@legacyfan, I think there's a requirement to avoid duplicating posts and topics about the same things all over again. @Tripredacus

    Already have that.

this has nothing to do with that thread as its talking about the emergency server move situation not just that its down as its not down just very buggy to use right now

  3. as of yesterday evening eclipse.cx is officially down due to server errors that caused an emergency server move  @K4sum1 is aware of the issues and is working on restoring everything but for now nothing works and will get an ajax 500 error on loading the site i know quite a few people use this forum and i hope this does not interfere with anything

  4. Ive had enough of the money-grabbing microsoft has gotten themselves into the past 8 years as nothing has changed windows 8/8.1 is still a disaster windows 7 has a huge amd driver block so i cant use my new gpu on it and windows 10 goes out of support in 1 year from now im just sick of windows in general and will be permanently switching to linux for the foreseeable future i will not be giving microsoft another cent of my money towards there "telemetry infested" OS any longer! we need to stand up to are freedoms not just act like they can be temporarily erased

That's the version/source I tried also.  Will not launch in a Win10 x64 VM.  Did not track down "why".  May attempt again later in the week.

Show us a screencap of its about:networking page.  That will reveal any embedded telemetry.

My hunch is that if Waterfox Classic has embedded telemetry, than so does the non-classic version!

I could not get Waterfox to launch.  I could get Waterfox Classic to launch and I'm NOT liking what I see there.

Regarding 0-day - DOES NOT CONCERN ME!  "Hype and Propaganda" in my book.  Blacklisting javascript and only whitelisting on a dozen cites you visit regularly TYPICALLY IS ENOUGH TO PREVENT ANY-AND-ALL ZERO-DAY BS!

the version of waterfox i downloaded was ver 128 which is the same as normal firefox and i also checked and all telemetry server about:config settings where preconfigured to all be off already on install this is the website for the one im currently using https://www.waterfox.net/

  7. just tried out installing waterfox just now and so far dnssniffer has found no dns related browser connections with telemetry Ive also done the task scheduler and regedit telemetry disable tricks and completely stopped the customer experience program service

These first-launch DNS hits look like TELEMETRY to me!  But sure, it's an improvement to most Firefox/Mozilla Forks.

I would stick with IceCat *if* I was forced to use a Mozilla Fork.  Thankfully, I'm not forced to use them.  To each their own, of course.

And the so-called "portable" version added an entry to my start menu, entries to my registry, and what appears to be a UNQUE ID FOLDER inside ProgramData.  :realmad:

Which is why I only try inside a fresh/clean VM.  I can now delete this VM as its cleanliness has been compromised.

I think this has taken the previous discussion slightly out of context.

Sure, I'll grant you that some folks (not me!) rely heavily on "getting updates" (be it fully automatic or manual) - I see that itself as FEAR-MONGERING, some form of "update or else" side of the same coin!

But it seems to me that the previous discussion was more to do with a fully functioning, fast and efficient Windows 10.  And not "telemetry" in and of itself.

The XP folks probably remember the popularity of this and perhaps even carried it over to their 10/11 via this, but make no mistake, removing "spy" features of our OS-of-choice is something most of us have been doing for DECADES.

    image.png.ec72deaf05af6db88da437e3d2d955a1.png

this is completely correct and i will continue to deny telemetry and its uses for as long as information hungry company's continue to dominate what your os sends to them without your confirmed consent! and will officially retract my statement saying its not a "telemetry bloater" as it definitely is nomatter how you put it

  11. while windows 10 does have its issues i have never once had any problems with updates on windows 10 ever this whole disable updates or get spied on scaremongering is overused   out in the world today pretty much every company uses telemetry now for almost anything they can possible fit it in and stopping it 100% will never become a reality as there is to much for simply disabling it while i do respect those who make it there goal to minimize it you can never fully stop it as company's will always be one step ahead of you on keeping that from happening

That's not enough.  Especially for 10 and 11.

If you want an OS without telemetry, you MUST remove "defender" , "smartscreen", "security center", and WINDOWS UPDATE.

If you cannot bring yourself to using an OS that doesn't "update itself", then you (collective pronoun!) are "talking from both sides of your mouth" regarding TELEMETRY.

I think what MANY of us forget is that it took us DECADES to get XP (just an example) to "behave" the way we wanted it to.  But then we "expect" 10 (or 11) to compete with those "decades of fixes" we did with XP.

