  1. seasonics (s12-II not s12-III and focus gold been good ones and made by oem) just avoid s12-III, it uses one japanese cap while, rest are cheapo I mean teapo. s12-II had all caps japanese
  2. there was some way to "include" driver to setup after been installed, but forgot which way. Then it should prompt press to esc to cancel loading iastor.sys when going safe mode.
  3. Did you use offical driver? Maybe try reinstall sata drivers. And that bsod means inaccessible boot device
  4. Ah. Minor misundersanding. And that is true. Software gets more bloated over time making point of better computing power worthless
  5. What chipset and what driver do you use? Did you install driver during or after setup? Also what BSOD you got? 0x0000007?
  6. Soon it is important day to me, well to my Windows 98 machine. It has been 3 years since got it and got back to Windows 98 scene properly after had break. I tell short story here how ended back to Windows 9x user. Back when I was as child, my dad had computers with Windows 95 and later Windows 98. I remember Windows 98 pc had some Asus nForce athlon mainboard, 15gb quantum fireball hdd and 256mb ram if remember correctly. Those were first I used internet with, used software, played games and other stuff. One point both of machines started suffer from technical issues. Windows 98 pc mainboard started suffer from bad capacitors and not sure what was issue was on win95 one. However back then hardware evolved rather quickly and did not feel good idea use money to repair old hardware, when cost could be worth newer faster hw. One point I got my first machine from dad which was quite fast for the time (Intel Pentium 4 2.80ghz, Asus P4P800 mainboard, Club3D ATI 9800 pro (later Gainward Geforce 6800GT 256mb AGP). That gave me proper access into computer world. I had windows 98 and XP and Ubuntu Linux on it. Was also first machine I did virtualisation on, I was curious from operating system history and wanted experience operating systems never experienced before. Virtual PC 2007 was main I used for a long time. Over time I also learnt hate Internet Explorer more and more and understood why many did not like it at all and started take step midigate it so would be ok for it existence. Fast forwarding last 6-8 years been kind of bouncing around. During that time I had more focus on getting work done with software I was forced to use personal system, operating systems worsened. Touch screen UI forced to desktop, ads by default everywhere on UI etc. Also felt was last person who did not want upgrade to newer OS. World changed too fast for me. In short my Pentium 4 fell out of use and XP, 98 were only used on vm sometimes Later I really started to miss Windows XP and other operating systems on native OS. Windows 7 was ok, but lacked that simple and safe feeling (though had it more than Windoze 8+ that felt like downloading adwares to machine). First I got dell Optiplex 755, that served as XP machine around half from year, then friend on one previous workplace mentioned he had some parts on closet he could sell after I mentioned was looking mainboard. I got pretty good XP rig then (Asus M2N SLI Deluxe, Nvidia 8800gt, Phenom-x4). I felt very good to be back on XP, but felt wanted go older. But enough of XP lets go to 9x part Around 3.5-4 years ago (Wont remember for sure) I got Digital Venturis 466 with 486DX2-66 cpu, 8mb ram and 500mb hdd. I upgraded ram to 68mb and hdd to 20gb with dynamic disk overlay since had no smaller and installed Windows 95. That machine was and still is amazing, durable and assembled England according sticker. It served my need for older games, but I wanted 3d accerelation, but it only had ISA slots. 3 years ago I got that Pomi that story I mentioned at https://msfn.org/board/topic/177106-running-vanilla-windows-98-in-2020-and-beyond/?do=findComment&comment=1205090 Still was not fully satisfied, I wanted CRT and classic keyboard with Windows keys. Keyboard I got from same place as Pomi. I also got Windows 98SE finnish CD from there with other install disks and floppies from there. Before only had Windows 98 First edition. It was Microsoft Internet keyboard, that I use still. Around year ago I wanted reduce footprint of my Windows 98 install with 98lite. All was fine until messed up registry and restored too old backup that required reinstall. I made clean small Windows 98SE install. That point I started use Windows 98 seriously. One thing I wanted was connect to internet. Most obvious was use Firefox 2, but that had issues connecting sites due obsolete TLS and broken web standards. I tried Kernel EX, but it felt to break more than did good so decided to stick with vanilla Windows 98. I quickly got impression everyone in retro communities though connecting Windows 98 to internet (it is not internet it is lan passing traffic trough firewalled gateway to internet on me) was insane, because all hackers would come and hijack my system. Sadly none of vintage or retro forums were not suited to me and wanted find forum with members wanting