  1. Hi.. you don't mention what OS if any, you have installed on the laptops & if you have a router, nic, usb on the desktop & laptops-- so assuming you have no cabling or networking options & you don't wish to have to spend extra: here's detailed method: http://www.winnetmag.com/Forums/messagevie...threadid=128803 Or, they sell what's called hard drive enclosures for usb and/or firewire-- bootable / ready to go: stick any hard drive in them & you're set to copy: http://www.usbgear.com/USB+firewire+enclosure+combo/ dón't mind the price for that combo model-- you can find others for ½ of that price: http://www.xpcgear.com/enclosures.html or bootable flash storage-- instructs for that here: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/5735 good luck...... edit: if you need further clarification, feel free!
  2. Fantastic!! PS I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong, but if you ever think you're getting more than the usual amount of corrupted downloads-- in particular zipped archives- I've seen this happen with : overheating(failed internal fans), ram problems, hard disk about to go. Just call me paranoid... Al the best to you!
  3. some ideas: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319585/EN-US/ http://members.bellatlantic.net/~mrscary/winupfaq.htm http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ Interesting app....... You could also run the autopatcher-- just got updated-- tell it to overinstall / answer yes at every file replace prompt: this may repair any damaged/corrupted file causing a problem..........
  4. Yeah, i meant from the point of view of apps(likely resource hoggers) we regular / square consumers would need install to get the effects/results of the various hakz you just metioned.......
  5. What's in that attachment? The link to MS WU troubleshooter? edit: I get it--
  6. I figure this'll tide us over until about 2 years into Longhorn release.......
  7. Tihiy you are some talent-- esp. because this won't extract a resource-usage penalty.
  8. Nice to see she's more important than us The best thing I would recommend for you is the combo fix(from both Scary & MS-- slightly different details) of deleting the windows update, msdownload, & related folders, files & Acbive X(Windows Update will subsequently re-download & fix all that)... you won't damage anything: think of it as with Outlook Express: when your inbox gets damaged, you just delete it and a new one gets rebuilt w/ losing any data-- and btw that has happened to lots of us at one time or another. I have this app as a backup for that: BigFix it will give you all your updates in the meantime, just like windows update-- even though SESP has all of them, maybe something didn't install correctly. And fyi: SESP has an uninstall entry in add/remove "Unofficial xxxxxxxxxx" Though I'm not suggesting that's needed-- we all use it-- i've had no problems with all previous of its versions on several computers. PS for the other thing, you may also find this page & site helpful: http://www.usbman.com/Guides/Error%20Codes%20Explained.htm .
  9. Let's see: You could both two these two things: MS TweakUI / Boot / AutoRun Scandisk without prompting.... AND-- do a Find for scandisk.exe(i know it's in Windows\Command, but just in case you have an extra copy elsewhere & something in your Path statement causes that one to run instead) & for all copies each: right-click / Properties / Program / Cmd Line: add /autofix related: X-Setup / Startup/Shutdown\Startup\Windows 9x/Me\30) Scandisk\ScanDisk Logging has some logging options you might use. Hopefully that will work........
  10. Hi: the fix your computer clock & date is only one of several possible fixes(so we need the exact error mesage, as Gape said)-- Some fixes here(scroll down): http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:xuf0A...te+errors&hl=en MS fix(use it in conjunction w/ Scary's tips in bottom of his page): Windows 98 Display hidden files 1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Folder Options. 2. Click the View tab. 3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK. Delete Temporary Internet Files 1. Close all programs and all Internet Explorer windows. 2. In Control Pane, double-click Internet Options. 3. Click the General tab. 4. Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files. 5. Click OK. 6. Close Control Panel. Restart for the changes to take effect. Delete files from the Windows Update folder 1. On the Windows desktop, double-click My Computer, double-click drive C, double-click the Program Files folder, and then double-click the WindowsUpdate folder. 2. Click the V4 folder, click Edit, click Invert Selection, and then press DELETE. Note If you cannot find the V4 folder, click Edit, click Select All and then press DELETE. Skip steps 3 and 4. 3. Double-click the V4 folder. 4. Click the Iuhist.xml file, click Edit, click Invert Selection, and then press DELETE. Remove the Windows Update ActiveX Controls 1. Click Start, click Find, and then click For Files or Folders. Search for the files named iuctl.dll and Iuengine.dll. 2. Delete all copies of these files. 3. Visit the Windows Update Web site to install new copies of the ActiveX controls. Other possible causes: try testing/disabling your firewall & any real-time file protector(just get any new ones, change any settings there?) popup blocker(did you just get a new one / enable popups there), your java camaged/corrupted, your ie security settings set to high, block all cookies, scripts, active x, etc.(did you just make any changes in that area?) your MS installer is damaged: Let us know......
  11. MS 'hopes' to switch the world over from Java to 'Visual'.... And the Java interfacing situation has done a complete about-face: years ago the Sun Java didn't work at many sites-- one had to have MS Java; now i see sometimes sites that require Sun & using the MS version doesn't work.....
