Okay... 1. The FE source helped none. Same error, different CAB file. 2. I copied OI*.DLL and OLEPRO32.DLL out of the source CABS to the install directory. Setup completes without one error. Conclusion? 98lite got something wrong in the process of tweaking Setup. My solution is a simple workaround, works well enough and uses a whole 'nother 100K or so. Oh well. Anyway, I'm still interested in knowing if there's a more official fix to this, if one of the setup's INF files can be altered to prevent the error... If not, at least this is here for future reference.

I'm having the same problem that kokiri was; just wondering if he ever found the fix. I have a 98SE source and 98lite Professional v4.7 made into a bootable ISO using MagicISO. I took a Windows Me boot floppy image and edited the startup scripts to make a menu prompting 1) Install 98SE, 2) Install Me, 3) Start DOS with CD, 4) Start DOS minimal. (Side note: I didn't know this before just trying it, but device=himem.sys isn't necessary because apparently it's part of Me's DOS environment already... just says an XMS manager is already installed when nothing else in CONFIG/AUTOEXEC would suggest so) I took this floppy image and rewrote it, also using MagicISO, into an IMA file which I imported into the ISO. Works awesome in that light. What I've done (since 98lite requires its own program files, the three optional 95 shell files, and the Windows source in the same folder on the hard drive) is configure the script to: Load the CDROM driver (MSCDEX.EXE in Autoexec, OAKCDROM.SYS in Config) Set PATH to reflect the emulated A:, C:, and the CDROM variable Quick-format C: (assuming the user has already partitioned it as desired) Un-RAR the 98lite files + the chosen Windows source to C:\W9XSETUP\ (Me-lite works, by the way) Navigate to C:\W9XSETUP\ and run 98lite /ng /nc (disable graphics, skip multi-version-CAB checking) This brings me to choose among 98lite SLEEK, the two I don't use, and 98micro. Either way, it reconfigures some of the Windows program files for the 95 Explorer and moves on to Setup. Where Me's setup runs SCANDISK without a hitch, 98's SCANDISK complains about a resident disk-caching utility (which also isn't present in the startup files) and prompts me to exit that before continuing. I just hit ESC to skip it, knowing there isn't any need to scan a newly-formatted drive. Like I said, the whole 98lite process works splendidly with Windows Me in the same fashion. But about 94% through installing 98SE, Setup complains about a missing OLEPRO32.DLL. I did some looking around here. It's supposed to be inside of WIN98_64.CAB (which it is, both before and after 98lite's little configuration), and even if I insert the unmodified 98SE disc, Setup still won't accept the WIN98_64.CAB for extraction. There were other files "missing" the first time I went through all this, but I later attributed them to the "Custom" options I picked. (Plus Setup just let me hit "Skip File" on all of them...) But even in a Typical install, I get this error. The interesting part shows when I click "Details..." It shows the source file as OLEPRO32.DLL while the destination is OLEPRO32.DLL=WIN98_64.CAB. I wonder if this is actually the naming that Setup is trying to copy, which would likely cause the error. But I don't know. I can't edit Setup to copy it any other way. Unlike kokiri, however, I'm not wasting CDs and a down machine trying to figure this one out. I've got it all sandboxed inside of a VPC on my Windows XP machine, so when I was debugging my startup scripts, I'd just rebuild and remount the ISO. If it proves useful at all, I have the boot image available for study, though I doubt it has any bearing on the issue at hand. I think that if someone else tried a similar 98SE source here, they'd probably wind up in the same boat. What I'm going to do is run a 98FE source through this and hope for a different result. I'll also try installing the 98SE without 98lite just to double-check that that isn't the problem. My boot image contains the 98lite files and those three 95 files (meaning all you need is a 98 source inside of a RAR file, named WIN98.RAR at the root folder of the disc) but because of this I won't be

@deda: Same here, for the Creative cards I use KX Project drivers, NEVER the Creative bloatware. And yes, MS provides basic drivers for ATI/NVIDIA but the best DX/OGL capable drivers are available from their makers. @monoxide: Nice going with the OEM brand; I believe magenta is the "alpha" color that blends with the window background. Help us out and do tell what you removed with nLite, if you did. I tried 3300 last night with the kitchen sink removed; no errors on part of the Security Center missing, but I was missing most of my Start menu and some apps (Solitaire, for instance.. but Spider made it) that I didn't choose for removal. I noticed that Setup skipped to the final stage about one-third through Copying Files (I use the classic 2k-looking setup). I removed everything from COM/LPT to Scanners to Modem support, all the languages outside ENU, and a ton of services. I've attached the preset file for nLite 1.4.1 here--fill in the Unattended section with your own product key, computer name, and workgroup. I use a path schema as follows (this is part of my preset): %systemdrive%\c = Common Files (must edit WINNT.SIF to reflect this--it defaults to %programfiles%\Common Files) %systemdrive%\p = Program Files %systemdrive%\t = Temp %systemdrive%\u = Documents and Settings (user profiles) %systemdrive%\w = Windows Keeps pathnames short and simple, without spaces (some apps like mIRC scripts require this), and if you think about it.. a smaller Registry.. Probably not much CPU overhead saved, but more compact from the get-go. Of course you could always change all of that back and toy with the removals for a better build.. I have an Athlon XP, so I don't waste my time with high CAB compression. Check it out. Btw.. This preset as-is reduces the 3300 source from 663 megs to 189. Last_Session.ini