keep legacy stuff alive. Then I ended up looking some things on MSFN and it felt right one, but did not register, because felt would never have anything to contribute there and had no time to hang on boards or anywhere else. Then Covid came to play and was left to home doing nothing almost a year like most and had more time play with projects I love and was no more required force use some annyoing software so could upgrade OS i liked as daily drive (98, XP, Vista). It was like hitting wall on speed. Had change stop and think world and what really wanted Then one point my dad asked if wanted something from my old machine and I was surprised, dad had kept it around like most of my other stuff. I felt so happy my dad did not throw/gave stuff away without asking from me first if needed. I got most of childhood things intact. I used lost of effort to restore my first machine like new and more effort will be used. I have special bondage to that machine. I even got original ATI 9800 to it still. Also around that point I finally decided join MSFN forums. Here I learnt bunch of cool XP and Windows 9x software like New moon and Retrozilla and patched Netscape 9 and CSS fixes that made browsing modern web somewhat usable. And found all great peoples who had goal that idea, keep fighting against windmills to keep operating system they like good on daily use and had actual knowledge from things. Sure lot we share different thoughs on things, but most share same basic ideologies. And I was wrong from not having anything to contribute to community. Going three months backwards I traveled to meet few friends in other side of Finland and got all type of cool stuff from them. Friend had salvaged two CRT monitors along with other stuff from building that was going to be torn down and wanted give 2x of those monitors to me. I also got Compaq Presario 5000 (820mhz celeron, nvidia tnt2 riva), bunch of old Nokia phones (3330, 6110, 5110, E90, 880, 3210 etc.), bunch of classic Windows game titles, most for Windows 98. 2x 90s notebooks (Digital Hinote and Compaq Armanda with Pentiums). One of those friend gave all that for free, because he no longer lives in Finland and was not worth take all aboard where he had similar stuff already and rather gave them to someone they knew. I had bags full of stuff when got home from there. Then fast forwarding to this day I am writing long post here and moved to new area (in middle of nowhere with deep forest next to me) and got new workplace that I like. Also finally got room to use all machines properly. All systems I mentioned expect Dell 755 (it got good home for someone who needed it more than me now) are still used day to day. I am waiting build shelve, so can connect my 486 now running Windows 3.11 OEM that original HDD had. Now got My first pc, Pomi and Compaq Presario 5000 hooked into KVM switch to my 17" Diamondtron CRT. Also I rock on old monochrome brick Nokia, that I wanted as kid, but never got so good that way too. So despite world turned crazy I was able find good things out of it and enjoyed best could from times That was bit lenghty post, but that is how I ended up back to Windows 98 scene. For me Windows XP and even more Windows 98 is safe and familiar desktop environment, that feels place I am alone isolated from world with full control over things, that is what modern OS (Expect linux partially) fails to deliver. I will give my Pomi nice troughly cleanup, new quality fan for gpu and maybe more storage space and if find good usb and audio header will give that too. Likely I am not only who has been going trough many phases before ended back to scene. And I am most likely here to stay. Lets keep Windows 98 alive
  7. Now well wait until Microsoft will release Windows 12 and start hype it like crazy how it will revolutionize computing forever and is way better than Windows 11 . Then soon after it they will release windows 13 that will be unlucky release resulting MS go bankrupt because it requires quantum computer (that is only to load desktop that will still lag) that are not consumer market and google and others who got one refuses touch MS software on supercomputer . I am afraid Microsoft will jump to rapid release bandwagon and start bumping Windows version way Apple and Google does with IOS/Macos/ChromeOS/Android. F-91W is still best watch ever. It is dirt cheap and does what most new watches fails to, show me what time is it
