  1. update on: when extracting zipped files(with a third party zip client) to windows folder(open receiving folder after extraction is enabled), a folder called WinME is opened in Explorer instead,,, now it opens to Desktop(this when extracting the new regenv)......
  2. same here Epic.... & i surf dubious sites for entertainment purposes, yet have never had a problem(meaning something not flagged right away by a security app & that a subsequent scan did not remove. Though, one type of place that is dastardly / overwhelming, is some sites that have text lyrics for songs-- Feel safer w/ Firefox too......
  3. Search/Find does not scan Windows Folder first, like 98's...... looks like it's done in alpha order.... New shutdown menu forces extra click...... & yes, creating shutdown shortcuts is fairly easy, but quicklaunch crowded.....& yes, increasing the width of quicklaunch is an easy option, but that decreases window screen space.... There is one quirk: when extracting zipped files(with a third party zip client) to windows folder(open receiving folder after extraction is enabled), a folder called WinME is opened in Explorer instead(it holds image of winme install disk, a few winme updates).... Musing: it'd be real useful if either a Tool Tip or Explorer Details provided file version-- save a lot of clicking.... i have InfoTag, which displays a highlighted file's info in status bar-- though not for all files & not convenient when comparing identical versions... btw that app is very useful: advanced file info popup, peer at first few lines of text files w/o opening, quickly run mouse over the various browser tabs in taskbar area-- those tool tips save a lot of time.... and the beat goes on.......
  4. Meant to mention that maybe a lot of the previously-mentioned stuff has probably been mentioned here separately/individually at one time or another????? Don't mean to steal any Zeus' thunder nor proclaim the invention of fire
  5. subset of nt4's: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../sp4rk_i386.Exe or: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/reskit/ (its sucky ftp froze/crashed Explorer-- & still won't allow access: no other ftp site yields similar results) win2k(individually): http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techi...ols/default.asp subset of 2k3 server's: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en office2k: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en officexp: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en office 2k3: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en for other apps: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results...layEnglishAlso= Reskits for unix/windows interoperability
  6. Not the exact answer you're seeking, but these can do it for you(they can replace windows notepad each has different strengths, depending on type of work: 1. NotePad2 2. EditPad 3. Programmers File Editor(works on nt platform even though it says win9x) see MDGx notes for more info--on those & a ton of others
  7. It's up to you: it can be as small as a couple gigabytes IF you are planning on migrating everything possible out of it-- which will also speed up your computer's performance. I'm also real interested on others' thoughts on this. This is what i'd do on a 2 disk setup(not exactly what i do, since i use 3/4 disks per system): Disk1: C: Winxp(2½-4½ GB) D: Program Files E: Image & Backup of Disk2 F: Miscellaneous/Hidden/Other OS/Extra for future, etc.) Disk2: G: Pagefile(4½ GB min size 1gb - no max or max 4½) H: Data ( log, document, setting, data, my xxx<pictures, music, etc>. folders(& their subfolders) from windows & all programs). Faves, Desktop, Start/Start Up, Send to...ps if you like to keep history(research?) cookies(auto logons?) they go here-- but if you frequently clear them, then they go in: I: Temp/Download(all temp, tmp, cache, TIF, folders from windows & all other programs, browsers, etc. and all download folders) J: Backup/Recovery/Restore/Install(Recovery Console, image of winxp cd, all backup<& various spellings of it> files/folders for all programs, backup of windows registry, image of Disk1 K: Miscellaneous Reasons/Theories: 1. Better to err on the side of extra partitions. 2. One disk or partition goes, you're up and running in no time, you can format any partition anytime you need w/o losing hardly anything, reinstall at will... 3. Pagefile must be the first partition(& by itself) of a separate & seldom-used hard disk to realize the full performance benefits: I myself have 4 disks on most systems-- pagefile & backup on one-- and prefer, also for performace considerations, to have OS, Programs, Data, Temp partitions each in separate disks. FYI windows will want to have its own a small pagefile on its own partition for its own use, in addition to the migrated one-- let it do this-- you can set min/max for it: say 4½ MB to 48 MB. (Another factor re the size & settings for the page partition is that windows likes to create all sorts of extra tmp/dwnld/bckup/updte folders in other partitions that have plenty of empty space.) There's one app that's crucial & mandatory for migrating: COA-- it scans/edits all .ini, .lnk, .reg necessary changes everywhere. I've used TweakUI(& other apps), then run this app & usually find it catches missed stuff(accept to save the log file each time, but give it a distinctive name so it doesn't overwrite-- you may want it for documentation, reversing, etc.) Do you need to do all that? I do a lot of database & neural network work.... But if you're heavily into games, music & videos, it would help squeeze extra performance out of your system..... Good Luck.
