  1. Good to hear you got Sandboxie working @Vistapocalypse . I couldn't recall if SB 5.26 was working before I installed the Meltdown/Spectre patches, but looking back at my posts, apparently it was . I have dozens of SB installers saved locally. If you want, I can upload the 32bit installer for 5.26, and you can see if that works instead of the combined one. I really wouldn't worry using any of the older 5.2x releases. The last known security vulnerability was patched in v.5.04, and AFAIK any updates since, were for compatibility issues. So unless you run into those, you should be fine. Although you haven't confirmed, I get the gist that you passed on the Meltdown/Spectre patches. If so, possibly this may be your issue with recent versions of SB?. Can't be 100%, but I doubt 7-Zip would cause any major hiccups. Barb's reply in the thread you linked to was spot on. There was a time, back in v.4 when MS Visual C++ redistributable libraries were installed as a separate download, but that was short lived. I was still using v3.76 back then, and by the time I eventually upgraded, v.4.16 had since been released, and the separate VC download no longer needed. So I've never had to have a separate MS Visual C++ Redistributable installed for SB to work, but IIRC, when I replaced the graphics card on my Vista system recently, the Nvidia driver did install a VC Redistributable. I'll have to check. This was before I upgraded SB to v5.30, though I doubt it made a difference. Can't say I've ever heard of any .NET Framework requirements for SB, always just had the default .NET 2 & 3 here. No harm in trying an Upgrade Install with 5.24, if it doesn't work out, you can easily downgrade again using the same method with the 5.22 installer. Should be straightforward, and quick. - Ruan

  7. Well, it seems Vista's Automatic Update servers are alive & well. Had a bit of time today, and installed Vista HP SP1 in a VM. First check for updates took only a few minutes, and returned ~100 updates. This was with no pre-installed SHA-2 or Speedup updates installed. Second check returned ~15 non-security updates, and the third check, even less. Let the system sit idle for about an hour, and checked again. This time i was offered SP2. And after that, Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256. This is when AU decided to start with the old endless search. I finally gave up after 70 mins, and rebooted. Went ahead and manually installed the updates recommended by Dalai at http://wu.krelay.de/en/Vista.htm to speedup the AU process. Next check only took about 5-7 mins and returned ~160 updates. Installing those now as I'm posting this.
  8. Was just curious, really. In the past WU would always display a few unwanted plus hidden updates when checked...now zilch. If the update servers have ceased, then it will no doubt make updating any future clean install that more cumbersome.
  9. I don't use any security software besides Sandboxie, so can't really recommend any particular AV. When Invincia owned SB, their recommendation was always "Windows Defender / Essentials". Now, of course, with the new owners - Sophos AV. A most likely outdated thread from the old SB forum discussing Compatible or non-compatible Antivirus / Anti-malware No more than anybody else, I'm afraid. There was news of an upcoming announcement, but that was over 2 weeks ago. Official Sandboxie Status Update [Last updated May 22nd] Not sure where you are with updates, but if your system is pre-Meltdown/Spectre updates, then an older version of SB (v.5.22?, v.5.24?) might be more compatible. Just a thought. https://www.sandboxie.com/AllVersions Could just be, as you mentioned earlier, a SB/ Avast conflict, they've had issues before.
  10. Hey, Folks! Finally got my Vista system back running again after nearly 4 months. Anyhow, just thought I'd pop by and post how updating went. May 2019 KB4474419 SHA-2 code signing support KB4499180 pcicompatforserialnumber IE-KB4498206 .NET (KB4498964) KB4495609 Jun 2019 KB4474419 SHA-2 code signing support V2 IE-KB4503259 KB4503287 Jul 2019 KB4507461 IE-KB4507434 .NET KB4506975 Aug 2019 KB4512491 IE-KB4511872 KB4517301 (fix for the VB/VBA/VBScript bugs) All installed without issue. So far, so good. P.S. Have MS stopped offering updates through Windows Update? Did a couple of checks earlier, and after about 10 secs, I get the all clear - "Windows is up to date / There are no updates available for your computer".
  11. Hi, @Vistapocalypse , Apologies for being MIA these past few months. My Graphics Card bit the dust on my Vista system at the end of April, and I've been spending most free time since, on a Win 7 lappy, brushing up on Linux in prep for what seems an inevitable move come next January. Anyhow, I'm finally bought a replacement card and am backup and running. Just finished installing the last 4 months Win updates. With all the uncertainty going on with Sandboxie atm, plus the reports of license activation issues, I wasn't in any rush to update - but went ahead anyway. Happy to report all went smoothly, Sandboxie 5.30 on Vista HP x86, running perfect. RE; your SB issue, have you tried re-installing per the advice from your link above. It looks initially like the SB driver didn't install. Is SbieDrv.sys present in program files/ sandboxie? Have you still got Shade installed? Any other security software besides Avast? Can you open notepad.exe Sandboxed?
