  1. Just an update ... A few more updates than on the first post in this thread. Still the same problem with Windows Search, and it's subsequent update: "WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-enu.exe /Quiet /NoRestart" "WindowsServer2003.WindowsXP-KB963093-x86-ENU.exe /Quiet /NoRestart" Also WGA (KB905474) seems to now require interactive installation. After install, only KB940157 and KB905474 are listed as needed by Windows Update. note, though probably metioned elsewhere: Hotfixes have changed their numbering scheme, now consisting of KB followed by seven digits, starting with 2. 4. Typo indeed. TermService was intended. In any event the NET STOP/START commands are invalid for this service, even on an up and running XP. Obviously, i would prefer not to start a bunch of services. I was hoping for a little registry entry that either instructed the program to install anyway, or fooled it into thinking all the prerequisites had been met. Installing after the final reboot is a valid solution, but right now my efforts are concentrated on doing it from SVCPACK.INF. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Due to this, when checking Windows Update, one optional update (Windows Search 4.0) is available. I also noticed another downside to installing IE7 from SVCPACK.INF, that subsequent updates fail (some of you reported related errors above). After an up and running version of XP installed this way needs to update IE7, the update will fail. This is due to the fact that dllcache contains files from IE6, and not the updated IE7. You can either delete the offending files (no, I do not have a list), or replace them with the IE7 versions. Also, a re-installation of IE7 corrects the problem. Using this SVCPACK.INF, and the associated executable files, there should be no need to use a third party XP Installation software. I can only believe that if you cannot, it must be a case of operator error. If you run into errors, insure that you have a clean XP installation source, preferably from a CD, with a properly integrated SP3, and nothing more. Then update the SVCPACK.INF file, and add the i386\svcpack directory and files. Then run a normal attended install. 6. I am trying to install Windows Search (WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-ENU.exe) from SVCPACK.INF during Windows XP SP3 installation. The unattended command line, WindowsSearch-KB940157-XP-x86-ENU.exe /Q /NoRestart, works fine in an up and running XP installation. From SVCPACK.INF, the command silently fails: no error message and Windows Search NOT installed. The log file, KB940157, reads as such: 00:00.000: ======================================================================= 00:00.070: INFO: Opening log for preliminary WDSSetup.exe actions 00:00.070: Started: 2008/10/14 (Y/M/D) 01:00:00.000 (local) 00:00.080: Command line: /Q /NoRestart 00:00.090: INFO: Closing down log for WDSSetup.exe logging When run from SVCPACK.INF with no installation switches, in order to elicit an attended install of Windows Search during XP installation, an error message box appears with the text "Setup has failed. Make sure Terminal Services are enabled before re-running setup." Indeed, Terminal Services is not yet started, and the installation fails, by design. My question is, has anybody succesfully installed Windows Search during XP installation, preferably using SVCPACK.INF? Or does anyone have any suggestions how to either start the service (No, NET START TERMSERVICES does not work ...), or fool WDSSetup.exe into installing anyway?
  7. In the never ending search for the complete, up to date Windows XP Installation, here is my latest SVCPACK.INF, used to install all the updates and hotfixes for Windows XP Service Pack 3. This list of updates and hotfixes are those I have determined to be necessary to show Zero Updates needed, High Priority or Recommended, in Windows Update. One major obstacle is finding the hotfixes. I use a combination of standard hotfix downloads from Microsoft, inspection of WindowsUpdate.log for update URLs, and NirSoft's SmartSniff to detect from where the hotfixes are downloaded. Please do the same to find your own hotfixes, and do not bother asking me for direct download links ... Two problems discussed here and on other forums is how to install the .Net Frameworks (1.1 and 2.0), and the IE7 Updates from SVCPACK.INF. This is the only part of the installation that requires "smoke and mirrors". For .Net, the file REG.EXE is extracted from the Windows source, and included in the SVCPACK folder. From there it is used to change two entries in the Windows registry to allow the installation of .Net 2.0. The .Net installers for .Net 1.1 and 2.0 have been renamed to DOTNET11 and DOTNET20, respectively. Oddly enough, .Net 3.0 and 3.5 do NOT show up as needed on Windows Update, but I suspect that will soon change. The second problem was to allow the updates to IE7 to succeed. This was achieved by using REG.EXE again to add an entry into the registry to allow the update to run as if a Windows Update installation of IE7 was being performed. After the update is installed, the registry setting is deleted. 8. @Bitfrotter: Correct me if I am wrong, but your posts have led me to believe you are using XPCREATE in a commercial environment. Is that correct? I will not be updating this SVCPACK.INF any longer, as I have moved on to SP3.
