    98lite

Here's the problem I'm experiencing with 98lite..... After installing 98lite on a clean install..... Trying to install DirectX 9.0c and I get some weird error that the CAB files can't be trusted and the install aborts. Some kind of Cryptography error of the CAB files. Does 98lite remove some program that is required for the CAB files to be processed?
  2. Based on the graphic picture, I like the new DESCRIPTION section of the SP install. I know for myself, it would be nice to have more information about each item that is being installed without having to consult the web-site for the details. Just getting better all the time ........ Only request would be a README file included in the package that is displayed at the begining or end that details the entire contents of the SP, with current fixes/changes in their own section.
  3. Which is better for a system with 2 memory slots: A. 2 sticks of 128MB SDRAM (PC133) B. 1 stick of 256MB SDRAM (PC133) Is there a performance hit for the system to address both slots for the memory vs. only one slot? As for price, I see that option B is cheaper than option A
  4. There is a page a Microsoft titled: "Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed They suggest the following: To work around this problem, use one of the following methods: Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less. For additional information about how to use the MaxFileCache setting, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 108079 32-Bit File Access Maximum Cache Size Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less. For additional information about how to use the System Configuration utility, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 181966 System Configuration Utility Advanced Troubleshooting Settings Reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 MB or less. Also, go into BIOS and change the AGP memory setting to 64Mb as opposed to 128MB or 256Mb Reading this article was very interesting, and at the end has "A NOTE FOR GAMERS" However, I found this part rather interesting....
  5. Whoa!! Don't shoot the messenger ... as you will note ..... I just copied the info from another website page ... also known as Cut & Paste. Interesting to see reactions to what he wrote both there ... and here.
  6. Re: Maximum memory for W98 ________________________________________________ philo wrote: > a machine running win98 should be able to accept 1.5 gigs of ram... > or possibly 2 gigs That may sound good on paper but is an inaccurate assumption in todays world, and the current day truth is that W9x is just not designed to handle more than 1 GB of ram. That 1.5 & 2 GB assumption was often repeated from the old school of thought where at the time they did not even have the hardware to even test that theory, but now that we do and it's been shown over and over that old school assumption is essentially just not true. I wish all the websites that repeat that phrase would update their sites because it's just not a reality! The reality is if you yourself or anyone took a thousand different 9x hardware setups, you won't see many if any actually being able with any trusting stability to run 1.5 GB, and I doubt you will ever see one run with 2 GB of RAM at all on a W98 machine. In reality 99.999% of the time 1 GB is the best you can do with any piece of mind and stability with W98, and so my advice is not to go exceed that - unless just for testing purposes - and if you do test it's imperative to consider that you also have complete OS partition backups for a way out of what can result out of that instability. 1 GB of ram in 9x needs a system.ini edit to match this: [vcache] MaxFileCache=512000 ...also for any tech wanting to test more than 1 GB of ram will need to also edit the system.ini file to prevent windows from attempting to use more than 1 GB of the total ram with this: [386enh] MaxPhysPage=40000 ...so why even bother if you can't use it! ..unless of course you are multi-booting on the same MB and want to use more than 1GB in W2K/WXP I personally don't recommend more than 1GB for 9x no matter what though ..go ahead though and try it <g> Lots of this is covered at these other websites, but again if it's listed on any websites pay no serious mind who advises to use 1.5 & 2 GB on 9x. Here is some good talk about the subject though at these websites: http://onlinehelp.bc.ca/tips.htm#64mb & http://aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.htm Rick ________________________________________________ NOTE: Info above extracted from this website
  7. How did you manage to obtain that bit of info? Will the MS Police raid this forum now?
  8. Not when the 2 phone lines are free and which also provides ... 2 phone lines.Besides, that isn't a solution to the original question. Based on the number of views, I have a feeling a lot of others have the same idea, just without the knowledge base of how to achieve the results.
  9. Is there a way to get a separate download that doesn't share similar fixes of the Unofficial Service Pack (thus reducing the download size)? Was wondering how you were able to extract the 905915 Cumulative Internet Explorer Update December 2005 for Windows 98 SE since Microsoft only lets you get it from the Windows Update. There are really only a few items in your list that I would like to obtain, but can't wait for 24MB to download to my PC using Dial-Up.
