  1. Sorry to hear, sgbrito My next thought, since this is USB, is power(btw let's list everything & let you discount what's obvious-- to avoid missing something if we assume you already did / know, & to completely eliminate each possible suspect one by one, even if not likely): First, though, i'd enable bootlogging to see if anything not only failed to load, but if it took extra long-- and as well system info & event viewer may hold clues-- scroll down at this page if you require the steps to do so: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...mc_str_xhtz.asp And when you looked up both updated mobo & the usb disk drivers, was there any mention on either site about a know issue w/ any XP patch / pack(there've been specific USB firmware upgrades released for SP2)..... When you looked in Device Manager for anything untoward, in the drive's Properties was udma enabled(and as well in windows & bios udma enabled)... I would toggle off all hibernate & standby in both windows & bios.. IF possible switch port..... both for it & any other usb peripheral... Connect drive to another computer, change cable..... Physically turn off & disable in Device Manager as many peripherals as possible, and as well unplug them inside the case: this not only to see if there's a power issue, but when you re-enable them they may all load in different order, which maybe also could be a cause... Also, when you reconnect them inside, try to re-connect them all to defferent slots than they were individually plugged into before(do this as well for all other peripherals possible)-- the reason here is that there's a small chance that an irq assignment may be causing a conflict between devices-- and more than likely your pc's original installation mode(acpi) precludes manually changing irq assignments-- this trick will cause them to be grouped / assigned differently & just maybe........
  2. The ones Gape mentioned-- also PowerArchiver..... remember to right-click & select Extract or similar command.... You're not gonna pay to use the trial or shareware of power archiver or winzip, and tugzip is free...... IZArc is great but can't handle that.......
  3. Ja, even with a lot of money it makes no sense to get it..
  4. Blimey, shiver me timbers! http://www.syddware.com/cgi-bin/pirate.pl http://www.inkyfingers.com/pyrates/terms/ and get your free pirate ringtones: http://www.yarr.org.uk/talk.html http://www.io.com/~sj/PirateTalk.html http://www.thepiratesrealm.com/pirate%20talk.html http://www.maritimepirates.com/jargon.html
  5. Free icon gallery & make your own: http://www.iconfactory.com/ http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_if.html http://www.aha-soft.com/iconlibs.htm edit: it wouldn't hurt to get into the habit of taking a picture with say: InstallRite or at least looking before & after(& easily remove a stubborn app with this) w/ say: JV16 in case the freeware is instead foistware... even though supposedly the app comes recommended, you never know / it can be changed at any time..... Happy Hunting....
  6. This FREE app will do it for you-- while the manual method is also easy, & likely you already have the icons you will use, it searches your entire system & catalogs them all: http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_aifw.html I haven't tried to change such an icon, but i believe if you change the one for the main exe file, it should update its shortcuts all over too: you would browse to say, c: windows\explorer.exe / right-click / properties / change icon / in: %WINDIR%\%SYSTEM%\SHELL32.DLL are stored a bunch of system icons.... or point to the location of yours... I would first right-click / properties the shortcut of the icon you wish to change, since often there will be extra copies of the exe file-- in this case probably in root drive & in win folder: you want to change the copy actually used/registered..... Hopefully this is what you meant?
  7. yes, on 1492-- don't follow the gif, but the printed numbers: Do as i say, not as i do(actually i pilfered that image from dslreports site)
  8. Exactomundo same procedure for extracting wmp10 file replacements.... replace files using CopyLock, which also eliminates un & registering processes
  9. Aza, go to Windows Update but instead, select Windows Update Catalog on the left, Find Updates for Win OS, Win ME in the dropdown menu, click Search, Critical Updates & Service Packs, on the upper right dropdown menu Sort by Posted Date.... take the 3rd one down: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (KB867282) - (Posted Date: February 04, 2005) Download size: 2.4 MB A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise a computer running Microsoft Internet Explorer and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. FYI careful, the second one for IE6 is also numbered: (KB867282) PS for Slovenians: this update for you not found in WinUpdate Catalog-- get it here instead, depending on your region: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=sl http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=sk