  9. @giarc: Yes, this works on an attended install, as well as an unattended. You have the wrong switches, or the wrong update file for the hotfix that is prompting you for an extraction path. You could try a quiet installation, as opposed to an unattended installation, and then you should have more luck finding the culprit. To do so, change all the /Q /U /O /N /Z to /U /O /N /Z, and the /Q:A /R:N to /Q:U /R:N. Integration using the /integrate switch will result in a larger installation source, as the updates are still run as shown above, but unpacked files will then replace packed files in the i386 directory of the installation source. The hotfixes are already compressed as distributed. Using makecab will not result in significant savings, just as compressing an .mp3 file does not reduce the files size very much.
  10. I WAS missing something ... seems I skipped right over that response that said what I said. Must have come out of hibernation too early ...
  11. Personally ... I like the simple approach. "I would like to check in a cmd if a file was deleted or not ". I read that to mean that if it still exists, it was not deleted, no? Am I missing something here?
  12. @smilodn: This list is for XP Pro. Forgot to mention that ... @Yzöwl: I suspect that the SVC-IEU (IE Updates) files that did not install are due to not including the IE7 iexplore.ex_ in your I386 installation directory. WIthout this, the IE Updates will think that IE6 is installed, and not install. That is one of the "smoke and mirror" tricks I needed to use. @spitf1f3: Perhaps it will work for both Home and Pro: I never use nor test the Home version. It takes quite a while to install this way, but most of the time is for .Net, which is unavoidable unless you find a method to slipstream .Net (which I would neither trust nor try, but to each their own ...). To me the extra time is worth it, as I an sure to have a reliable installation, and save the time hunting down bugs left behind by non-orthodox "shortcuts". If I am really in a hurry to get an installation done, which I never seem to be ... I just start it a half hour earlier! @Neo - Matrix: I have not tried other languages, but I assume most, if not all, of the files will install fine. I also have not tested RunOnceEx, but as the latest IE updates are installed, I would bet it works. If not, there is always the option to adjust the RunOnceEx flags so that no status boxes are shown, and that has been documented to work by both Microsoft, and others on this board. As for the three updates you cannot find (ROOTSUPD.EXE, WIC_X86_ENU.EXE and XPSEPSC-X86-EN-US.EXE), I do not remember where I got them, and I am not in my lab (nor will I be for at least another month), but I do know that all the files listed are downloadable as such: no extraction is required, I do not know how English .Net would work on PT-BR Windows. You will just have to test it ... SP3, as I last saw it, does NOT include IE7. @DarkShadows: I did my tests with .Net 3.0 + updates. Yzöwl, I believe, from what he posts here, did use the 3.5 package. As I mention in the first post, the WebClient service appears to work just fine, though I have not tested it, as such. But in many tests, the service was perpetually in the "Starting" state. With the SVCPACK.INF file posted that was NOT the case, which was conclusive enough for me. Also, as I stated, and you repeated, the order DOES seem to be the key. The same files in different orders tested had the WebClient service listed as "Starting". So now, "To the best of your knowledge", there is a way to install .Net 3,0 (and perhaps 3.5, I cannot vouch for that), from SVCPACK.INF WITHOUT breaking the WebClient Service (which was the main reason I posted this). I also see that you have been busy writing up a few guides. Keep up the good work! They look clear and easy to follow. As for me, I left home for a 2 week trip about a month ago, and it looks to be another month before I return. At that point, I will try to update my SVCPACK.INF to include .Net 3.5, and the latest updates. Until then: Good Luck!
  13. Yes, I do have it ... And you can find it, too! I assume you already looked in C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log. If you do not find it there, go to NirSoft (www.nirsoft.net), and download SmartSniff. Start SmartSniff, and let Windows Update download the file(s) in question. Now, examine the streams tracked by SmartSniff, and you will find the link(s)!

