  1. GDI Heap Extender is a technology aimed to improve Windows 98/Me system capability to load more programs and run more stable by extending available GDI resources.

    Download:

    http://tihiy.ahanix.org/rpXbeta2.zip

    With the new rpXbeta2 dr watson is now running all the time, can't find how it is getting loaded to shut it down on startup.

    Doesn't work with System Tool, and can't find in registry where its loaded?

    Thanks,Charlie

    Yeah, the last beta2 is unstable, more so than beta1.

    So... use rpXbeta1.

    Your right,thanks

  2. Ran option 2 and it did not replace the ME wan.tsp with the 98, but did replace IRPROPS.CPL + IRFTP.EXE 4.90.3000.

    Had to replace manually out of 98! folder.

    Please let me know if there is a copy of WAN.TSP [37200 bytes] in C:\9!M [it should be, it is installed by 98SE2ME.EXE].

    When you 1st run 98SE2ME, even if you don't install any options, WAN.TSP should be copied into %windir%\SYSTEM from within 98SE2ME.BAT:

    ECHO A | IF EXIST %windir%\SYSTEM\WAN.TSP C:\9!M\ATTRIB.COM/B +A -H -R -S %windir%\SYSTEM\WAN.TSP>NUL
    IF EXIST C:\9!M\WAN.TSP COPY/Y/Z C:\9!M\WAN.TSP %windir%\SYSTEM>NUL

    When you install option 1 or 2, WAN.TSP is copied to the temp install folder [C:\9S2M] from C:\9!M, and to %windir%\SYSTEM [from O2.BAT and from 2G.INF], just to make sure. ;)

    O2.BAT:

    IF EXIST C:\9!M\WAN.TSP COPY/Y/Z C:\9!M\WAN.TSP C:\9S2M\SYSTEM>NUL
    ECHO A | IF EXIST %windir%\SYSTEM\WAN.TSP C:\9!M\ATTRIB.COM/B +A -H -R -S %windir%\SYSTEM\WAN.TSP>NUL
    IF EXIST C:\9!M\WAN.TSP COPY/Y/Z C:\9!M\WAN.TSP %windir%\SYSTEM>NUL

    2G.INF:

    [s][INO]
    CopyFiles=WAN
    [WAN]
    WAN.TSP,,,4
    [DestinationDirs]
    WAN=11[/s]

    And just to be sure, I uploaded 98SE2ME.EXE again...

    Please download it and try 1 more time [4.2 MB]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/4

    Thanks for your time + concern.

    Best,

    MDGx

    Edit:

    Removed backup installation of WAN.TSP from 2G.INF, because WAN.TSP may be %windir%\SYSTEM after being copied to %windir%\SYSTEM . [This is a limitation if INF files CopyFiles directive. :(]

    Yes it did put a copy in C:\9!M, and I just move it to %windir%\SYSTEM - so it was not deleted from 9!M.

    Have not run new 98SE2ME.EXE , because I move it manualy.

    Thanks for the reply

    setup CD-ROM with older Win98 SE WAN.TSP [%windir%\SYSTEM] from Win98 SE setup

    CD-ROM to fix nasty (USB) xDSL modems (RAS)PPPoE bug. [thank you Geo]

    Breakthrough: 98SE2ME works now properly with xDSL and RASPPPoE!

    * Options 1 + 2: added newer WinME IRPROPS.CPL + IRFTP.EXE 4.90.3000

    [%windir%\SYSTEM]. [thank you PROBLEMCHYLD]

  4. bump

    What's the bump for?  :blink:

    Dencorso gave the link in post#3 to Docx2Rtf v3.8.

    It does exactly what the OP was asking for.

    Docx2Rtf v3.8===Text in col. was bad and in wrong places for the images, some backgrounds not quite right.

    Only this online web site(free) has worked for me, and only really right in a .PDF file for proper looks.

    Hoping this thread would continue and maybe find a better solution in the form of an apps. for a DOC. file.

    Didn't mean to upset anybody - sorry.

  5. This PC had a legit copy of Windows XP (Though the hard drive it resided on pooped out) I dont have the CD for it, but I did have a Windows 98 SE CD lieing around.

    As for Vista, this computer is way too slow. The only thing in it the meets the minimum requirements is the CPU. I'm waiting until Vista matures and Microsoft combs out the really bad security holes/stability issues and then when that happens I'll build a PC meeting the recomended requirements. I've helped people out with their Windows Vista computers. Windows Vista does some pretty weird things.

    I'm pretty sure the computer has no viruses. I think those third party patches I installed made Windows 2k freak out to be honest. That and the second time I think it caused stability issues with Windows 98 se being on the same drive (Which had nothing to do with the third party patches, just the different things mightve confused things)

    And I looked on newegg, but I just saw copies of Windows XP intended for a classroom ($200-300 CDN) Which is just nuts, since I dont need a classroom license. Just for my home PC.

    Again, thanks for your help. I think there's no point trying to fix that thing for now.

    Sounds more like video card is over heating, this will freeze screen and mouse. Try cleaning your tower - dust and lint on fans and video card. Check on a utility software to read temp. on card and or CPU.

  6. Does anyone else have a problem with UDF cd/dvd built on another computer, being able to read them in 98 windows. Have tried CDroller and Isobuster, but even thou the stand alone readers show the files are there, you can't open or copy them. Saids windows can see file. And in "My Computer" if you open the drive it show empty disc. Go to Walmart and read them fine?