  10. Corrected URLs for home & review: i'm not on the take & do not spam, i had just quickly googled for the link-- there's plenty of hijacking/stealing going-- i've actually posted this app numerous times here w/o a hitch befor this. BTW all packs are free, whether labeled Lite, Full, Mega, Skatá, whatever, it's a better package.... raza, i'd reinstall or update wmp, install the extra codecs........ edit: url correction: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Review & Download description/home
  11. I have a friend that has Adelphia broadband. Sometimes things vary within a city: take NYC-- Roadrunner cable in a particularly dense Manhattan location is slower than the cheaper Verizon Dsl(& Earthlink, using their lines is even cheaper), so a no-brainer there-- while in a sparse area of Queens the cable is much faster than the dsl, so i pay for that extra.... Okie Dokie: At SBC/Yahoo! forum I see the following settings used in communications between techs & customers-- using Dr.Tcp : In drop-down menu, MTU 1492 for both the Ethernet Adapter(NIC) & Router(if/when you get one-- very important to not allow the router to auto handle this setting, or you may start seeing things like you can access a site, but not all areas of it, etc. ) Tcp Receive Window 63888 Windows Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection: set all to Default. Max Duplicate Acks and TTL: Leave Blank Save/Exit & Restart Networking or Reboot. As far as the DHCP tweak, i looked up SBC self-install instructs & noticed they use Enternet client to connect: it handles ip addressing different-- uses a couple of different methods before resorting to dhcp.... so if you signed up w/ them using their software, that would explain why that change is not advisable. If you registered with them w/o their software(you can just use winxp alone & not install any of their software at all=less drag & bloat), these would be the steps-- which you likely already performed correctly: Control Panel / Network & Internet Connections / Network Connections / right-click icon: Ethernet card connected to DSL modem / Properties / Internet Protocol TCP-IP / Properties / General / Use the following IP address: 192.168.xxx.xxx (x=whatever you want) / Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 / Ok / Restart Networking or Reboot. As far as ppp clients-- if you're a maximus tweaker, you might be attracted to raspppoe-- drawbacks would be: in case of trouble(none now, but in the future you may add another computer / router to the connection)... i haven't looked up their specific TOS, but you'd likely forfeit SBC/Yahoo! customer support w/o their or winxp's client(though you'd still get unofficial help from their techs at the forum), and as well MS(& in some ways windows xp can make it so easy to connect); though you'd still have rasspppoe site, dslreports & other such sites, & Bob Carrick, an advocate of it for quite some time, he's a good guy: worked at Verizon for years & then branched off on his own. In fact, here are his instructs for installing it:Contains screenshot links also, & as well as other tips for auto-connect, ppp & winxp troubleshooting help, etc. HTH.
  12. Everyday non-budget busters: Scorpio fans front, side, rear...see-thru a plus..... this one i wouldn't mind, but i'd have to drill all kinds of extra exhaust & fan vents..... http://www.xoxide.com/xopacl2.html Or you can do what this guy did: http://www.dansdata.com/hx45fan.htm I also usually remove 1 or 2 unused front ide covers, ditto rear unused expansion slots-- why not??????? http://www.koolance.com/ to be or not to be--perchance to dream....interesting as a project, but kind of irrelevant overkill esp re athlon64?? Unless if it would allow quadruple overclocking of the processor
  13. Yay!!!! Once again the ol' shotgunner fells more prey than the skilled marksman
  14. Nix that then.... when i can get access to winxp / dsl computer i will hunt around-- but even then, my isp may do things differently from yours-- there's a lot of changing & upgrading nowadays.... It may not even be an issue-- if you'd kindly post your ISP & approximate region or state, i'll get the straight scoop.. or someone else here may pipe up.... That's all you changed / if you reverse that you can re-connect to web, no?
  15. Órale, raza!!!!! Homes, do you mean you used to be able to play that avi in particular or avis in general? Depending on who creates a particular avi, it can require different codecs to play.... and wmp can have issues playing some avis, since MS has wanted to do away with them for its own format in wmp-- you may have to play some avis with one of these: DivX / XviD / 3ivx and/or your Intel Indeo codec may have gotten corrupted. You could try updating your mobo dowloads at Intel, even get the Intel App Accelerator... edit: url correction, don't know what that other link was:For sure you can fix this by downloading the: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack Review & Download home/description which contains the most up=to=date Indeo, wmp10 codecs for wmp9, etc. ... & those 3 other players mentioned, among other stuff-- you can pick & choose to install whatever you want in that pack...... YMMV as to whether that particular avi will then play well in wmp or you will need to use another player... Simón....... Vato Loco forever.......................