  15. Aha! I have aroused, or perhaps arisen, the interest of he whose batch skills are rivaled only by ... my own! The short answers: HMTCDWIZARD appears to be unnecessary. I did not realize WMP11 rendered it so. SCRIPTEN.EXE can replace WINDOWSXP-KB917344-X86-ENU.EXE, however my objective here was to find the "minimal" list of updates needed for an "up to date" install, as determined by Windows Update. Additionally, in my tests, SCRIPTEN.EXE generates a non-critical digital signature error in setuperr.log when slipstreamed. No, WINDOWSXP-KB938127-X86-ENU.EXE and IE7-WindowsXP-KB938127-x86-ENU.exe are not the same. The former is for IE6, the later for IE7. I suspect you knew that … WINDOWSXP-KB939653-X86-ENU.EXE was supposed to be WindowsXP-KB942615-x86-ENU.exe: I missed that update: it does not show up on Windows Update, as IE7 is installed by that point. I have not yet tried .Net 3.5, but I suspect I shall be forced to (by Windows Update) soon. Neither DIRIDs, nor %SYSTEMROOT%SYSTEM32, seem to work. The reason for both the IE6 and IE7 updates is that I use XPCREATE to slipstream the updates, and I want the IE6 version of the source files patched even though they will be outdated before setup is finished. IE6 updates are slipstreamed, IE7 is installed at T-13. If not slipstreaming the IE6 updates, including them in SVCPACK.INF would, indeed, be superfluous. After I create a successful slipstreamed CD, I then use the same SVCPACK.INF and SVCPACK directory with a non-slipstreamed XP source (other than the IEXPLORE.EXE file, listed above). The SVCPACK.INF above has been updated to reflect the points mentioned here. Additionally, I neglected to mention that the .Net installers, 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0, were renamed to DOTNET11, DOTNET20 and DOTNET30, respectively.
  16. In the never ending search for the complete, up to date Windows XP Installation, here is my latest SVCPACK.INF, used to install all the updates and hotfixes for Windows XP Service Pack 2. This list of updates and hotfixes are those I have determined to be neccessary to show Zero Updates needed, High Priority or Recommended, in Wiindows Update. One major obstacle is finding the hotfixes. I use a combination of standard hotfix downloads from Microsoft, inspection of WindowsUpdate.log for update URLs, and NirSoft's Port Sniffer to detect from where the hotfixes are downloaded. Please do the same to find your own hotfixes, and do not bother asking me for direct download links ... Two problems discussed here and on other forums is how to install the .Net Frameworks (1.1, 2.0 and 3.0), and the IE7 Updates from SVCPACK.INF. This is the only part of the installation that requires "smoke and mirrors". For .Net, the file REG.EXE is extracted from the Windows source, and included in the SVCPACK folder From there it is used to change two entries in the Windows registry to allow the installation of .Net 2.0 and .Net 3.0. The order of installation of these components is also of critical importance. The order shown here was found by trial and error, as was the need for certain "helper" installations, like MSXML6-KB933579-ENU-X86.EXE and XPSEPSC-X86-EN-US.EXE and WIC_X86_ENU.EXE. For those of you wondering, the WebClient Service does not appear to be broken with this order. As I do not use it, I have not tested it as such, but it does show as Started in the Services MMC. This was NOT the case with certain other tested installation orders, where it was always in the "Starting" state. The second problem was to allow the udates to IE7 to succeed. This was achieved by extracting the IEXPLORE.EXE file from the IE7 installation package, compressing it to IEXPLORE.EX_, and replacing the IEXPLORE.EX_ file in the Windows source with the newer version. In addition to these changes, the directory i386\svcpack was created, and all files listed in the SVCPACK.INF file were included here. SVCPACK.INF was compressed to SVCPACK.IN_, and added to the i386 directory. Also the .Net installers for .Net 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 have been renamed to DOTNET11, DOTNET20, DOTNET30, respectivly. On the downside ... the installation source is over 900 megabytes ... Fortunatly, SP3 is just around the corner ... 17. That IE7 re-issue does not include any hotfixes, but does allow for installtion of IE7 prior to activation, which means that it can be installed via SVCPACK.INF on retail and OEM versions. Previously a VLK or Royalty OEM version was required.