  12. Hi, get rid of that dll-- it can cause problems on your system. That problem may be solved by installing updated drivers, and for sure if you apply the following solution: What happens is that the Secure Software is not compatible with 9x platform. Since that drive is not staying there & is going back to your other system, look for an autorun.inf file in it, and rename it( both name & extension to be sure--it auto-launches the not-compatible-with-your-system Secure Software), and rename it back when you return it to your other system. If it was going to permanently stay on the win9x system, then you could delete that file, the whole Secure Software Folder, format it..... Let us know........
  13. It just so, so needs to be included in the 10toSE..
  14. Sorry-- i assumed you had installed SESP v1.6.... 2 is better: http://ftp.mdgx.com/spx/SP20RC1.EXE afterwards, the sp1.cab will become default install location where windows looks for any system files.....
  15. free: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
  16. I would install version 2 of SESP-- i think it changed/updated usb system files. Then, remove that device-- when you go to install the drivers for it, point the wizard to windows\system\precopy\sp1.cab -- once that's done, update that driver by pointing to the location with your Orange Micro drivers(2.1.11.1 is latest version btw ftp://download.orangemicro.com/USB2/Setup.exe )-- see if that helps...... an alternative to pointing to sp1.cab is if your motherboard has usb controller drivers-- maybe labeled 1.1(which will have also the windows system files for usb... extract to a folder, run the setup, & point wizard to that location if it can't find a file. )-- i suspect those never made it out of the cab files from the windows install disc....and the ones provided in SESP(sp1.cab) may or may not do the trick-- depending on your system...... Good Luck. BTW any particular file not found during install process, you may have to help the wizard & perform a Find-- if that yields nothing, use the Text Search option and look in cab files in the drivers folders, sp1.cab, and the cabs in the windows install directory either on cd or a folder with a name like win98 on your hard drive, in case your pcmaker didn't provide a disk & instead burned the contents to your hard drive. .
  17. Notice the website also recommends this: -- something i've always pushed: the latter has a sister app SpywareGuard....., which i use instead IN Combo with Spybot Immunize.
  18. Adding a couple of suggestions to Killer Replacements, for the Service Pack also: I also find very useful Target & Content from the w95 Power & Kernel Toys-- no problems btw on any 98 system, nor even installing after ME shell.... (for those wondering: click any folder/file shortcut/icon on desktop-anywhere, and see a cascading list of contents of its folder, start explorer open to its parent directory, etc. Speaking of-- how about this one, which I couldn't get to work btw: http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/scripts7.html send to quick launch bar(create shortcut)-- not just plain send to, which makes a copy of the app there; & much better than sending to desktop & then dragging down.
  19. Depending on mobo/chipset, Intel also had, besides the drivers, and the Application Accelerator, an INF utility-- extra instructions for the processor re agp, usb, pci, etc.... I'd guess likely you've done that: just covering all bases. Done the usual: manually trying to assign a letter in Device Manager(it's listed there?) / Properties, installed mobo drivers, no exclamation points there, tested another peripheral in the usb, switched pci slots, Was it the updated SESP? Try removing both usb installs from Device Manager & reboot: let windows detect. If it doesn't I'd this time re-install usb2 last. Could be an issue of enabling dma in ALL these locations: bios(this is a reach, but: ¿enabling legacy usb support??), windows, a jumper inside your case... This is also a reach, but you'll need it later anyhow(but ONLY if supported by your processor, memory & mobo-- if not, it may work initially, but eventually trash your data & install): in windows enable both 32-bit disk & file access, asynchronous mode transfer...
  20. I Definitely second Soldier1st-- that you won't have any more problems. btw I also had no windows update after some re-install eons ago-- i believe that was solved after applying a bunch of updates(which I had stored in computer--you double-checked add/remove windows components for any needed stuff?)
  21. in light of those on athlons, & to cover most popular codecs, this package could help(has most everything possible)-- users have given it high ratings: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Mega_...ck/1080441198/1
  22. HHmmm, they worked for me for sure in the 5 & 5.01 days.... unless if there are different versions of them.... In fact, it was with 5.5(sp2) & 6 that i began hating IE because of lost 'functionalities'(i know, unrelated-- but still...)...
  23. I've submitted it / you've got my vote for it to be included in the 98seWmp10 replacement...... maybe you can send it to MDGx via his site feedback button-- all this included in the 98se2me would make such an outstanding package... Maybe we can re-emphasize to catch others' attention: the following bitrates are setup for encoding and can be selected from the four 'Audio quality' settings in WMP9 (btw WMP10 apparently doesn't do 160 kBps) 64 kBps @ 22.050 Hz 128 kBps @ 44.100 Hz 160 kBps @ 44.100 Hz 192 kBps @ 44.100 Hz all encoding is 'joint stereo' by default, (and cannot be changed via the GUI ) this is the same as WMP10 in XP. album title, song name, artist, etc can be downloaded and added to ID3 tags automatically.
