  1. If I've been asking it is because I recalled the above post.

...that post was by erpdude, not by one of the win98se Prophets (MDGx, Gape)... I just did a few searches thru forums & google, and nowhere is it mentioned (by the Prophets) that his FIXED ole update breaks anything... (a few of the IE cumul. updates are mentioned as Help-breakers...), and this topic has been rehashed so much, we all should know exactly what Prophet MDGx has (painfully) restated, again, above, regarding it... it's very simple to remember: oleupdate 4526 only needs one of the 4 files to be 4522... and then no probs... very easy.

  2. -eidenk: I have 2 win98se puters occasionally running latest emule (first installed 2 wks ago), sometimes for days on end, and no freezes/crashes... I have read in emule/p2p forums that emule can freeze if it has network problems with # of TCP connections or bandwidth issues, usually if you're behind a router (I've had net probs behind router with p2p, but no freezes or crashes, just not able to surf, or Vonage VOIP gets choppy... found out that win98 sometimes has probs with more than 60 ("half-open"?) TCP connections; after reducing mine to <50, no more probs here.... just a thought... ;)

  3. -thx for the help, sry I was a bit cranky, in a lot of pain lately with both carpal tunnel AND tendonitis (just got my 1st wrist splint brace today, sure hope it helps!), plus neck pinch, bad elbow, bad knee, bad feet, ulcerative colitis, ....... and I'm only 37!... (sigh...lol) -So when puter wouldn't even boot, I was a bit put off...

-as always, you and Gape do a great job helping all of us get/keep our good-ol' win98se in top shape, and we all greatly appreciate it :thumbup ...

  4. -I'm pretty sure 98se2me copies all the ME files over, regardless of installed/uninstalled components... but of course u can try it and find out, just be sure to use 98se2me's backup function 1st, so u can restore your original "lite"-ed OS...

-u might also want to do some forum searches 1st, see what issues (if any) might be related to 98lite+98se2me... (and of course check MDGx's README files, just to be safe...)

  5. if your 2000 is running great, and u like it, you're better off staying w/it, for 4 reasons:

    1) NTFS is much safer than FAT32 (w98 can't do NTFS) (altho I find NTFS so much slower than FAT32, I'd rather sit thru a (rare) Scandisk once in a while  )

    ..

    2) even w/all updates and 98se2me, the classic (and annoying) memory/resource leaks of win98 are still there... GOD how I wish someone would create a fix for that!... (it's not so bad if u don't leave your puter on for very long periods of time, tho...)

    ..

    3) EEEEVIL AOL, if u *MUST* install it, runs like absolute CRAP on win98, always has, and especially versions 8.0+... really corrupts the whole OS, lots of BSOD's, in many cases... it's not so bad on newer OS's, for some reason...

    ..

    4) Some people have found hardware/driver support is better w/newer OS's, but personally I haven't seen any issues myself, on maybe half a dozen PC's, some of them very new...]

    ..

..... -even with those issues, I personally absolutely LUV win98se, w/sp2.02 & 98se2me (incl. option #3), and would NEVER "upgrade"... :thumbup

    >;]

  6. -ah, ok... sry if I sounded insulting, wasn't sure of your tech expertise... so much "dummy-proofing" is required for the teeming masses (even I mistakenly assumed that re-installing option 3 would not overwrite the previous backup; I thought the procedure was sufficiently "dummy-proofed" (generational backups), and ended up unpleasantly surprised :blushing: ... it was my over-assumption which prodded MDGx to better "dummy-proof" his Option 3 in recent versions...)

    ...

...... Hmmmm..... more thought on this matter is required, yet after 6 beers in the past 90 mins (on an empty stomach), I find my cognitive concentration even flakier than usual :P ... will think about it further when I "come-to" in the morning, if I even remember this post... >;]

  7. -sounds like u must have performed 98se2me's Backup option twice, overwriting the orig 98se backup with the current "ME"-mod... if so, then you'll have to rely on any backups you have made yourself... (-you DID follow healthy puter practices by having your own 98se backups, before trying 98se2me, right? ;) lol... hope so!)

    >;]

(ps: same thing for option 3; previous versions of 98se2me would overwrite the orig 98se files, if u ran option #3 more than once... killing your chance to undo #3...)