  8. edit: guys, he's got considerable problems(another thread)-- i don't think repair or over-install would help. Problem is if something's corrupted or you have malware-- don't have a satisfactory answer for your current predicament. Only thing i know is for avoiding that predicament again: make several partitions, windows in one by itself(nothing else, do not allow any other apps or any of their folders to be placed there), with every single possible folder migrated out of there: all data, documents, download, my xxx, history, cookies, favorites, Temporary Internet Files, desktop(& its subfolders), start, Start menu, send to, windows updates, .... Program Files too-- they and all other programs should be in their own separate parttion-- in case they pick up a bug... all the other data, documents, patches, & settings folders should be on their own-- these are less likely to either have a parasite or have a damaged file causing problems-- & you don't want to be losing them when having to reinstall(& maybe format) programs. This way, you'd just backup registry, format windows partition, reinstall, replace registry, & you'd be all set. Even then, this is no sure thing if the problem lies in the Registry, or in a folder outside windows, like Common Files, etc. & since you've gone this far<g>, besides a backup partition, two more: one for all temp, tmp, TIF, cache folders, another one for the pagefile all by itelf, nothing else with it-- your system will be much faster as a result(even better if you'd spread out on multiple hard disks). Again, so sorry not to have a proper answer for your current situation, hope you get a prompt solution.
  9. Thank you. I forgot one: DHCP (long hangs) Only DSL, not Cable. Stops hangs at startup and/or at times while surfing. The cause may be DHCP timeout. Windows will actively seek to find an IP address for the network adapter from an outside source before assigning it one of its own range of addresses at startup, and as well periodically attempts to detect it. In Network Properties highlight the network adapter bound to TCP/IP, click Properties - IP Address - select Specify an IP Address , enter 192.168.0.2 in first field & in Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 BTW a lot of that will soon be dated, w/ the coming upgrades of dsl; we'll need to worry less & less about appliances interfering with the signal-- the wiring will be different....
  10. Maybe it's an XP bug or the program's not been sufficiently upgraded to work w/ XP--I don't use Reg Explorer anymore, but for years never had a problem---
  11. Off the top, I have an investment data subscription site that wants us to use Sun only-- likely to avoid spending time w/ tech support issues-- funny because I remember 3-5 years ago only MS Java worked at that same site. Broadband Reports seems to favor Sun: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5160
  12. find out what your correct mtu is for your isp(look it up here for pertinent/local insights for your area): http://www.dslreports.com/forums/all ) -- both too low or high slows you down. You can also determine it yourself: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=156 use Cablenut, but with update-- only use the CCS in Update Folder speed up firefox: http://forevergeek.com/open_source/make_firefox_faster.php fix some reg settings: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=158 and additional XP SP2 new issues: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497 get Treewalk explanation: http://ntcanuck.com/faq.htm a better ppp client than windows' or your isp's: http://www.raspppoe.com/ physical tweaks / fixes: http://www.homephonewiring.com/ http://dslnuts.com/DSLwiring.shtml http://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth?r=870 http://www.tweakxp.com/article140057.aspx keep dsl modem & wiring far, far away from computer, radios / stereo / speakers, microwave, refrigerators, tv, wireless phones, bluetooth, remotes, dimmer lighting wall switch, halogen lamps
  13. You said you can or you can't use autopatcher-- version 5 does contain sp2... spybot / adaware & AV found nothing serious(they each miss different stuff)? test ram: http://www.memtest86.com/ your hard disk maker will have a good diagnostic utility for it...... temps / psu ok?
  14. You're too funny ok-- forget the dell meisters, individual sellers / non-credit card accepters: License only various in the $60's 5 students or teachers altogether can pay $39.11 each if they buy it en masse(probably what you get at some of the individual sites): http://www.sparco.com/cgi-bin/wfind2?spn=A545613 For Bum / vagabond: $65 http://www.oem-software.org/?pid=350&cart=&page=winxppro Ditto: $70 http://www.techiko.com/index.asp?PageActio...WPROD&ProdID=62 $74 academic upgrade: http://www.iunitek.com/iunitek/index.cfm?f...cs∂=1005053 & here: http://www.provantage.com/buy-7msoa182-upg...61-shopping.htm For Bum / vagabond: $75 http://www.entrustresources.com/estore/cus...roductid=232090 $82 NewEgg--academic upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....N82E16837116192 $84.17 Pro-Full: http://triointernational.com/store/front/a...FTOKEN=20348364 This store is right near me-- anybody interested i can check it out, give you the key right away, upload it to you, put it up for downlaod on my site, snail mail-- no problemo. $109.99 Ditto: http://www.salesintl.com/product.asp?0=218&1=235&3=11 Ditto: $112 http://www.a2zcomp.com/buy.asp?REF=12&SKU=2713062
  15. Read the reviews-- high avg ratings on hundreds/thousands for each, how many years they've been on pricegrabber, etc. I have no problem recommendng anyone to most those sites, there's the pricegrabber guarantee, your credit card purchase protection, multiple years existence on pricegrabber for many of them--- look at all the negative reviews re CDW-- and then glance at the others: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...masterid=477480 If you're that worried, then just buy a license for @ the same amount-- and install w/ another cd....you can always verify w/ MS / reverse the charge............ buy a $1 cable to comply w/ the OEM terms.....
