Vista Pricing Revealed
Online retailer Amazon.com has begun taking preorders for various
Windows Vista versions, which will be available January 30, 2007,
according to Amazon.com. Not surprisingly, the prices that Amazon.com
lists for Vista are quite similar to the roughly equivalent Windows XP
versions.
According to Amazon.com, the prices for Vista are as follows:
Vista Home Basic: $199.00
Vista Home Basic Upgrade: $99.95
Vista Home Basic Upgrade (Additional License Only): $89.95
Vista Home Premium: $239.00
Vista Home Premium Upgrade: $159.00

Although not every Vista version correlates exactly with an XP
version, the pricing is in line with XP pricing. For example, XP Home
costs $189.00, compared with $199.99 for Vista Home Basic, and the XP
Home Upgrade costs $89.97, only two cents more than the Vista Home
Basic Upgrade. Upsells won't be particularly expensive either: Prices
for the much more capable Vista Home Premium are just $40 to $60
higher than those of Vista Home Basic.
Amazon.com doesn't yet show the box art that Microsoft will use for
its Vista retail versions. Earlier this week, Microsoft Canada also
slipped with a bit of Vista pricing information: The company's Web
site briefly reported that Vista Ultimate would cost $450 in Canadian
dollars.

I use AVG Free, it also checks my email in/out, and now they must have decided to let it update at a set time. If I remember, in the past, only the paid version allowed this.
Also, the only adware/spyware program I use, besides Windows Defender is Ewido. And now GRISOFT has purchased Ewido anti-spyware and issued a NEW VERSION 4 with a completely changed GUI. It's great. Full product turns into a free scanner after a trial run. You can use it for free then, but you may have to get updates yourself.
I liked it from a long time ago, as it was the only program to dig stuff out of System Restore.
If you like to pay for the full programs, you can now get 1. antivirus 2. anti-spyware and 3. a firewall all at the same place. GRISOFT has got the trifecta.

I will get Vista as I am older and do not have as much time as you! Was expecting to have to:
- Buy Vista
- Buy Graphics card - with Pixel Shader 2
- Buy additional 1 Gig Ram (Have 1 Gig so this may not be needed)
The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor also says my BigPond Wireless Modem is not supported at present..

I have an Acer Extensa Notebook. Just wanted a Notebook for a change with it's low power requirements and quiet operation and limited wires. However I knew I would be in BIG TROUBLE if it ever stopped working.
It stopped working after a year and two months. It's laying on it's back on my other desk.
Anyway it was pre-activated I think, as when I purchased it all I had to do was type in my user name in front of the salesperson.
Problem is, if you wish to install Windows (and the additional software comes too..) again, you have to install and wipe your previous installations. Including any Windows updates, etc.
The only way to get the WindowsXP disk (that you have to activate) is to buy from an independent OEM. And not too many of those make Notebooks/Laptops.

Can you right click on a toolbar button and then click "Customize..".? And then add the 'Folder Options' button to the toolbar?
Although the button code is probably reused from the 'Tools' menu.. And if 'Group policy' is set ..

I used to use an intake pipe on mine too, although it was a little more ghetto (old peanut can ). A while ago I got fed up with the noise and ripped everything out, mounted it on a board and stuck it up on a beam in the basement. I converted my DVDRW to a USB unit and routed all my cables through the floor. Now it's in the cool basement and I hear nothing but silence.
I like that.. It's seriously more weird than I am..
No, I like taxying down the runway in my 747. Maybe I can watch the inflight movie. If I could hear it. I always wanted to watch movies on a little screen and in an uncomfortable office chair. Must get VISTA with the built in Media Center.