  8. * uh oh, Gape: sp2.cab (from sp2.02) slipstreamed into OPTIONS/CABS thoroughly *breaks* a fresh w98se reinstall !

    ...

-I traced my reinstall problem down, using a 4/25/05 backup of OPTIONS/CABS... -without sp2.cab slipped, it installs perfectly, but with sp2 slipped it causes *many* errors & corruptions of the w98se fresh install (see my previous few posts for details)...

    ...

-I will try to find my oldest backup of OPTIONS/CABS and test it again, but sp2 should not break recent or current OPTIONS/CABS, since many OEM puters don't come with a w98se install CD, they just have the install files in \windows\options\cabs, which get updated occasionally by applied MS updates, etc... -of course, a workaround is simple: just don't slip it, install first, then run sp2.02... but it'd be nice to have it slipped, and to find out why it breaks the install...

    ?

(note: I think some previous version(s) of SP2 slipped just fine, during reinstalls...?)

  9. -sonic: ? why wouldn't directx 9.0c be good for old machines? -isn't it backward-compatible?...

    ...

    -and: update on reinstall problems:

well, same problem with OPTIONS/CABS from a 6/9/05 backup (w/then-current sp2/updates slipped), but I found a 4/25/05 backup of OPTIONS/CABS (no sp2 slip), and it works fine... (I recall it also worked fine back around that time, w/sp2 slipped)... -so, whatever newer updates/changes, between 4/25 and 6/09, roughly, must have broken OPTIONS/CABS for reinstall... (or the possibility still exists that OPTIONS/CABS was somehow otherwise corrupted, but rechecking the files, it looks ok)

    ...

-I will next test the 4-25-05 (non-sp2-slip) with the most recent sp2 slipped, and then with other recent updates, too... [sigh... I've wiped & reinstalled about 12 times now, and more coming up... wee.]

    >;]

  10. -good point, sonic... I've often wondered the same thing, altho I haven't had any problems with (many) installations yet...

    ...

-one prob I am having rite now, is trying to "fresh" reinstall w98se w/sp2.02 slipstreamed...

    ..

I took OPTIONS/CABS from a current (fully updated) OS (w/sp2.02 slipstreamed), and used it on otherwise blank partition to "fresh" reinstall, which has worked fine about a month ago, but now apparently something is broken, many errors during setup installation, and afterwards too...

    ..

(for example: during last phase of setup (Settings/Configuration), it starts as "Windows Update... An Error has occured loading c:\windows\system\wshext.dll... the file may not have been installed or is corrupted...", and it basically repeats that kind of error with many other system files: initpki.dll, cryptdlg.dll, Java Package Manager-xmlds04.cab, dajava.cab, iejava.cab, MSASN1.DLL, devmgr32.dll...)

    ...

-even after setup finishes, and the OS is booting/running ok, when I tried to install IE5.5sp2, hoping that maybe it would replace/update/register/fix the problem files, it just repeats the same errors/files...

    ..

I need to do further testing (in a few days; very busy rite now), perhaps that particular OPTIONS/CABS somehow got corrupted (altho when comparing files it *looks* ok, at first glance), I'll find an older ("clean") OPTIONS/CABS & O.S., and run all updates & slip sp2.02 into it, see how it goes... but in the meantime, I was just wondering if anybody out there has had similar experience, or any ideas... ?

    >;]

  11. -hmm, I have no personal experience w/win2000, but I've heard it described as "winxp minus some bloat and the eye candy crap", so it may have potential...

    ...

-wait, tell me a few things:

#1: how big is your \windows ("\winnt"? "\win2k"?) directory, and

#2: how long does it take to COMPLETELY cold boot, boot from hibernate, and shutdown? ("completely" means waiting for ALL things to load up in SysTray, and no more hourglasses)... include your CPU speed for reference...

    >;]

  12. -that w98undo.dat is really not necessary, as long as the reinstall has been running well for a while... -it's just in case you don't like the reinstall, ya can (supposedly) revert back to the OS state before doing the overlay-reinstall... (I've never tried it, never heard about anyone trying it, but it's there if ya need it, I guess... ya can always burn it to CD, save it...)

