Don't get me wrong, ponghy, I am still looking for the answer like you! That thread DOES tell how to programatically untick the boxes, but you need the EXE (elattrib?), as well as some DLLs, so I suspect the call would be difficult in unattended setup. It is further complicated by the fact that as shareware, there must be some controls for registered version. But I admit ... I have not tried it ... Anyone else ?

Thanks. That, again, is about the indexing service, the question here is how to change the file attributes, which are stored in the file system, but not the registry. But it is a start!

I, too, am interested in a solution. What we need is a ATTRIB type command that includes indexing. There is something similar posted at http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=26587 , but that is not freeware, and I am unsure how it would work in an Unattended Installation. If you, or anyone, has, or finds, more to offer on the thought ... please post!

My first answer would be "Baby Steps". Try XPCREATE to simply create a bootable CD first, with no hotfixes, themes, SATA drivers or what not. Get some hands on experience, and then shoot for that "perfect" CD you seem to be looking for. The Web Site, as is, has been enough to get many, many people started. When you have a specific problem - e.g. something in your tests is not working - post a message, and I suspect there will be answers. Good Luck, and Welcome to MSFN!

In truth, I kind of like scaring away the faint of heart: makes for much easier maintenance!

The reason it is not done by the "installer" is that XPCREATE did not have an installer: it was just a few files to add to a directory. The installer (which is, naturally, just an IExpress package) came about as a means to throw the EULA in the User's view, as it was, and still is, so blatently ignored. But, now that you mention it, I could quite easily add a post install command to do the initialization. It even seems to make sense (though I am not sure how you came up with it at 4 in the morning: must be weak beer!). So, there is a good chance I will create a seperate initialization routine, and call it right after installation (a.k.a. extraction). Thanks for the input.

Thanks. No need for the CAB now, but after XPCREATE finishes, it does leave a LOGFILES.CAB file in the NEWFILES directory. That is simply XPCREATE.LOG compressed.

Long ago, I saw a post here that listed many applications that could be "installed" without installers. That is to say, simple copied to the desired location, and run from there. Could someone be so kind to point me in that direction?

True ... The Freeware version does not download hotfixes. I plan to get around to a Web Site Update in mid September.

Beats me ... but I will say that I do not test XPCREATE with other products. I would not be surprised either way: if it works or does not work. Perhaps someone else has tested this more, and can help you better than I. Good Luck!

A glitch indeed ... It seems that DOPATH=YES is in XPCREATE.INI, but XPCREATE does not find any driver directories to add to the OEMPnPDriversPath line in WINNT.SIF. Should not effect the install, but it WILL be cleaned up in the next release. Thanks for pointing it out! Without meaning to nag ... please attach LOGFILES.CAB, not a RARed file, as I can always open CABs, but am not always on a box that has an RAR extractor.

Use it or not, whatever floats your boat, but I wonder why those not interested in using it hang around reading the posts ?

Hey mdes! Yes, it seems that some Anti Virus Software does cuase this type of problem. If you are using AV Software, I would suggest turning it off while running XPCREATE. It will also speed up the XPCREATE process.

Right ... I meant XP Home. Still, odd that it should be so much trouble, as the differences from XP Pro are not that great.

@BaTLeZone: Sounds odd that there should be so much trouble for Windows 2000. I will not be able to look into it until some time in September, but I am guessing that it is something simple that craps out early on. Perhaps I have trouble with a hotfix or rollup. @Bitfrotter: Thanks for pointing out the typos. As you may have guessed, those lists are generated, not hand typed. I'll have to look into the generator. In any event, the lists themselves seem to be accurate, even if the links are not.

OK ... Current thinking is to initialize the XPCREATE Environment if XPCREATE.INI does not exist (it is also created upon first run), and then exit out with a message that initialization has completed. Might have to wait a week or two, though ... I am on the road at the moment. Still no plans concerning the automatic download, but I will keep you posted.

My suggestion ... First, create an XPCREATE CD without the SATA drivers, and add the SATA drivers manually with the F2 (I think it is F2) button during setup. If that works, and we have thus validated the drivers themselves, then try again, adding the SATA drivers as outlined on the XPCREATE Web Site. If the BSOD appears, report the error here, including an upload of LOGFILES.CAB, and I will see if there is something I can find wrong. Not having the hardware, it is difficult to test the SATA configurations. I just integrate the drivers as per Microsoft's recommendations, and it is certainly possible that some just will not work this way.

Silly me ... I did not update the ReadMe file. I am not yet sure how I will resolve that, but for the moment, yes, you do need to manually create the directories you will need (SVC-* and SPACKS). What is the general consensus? Should I create the directories on first run if they do not exist, and quit? Shuold I check of the directories exist, or check if XPCREATE.INI exists? Any thoughts?