What is an OTES RAMflow? Some double fan cooler for the CPU. Why is it called RAMflow?
Did you get the plastic exhaust pipe you see on my case? Does everyone?
I had such a heck of a job to get the OEM to leave out the floppy, (at my expense) broke his heart. Could not bring myself to say ditch the 56K modem as well.
The case is designed with the floppy slot, but I just consider it an extra cooling slot!
Will we ever be able to move into the future now .. and let go of the past 56K and 3 1/2" 1.44Mb? Not really, everyone will come back and swear they use these things every day and cannot live without them. Bit like Microsoft will not let go of paint - when they could have gotten us an OLD PhotoImpact, say 5 or 6 plus a vector with Xara Xtreme.

Well, it's the razzmatazz plus security that we home users want. Except Media Center.
But you can stick your little games, except CHESS looks like it might be OK. But who has time. And to Microsoft directly, or in particular the psychiatrists who treat the designers of the Windows GUI, women don't like crawly things - get that game out-of-there.
I don't like them either, even though I am only woman in phoney photo, to exemplify all is not as it seems on the Net.

Going back to the past, I used to use a FREE version of Norton. It wasn't well known but they had a free version for download. Then I used InoculateIt which was a free version of some Aust . product I think. They scraped the free version, so I switched to AVG.
I am happy with AVG + email scanner in/out and now auto updates in the FREE version. But I am hearing good things about NOD32 and somewhere that MS use it on their campus.
I do not believe that you should have to pay to protect the operating system; that's a defect; no matter that some third party is attacking your business - you should protect your users free.
So, Microsoft, buy NOD32 and give it to me free with Vista. And pigs might fly again!

What´s the deal here? Yes it´s a computer, yes you can write your own OS for it, yes it´s better then your computer at home b/c it has better specs, and NO, even the XBox360 doesn´t have HD-TV support (100%) but I´m sure you can do more with a normal computer a.k. 2006.
So, start to rebuild the XBox to the computer you like and tell us about it please

I'm not in any rush to upgrade to Vista, even though my machine is still top of the line.
You have a top of the line machine to run it with new graphics drivers. You are overkill on XP, your machine is licking it's lips for VISTA
I share Tarun's opinion. My machines are up to the job (except one old box I run Linux), still, I will not be upgrading to Vista as soon as it comes out.I will definatly try it, however, it will be on a test machine. My main computers will all run XP (until 2008 at least).
If you are definitely going to try it, won't you have to BUY it?
Why can't M$ stick with plain flat rectangular windows that don't require much processing power to use?If you turn off the AERO GUI then I believe that's what you're left with.
It may even be that the AERO GUI can be left out of the build, like a component in WinXP today, and not even be present on the HD, by the time Vista goes gold.

In the beginning, RISC design was actually not meant for high performance. Engineers figured that a CPU with fewer and simpler instructions design could be fabricated at a lower cost than one with a more complicated instruction set. A simpler design also means that clock frequencies could be raised above those of CISC chips, since clock propagation delays would be reduced and more manageable. This raised clock frequency would then compensate for one of the main flaws of RISC design - their inferior instruction density compared to CISCs. However, in reality RISC chips aren't clocked as high as they should theoretically be, so their performance isn't as good as expected. The PowerPC cores are good, but running at the same speed as an equivalent late-model CISC x86 like AMD, the CISC will provide higher performance.

The system regulates the temperature of the cores and adjusts the flow of liquid and fan speed accordingly.It's just a heatpipe and a regulated fan. Nothing special about that.
Is that a hollow heatpipe vacuum-sealed, liquid-cooled? Or just a lump of copper?

At 19.2 Ghz - with the addition of 8 Mb of Ram and a 250 Mb Hard Disk. (1 Gb for each core and 2 Gb for the swap file. And I know 250 Mb is not available at 2.5" at present.)

No, everyone here is going to buy it. Why?
Because we are all interested in computers. There are the majority however, that are not all that interested. Maybe email and some Web browsing, and only ever using the programs that come with the computer.Those PC specs are the same as my PC, with the exception of the graphics. Mine is integrated 64 Meg max. But I was expecting not only to have to buy Vista but a new graphics card and additional 1 Gig of ram.
Also, it looks like I will have to buy the Home Premium or something to get the AERO GUI. That gets me Media Center too, which I do not particularly want.

