I believe that I remember this happening to me a while ago on my 2K systems, it was spyware. Ran SpyBot SD, now it works.

Wait, Can you tell me why you do not want to use switches. In the situation you are describing, it would much much more efficient to do so. You don't have to grab a $1,000.00 switch, just run to Best Buy and pick up a five-port for $29.99. It would certainly be cheaper than like 5 NIC Cards.