I cite XP from personal experience.  XP had bloat.  XP was spyware!  Look up the history of "Alexa" and the way that XP [SP2+] handled IE downloads and Outlook Express attachments!  We just figured out how to remove the bloat and spyware.

i agree with this about the telemetry it's a big annoyance that i can never seem to remove completely and while i do want to remove everything for me updates are something i will always use but with the exception of removing the telemetry filled updates as i for one am not convinced by the whole every update has telemetry scaring that microsoft wants you to think

Like everything else that has embedded spyware (ie, Firefox, Chrome, Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, 7, Vista, 8, 8.1, 10, 11, 360Chrome, you name it!), there are ways to remove it!

I was still running XP all the way through THIS YEAR.

It was only just months ago that I finally ditched XP and started using a heavily tweaked and customized bloat-free spyware-free Win10.

It took many many months of trial-and-error FREEBIE TOOL ALREADY MENTIONED to get Win10 to my liking.

for me using wise force uninstall tool always works to remove the bloat without failing its been my go-to method for windows 10 repair

    https://betanews.com/2023/12/21/windows-10-240-million-pcs-e-waste/

Experts say the end of Windows 10 support could turn 240 million PCs into e-waste

The upcoming end of Windows 10 support may lead to hundreds of millions of devices becoming obsolete, potentially contributing significantly to electronic waste. The industry predicts that the end of Windows 10 support in 2024 will affect customers' refresh plans, with one in three devices expected to be replaced in the next two years.

Despite the growing capabilities of partners to refurbish and resell PCs, devices not supported by Windows 11 will not be viable for reuse, exacerbating the industry's e-waste problem.

SEE ALSO: Win10Privacy 5.0 gives you complete control over your privacy in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Market research firm Canalys predicts an 8 percent growth in the PC market by 2024, spurred by customers upgrading their pandemic-era PCs and the emergence of new AI-capable devices. However, the hardware requirements of Windows 11 may prevent many in-use devices from being refurbished for a second life.

Canalys estimates that around 240 million PCs will become e-waste when Windows 10 support ends in October 2025. Most of these devices, if in good condition, could be recycled, but their incompatibility with Windows 11 significantly reduces their value for refurbishment and resale.

While these PCs could still be usable for years, demand for devices no longer supported by Microsoft will be minimal, even among companies with tight IT budgets. Moreover, donating these devices to disadvantaged communities is not a viable or socially sustainable solution to bridging the digital divide.

In response to these concerns, Microsoft has announced that Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 will be available until October 2028, albeit for an unspecified annual fee. However, the cost of these updates may deter many users, pushing them to migrate to newer, Windows 11-capable PCs.

The e-waste implications of the end of Windows 10 support highlight the responsibility of device and operating system vendors to maximize the lifespan of their products. To support a circular economy, vendors must ensure their devices are durable, repairable, and recyclable, and remain usable and secure for as long as possible. However, without regulations to drive this change in the PC market, cross-industry collaboration may be the only solution to the technology sector's persistent e-waste problem.

this whole e-waste myth is getting a little crazy now as there are other options for how to reuse a old pc well past 2025 even using linux while i don't usually recommend it due to its terrible non ease of use is still one of the few best options besides downgrading to windows 7-XP and hoping everything still functions

To be honest, I've never understood the fascination with "desktops".  Just a bunch of "clutter" in my opinion.

Plus, if we are talking about how "your windows 10 looks", per thread title, then there is SSSOOOOOO much more to "looks" then just the "desktop".

ie, Win10 likes to do some of the context menus in "dark mode" even when you tell it to use "light mode" --  NOT ON MY WATCH THEY DON'T, hate hate hate "dark mode", even if just a context menu!

    My left-click Start Menu -

    My right-click Taskbar's Context Menu -

i really only use darkmode to get the colored taskbar function working and that's pretty much it Ive hardly ever used it at all and i rarely ever change anything with the startmenu except for removing tiles if it was not for my amd card only supporting windows 10 for some unknown reason i would of switched to something older by now

I don't see how this offer provides value to an individual consumer. To him it might look similar to the technical support scams. I wouldn't install their updates or Defender if I was paid $30. They take up disk space, are known to sometimes bring anti-features. The exception being something that is actually useful for interoperability, like new SSL certificates (forced upon us by other companies) or a new USB generation, or another technology that happens to be refinement stage about now like the Vulkan thing. But these probably won't be made as part of "security" support.

im sticking with windows 10 below 2004 as those were at least known for having the least amount of telemetry of the bunch plus Ive never had any update issues with anything everything after that is just extra weight i don't need on an os