I admit I smoke. I'm old and the terrible effects were not known when I was young. Saying this because I went to buy a
tobacco pouch at 'Men's Biz' and it was plastic with a plastic lining and named a 'tobacco pouch'. It was $40.00. So I

It's either ON or OFF. 0 or 1. That's all a transistor can do - switch on or off. But they're got a 165-million transistor, multi-core processor running three 3.2-GHz PowerPC cores. So you can turn on and off in a lot of combinations!

Other hardware isn’t special at all in the Xbox 360, believe me ..."not needed for the job at hand (for instance, if you were using the Xbox 360 to watch a DVD), then the unused cores are automatically turned off.
To COOL 19.2 Ghz. What do you have? Your 3.2 Ghz immersed in vegetable oil. Or a huge leaf blower - that sounds like you're taxying down a runway?

Because the RAM is only half-cocked, while the cache is fully-cocked. But actually it is RAM-on-the-chip. Unbelievable.".... The GPU
Another powerful asset in the Xbox 360 is the Graphics Processor Unit (GPU). The Xbox 360 boasts the new, custom-built 500-MHz ATI Graphics Processor card with 10 MB of embedded DRAM. While the 500-MHZ graphics processor is powerful, and 10 MB of DRAM provides ample memory for the GPU to do its job, the most innovative thing about this card is that it is built on unified shader architecture.
Shaders are computer programs that determine the final look of what you see on the screen when you're looking at computer animation. Shaders take rendered 3-D objects that are built on polygons (the building blocks of 3-D animation) and make them look more realistic. There are two types of shaders: pixel shaders and vertex shaders.
Pixel shaders can be used to alter the lighting, color and surface of each pixel. This in turn affects the overall color, texture and shape of 3-D objects built from these pixels. Pixel shaders help to "smooth out" 3-D objects, giving them a more organic texture. To learn more about pixel shaders.
Vertex shaders work by manipulating an object's position in 3-D space. "Vertex" refers to the intersection of two coordinates in space. You would map the position of an animated object in 3-D space by giving it a value. These values are the x, y and z coordinates. By anipulating these variables, a vertex shader can create realistic animation and special effects such as "morphing." In real-time graphics, like the kind you see in video games, shaders work with the graphics processor. The shaders make billions of computations a second in order to perform their specific tasks. These computations are worked in steps over a series of computational components. Think of an assembly line. In the world of hardware, these assembly lines are called pipelines.
Traditionally, pixel shaders and vertex shaders have dedicated pipelines because each one has very specific and differing needs. As we learned before, the new ATI graphics card in the Xbox 360 has unified shader architecture. What that means is that now, both shader types share the same pipelines. ATI figured out a way at the hardware level to address the needs of both types of shaders using the same pipeline.
The apparent advantage of sharing pipelines is to add more assembly lines, making computation that much faster. ATI claims that this unified shader architecture allows for 48 billion shader operations per second. The Xbox 360 is the first device to use this type of architecture.
That's some serious s*** ...
Last, but not least, I don't have one. Can't get into games. There seems to be an age cut off where you cannot participate anymore.

Well it seems to me it just needs an operating system, graphic and sound apps written for it, etc, and it would blow Vista away with 3D and performance. And sound quality, WOW, plus high definition monitor performance. I would pay double the price if it was a normal PC! But remember, Vista has taken five years, and now delayed til Jan or Feb, 2007.
So how long would it take Microsoft to develop an OS for this ... be out of date ..