    Charlie

    If you trying to read DVD recorded in UDF 2.x format then it impossible, because maximal version of UDF what Windows 98 support is 1.01. I haved this problem too earlier, but after long searches i found working driver for 9x named ReadDVD! from Software Architects. Look for that in Google. Good luck. :)

    Thanks, Charlie

  7. what would be the best caches settings for gaming

    After benchmarking my drives with Norton apps, using all combination of numbers, smaller was better.

    Highest reading was with -----

    ==================================================

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]

    "ReadAheadThreshold"=hex:00,20,00,00

    "PathCache"=hex:ff,00,00,00

    "NameCache"=hex:00,ff,00,00

    ==================================================

    ReadAheadThreshold ended up being really small ---- 8 KB

    Pathcache and Namecache also affected speed of read/write to drive ---- set to max.

  8. Well?

    this is what i found:-

    "readahead thereshold 00 00 01 00"

    anyone knows what this means or we can change it?

    The registry setting is ----

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]

    "ReadAheadThreshold"=hex:00,00,16,00

    -----------

    This is the best setting for my machine, maybe to high for you. 16 = 1024

    just change "00 00 01 00" to "00 00 16 00"

    other settings are ---

    64 = 4096

    32 = 2048

    16 = 1024 ------ this is my best setting

    8 = 512

    4 = 264

    2 = 128

    1 = 64

    Hope this helps you,

    Charlie

  9. I'm wondering if there is a program for 98SE that mimics XP's Image and Fax viewer.

    Nothing special, I just want to double click a picture and be able to scroll through photos without the hassle of going back to explorer and finding the next picture. I've read about some kind of KODAK program that comes with 98, and I found some program called Imaging, but it does next to nothing, and getting it to associate with photo formats will be a long, manual process. I also did a search of the 9x and special project sections of this forum, with no luck.

    I know there must be something I'm missing.

    This one is the best!!!!!

  10. 'We all' - being the 5-6 people that responded minus Dave-H and myself? Would not exactly call that a large enough cross section to be concerned, especially when there have been no reported ill effects from removing the cryptic keys. I'd really like to see a hijackthis log from one of the target systems if someone could oblige, maybe it will find some other keys that could narrow the hunt.

    I have the same entry and have used hijackthis for along time. Never found this entry as a problem in the log file.

  11. You can switch the disks around physically

    The only problem in this is that you must open the box to unplug/plug every new HD.

    I wonder if there is any procedure to keep the master HD out of the box while using it, so that the change may be done easily, or if it is possible to use any existing device to switch from outside the connection of two main HD into the motherboard, as it happens in many other fields, i.e. in Sat-tv to switch between external parabole antennas.

    I think what you want is a "Nicklock" if you can still find one, or build it yourself--here

    http://www.dvhardware.net/modules.php?name...cle&artid=4

    I have a Nicklock installed for years and love it.

  13. You rock, blackwire, you sure do! :thumbup

    Careful, This does not open all pages in .docx files - Sure was hoping this would be the thing, since i'm still using office 97.

  14. Hmm. I think I'll try that. Gotta figure out which file in the Auto-Patcher files folder is the Scripting update. :) I've got the modules list printed out. Maybe that'll help me figure out what KB number it is, or hopefully it's just labeled SCR5.6 or something.

    The problem is in Module "windows optional componets-page 2" called - Scripting Engine Update 5.6.8832 -- in folder file name is SCR569X.exe

    Now, how do you uninstall this unofficial update?

    Charlie

  15. This computer has been on our home network for several years. And it is currently (as of 5 min ago) on-line and working fine. I am re-installing the Full November Autopatcher (from cd). But it rarely stays on-line very long. Especially if I go to any download site. I'll go to McAfee.com, get to the log-in and it will lock up. Ditto for Spybot. I never even get to click on "run" or "save" before it locks up. I did finally download Spybot and it did so normally; then went to McaAee and it locked up before I could get to the log-in page. Our other network computers are XP and are working well. It installs and opens from cd's fine.

    Suggestions, please.

    TLCMD

    Check your CPU temperture - probably running high!

  16. Hi Charlie,

    You are not missing any font, it's just that I haven't translated everything in this executable. (I'll try to finish it someday but don't expect anything anytime soon).

    It halts probably because of what it calls "ghost" keys. By using the right options you can force it to ignore that.

    Alternatively you can run registrip on both dat files and look if it find problems in the report tab. You need to click on the small text icon for the report to display. At the bottom of the report will be listed the registry keys found to have "problems". It will be keys containing non "standard" ASCII characters. If you delete those keys with regedit, you should then find that regcon will proceed without errors with the default options.

    Use at your own risk and let me know if you encounter other problems.

    Got it - Option "Force reconstruction in case of ghost keys."

    Your the man!

  17. Mmmh, I downloaded them again an guess what ? I had extreme difficulties to extract regdoc this time (other was fine).

    Very weird shall we say.

    Anyway, I made a new archive that contains them both, a zip this time. It's here :

    Thanks, that opened with 7-zip - who knows with Rapidshare?

    This should help me in reducing the registry size.

    Charlie

    Question - when I run regcon, after it runs system and user.dat, a second window pops up - "C:Windows\system.dat", with japanese lettering and a "OK" at bottom. When I click "OK" it halts Regcon? The txt files that came with it are in japanese or I'm missing a Font to read it. What next?
