  1. It's not superior in any way, except for DOS compatibility. Windows 98 just does what I want it to do and nothing more. Windows XP just tries to be intuitive, which p***es me off most of the time. Yes, I know I can just disable/delete all the bloated crap of XP, but I don't really feel like it. I grew up using a Windows 3.1/95 machine also; so I know how to "deal" with a Win9x machine. I've found it considerably more of a pain in the a** to fix major issues in an XP box than with a 98 box. With 98, I can just boot do DOS or Safe Mode and do whatever I want. XP... well in my experience, it's just a b!tch to fix. System Restore is a joke.
  2. I see no point in locking this thread, because in two months, someone will create another one. We should just have a separate forum in MSFN dedicated to the 98 vs. XP war, which has been going for.... what like four years now. On a somewhat related topic, I'm pretty sure Link21 just has a Word template with all of his 98 vs XP arguments, because his posts are nearly the same on AnandTech and MSFN. I don't think there's ever gonna be an end to the argument, because everyone has their own opinion and we won't stop until we've cemented our opinions into the minds of each individual on the forum. Actually, that's already been done so I guess the threads just won't stop! I am not going to diss Windows 98SE because I am a loyal user myself. But the only reason for the amount of popularity within an operating system is how it is marketed. After windows 95, everyone knew that the DOS based OS was a load of crap, but people bought Windows 98 because it was so widely known after Microsoft shoved their "ideas" and products down our throats. It was about three times worse for XP, the first OS to actually have television commercials for it. The stats on the TheCounter.com speak for themselves. Why do you think Linux is still at 0% usage compared to other OS's. Apple had their chance, but Jobs and Wozniak were too stupid to act on it. Open Source operating systems still have a chance but their "policies" have limited them to where they are now. To summarize it, you can sell a piece of crap, just as long as you market it correctly. And Windows NT was never really marketed that widely except as a business OS. But I've really gotten to liking 98SE nowadays. Sometimes I think that it IS time to upgrade to a new OS, so I slap on XP Pro, I see how bloated it is, I trim it down, I get a WGA message stating that I am a criminal, I ignore it. Then I think back to the good old days of simplicity and DOS, so I reformat, put in the old 98se cd and continue where I left off. @Link21, you keep asking me why I use a 16-bit POS. Because I FEEL like it... why do I smoke cigarettes? Why do I eat fastfood? Why do I breathe? Why the hell am I still alive?
  3. Yeah, if it wasn't for windows update, I wouldn't need IE at all anymore. I'm really starting to find that I don't even care if my software is outdated, with the exclusion of web-related stuff, for security reasons and such. For the time being, I'm just gonna leave IE 6 intact on my computer, and continue to use FireFox. The only thing I have to say to Mr. Gates is this: I don't care if MS drops support for Windows 98 or IE. I still use WMP 7.1 for videos (works perfectly with the proper codecs), MS Office '97 Pro, MS Publisher '97 and whatever other old MS crap their possibly could be. The support for those products was dropped years ago, and it's not like those products self-destructed the second support was dropped. The software I use now is stuff I plan on using for years to come, and I couldn't give two s***s about updating them. The same applies for my OS (win98se), and IE, which I rarely use anyway. To Summarize: MS is dropping support for its older products... I don't give a rats a**. I reformat so many times anyways that I'm too quick for the "security threats" that I'm gonna be exposed to.
  4. If it was working before on the same hardware and you have reinstalled windows, then I'd say there is something wrong with either your USB port, the card or your chipset drivers. I had an 802.11b card that would cause my computer to BSOD every time I tried to use it, after I had changed the motherboard. Bear in mind that if it is the hardware that is causing the problem, NO operating system will be stable with it. The wifi card I had actually went through my family's washing machine, (double-spin) for about 25 minutes... the thing still worked, but the signal cut out every 5 minutes. IMO, either there is a problem with the chipset drivers or something happened to the hardware. And judging from the age of the drivers you're using, I'd say its that.
  5. In my mind, if you only get a free TRIAL, but you have to pay for the actual program, it AIN'T free!! Now, a FREE program would be something like Mozilla Firefox. For christ sake, it says the f***ing price right next to the product!
  6. I know this is a bit late now, but gamestop.com reports that the Sims 2 will run on Win98 or later. You should have no problems running the game on 98SE!
  7. Yeah, one thing I learned about laptops is that unless you use the OS that came with your computer, you WILL have some weird issues. I tried win2k pro on my year old hp laptop which was "designed" for winxp and 2k. I can't even get a proper chipset driver for it and the cpu heatsink fan runs at FULL speed all the time for no reason at all. I also had a POS Dell in 2002... I installed 2k and it crashed half the time... I installed 98SE and suddenly the DVD-ROM drive was no more It's 2006 now... if anyone wants to continue using 98se on highend computers (like me, hehe) then I suggest you build your own desktop. That is the only guarenteed method for stability, compatibility and quality in my opinion. If you want a 98SE compatible laptop, do what I was doing: scope out eBay.
