  1. I can't be sure without making a windows installation to test it, but I think the missing componant is Windows Image Aquisition - which needs the Shell service to run.

    It looks like WIA isn't just for digital cameras and webcams - it's also for removable hard disks and USB sticks.

    I could be completely wrong, and I'd be happy to be corrected by someone who knows what they're talking about, but that's what documentation and chat scattered across the net suggests.

    As for Plug and Play, the same reading suggests that it's for printers and scanners - and sometimes modems.

    You are right

  2. Those are both neat, but they both require XP+ and Paint.NET requires .NET2 :(

    Artweaver

    And as Kel mentioned PhotoFiltre, there is a freeware version here:

    http://photofiltre.free.fr/frames_en.htm

    I don't see that ArtWeaver has any photo-oriented features. It is for drawing. Or am I missing something?

    PhotoFiltre looks awesome! I think we may have a winner :)

    I have read this with a lot of interest. I have some B&W photos of my grand parents. Is there an app to colorize them?

    :blink:

    The photos were recorded in black and white... there IS no color data there. Sure you could add fake color but there's no way you're going to be able to turn black and white photos into color photos. It's just not possible.

    dirt, I found this link while reading these posts but I don't think it is exactly what you want: http://www.artweaver.de/index.php?id=62,144,0,0,1,0

    Thanks it looks like it might work.

  3. Hi

    got an old laptop running good old windows 3.1. It has 128MB RAM (Upgradeable to 256MB though) , 3.2GB hard drive , Pentium 2 233mhz , floppy drive , USB cd rom drive ( the laptop didnt have a cd drive so ive purchased one as this is obviously required if i want 98 or 2000)

    Im deciding between win98SE and windows 2000 pro.

    Which one would run smoother?

    I do understand that windows 98se is now out of support and that all the windows 2000 support is ending in july 2010. For this reason , as well as better usb support in 2k , i would prefer to go with 2k but i dont know whether the laptop will be ok with it

    Help, much appreciated

    Kindest Regards

    It should be ok with it. 2k only needs 64 meg of ram. 128 is ok but I would go more. 2k has more driver support than 9x. In the end the choice is yours to make.

  4. Well, it's easy to get most "XP only" software working on Windows 2000 by putting the .dlls and other files to the programs own folder like fdv said but newer games are usually impossible to get working on Windows 2000...

    Here is an example:

    samandmaxeg0.th.png

    I think this error message would say "The procedure entry point AddVectoredExceptionHandler could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL" in english.

    This game uses a kernel function that only exist in XP, 2003 and Vista:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms679274.aspx

    Personaly I like to use Windows 2000 as my OS but things like this forces me to use XP or server 2003 (at least for gaming)...

    I'd love to see a KernelEx project for Windows 2000...

    Windows 2000 with server 2003 kernel would be the best Windows OS ever!

    That would be excellent.

  5. A lot of folks can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in our country.

    ~~~
    Well, there's a very simple answer.
    ~~~

    Nobody bothered to check the oil.

    ~~~
    We just didn't know we were getting low.
    ~~~

    The reason for that is purely geographical.

    ~~~
    Our OIL is located in :
    ~~~

    ALASKA

    ~~~
    California
    ~~~

    Coastal Florida

    ~~~
    Coastal Louisiana
    ~~~

    Wyoming

    ~~~
    Colorado
    ~~~

    Kansas

    ~~~
    Oklahoma
    ~~~

    Pennsylvania

    and

    Texas

    ~~~
    Our dipsticks are located in DC
    Any Questions? NO?...Didn't think So.
  6. Just wondering what the smallest 2k with usp5 slipstreamed, using HFSLIP with reducers and Nlite. So far I have got a 87 meg iso that function well. Is there any smaller than this? If so how did you do it.
  7. A little girl asked her Mom, "Mom, may I take the dog for a walk around the block?" Mom replies, "No, because she is in heat."
    "What's that mean?" asked the child.
    "Go ask your father. I think he's in the garage."
    The little girl goes to the garage and says, "Dad, may I take Belle for a walk around the block? I asked Mom, but she said the dog was in heat, and to come to you."
    Dad said, "Bring Belle over here." He took a rag , soaked it with gasoline, and scrubbed the dog's backside with it to disguise the scent, and said
    "OK, you can go now, but keep Belle on the leash and only go one time round the block.."
    The little girl left and returned a few minutes later with no dog on the leash. Surprised, Dad asked, "Where's Belle?"
    The little girl said, "She ran out of gas about halfway down the block, so another dog is pushing her home."