  18. Yes, the list only includes the MSXML 6 Update, but I do believe that it installs all of MSXML 6. There are no updates for the other MSXML versions listed, simply because Windows Update did not list any. Yes, there is now an SVC-X2I folder. The SVC-X2M folder still works, but the MSI wrapper is different in the SVC-X2I folder. My XPCREATION was nearly 900 Mbytes, but I removed nothing from the source, nor the hotfix list. A good part of that is due to the various .NET versions. I do not know which updates can be excluded, as I have not tested all combinations. My objective is to create an XP installation that lists zero updates, "Recommended" or "Optional" in Windows Update, and this is the list I came up with. If you find that a hotfix can be removed from the list, and Windows Update does not complain, please let me know. Since my last post, Microsoft has released a new standalone version of the Windows Update Agent, as well as a re-issue of Internet Explorer 7. The new version of IE7 allows for installtion during setup on non-activated systems. These avoids the need to install IE7 later on non-VLK/Royalty OEM versions. Those of you that requested to test this version have been PMed the download link.
  19. Thanks, gosh! For those of oyu that requested the download ink, that has been sent. Please post your findings in the XPCREATE forum.
  20. Though I have been admittedly neglecting XPCREATE in order to focus on other areas of life (Go Sox!), I have released a new version. If you are an experienced XPCREATE user, and interested in testing this version, please check out THIS POST in the XPCREATE Forum. The new version creates an unattended installation DVD that does not require any updates, as listed on Windows Update, including IE7, WMP11, .NET2, .NET3 and more!
  21. XPCREATE has been updated to handle the latest hotfixes, and create a Windows Installation Disk the lists no High Priority or Recommended Updates upon first boot. This version is still in the test phase, and currently I have only tested with Windows XP. The vast majority of the various types of hotfixes and updates (93 of 116) are slipstreamed into the source. The remainder are installed at the T-13 point in the installation, via the SVCPACK.INF installation file. The files that are not actually slipstreamed include: Windows Media Player 11 and Updates Internet Explorer 7 and Updates .Net Versions 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 Digital Rights Management Windows Update Agent While most of these updates install or slipstream in the standard fashion used in previous versions of XPCREATE, there are a few significant exceptions: Windows Media Player 11: The various installation files have been extracted from the original distribution file, in order to install without the uninstall option. Internet Explorer 7: In order to install the updates during the Windows Installation process, the main Internet Explorer file, IEXPLORE.EXE, has been slipstreamed into the Windows source. .NET 2.0 / 3.0: Two registry edits, as noted in Aaron Stebner’s Blog, are made to allow the installation to succeed My tests have all been performed using an MSDN Windows Volume License Key (VLK) version of Windows XP, and Royalty OEM Versions (i.e. Dell, HP, etc.). These versions do not require activation. This is of significance for installing Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. In retail versions of Windows, it may not be possible to install these Windows Components during Windows installation, as Windows Genuine Authentication, thus Windows activation, may be required. The most difficult challenge in preparing this version of XPCREATE was installing .Net Version 3.0, without breaking the WebClient Service. For reasons unbeknownst to me, the key seems to be in the order of which different updates are installed, some of which would appear to have no relation to either .Net or the WebClient service. I cannot explain the why or wherefore of this, but after burning and installing an embarrassing number of installation DVDs, I came upon an installation order that works. The resulting Windows Installation DVD does cause a few errors to appear in the Windows Event Log Viewer. In the System Log, there is a reported error for the installation of the Shockwave Flash Internet Explorer plug-in. I believe this to be a “false” alert, as Shockwave is installed and working. Both .Net 2.0 and .Net 3.0 result in 2 errors in the Application Log. These errors are better explained on Aaron Stebner’s Blog. Both version of .Net do install and function. Finally, the Windows Installation Source produced is close to 900 Mbytes in size. Even removing many of the “unneeded” files results in a source over 700 Mbytes, thus too big to fit on a CD. Until Windows XP Service Pack 3 is released, I will not be attempting to “slim” this down to CD size. The XPCREATE Web Site has been updated to list the hotfixes needed for Windows XP. This version is still in the test phase. If you are an experienced user of XPCREATE, and if you are interested in testing, and have access to a VLK or Royalty OEM version of Windows XP to test, please send me a PM, and I will send you a link to the test version of XPCREATE. Once I have enough testers, I will remove the downloadable test version, until I am satisfied with the results and the (possible) corrections.
  22. WOW! Looks like another case of the squeaky hinge getting the oil! XPCREATE itself has hardly moved for a long time. The code does just what it was designed to do, and the hotfix layout has not warranted any new design. I am currently looking into 2 minor annoyances (IE7 patches, and .NET 3), and will keep you all posted with what I find out. Thanks for your reactivity, MartinL, and getting the forums back up. I really wanted to see the hotstream project as well!