Microsoft has outfitted the 360 with a 165-million transistor, multi-core processor running three 3.2-GHz PowerPC cores. (Perhaps MS should be in the hardware business, oh, wait, they are - China mouse, China Keyboard.)
(A core is another name for a processor. Recently, hardware manufacturers have started combining several cores, or processors, onto one chip. This is a multi-core processor. Multi-core processors offer a combination of tremendous computing capabilities and efficient power consumption. They split heavy work loads over multiple powerful processors rather than giving all the work to one super-powerful processor.)
Microsoft devised a cooling system that combines a small, vacuum-sealed, liquid-cooled system with fans to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the 360. The system regulates the temperature of the cores and adjusts the flow of liquid and fan speed accordingly. Additionally, the cooling system monitors the core's workload: If one or more cores are not needed for the job at hand (for instance, if you were using the Xbox 360 to watch a DVD), then the unused cores are automatically turned off.

This Xbox thingy appears to only be 12 inches tall? Is that right. And you can change hard Disk from the outside (top of) box. Admittedly they are Notebook 2.5 inch disks that cost more.
All you need is an OS, rewritten Photoshop, Dreamweaver, IE, mail, burners and players, Firefoxes, etc. TASK IS TOO BIG TO CO-ORDINATE. MS cannot even co-ordinate Vista. The WHOLE software industry would have to write programs for a SUPER COMPUTER. Dream on ...

The Xbox 360 it is not a personal computer in the sense of PC as a productivity tool. However, its hardware capabilities and technical specifications make the Xbox 360 more powerful than any desktop computer available on the market at this time.

Along with seeing the final CPU, GPU, TV encoder, and Southbridge chips in the flesh, we were told how the CPU's three cores are capable of running at a whopping 3.2 GHz each -- each core supporting two threads making for a total of six threads running at any one time. The CPU is a custom-built IBM PowerPC-based chip. The GPU is also a powerhouse, and Holmdahl seemed confident that the graphical grunt of the 360 is around twice as powerful as the most powerful PC chipset architecture currently in circulation. With a clock speed of 500 MHz, the GPU (designed by ATI) is able to support up to 48 different pixel shaders (advanced shader language) at any one time, something which will allow developers and artists to use some truly gorgeous rendering and special effects in their games.
The CPU and GPU are linked together by a blisteringly fast data bus which can transfer operations at an incredible 5.4 Gb per second. Couple this together with the TV encoder chip (responsible for the various high-definition output modes that connect to HD-compatible displays) and the Southbridge chip which deals with a variety of functions like audio, and the core of the 360 shapes up to be incredibly efficient and extremely powerful. The bottom line? Games for the Xbox 360 have the potential to be very, very special. After all, the overall system floating-point performance of the machine is an astounding 1 TFLOP!

The Xbox 360, like all video game consoles, is just a computer with hardware and software dedicated to the function of running video game software. The original Xbox was in essence a Windows PC with a modified Pentium III processor, some relatively powerful graphics and audio hardware and a modified version of the Microsoft operating system Windows 2000, all packaged in that distinctive black box.

Yes. You see that "Packager :: JCXP.net". That's not Microsoft, and that data is a warez file. They use .nfo files for info.
JCXP.net do have the latest ver. of IE listed now - AND it links to MS downloads - the other version did not.
I too, download this version from a REPUTABLE site, think I got beta 1 through them. However this time it wasn't the official MS one. When that came out, I uninstalled this and went and got the official one from MS. Even though it was an OLDER build.

I voted for Firefox and hate Netscape but I'm talking about the very old Netscape. A picture I saw recently of the new version looks OK. You also did not say if it's IE6 or IE7 (beta1) or (beta2) or March, 20 REFRESH of IE you are listing.
I am mostly using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1 as my main browser because of the useful extensions I have. It's also tuned, and has site ads script blocker.
Just download and am using HERE NOW Internet Explorer 7.0.5335.5 (Beta 2) March 20, 2006 REFRESH.

The EDIT for the blog pops up a window and is perfect except, at the bottom there is NO 'cancel' and 'save & publish' BUTTONS. Very strange. And I can't get Mozzie to look at it because only I can be logged in.