  16. Here you go Freddie: 46K only.... yes, there's 64K limit, but it's tiny in comparison........ http://freewarehome.com/software/newpad.html Smaller than Metapad & with no size limit, don't think this kind of animal exists... btw fetch your pw with this one, just hover your cursor over the file and see the first part of its stored text
  17. That site seems to be down temporarily.... here's a mirror, but use a download mgr because the're glacial: http://files.9down.com/tweakexp4.rar
  18. free: http://www.unhsolutions.net/Flash-Saving-Plugin/index.shtml Un-elegant solutions: 1.....(when not able to right-click / save as) for that and any other type like say, music that opens as part of a script: does NOT show a url in addressbar: right-click / open in new window... if the url does not still show in addressbar, open history & sort by order visited today, then click the script link-- it should then re-open w/ appropriate url in addressbar: now you can: File/Save As that page(will only contain the file in question) or bookmark the direct link. 2.....open windows\sendto -- right-click open area -- select: New -- shortcut -- type exactly this w/ the quotes: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe" OR browse to & highlight it -- click Next -- Edit the highlighted name to whatever you wish -- click Finish. 3.....Now you'll be able to right-click/send to/IE, open/run/edit most file types with it-- without having to associate their file types w/ IE instead of whatever app. You can test Send to IE by saving then sending one of these: http://www.fugly.com/media/download.php?ca...ting=&per_page=
  19. I think MS still makes available 'IE5.5 for winME '..... Also, you can get previous versions here: http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
  20. In that way XP can make it a bit easier than 9x. DSLReports can be very useful at the particular forum of one's ISP-- one may see official traffic & trouble reports... their techs on their own time may supply better 'unofficial' advice w/o having to stick to mandatory work scripts....from the tweakers the word'll be out on the best particular tricks & settings to have enabled... I'm waiting for the 25/50mb versions to come my way-- Norway for one, has had something like that in fairly widespread use for years now. Yes, select 'assign an ip address'. And I wouldn't touch any of those other settings-- your connection may stop working: you're not hosting, running servers / far-flung networks w/ multiple static ip's, etc... The Treewalk dns utility, if installed, would help in that it removes the dns lookup from your isp to your memory cache-- the speed difference is small/negligible but it's there. Even better, it has extra resolving options: websites servers can change domain name, ip address, server, host & that info may not be updated in timely fashion at any/all relay points on the web-- relay servers on the web may suffer overload or some problem necessitating an alternate route.. you'd just get an indefinite stall or page/site not found/not available error message. I have confirmed this efficacy-- some sites that can't be resolved w/o installing/enabling treewalk magically appear with it, disappear back w/o it. BTW one trick: removing/adding the www prefix sometimes allows access. You can always compare notes with isp's manual if having problems, but folks usually are ecstatic if they can get 90% of their stated dsl level. I'd continue to let them monitor your line the first 2/3 weeks-- there's software settings they adjust to compensate for any physical line issues... after this initial period you may then squeeze out a smidgen more performance, and that's about it.
  21. ¿¿¿¿¿ http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmfu.htm ???????? ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ http://www.theeldergeek.com/exclude_progra..._start_menu.htm ????? and i doubt if the following was added to each/all programs in registry: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284198 And another idea: Wesley Vogel NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList is added by gpedit.msc if you have XP Pro. If you don't have the key that shouldn't be the problem. No key means you should have the MFU programs list. Try this... Remove frequent programs list from the Start Menu Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | General tab | Under Programs | Set Number of programs on Start menu to 0 (zero) | Click the Clear List button | OK | Apply | OK Reboot. Right click the Start button | Properties | Customize button | General tab | Under Programs | Set Number of programs on Start menu to more than zero | OK | Apply | OK See if you start getting programs added to the list. [[Most Frequently Used list displays programs based on how often they are used. If you remove a program from the list, the computer resets its usage count to zero. When the program is used again, it gains usage points and it can reappear in the Most Frequently Used list.]] -- Hope this helps. Let us know. Wes MS-MVP Windows Shell/User
  22. The adapter instructs can seem confusing-- they were originally given out for win9x Network Properties(the tcpip is bound to several items in that dialog box, so one has to pick the correct item)-- never mind for you, you must be on XP. & I spaced out on the previous answer(i was right about being dumb): You're making up an ip address not assigned to anything else(dummy address)-- so use that 2(or any other digit besides 1) at the end. I just looked at my settings: i have 192.168.1.10 but say, 192.168.1.2 would also work, if it wasn't assigned to something else shared / in the network. Hopefully that works-- it fixed quite a bit for me.
  23. that must be for your adapter & not for your connection: I think so, try it....the setting would then change to every 3 days.......& i'm real dumb at this also-- out of curiosity I just tried connecting to my remote desktop w/ dsl, just to see those settings-- got 3 days for the adapter, @ 1 week for the connection....
  24. Yes, 1 instead of 2-- whatever you think the last number should be for you: didn't know your setup: if multiple computers, shared printer, router, modem, etc. That tweak(btw nothing to do with static ip) may not be needed..... windows every xx minutes depending on settings, may want to detect the adapter, assign ip address... if you're surfing, things stop while this process goes on: if your browser periodically freezes / hangs / loads real slowly.... then you'd know that tweak would help you. It's great you haven't applied any tweaks yet-- in the beginning your connection is monitored, then the settings adjusted so you get your appropriate speeds. If after that's set you apply tweaks, you may squeeze a liitle extra gain out. Whereas if you'd applied them before, it'd be for naught once they adjusted your line settings. Looks like you're doing great: 1.5 is what your level is?
  25. Hi, welcome! http://www.weethet.nl/english/hardware_bootfromusbstick.php http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hp...load/20306.html Let us know if that works......