  8. funny that someone pulls vista card on a table again when talking problems with Windows 11 or other new windows. I did run vista RTM back in day on 2.80ghz Pentium 4, Nvidia 6800gt and 1GB of ram. That hardware rolled out before Vista, but run Windows vista smoothly and only issue with ram was if I did too much multitasking. Startup was rather quick and programs were relatively responsive. Also back in day most had 1gb of ram and 2gb started to be on newer notebooks. 4gb was what some hardcore games used and 8gb was on high end workstations for most parts. Even when Windows 7 came out many notebooks had 2gb ram still. Also I can install Windows Vista into my Pentium 3 with 512mb RAM and it does not whine "you need TPM chip for no good reason or you cannot run this". It is not most optimal, but with tweaking it can be made usable considering I made Windows XP working well on 260mhz Celeron. yes it does. I even run Windows 98 on 486 with 32mb ram and was decent in performance despite heavy IE shell which could be solved with 98lite. I run Windows 98 day to day on 800mhz Pentium 3 and it flies. well higher resource usage by bloatware makes them slower. Sure there is kernel level performance improvement, but it is like fiat punto engine on truck, fails to get the job done
  9. you can if got support for hardware virtualisation. I have run 64bit devuan linux inside XP using virtualbox
  10. Did you end up using downgrade mods to any games? I remember those to exist atleast for doom3. They allowed even lower quality graphics. Doom3 was able to run much slower hardware with it. It was not pleasant experience though. I got two 17" crt tubes for free, well price was take them from other side of finland with other stuff to my home. Was one fun trip though. One is Acer Aceview 77e/Mistubishi Diamondview 1772ie with Diamondtron picture tube that I use as main and second was Acer monitor that tube manufacture I am not too sure since have not taken apart. Likely it is cheap one since picture is very dim. I could try look if can manually pot adjust or find other faulty part than electron gun (note, do not take crt apart unless know what doing). Diamondtron one is great though. And I agree CRT to be unique experience starting from degauss coil making nice donk sound on power up to picture showing up slowly in few seconds until tube is hot, which is part of crt experience. Sadly decline for CRT seems to be too strong. LCD has it advantages, but so does crt. LCD is good for generic use like browsing web and using documents. CRT in other hand is good for gaming, because no matter resolution, game wont look pixelated, good for multimedia. I was watching few old commercials and CRT and was able see new elements on video that never did before. No technology been able do CRT like image. Also ability lower resolution without stuff showing pixelated allows extend use of obsolete hw.
  11. to be honest those two are nothing like Windoze Orwell build 1984 I mean windows 11. Neither of those did not cry I need internet when installed it. Sure vista had activation but atleast it did download tons of adveritisin junk during end phase of setup ignoring user may be behind metered or slow connection. And to be fair for ME and Vista both had improvements over previous versions. ME added system restore, had decent video editor software by default, built in mass storage drivers, was first to have proper protocol for scanners and cameras (WIA) which felt like heaven over TWAIN. Sure there was IE with adversiting when launched, but that feels zero compared what these days And vista added native MTP support, had improved memory management, had Windows Media center built in which was daily use for years (shame ms ignored need of european cable tv freqs). Also having search on start menu without downloading internet results (again ignoring connection) that just showed files on hdd made use of computer much easier on work. Windoze Orwell build 1984 I mean windows 11 only had new artificial hardware requiments, more spyware, less user control, more ads. This is not personal and you did not use that argument but I hate keep hearing argument "it is like <some version of windows here> when something is wrong on new one to silence any critic. Well you are speaking to person who had (still has) hard time accepting internet Exploiter on Windows and believes ads has no space on any operating system. After I was able midigate Internet exploiter security issues and it advertising features for good, I though finally have good config, but no Microsoft decided release Windows 8 10 and 11 that made those issues 10000x worse. Issue why this keep happening is because companies like Microsoft and Apple and even some projects like Linux got some blindly loyal fans who defend their precious products no matter what. I am pretty sure if Microsoft would come smash your computer with sledgehammer "for your benefit" Microsoft fans would still defend it as good decision. When will consumers understand companies are not their friend or care from them and it is not bad to judge them. Companies see you as walking wallet
  12. This might sound stupid but is machine part of any domain? Does it use custom WSUS server? Check group policy Second did you try upgrade older Windows 10 build from USB? I think you need to 2004 first and then can go 20h2. I rarely upgrade Windows 10 outside domain, but issue is usually too old build and need update manually until get new enough.
  13. That is just finnish honesty (In case you did not know Linus Torvalds is originally Finnish, just moved to states). Saying straight what you think from something is what many here likes to do.
