly very power-hungry either.

However, it does not have built-in video. As long as it's an NF3 chipset and made by EPoX it supports windows 98.

Just be wary of getting used mainboards off EBAY. Got mine off ebay as it was advertised used but working. However, I went through hell reflashing the BIOS due to it somehow stating a 'lock bit' set in random places which never existed to begin with. Took about 16-17 reflash attempts before it successfully reflashed. Though now the bios is completely fine and no longer gives trouble when needing to reflash to update the bios version.

.. it also has a damaged contact in DIIMM #0 slot but thankfully it goes to an unused contact on the back of the memory chips.

On a side note: there are a few other threads regarding a similar topic in this forum :)

  21. I must be the minority! Been using norton for the last ... 8 years without any problems or false positives.

Before you think 'j00 n00b. n0rt0n iz teh sux!'... I do *NOT* and never will use the newer bloatware which has become of norton either. Which of course I could fully agree as being pretty poor as it focuses more on a pretty GUI with one button scan all while trying to be more than just a virus scan. They end up spreading their priorities way too thin which will be the downfall in the end in my opinion. Personally, If I'm ever forced to use any newer version of Norton I'll gladly switch to something else.

Now... I haven't gone out and checked out many others other than norton since it does the job and does it well for me. It's not a resource hog and is not a memory hog at all either while scanning every single file and inside archives.

For those who complained (if any) about it sucking up resources when installed - if you remove the registry links that auto-load vxd's associated with auto-protect, you can free up those resources and any memory used from it. You'll effectively disable auto-protect if you don't need it running yet claim back those resources. I'm not sure if this still applies to the newer versions however.

... so anyway - Don't click this image link norton-dislikers. You just might see an old version of norton in it. :P

  22. I will personally use javascript where and whenever I need it as I use it as the backbone for specific situations.

Any form of client-side scripting in websites be it javascript or other can end up exploiting the users machine just because it's already being run on the client as it's being retrieved. Just javascript is getting the spotlight on it compared to the other forms of clientside scripting which is why it's now raising a concern. Once javascript is hosed .. other clientside scripting will be used to do the same in the future.

it basically falls upon two things:

    1) if a webpage can be dynamically changed - it can be manipulated using any form of scripting

    2) as long as HTML at the very least can access content on the users pc - even using the file:// prefix, any html or scripting can use that to run programs remotely on the users pc. All done through dynamically adding and editing the pages content on load or after load of the page. Even through taking advantage of remote-loading through IE through a few distinct clsid's abused by gator.

Once at least those two things are dealt with scripts can't do much more. However, removing the ability to dynamically edit a page through scripting defeats much of a scripts purpose in 90% of cases where it is used.