  12. AKA, the only one around these parts running Sandboxie on Vista . Appreciate the title though . Still with FF52 ESR, for the time being. Been playing with roytam1's Serpent and New Moon lately though. No problems with either in Sandboxie, so far. Sorry for taking so long to reply.

  14. Hi @Vistapocalypse Just updated to Sandboxie v5.28 a few minutes ago. System is Vista HP x86, updated to April 2019. All is working well.
  15. @DanR20 @Mathwiz @VistaLover Thank you very much for the info, it's been very helpful . Just wondering also, what's the proper procedure for updating Serpent without losing custom tweaks and Addons? And, does the above mean the current release of Serpent/moebius is less secure than FF 52.9.0 ESR? Thanks.
  16. Hi, I'm currently running FF 52.9.0 ESR on Vista HP x86, and starting to worry with FF being so outdated. I've been looking at both browsers below, but not sure which one I should be using. Serpent/moebius for XP! http://o.rths.cf/basilisk/basilisk55-win32-git-20190330-09b851794-xpmod.7z Serpent/UXP for XP! https://o.rths.cf/basilisk/basilisk52-g4.1.win32-git-20190330-843e4ceff-xpmod.7z What's the difference between the two? Is one more secure than the other? The UI for basilisk55 looks better on Vista, but security is my prime concern. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. @roytam1 Huge thanks for all your hard work, and time .
  17. @mike_shupp Thanks for your reply, and sorry for taking so long to get back to you. @Vistapocalypse gave me a good tip that maybe kb4338380 won't install due to earlier Meltdown and Spectre patches I'd skipped (they broke Sandboxie on my system). Gave them another try with an updated Sandboxie (v5.26), and here's where I'm at now: March 2018 KB4089229, KB4090450 These were the original updates that broke Sandboxie (SB). Now installed and working with SB 5.26. April 2018 KB4093478 This one also broke SB, but has since been superseded by updates in Jun,Aug 2018 - installed fine, SB working. July 2018 KB4340583 Never tested this one against SB, but it was superseded by KB4341832 in Aug - installed, and SB working. Aug 2018 KB4338380 Unfortunately, still getting - "This update does not apply to your system". I'm not overly worried atm though, it's currently marked by MS as "Exploitation Less Likely". I'll give it another look next month. On the upside, I'm now fully patched up to Aug, minus KB4338380, which might very well be replaced down the road. Kinda more pleased right now with the Sandboxie fiasco fixed. Thanks @mike_shupp , and @Vistapocalypse for your help.
  18. @Vistapocalypse Yeah, Sandboxie 5.26 (latest version) has been working good so far. Thanks for the advice re: the Meltdown and Spectre patches. I've been meaning to test them again since I updated Sandboxie. Probably best to post my results over on the Server 2008 Vista Updates thread.
  19. Many thanks @Sampei.Nihira . FF 52 ESR stopped updating NS at v5.1.8.4. I would have missed this update had it not been for your post, and this thread . @WinClient5270 , Huge thanks also, for creating and maintaining this awesome thread! And the same to those who've contributed to it .
  20. Thanks @greenhillmaniac . I wish MS had stayed with individual updates, makes it a lot easier to avoid a single problematic update, if one comes up. From now on, it's either all or none . @All Anyone else have a problem with kb4338380 (Aug 2018)? I'm getting a "Doesn't apply to your system" when I try to install. I think @Chronius reported something similar earlier, but those posts have since been deleted. I unpacked the update, and according to the text file inside, it seems to apply to Vista systems.
  21. @greenhillmaniac Are you missing KB4339291 & KB4339854 in July's updates? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4339291/security-update-for-security-feature-bypass-vulnerability-in-windows https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4339291 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4339854/win32k-elevation-of-privilege-vulnerability-in-windows https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4339854 Edit: I forgot KB4340007 (.NET) Security Only update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 4.5.2, and 4.6 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4340007/security-only-update-for-net-framework-2-0-sp2-3-0-sp2-4-5-2-and-4-6-f https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4340007 ------------- Thanks again for keeping your repository updated :) .
  22. @JodyT , I'm still holding off on January's patches. This month's updates have been a huge mess. I need to transfer a lot of data off my system first, and make a system image , before I'm going to attempt anything. Steve Gibson has just released a handy little tool, InSpectre (portable), you might find interesting. https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm --------------------------- Found another January Server 2008 update, released on the 12th. No mention of it at any of the usual places. Just by chance I was browsing Microsoft Update Catalog earlier, and came across it. I really wish MS would get their act together (Sigh!). 23. January 9th 2018 Updates After last weeks out-of-band updates, there's not a lot for this month's Patch Tuesday. Just .NET updates by the look of it. 24. Hi greenhillmaniac, Seems MS just updated your link today, for 2018. Each month, MS also release a new Security update deployment information web page, which is pretty helpful. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20180109/security-update-deployment-information-january-9-2018 Ghacks too, provide a good guide of the updates available every patch Tuesday. Thanks for keeping your repository updated, btw.