  14. That reminds me that when time evolves in order keep these systems, we need to learn maintain all ourself. Behind are good old days when there was many third party service center around every town and repairing broken equipment to get extra out from it was normal. Luckily I have some relatives and friends who are better solder than me if ever need cap replacing. I hope wont need. I always was average to solder. I am better to work with anything solder free on hardware. I really hope wont need new caps anytime soon. DOS was good/bad in my opinion. Good was direct hardware access that allowed to make very well optimised software and games under DOS. Bad was no multitasking and no memory protection. One bogus application took whole thing down and had keep spamming crlt+alt+delete or reset. Windows 1 and 2 expect 386 one were mostly dos Shells. Windows 3.1 on 386 mode was what I could call OS. That was kinda horrible configure if had any network or cd drive. Many drivers refused to work on upper memory areas filling 640kb rather quickly. And trying run anything on Windows 3.1 that was 386 mode could result out of memory error. Windows 95 was built top of dos, but it had 32bit cd, network and other driver support so dos drivers were not that needed. Most of time something took down my 9x setup it was bogus dos program running on Windows. That is why I like exit to dos mode to run them Windows NT improved memory protection preventing that crashing but it is trade between perfromance, compability and stability that user must choose. NT based Operating systems were mostly chose by companies needing stable system and were not depend on MS-DOS applications
  15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq97tTeGl14 a friend of mine linked this video to me. That actually surprised me because did not know there has been any large shutdown of teletext service. Ironic is that BBC was first to use teletext and then kill it. On here teletext is still provived by Yleisradio OY (Public Radio company) and MTV3. YLE teletext shows weather, planes arriving/taking off times news, radioation levels per area (useful in case of emergency) and lot more. I use it daily. It is also just text based so no useless clutter like on internet mostly and news shows what really matter not useless stuff to increase read time for ad revenue If you ask me Teletext does not equal to internet or Hybrid TV services. What if internet goes down? No more Hybrid TV services or internet news. Teletext works as long as got DVB-C DVB-T or DVB-T2 signal here so good in emergencies. There is actually 112 channel that shows any emergencies on YLE teletext. Internet cannot magically replace Teletext and fill it hole. Also it requires new end device and wont work oobe on my or anyone else old TV. This question mostly applies to european members, but does anyone else here use/used to use Teletext services and what channels in your home country provides it? I drop pic from our live weather on YLE teletext here.
  16. Are you planning use it on laptop or desktop? If answer is laptop I know one model that will work under Windows 98SE. I have not found driver yet, but it listed Windows 98SE as offically supported. I got one of them and model is Sony Ericson GC85 Edge card. It is triple band so as long as Poland (if flag is right) got 900 or 1800 or 1900mhz band for GSM it will work just fine. Another on go soluction is depending your wireless handheld telephone device (phone in short) is to use it as modem. Atleast older Siemens and Nokia phones until around 2004 or so had offical modem drivers for Windows 98SE. Depending model can use either IR, bluetooth (if got 9x compatible bt card) or data cable. They can generally achieve 43-100kbp/s speed which is not fastest, but fine for me on a road. Here operator killed older UTMS bands and in two years rest of UTMS bands are closed. Next goes 2g I guess and that point Finland which used to country highly developed in mobile technology will roll back to era where most had no phones. That point I may redirect all of my calls to answer machine that says. "Unfortunately person you tried to reach cannot use his phone because operator shut down GSM band and does not offer him landline. If you want contact owner of the number, please first call to operator number and tell them how stupid decision was to kill essential services." Also edge/gprs speed is not that slow depending how you tweak your software. I use email over IMAP with offline folders, use WTTR.IN to check weather, block js by default. On road edge/gprs works just fine. Back in day before web turned to bloat 100kb/s was luxury I did not have
  17. I do same but no as wide list. Mypal is my main browser but I sometimes use Otter browser and Retrozilla and sometimes more minimal netsurf or most minimal Lynx when feel like I do not want anything but text.