  8. I was thinking the same thing when I saw that error; that Microsoft had disallowed windows update for windows 98. Then I installed IE5.5 SP2 and all was well. I don't see that much has changed with windows update however, so I'm wondering why it's producing that error now. A month ago I could use IE5.0 to do anything. EDIT: Next install time, I'm using 98-Lite to get rid of IE completely... take THAT windows update!
  9. I know of one thing that worked for me, which is: Power Management Properties > in "Turn off Hard Disks" change the setting to "Never." Also, I don't really think this will make much of a difference but, you might wanna make sure that DMA is enabled.
  10. No offense Dels, but I really have no idea what the hell you just said. I think that the only people that still use windows me are the people that like the OS. Those people are few and far between, but they are out there, and we should respect them just the same. I personally didn't see very much wrong with WinMe on an old Dell I stuck the OS on. But I tried it on my main desktop, which I built a few months ago... I didn't make it past the video driver installation before I went back to Win2k, then back to 98se, and here I am! In my experience with the 9x OS series, stability is ALL in the hardware.
  11. Oh, wow a lot of frieking help that is! In a win9x/me support forum, exactly what good does it do to tell someone to upgrade to a better OS? Alright, I don't really know what the setting is in ME, but perhaps it's the same as it is in 98se: Go to "My Computer" > View > Folder Options > View > uncheck "Allow All Uppercase Filenames."
  12. I don't know about everyone else, but I have had far more problems forcing games to work on windows 2000 than on any other OS, XP included. Please keep in mind however that this was on Win2k with NO Service Pack. (I had 28.8k connection, I didn't feel like downloading it lol.) Windows 98 works like a charm for just about any game. The only game that I really know of that was designed only for 2000/XP was GTA: San Andreas. When the game did run on 98SE, it ran absolutely perfect. On XP it was laggy as hell, and on 2000, it ran pretty similar as on 98SE. Frankly, I don't really care about game compatibility that much with win98se, because I really don't play that many games except for GTA (all of them) and Halo, all of which seem to run fine on the "junker 98" OS. Ahh, one man's trash is another man's treasure... remember that one, link.
  13. Man, I'm surprised Link21 hasn't found this thread yet... though, maybe he's just avoiding it. I do agree that windows 98SE is the best OS to come out of microsoft. It is a shame that most people (the general public) does not understand how to properly configure a 9x box to their advantage (or an XP box for that matter.) Even the XP enthusiasts don't understand how great the OS can be, and the potential that the DOS kernel still has. With all of the updates, bug fixes, and USP, Win98se works better for the average home user than XP or any NT OS ever could.
  14. Yeah, I've seen that problem before too, it's really nothing to worry about. Just do what RJARRRPCGP said, and you'll be fine.
  15. Heh, I guess it doesn't surprise me that Total Commander would work on Win3.1, I mean, it's basically windows explorer reloaded. I have heard of that registry tweak, Chozo, to force logon to windows, though because I'm on a fresh windows installation, which still hasn't even frozen yet, I don't really wanna mess around with regedit right now. Perhaps in the future...
  16. That post in particular comes to mind. After reading that post the thought came to me that I was using (at the time) an OS (winXP) that had all of those extra features that I never used. Basically I saw no point in upgrading to a newer OS if the old one I had did everything I needed.
  17. Better make that 3 people. When this thread began, I was using windows 2000 on my main computer. Last night I installed Win98se, and it's the ONLY OS on this computer. So far with a fresh install, all updates, and USP2.1a, I've had no crashes, no hangs and overall it's pretty goddamn fast! I don't think this thread should be closed anymore. This thread is getting to be just like cigarettes... it's pointless and retarded, but it's gotten very addictive. A lot of the main points that the pro-NT people are mostly what has made me COMPLETELY switch back to 98se. There is now one XP computer in my house, and 3 98se computers, and they're all running perfectly, except for the XP computer, which needs to be reformatted again.
  18. hey hey hey, don't make generalizations like that, I'm 17 and I'm fighting for windows 98 support to the DEATH! Ok, maybe that's a little extreme, but you get the idea. You don't have to be a young snob to be an upgrade-nazi, that's for sure. I'm actually taking what people have said in this thread into account: People keep saying that a lot of us are satisfied with our computer power and software and don't want to upgrade anymore. I fully support that statement. Though I realize that certain people participating in this forum demand to upgrade to the latest and greatest, flushing the old sh!t down the toilet!
