I don't know if the latest version of X-Setup can do what it used to do, but Microsoft's Tweak UI can, under the Logon\Settings section.

You're probably thinking of the way Windows before XP did the pre-login wallpaper. With Win2000, for example, the wallpaper was a picture file, the path specified in the All Users (might have been Default User) registry. This is what X-Setup could change. If Fast User Switching is disabled (or the Use Welcome Screen unchecked), WinXP operates the same way. The default (using FUS), uses the msgina/shell32.dll/winlogon.exe, one of those probably, to show the new XP-style "logon screen". That's what can be quite hard to change. The other people on the forum here can probably help you better with that.

I had a problem similar to this for years, except I got no blue screen, just an instant restart. I'd hear a click from my hard drive just at, or seconds before, the restart. I thought all along that the hard drive was failing. I finally discovered what the problem was a few weeks ago: the IDE connecter on my hard drive was slightly loose. Any jiggle of the case (and sometimes changes in temperature) would make the hard drive shutoff and crash windows. Try clamping the connecters on the IDE cable a bit with some pliers, then put the plug back on the drive.

Like I said, the list is just a cache. Take for example the Volume icon in Windows. If it shows in the tray when you login, then it should be automatically added to that cache list with the default setting "Hide when inactive". Windows SHOULD rebuild the list like this, adding one program at a time as the programs add their icons to the tray. At what step is Windows failing in this?

Forgot to mention... I think the SharedDocs in Windows XP is available read-only by default. If you don't have a firewall (or are behind a hardware router), then anybody in the world can read what's in that folder. You probably have it read/write for some reason. I've concluded that most of the computers with this condition were meant to be set up in a home network, where other people in the house can access the files. The owners just don't know that they are sharing with anybody!

I do netscans every once in a while, and 100% of the computers I can get into and access (read/write) their hard drives have got those things in them. They are viruses going around trying to spread. They come from other computers who actually have been infected, and the files just sit there waiting for you to run them. When you reset the password, do they email you a new one, and immediately you try it and it doesn't work? If you are 200% sure you've got the right password, I'd say close or cancel the account.

That list is just a cache, a list of icons Windows saw recently. I would suggest going to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify and deleting (or renaming) these two values: IconStreams PastIconsStream (If they are corrupted, there's nothing to lose, so I would delete.) Windows will rebuild the list eventually.

Someone I know used Paragon, and was completely satisfied. I've never used any of them myself.

The only time I'd BUY a computer is a laptop, and only because I don't know how to build one of those. Even still, I would wipe the hard drive clean and start over without the OEM junk.

Not for me (on XP Home SP2). Going to WindowsUpdate starts the service, but I get this error anyway: [Error number: 0x8DDD0018] The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running: Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted) Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed) Change it back to Automatic, and WU works.