  16. you da man..... jaclaz... One can never be sure--Just about any solution chosen here can bring unexpected issues, or everything can turn out hunky dory: intalling the card & cdrom, connecting the computers together...... on to boot a no OS installed system.... xp & the older drivers/bios may have a tussle... trickytwista: kinda obvious, but hopefully you have any updated bios/drivers in hand... if you want us to look around, give us a model, serial or fcc id number....... Full speed ahead-- **** the torpedoes!!
  17. all lifetime win xp updates/patches, plus a bunch of system tweaks & popular third-party utilities: all in one single install. latest release info: http://www.neowin.net/forum/?showtopic=274125 home, not updated with just-released version yet: http://www.autopatcher.com/autopatcherxp.html Actually i assume you have done the obvious: chkdsk, SFC / scannow, MS knowledge base, run spybot/adaware/etc. that error could be anything: damaged system file, malware, there's one such issue re too many images in folders, fixed by one of the ms patches, another re too many fonts installed fixed by another hotfix(increases the font cache size), also shared/edited/deleted/multiple instances of shared folders worked on by multiple peopl w/ Office or the adobe Photo suites: disassociate Adobe products from being the default image app associated w/ the various format to fix one such issue. Bad Ram, overheating, hard disk problems, protected recycle bin/ undelete utilities, try toggling on/off file indexing(not too long on-- it's the worst drainage of computer resources)... the other previous mentions: any Norton product, system file protecting/ scanning apps, email scanners...... good luck......
  18. eh, couple dollars more this week: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib....=priceA&x=0&y=0 scroll down-- btw, second page has higher prices....
  19. edit: started reply before Bullet's, which is a better solution-- i was just worried about the no OS installed, length of transfer time.... Good Luck-- that's some project you have ahead of you. Winnet site has way for you to do it, asuming the point is not to spend more. You'll need this cable: http://www.bay-wolf.com/hddadapter.htm And to skip installing win9x, even if you go Astalavista's pcmcia route, scroll down here for the appropriate link to the boot install floppy for your XP version: http://www.computerhope.com/boot.htm Winxp should install & work on your system(I'd get nLite to trim it down for you)-- you probably need to be able to do work on it that you've started on an XP machine? As you know, it'd be helpful if you could get any more of the old ram for them, even though expensive compared to today's..... I'd made sure also to copy / install nLite, Autopatcher 5(just released, has all the updates & tweaks you'll need), anything else you think you'll need(you never know how long it'll take to seamlessly connect to the router), xp Recovery Console, & you may as well copy win9x install cds to hard drive(or just double-boot both anyways), and as well have their bootdisks at hand-- should xp balk at installing or some peripheral / the bios has issues with it-- then try win9x first, you can always try installing xp afterwards-- this all will come in handy for troubleshoting either OS / accessing your data in a pinch later, since you won't have the option of a repair cd. Good Luck-- let us know how much your new refurbished laptop purchase ends up costing It's actually your best bet if you want to save time, & lots of it maybe.
  20. Ha, ha.. you reduce it also by a factor of 10?
  21. Hey, Sven: Do you have an email scanner or real-time file protector? Norton's have been in the past deternined to cause Windows Explorer crashes. On another system i fixed a similar Windows Explorer problem that was not cured by Repair, by uninstalling IE(i used XPLlite), then i re-installed AutopatcherXP: telling it to over-install everything-- even older & lower-version files. This fixed the problem, and i was subsequently able to hit Windows Update-- as that autopatcher was months old. It was like a miracle-- couldn't do anything before the fix. The difference now for you would be that the Autopatcher was released days ago & should have everything. Hopefully the forthcoming 13 announced patches by MS won't cause any issues<g>. Good luck, all the best.
  22. The thing is, if you do a price search on the web, in n.america pro is actually cheaper(demand). I'm of course, totally dismissing Retail-- why pay $299.99 instead of @ $40 or so on the web...
  23. good luck-- service pack is included in latest autopatcher5 released days ago....
  24. http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib....=priceA&x=0&y=0 Shows why I ONLY recommend Pro & NEVER Home.... 3 pages, use "search within results" insert xp... specs: differentiate between: media/cd-only, license-only, full product, etc. AND overall reviews/merchant rating-- ie contrast the great rating for Compuvest out of so many reviews: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...01935/search=xp (contact them to make sure license is part of this deal btw) with cdw's lousy one(unless if you purchase through your academic/corporate institution-- & even then...): http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...08729/search=xp (only media/no license btw) http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod...77480/search=xp scroll down here to oem pricing-- need to buy something else alongside, even if it's only a couple of dollars. clicky: TechBargains mentioned by Astalavista( uses their basic engine(others like Geek.com also do btw) & they've cut to the chase a little more-- by only showing full sets, no plus for xp, etc. BTW semi-related-- awesome Astalavista zip job in sig: MS is again offering free 1 year trial of Office2003 Pro and/or individual components download/ship.
