  1. solved the outlook express problem. reassociated htm and html files with ie and also ticked "check if ie is default browser" in ie6 options

    my specific problem with ie6 is this;

    i download using newsgroups. i use www.newzbin.com to give me an nzb file but i have always just selected open before and it loads into grabit. now i have to save it and then run the nzb file to get grabit to batch the file.

  2. i tried firefox and opera recently. didnt like them so uninstalled and went back to IE6. this may contribute to my problem as outlined below.

    since then i have noticed that i cannot lauch a webpage link from within an email and i noticed that when i try to open or run a download from ie6 as opposed to "save to location" first then an error occurs as though the temporary internet files folder is missing or has a problem.

    to try and correct

    I have right clicked on the ie.enf in windows\inf and selected install

    i have closed ZAP and symantecAV

    I have used purgeIE

    I have moved location of temp internet files within tools>options of IE6

    Any help appreciated.

    kazaa.reg consists of the exported HKCU/software/kazaa and HKLM/software/kazaa registry files from your current installation

  5. i have ran a quick search and cant find any info if this has been discussed before.

    my install disk currently formats the main disk automatically and it occurred to me it would be handy if rather than formatting the disk it deleted all files except the c:\docs and settings\(user accounts) so that the bookmarks, desktop icons, address book, outlook express messages etc could be easily imported back into the new user account.

    any ideas how to implement this?

  6. i think what Xous is asking .....

    can he export registry settings from a pc with offfice already installed onto his new unattended winxp installation and also copy over the office directory from c:\program files\microsoft office and probably the start menu grouping so that he doesnt need to install office the conventional unattended way.

    i dont know the answer but would be interested if registry keys would work

  7. 2.2 is not a necessary upgrade for me so i stick to 2.1 and use a decent password.

    for radmin 2.1 to just act as a server (as I dont need the viewer capabilities on the pc's I install to) I have a self extracting winrar archive containing r_server.exe, admdll.dll, raddrv.dll and the script

    ;The comment below contains SFX script commands

    Path=c:\windows\system32

    SavePath

    Setup=r_server.exe /install /silence

    Silent=1

    and a radmin.reg file containing data from these two keys

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RAdmin\v1.01\ViewType]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\RAdmin\v2.0\Server\Parameters]

    and this in my runonce

    REG ADD %KEY%\012 /VE /D "Radmin 2.1" /f

    REG ADD %KEY%\012 /V 1 /D "%systemdrive%\install\radmin.exe" /f

    REG ADD %KEY%\012 /V 2 /D "REGEDIT /S %systemdrive%\install\radmin.reg" /f

    it should work as it does with mine.

    sygaterules are the dat and sys files from

  10. hacking out spyware using a removal software like adaware can sometimes leave unwanted registry entries that can slow down on logging in.

    try creating a new user and see if that logs in slow

    if the new account is quick to log in then create all new accounts and delete the old ones remembering to copy over favourites, my docs etc before deleting.

  11. At last a thread I can offer expert advice on and give something back to MSFN instead of asking questions all the time.

    THIS IS AIMED AT UK READERS WANTING A GREAT SPEC SELF BUILD PC FOR £400

    I am a system builder who builds around 5 PC's a week of varying specs. Here is my shopping list for a typical PC from my chosen UK supplier at the minute. If you buy these components they will work together flawlessly and be very easy to build. You will also have a great looking PC. The case and motherboard is known as an XPC shuttle system and is pre assembled. The instructions are excellent for a first time builder. It utilises an nforce2 based motherboard so requires a great value athlon barton chip.

    The supplier is www.aria.co.uk and you may be able to find these components slightly cheaper elsewhere but I have a trade account so this is as cheap as anyone for me. Aria have the best customer service of all the PC-etailors and the delivery is usually next day.

    Order these components to get a very decent PC. The nvidia fx5200 gaming card is ample for almost all of todays games. The hard disk although a little noisy is very fast. The black floppy and cdrewriter offset the silver fascia of the case nicely. The modem may not be necessary for everyone. This athlon barton chip can be easily overclocked to the same spec as an xp3200+ chip for more experienced builders using this setup.

    Shuttle SN45G Barebones System £107.00

    AMD AthlonXP 2500 [1.83GHZ 333] OEM £53.00

    nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB DDR £42.00

    120GB Maxtor D/Max ATA133/7200 8MB £54.00

    56K Internal PCI Modem (Ambient) £7.50

    3½" Black Floppy Drive £9.00

    Samsung 52x52x24 CDRW Black £22.00

    Now for the most important part of building systems. Use quality branded memory. I always buy my memory from www.crucial.com/uk and you want 2 sticks of this Crucial Memory giving a total of 512meg which is ample for most users with XP. Always buy two sticks with nforce2 motherboards such as this to optimise memory speed.

    This PC will be fine for your average user and post here is you want any advice or upgrades to this. As a rule I don't use pentium4 chips as the price vs performance ratio of overclocked Barton xp2500+'s is unbeatable.