  10. My Computer: Dell Dimension 4100 [intel D815EEA] Pentium III 933 MHz [GPQD801] OS: Windows 98SE + SP 2.1a Slot 5: USR5660A [MODEM] Slot 4: Audigy SB0090 [AUDIO] Slot 3: N/A [NETWORK] Slot 2: N/A [DVD] Slot 1: N/A [NIC] AGP 4x: Radeon 8500 64MB I have another USR5660A that I would like to plug into my PC. I have two seperate phone lines available. Is there a way either through software or hardware to get two modems to work together making my network throughput 112K (56K+56K) ? Which slot would make sense to place another modem? I can only select one modem for my ISP connection. Just something to think about .... maybe someone else has tried this perhaps.
  11. My friend has a PC that I setup using my "Win98 Upgrade CD" which includes: DirectX 9.0c MDAC 2.81 Win 98 SE SP 2.1a etc., etc., etc. A game the kids wanted to try out called: Sudoku by Pappocom Required files: Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 Microsoft MDAC 2.8 (if you do not already have 2.6 or better) Microsoft XML 4.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Runtime Service Pack 6 Apparently, the only thing missing was MS XML 4.0 SP2 Was wondering if that will be included in a future release or should I add it to my own upgrade CD. The game was smart enough to not only figure out which components were needed, but download them also. Just would prefer everything be included for easy "load-and-go" especially on dial-up computers.
  12. Thanks Petr .... just found the info on the website:Release version number MDAC 2.8 SP1 (2.81.1117.6), May 2005 Minimum supported configuration • Microsoft Windows 98 with the Y2K Update 2 and Internet Explorer 5.01 • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition and Internet Explorer 5.01 • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition and Internet Explorer 5.01 • Microsoft Windows NT 4 Service Pack 5 (SP5) or a later version, and Internet Explorer 5.01 • Microsoft Windows 2000
  13. Thanks for the explanation Petr. Now .... next questions ..... ________________________________________________ Does the 98SESP2.1a include updates to MDAC??? What version of MDAC ships with Win98SE install CD? If I install the upgrade MDAC 2.8 --> BEFORE <-- I install the Service Pack, will I get the patch Q329414? Which is better .... the Q329414 package or the MDAC upgrade? Can Win98 handle the newer MDAC? ________________________________________________ MS02-065: Buffer overrun in Microsoft Data Access Components can lead to code execution. Notice The vulnerability does not affect Microsoft Windows XP, although Windows XP uses Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0. By default, Windows XP installs Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.7. MDAC 2.7 is not affected.
  14. How come when I use Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit (version 7.0t), it says the SP21 has failed verification. Is this because Advisor doesn't know that everything is bundled into one component? DataAccess no verification data Q329414-21 on 11/6/05 (details...) 15. Ideas would include something more along the lines of, as you put it ... exciting features. I'd like to see more enhancements like "NotePad", desktop changes (icons), etc. * Is there an enhanced calculator out there somewhere? Perhaps a way to automatically set: * System Props | Performance | File System | Floppy Disk | Search for new disk drives = OFF [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] * Or setting RegDone = 1 automatically (does it really get looked at anymore) * Maybe using values from CableNut to help either MODEM or CABLE users to optimze their values. What about looking into Microsoft JAVA VM http://www.xs4all.nl/~smuller/VMSite2/check.htm (works only with IE) Since DirectX 9.0c is practically a necessity, why not include: * Security Update for DirectX 9 (KB904706) [Download size: 567 KB] How about disk space conservation. It may seem useless with most hard-drives being above 40G, but for someone installing Win98SE on smaller (older) machines, removal of useless files might be kind of nice. Some examples come to mind: In C:\WINDOWS * dosrep.exe, winrep.exe * welcome.exe, tour98.exe
  16. OK. Well first, thanks for the link regarding Petr's UPDATE.SYS work. That was a very interesting read and made me think more about what really does get upgraded when Windows updates files. I guess my main question regards these bullets: - Add EXTRACT.EXE from IE 6.0 SP1. - Add IPROP.DLL from NT 6.0 SP6a. What updates were done to EXTRACT that would be needed. It's just an unpacking tool, correct? And what can you tell me about IPROP. This bullet needs some clairification also: - Optional fix for IE 6.0 SP1 file deletion problem with IE 5.5 SP2 files. I think the main reason I ask this is based on the Order of Install: If someone follows the path: -- Full 98 SE install -- Apply UNOFFICIAL SE SP2.0.1 -- Upgrade DirectX 9.0c -- Apply IE 6.0 SP1 -- etc. etc. etc. should the order then be reversed? -- Full 98 SE install -- Upgrade DirectX 9.0c -- Apply IE 6.0 SP1 -- Apply UNOFFICIAL SE SP2.0.1 -- etc. etc. etc. And what is the "file deletion problem" anyway?