  19. Ahh, yes, the corporate versions. I got me one of those from a well known P2P network a couple years ago. I thought I had completely dodged activation so I could use XP Pro on my laptop, but no no. As soon as microsoft inflicted the Genuine Advantage Tool, Mr. Gates found out my OS wasn't all "legit" and suddenly I couldn't get anymore updates. You know what they say: "Putting a non-updated XP box on the internet is like committing OS suicide." That's about when I shattered the XP Pro cd and ran screaming back to my win2k and 98se boxes. (I have since then got a legitimate copy of XP Pro, which I still don't have on any of my computers, because I'm too lazy to install it and I just plain don't like it.)
  20. Ahahaha, that's awesome... Link 21 rigged his own poll... in everyone ELSES favor. That made my day. Below is a list of unsupported hardware: Multiple processors Dual Core processors Large amounts of memory Below is a list of software limitations: No file level permissions. No security policies. No non admin users at all. Everyone that logs on can do whatever they want to the system. Below is a list of my responses to the first section: I only gots one AMD Athlon XP, and I plan on sticking with one for a long, long time I don't use dual core processors I got one gig, anyone who needs more is a greedy bastard Below is a list of my responses to the second section: Most of my family doesn't even know how to access the C:\ drive See above response GOOD, I hate seeing the message "You do not have sufficient priviliges" or some crap whenever I try to change something on my computer. My comp is a single user pc, I really just don't care.
  21. Doesn't look like the poll results are in your favor, huh Link. lol, I actually thought more would be in favor of having 98/Me trashed, but I guess I was wrong luckily. Perhaps more people have gotten a more open minded view of software, such as not judging OS's by age and kernel, but more on their own opinion and experiences.
  22. don't get ahead of yourself, luckily windows xp doesn't control 90% of the software market yet. It is true that about 75% of people use XP right now. I seriously think the only reason that XP ever became so popular was because of the new interface and the publicity. I see nearly 3 windows xp COMMERCIALS per day. That's asbolutely ridiculous.
  23. Oh, wow, Link, thanks for disregarding that whole post where I bashed the hell out of you. I just went to dictionary.com to define the word "junker" by the way. I was surprised it was a word, but here it is: "Junker n. A member of the Prussian landed aristocracy, a class formerly associated with political reaction and militarism." Seems this whole time you weren't dissing windows 98 as much as you thought you were. Perhaps you should dive head first into politics instead of technology, lol.
  24. Hey, Link: Your whole life cannot revolve around the "New Technology" (NT) kernel... it is the core of a f***ing operating system created by business man, Bill Gates, among thousands of developers. Why do you care so f***ing much, anyway? Your whole argument has been the same thing: "If support for junker 9x had been dropped long ago, apps today would be much higher quality than they are now." We get the picture... now shut the f*** up, and don't bash Windows 95/98/Me in a Windows 95/98/Me forum. I don't really want to give you ideas, but create a thread in the 2000 or XP forum and rant about how much 9x sucks and how great NT would be if it wasn't for 9x, alright? f*** OFF PLEASE! EDIT: Hey Petr, you got the GeForce 6200? Nice... I just go the 6600 AGP 8x and ran San Andreas on that... man it runs like a dream. For a game that was designed for 2000/XP only, the game runs BETTER on 98se than on any NT OS. It hasn't lagged up at all on full graphics and resolution. I gotta try Doom 3 next.
  25. @Link21 - You have to be the most ignorant person I have ever seen! It's all the same thing over and over; first you bash 9x and say its junk and should not be supported, then your argument is refuted by one of the many 9x supporters (hell, this is a win9x SUPPORT forum, not an ANT-SUPPORT for 9x forum, right?) over and over again. I really don't care if win9x is not supported anymore. It seems to be that for every mainstream application that is unsupported from the 9x series, us 9x users gain an open source app. IE -> Mozilla FireFox Outlook -> Mozilla Thunderbird AIM/MSN/IRC -> GAIM MS Offfice -> Open Office.org (yeah, I know ms office is better, but all versions after office 2000 just aren't worth the upgrade) WMP -> Media Player Classic, older WMP (yeah, there not open source, but it proves that their are alternatives) My favorite game (gta: san andreas) theoretically had no win98se support, but it ran fine after a few modifications. Basically, I just don't care... the only time I have ever used MS tech support was to validate windows xp... guess what? I don't gotta validate win98se!! YIPEE!! now i don't need ms anymore... and as for all the apps that have no 98se support, i'll just find an alternative, i don't really care about the mainstream product. And Link 21, you're GETTING your wish, if you were the least bit observant you would notice an increasing trend in the lack of support for any os other than 2000/XP over the past 2-3 years. The OS's are getting phased out... have some god **** patience.