Put 'em in. nLite'll take 'em out anyway! @cluberti, I respect your opinion not just because I have to, but because I understand why the SP would be better without. IMHO, however, I think it's a healthy trend for M$ to push their newest as part of such a massive update; they brought us DX9 and WMP9 with SP2; shame they can't somehow forge DX10 in by means of a hybrid kernel or what have you, but I'm just picking bones. I've seldom been desperate enough to use full-blown WMP when MPC and Winamp were at my disposal, but 11 strikes my fancy much more than the previous versions. Perhaps it was the fact that I was able to integrate it without a sweat when the option existed last year. I think it's gold no matter (though maybe the slip has some performance benefit over an upgrade). I used IE7 when it was still in beta and thought it could go either way--the final version only differs in stability but continues to lag terribly when starting, even when my homepage is "about:blank".. So while they might throw those in to the final build (or might not--who knows..), I believe that it's better left a choice for the end-user as a handful have stated, but I personally wouldn't be disappointed at the forced upgrade. It still isn't Vista, right?

@deda: SP3 *beta* does not include every hotfix post-SP2. If it did, who would need the HDA patch? Are you using onboard HD audio? Because I'm not. I have an Audigy2 and I doubt I will replicate the issue others are having--unless of course it affects all sound cards. So I won't find out if this RyanVM slip affects my 3300 build until after using someone else's machine as a guinea pig. @amnesia: What parts of nLite have you used on 3300? I am most interested in knowing if Security Center is clear for removal (as it wasn't in 3264--see nliteos.com) as I am aiming for a minimalist build. I don't remove IE anymore, but I go so far as the Event Log service, among others that should probably stay. I will flip a few switches, install this on a VPC, and report any weirdness, which I would attribute to the beta--not nLite. I'd like to give my shouts to the big heads on here, Ryan, Kel, Sig, Peel, (and of course nuhi) anyone else whose addons I've used to great advantage for almost four years now (since the first Unattended guide).. It (CMDOW.exe) isn't a virus; its purpose is to (as Symantec claims) hide the window of your choice. Used in such context as CMDOW @ /HID, this command is popular among users making unattended installations of Windows-- that DON'T want to show the end user some ugly DOS box that could be closed with the click of "X". By the words "help desk," I'm guessing you're in a business and have no choice but to use Symantec products. You have my deepest condolences. In the event that I'm wrong, may I suggest AVG (the Firewall edition, especially) or Avast! Antivirus: two solutions that won't bring a fresh new processor to its knees. Unfortunately, I have the job of installing Norton on new computers, but I've never gone the unattended route with strangers' computers, and as such, I've never seen that warning. But fear none-- you're not being hacked. CMDOW.exe is your friend (just not Norton's). -L

Firefox installs with a simple -ms switch? I've been using Mozilla's setup.exe all along. Edskes File Download Mirror is an excellent place to get the latest codec pack. (I have it bookmarked. )

Also, if it's anything like the 1.4.2 installer, you can run the EXE file and dig the MSI out of your temp folder (documents and settings\{username}\local settings\temp). Then just follow standard procedure for installing MSI packages: jre-1_4_2_06.msi /qn (or /qb! for progress bar without Cancel button) or msiexec jre-1_4_2_06.msi /qn The switchless silent installers are nice too, but when you're on a dialup and you already have the files you need...

@Mancubus: Excuse my delay... I don't frequent the board like I should! I learned about Inno Setup INF's from either the MSFN guide or AppDeploy.com, I forgot which. But both are very useful in finding switches. For any installer based on Inno Setup, creating a silent installation is as simple as running the EXE from the command line with the /SAVEINF="(path)\.inf" switch. For example: [b]D:\Apps\(Codecs)\klmcodec116.exe /SAVEINF="D:\Apps\(Codecs)\klmsilent.inf"[/b] Be sure to include the full path of the INF in your switch. This will launch the installer for K-Lite Mega Codec Pack with no visual differences. Just run the setup like you would, and pick only those options you want deployed in the silent installation (warning - the Indeo codecs will cause errors, so leave them unchecked). Then, once Setup is finished, your INF will appear where you specified. To use this with the unattended Windows installation, simply load the INF this time around and use the /SILENT switch (I haven't come across any apps that would ask to reboot, so it's usually okay not to use /NOREBOOT.) Example: [b]%systemdrive%\install\klmcodec116.exe /LOADINF="%systemdrive\install\klmsilent.inf" /SILENT[/b] Edit: Actually, I think [b]/SP-[/b] was the switch I left out. Has anyone other than me figured out the easy way to install their MSI progs? If you unpack the SFX EXE for programs such as Java 1.4.2_06, Kerio 4.1.2, BitDefender 7/8, and PC-cillin 2002/2003, you can install these programs from the command line with ONLY the [b]/qb[/b] switch and it will NOT reboot! And for anyone installing programs based on Nullsoft's NSIS installer (Winamp, CDex, etc.): Just install it, tweak it to your liking, and save the [b]contents[/b] of that program's folder into a SFX RAR... You can configure the SFX to make shortcuts on the desktop and Start Menu\Programs as it normally would... If you're extra savvy on SFX's, you should copy the Registry key [i]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\(program)[/i] into a .REG file and set the appropriate command to execute that file.