  17. Can some of these be explained? Just wondering what some of this stuff means?
  18. It's like being in High School again ... ... and the battle between MAC vs. PC For those pompous, annoying and arrogant about their WinXP setup ... what's up with that? Is this some kind of self-esteem issue? Does it make you feel better than everyone else? Personally I will stick with Win98SE for the rest of my life ... maybe even longer. When I die, and St. Peter checks me in at the Pearly Gates, and wants to know what computer I want to use for eternity ... I"ll say "Load up the Win98SE please". Then he'll joke telling me that GOD uses the same thing. Of course, Satan uses Longhorn, but that's just obvious. XP is ike cars, it depreciates after you drive it off the lot. My old 1989 chevy gets more reactions from people than another friend's 2004 Toyota RAV4. Is the RAV4 faster? More Stable? Sure, the GUI is better ... but we get the same gas mileage and quite frankly ... the real truth is ... they both take us where we want to go. It's not my job to support MS and always buy the latest release. And since I also don't own stock in Dell, Gateway, or IBM, I also don't have the newest computer. Running XP on my computer (800 MHz) would be .... painfully, agonizing, and rediculously slow. How do I know? I installed XP for a friend on their computer. It was painful to set up and wait. And their computer was FASTER than mine, yet XP was still slow (celeron processor and only 192MB RAM probably). I had them get Win98SE from ebay and it moves much faster now. They are now selling their XP on ebay. As for those that can rattle off ALL the wonderful things about XP ... good for you. I'm sure that self-esteem is improving. I hope you are happy with the life you have chosen. A line that I remembered from the mini-series "V" said by Donovan that I'll change here: "Dont ever make me choose between your XP and my 98SE ... because you'll lose every time."
  19. First ... let me say ... I LOVE WIN98 SE SP 2 As someone who thinks Win98 is the best OS for any PC, it's great to have something that not only updates, but gathers together all the best ideas into one area. It's the way software always should be. Anyway, my favorites include: --------------------------------------------------------- -- Notepad. WOW! This is so much better than the original. Anyone that doesn't like it must also prefer to wash their clothes in a running stream instead of using a washing machine. -- Color/Icons. Makes me feel like I bought a new OS recently (but didn't). My FULL INSTALL order: --------------------------------------------------------- FORMAT C: /Q /S MKDIR C:\WIN98 COPY F:\WIN98\*.* /v C:\WIN98\SETUP /ie /is /iv modify (Network Server, DMA settings, remove LoadPowerProfile, Windows Logon, etc.) install DirextX-9.0c intall drivers (sound card, printer, display, monitor, etc.) install Windows Update Internet Pack (MSIE6sp1) from CD install 98SE SP2.0 install drivers (modem, USB devices, etc.) install .NET Framework 1.1 (+patches) install Media Player 9.0 (+patches) Some questions: --------------------------------------------------------- -- MS released MDAC 2.8 SP1 on 5/10/2005. Will that be included someday? More importantly, is there *any* MDAC upgrades installed? -- There are critical updates that need to be installed: KB890923 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 KB837009 - Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express Service Pack 1 KB833989 - VGX Security Update for Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 KB870669 - Data Access Components (ADODB.steam) I'm overall HIGHLY impressed with what has been accumulated, created and discovered. The combined input with the skill of someone to put it all together is amazing! I just may completely reinstall windows every 4 months now ... just for the fun of it!