    ...

[ps: -overlay reinstalls are strongly discouraged, I've personally tried it several times, and it usually didn't seem to do a dam thing, leaving most (if not all) of the errors/corruptions in place... sometimes, it -looks- like it worked well, but down the line ya notice insideous or delayed corruption that shouldn't be there; only a fresh reinstall guarantees stability/performance, even with the very cool sesp2/98se2me pkgs installed... from reading these forums, I've noticed that sometimes old/previous corruption or over-tweaking (for example, over-zealous registry cleaners/cleaning) can actually trigger problems after installing sp2 or 98se2me, problems u won't get with a fresh install (or an old install that ya didn't "meddle" with too much  )

  13. lol... -yeah, my 15 yr old nephew keeps absolutely POLLUTING his system w/sloppy cracks, and guess who gets to spend hours moppin-it-up every week? -Yep, that's rite, his good ol' PSYCOUNCle, that's who... sigh...

    >;]

    ...

(...that kid could infect an ABACUS, just by walkin by it... :P )

  14. -wow, excellent sci-fi stats/trivia, MDGx! :thumbup

    .

(...I forgot to add Babylon5 to my "miss it" list... among others... :} -hey, does anybody else feel like an alien outsider, imprisoned in this human shell/world for some galactic crimes, mind-wiped for the duration of our "prison sentence" (life on this absurd, ignorant, Reality-TV-filled planet) ? lol -or is it just me... B) )

    >;]

  15. [edit: lol, looks like miko beat me to the punch, and summarized nicely, at that, while I was still typing this (too dam long) reply... :P ]

-welcome, and don't worry, installation of both major projects (sesp2.02, and 98se2me) is very easy and automatic, and tends to make 98se faster and more stable (especially 98se2me, altho for that ya need to have a copy of windowsME install cd or install cab files (often located in c:\windows\options\cabs on an already-installed ME system).

    ...

Even if you have all the critical updates done, the sesp2.02 is still a good idea for many reasons, see it's home page for details... and the best performance/stability will be with 98se2me (done after sesp2.02), I've just stumbled across these things in the past few months, and it's made a HUGE difference in speed/stability on my w98se system (I thought I had it all tweaked out already, boy was I mistaken! lol). -It's SO NICE to have that old previously-common "Invalid Page Fault" message a thing of the past! :thumbup:thumbup

    ...

-even tho installation of both pkgs is easy, make sure ya read the recommended material before going ahead w/it... (including the installation guide in the forum)

    ...

-oh, a note: it's best to do it on a "fresh" clean installation of w98se (not a reinstall over an already-existing w98se; wipe it and start fresh), but it's not necessary, and a fresh install is a bit of work, I know... especially for newbies, no offense... It's absolutely fine to do it on an already-existing old-install, but best performance/stability is achieved w/fresh install...

    ...

    -gl, and enjoy the improvements!

  16. -hmm, interesting... I know a lot of people have liked AVG, but I never understood that, since it definitely made 3 diff. puters here and 1 or 2 of my friends' puters have noticeably more IPF's, and it did slow em all down much more than avast did... in every case, it was uninstalled very quickly because of it... -the IPF error messages didn't list AVG services as the culprit (Explorer, usually), but again in every case they happened much more frequently with AVG installed than w/out (or than with Avast). I quickly learned to avoid AVG like the plague, and always recommended people to avoid it as well, I HATE IPF's... oh well, perhaps it was just coincidence, but 4 or 5 puters is quite a coincidence, if so...

-to each their own, I suppose...

    >;]

  17. with win 98 you gotta slow down as it really can't keep up.

-that's funny, my win98se absolutely screams no matter what I do, instant reactions, not a chance of clicking/etc too fast for it... (and it's just a celeron 1.8ghz)

-now, winXP, on the other hand...lol... there's nothing I CAN do quickly on that hog, always waiting on the dam OS, every step of the way... and that puter has a 3.0ghz!

    lol

    >;]

    (sry, couldn't resist.... :P )

    ..

ps: -only time I've seen win98se slow at all, is on VERY old puter, evil Compaq Presario 500mhz... with old slow HD's...

(but don't wanna start up THAT old side-thread again...)
