  1. My computer was infected last year with this specific virus because I ran peer to peer application without an antivirus, I learned my lesson :)

My personal analysis with this virus is:

    • it infects ALL executables (exe, com, dll, ocx, etc) on ALL drives
    • after initial infection, it downloads its main program from total-secure2009.com

    What I did was:

    1. deleted ALL executables on ALL drives (I was left with only image files (jpg, bmp, etc) docs (doc, xls, mdb, pub), and mp3s :( :angrym:)
    2. install from uninfected CD installer
    3. and placed this on my HOSTS file "127.0.0.1 total-secure2009.com", this prevented accidental infection again in which I did, really, this time it tried to download from total-secure2009.com but now can't download its main prog from there

  2. I like all the underlying improvements in Win7/Vista but absolutely hate the UI, Explorer and the Search functions in these new versions. Years ago Windows was all about functionality and productivity, now it's trying its best to be a MultiMedia only operation system. The lack of a classic start menu, and the removal of the excellent basic search functionality (that doesn't require an index service) that existed in 98/2000/XP/2003 is inexcusable in my opinion. Productive professional-level file manipulation in the new Explorer is **** near impossible.

Me too, I also miss the old explorer and the classic search on Win7/Vista :( It is more productive working with the old search and explorer.

  3. You cant...

I have been infected two times for the past years, first was when I was infected through peer to peer, it was a tough virus because it infected every .exe and .com file in every partition or drive in my computer. All I was left was my jpgs and mp3s + full format and install, no antivirus there.

The second time was just last March, the virus installed itself on other drive (in my case it was drive E:) and it made detection more difficult because I just scan system drive.

Because of the above-mentioned, today, I do not go online without firewall, activeX control (spywarebalster) and antivirus...

  4. can you tell me please where I can download and install NetMon
Go to Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs => Add/Remove Windows Components, under the components Management and Monitoring Tools, click Details and there it is, check the box Network Monitoring Tools then click OK to install.
  5. I have been using 2003 since it came out up to this time and it is much better than XP in most ways except, finding an antivirus for it.

Most antivirus that we're comfortable with does not install on Server OS. There are ways around this though and in my opinion, that is the "not better" part of using 2003 as desktop.

  6. Maybe they did something to it to prevent it from running games. After all, it's meant to be a server OS, and most datacenter servers aren't running games. ;)

Just ENABLE video and sound hardware acceleration, DirectX's DirectDraw, Direct3D, etc. and your games are good to go.

do u have the graphics acceleration turned up to full. right click desktop>properties then settings tab advanced>troubleshoot. if hardware acceleration not turned up then no games will run.

Include sound hardware acceleration, Run =>dxdiag go to Display and Sound tabs, enable all accelerations.

I'm using Win2003 Enterprise SP2 and I am playing Civilization III & IV, Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Sims, Grand Theft Auto, Windows Solitaire, Winmine, etc. Nintendo emulator ZSNES, etc... etc.

  7. mau-yong how do i enable the built in firewall...

In the Control Panel, go to Windows Firewall then just click ON then OK.

...or Start => Run => services.msc, go to the process Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) configure Startup Type =>Automatic and Start the process.

I am not sure but I think you should have at least Service Pack 1 installed for the Win Firewall to work, but it would be best if you install SP2.