  18. Well atleast you aware of problems and not some Windows 11 diehard who will eat me alive because do not like it at all. I have my reasons to hate it and you have reasons to like it on some level and both are fine to me. Some like something some do not. If it work for user and they are fine something else works for someone else it is fine for me. And that speculation purpose was not personal. It was rather overall. I see sad trend of moving all to cloud from local drives and ignoring any user who do like it. Also Microsoft sells Windows 365 these days that is cloud OS. They use it as "accessible everywhere" why better than local client. It is like going back to monochrome terminals connected to mainframe. Also what if internet goes down? No more access to your clould computer. If I would need system accessible anywhere I would buy small lightweight notebook and carry that with me. Sadly most consumer do not even care from it and try force it to everyone like you notice. As for update thing, it has been frustrated thing to begin with on Windows 10 and 11. You got all perfectly in desktop MS does system update and all tweaks might be gone. My work machine loves to do that to me. I will be stubborn one who refuse go to Windows 10/11 and will hang on 7/xp/98. I have made decision Linux despite it issues. And if Linux goes worse since company contributions (systemd as worst example) I move to bsd or stop most of internet related tasks overall. Today internet there is not lot to see compared 10 or 20 years ago. I pretty much use MSFN and few others sites and otherwise prefer IRLChat in f2f mode. that explains it. I am using nMatrix that blocks javascripts and youtube is blacklisted on it. On future you could attach it as link too from top menu in case someone else cannot view it
  19. Just wait until Microsoft updates OS to either break layout for good or blocking hw support like they did with Windoze 10 I mean Windows 10 to some atom cpus. This point it would no longer surprise me. For me it is huge leap down the hill. Windows 8 with it cell phone UI was rolling down hill, Windows 10 was running down and Windows 11 was hitting bottom of it. I do not want to install tons of system extensions to operating system just to make it less painful to use. It should be by default. Also Microsoft shows complete middle finger to system administrators by adding more useless bloatware that need to be disabled. Internet explorer was bad already but atleast for most parts same settings worked without issue between versions when forced network wide. Microsoft store has no place on production network, neither does start menu advertising and auto downloaded bloatware. Those can be disabled, but are enabled by default and to disable them you need more expensive Enterprise edition of Windoze, that costs more money. Also new touch screen optimised start menu is pain configure remotely to domain machines. Windows 11 is same crap as Windows 10 with uglier UI and everybody praises it like god. Windows 11 only started new era on hw requiments and one that I call end of personal computing. In 5-10 years from here non locked down computers will be rare and even having data and os on local system instead of azure or other cloud is stupid to many and nobody sees problem with risks of having all data on cloud. And I am not some diehard linux or xp/98 fan. Windows XP and 98 had their problems, but were solid operating systems and atleast Microsoft listened system administrators by adding requested management features. Also even though I like linux I am aware it issues, but to fair Devuan Linux does not insult me by pushing ads to desktop and adding new panels or menus is super easy and NATIVE TO OPERATING SYSTEM. For me as system administrator control over stuff without lot of hassle is very important and that is why I hate most modern products that want limit what can I control P.S your image is not showing up. Did you accidentally delete it?
  20. Well remember that Mozilla gets funding from Google. Would not be surprised it there is data sharing contract between them. I have actually seperated Firewall (openwrt), Modem and LAN from each other. Modem has been configured to bridge mode so only works passing IP address to firewall. All I need unplug is modem and can have LAN without internet connectivity. Though my Windows 98 system wont call home all the time. well I happy my both Pentium 4 and Pentium 3 system and even my Core2duo laptop lacks that or AMT. To atleast partially fix it if got newer board @Dixelgave advice use external nic without intel chipset and that seems work on few test systems. so big G themself cannot trust propieraty firmware they push consumers on smartphone to trust. Also even NSA or other goverment organisations do trust ME. some areas you have no choice but use operator modem. Luckily I was able get AVM cable modem and mod it to act as bridge (ethernet port passtrough). It was expensive (200 euros) and used long time to get hash right to enable hidden lan bridges. After it had to configure OpenWRT to raspberry PI 4 to handle network between wan and lan. Also my ISP offer 5 public IP so can have one for services like web or file server and one to isolated LAB network where can do stuff without risking main network. I do have long list of software and operating systems and hardware I forbid to connect on home network. I got no wifi either. All wired
  21. your operating system is evil. Just get free ram to 666mb and you will summon Bill Gates demon
  22. but imagine all those sweet potato quality avi videos you could fit into that . Well in all seriousness even 128gb ssd is overkill for Windows 98 with lot of software and media. Did so because my old drive and finding working 120gb or smaller hdd is hard here. Bios limit is 137gb.
  23. for me asking anything outside email mean I am not welcome to the site. Unless site is goverment or teleoperator site meant to manage my personal subscribtion or data cannot see reason to need anything else than email.
  24. good to know. I guess I avoid it like a plague. I need direct x 8 for few games. Maybe if had late win9x hardware it would be ok. I noticed had less graphic related issues on dx8 than dx9 installed on 98. Had illegal processes when closing games on few installs until had direct x 8 installed. Very interesting problem. I guess it did not work on one chipset. If Windows 98 detects drive on first phase it might be able do copy part without issues and if lucky may even be able boot into desktop. If not R. Loew sata patch will likely work.
  25. forced av install will break stuff. What if user runs older version of Windows or BSD or other OS that cannot run that AV? I guess next sites start asking taking clone of your hard drive without encryption and all personal documents and mailing it to them so they can verify you got no viruses. Consider some sites want your ID already would not be surprised from that.
