  1. Title pretty much says it all. I've been scouring the net for like a week plus now off an on. Collecting whatever Sigmatel drivers I could find and trying them out. After accumulating a ton (and screw that sounddrivers site, it seems 100% bogus?) none of them work still for 98.

Someone had made a nice driver package for the D600 with two drivers, one of which worked on a D600 I had built previously but did not work on this D610, it says the chip is a 9751, not a 9750 like in the D600.

If anyone could help I'd very very appreciative.

Quick aside, I also can't seem to get the USB to stop being dumb, using nusb 3.1 or 3.3 I think it is, if I remove the ICH6 usb controller it will load up correctly and work and I can use a usb drive, then upon reboot it gets a yellow exclamation and stops working. If I go safe mode and remove it, it seems to work for one go again, or maybe it was that and also turning off usb emulation in bios. My brain is turning to mush.

I haven't even gotten to the wireless and ethernet drivers yet. Used Scitech for the video which is working good so far and tends to do OK on the 915 chipsets.

  2. I need to try out his Sata drivers. There are multiple systems that I've tried recently that are newer and I was experimenting with ones that have sata drives and I almost never have any luck with them. Do you slipstream it in to an install? I got installs that would hang on many of them after either the initial copy or after the 1st or 2nd install portion that couldn't complete on sata drives. I don't even bother with ones you can't put into ide mode in bios, but even then a lot of them still won't work for whatever reason. Only one I recall getting to work was HP Dc7600 mini, no extra drivers required, used the same slipstream disk I made with your 900 series stuff in it on all of them installs I do now that are anything above what is normally supported by 98.

Also on that AMD200 system and now also on a 2 others, a 915 and a 945, I have various other issues. On the AMD 200 it will only install good with a fresh install on a pata drive with sata fully disabled. Then if I try to add in any expansion cards to the pci slots it will not boot, screen just stays black where windows would normally start to load.

On the 915 and the 945, I can add in cards to the PCI slots ok, however when I use display doctor to get better graphics and anything higher than 640x480, if I connect a usb drive it will freeze and hard lock.

(I don't like using bearwin on anything I build because any dos console will cause the screen to go to garbage.)

  3. Thank you LoneCrusader. I've never had any luck on Nforce4 boards myself. I've tried a few and they make me swear a lot usually. I started over from scratch and reinstalled from cd. I used a disk that has some of your stuff on it for the 900 series chips slipstreamed with the /p i switches and so far it works. I didn't try to do it with the sata drive again. Solo pata hd and pata optical with all sata disabled. This time it seems to be working. How exactly would the full syntax of that line I would have needed to add to config.sys gone though? I'm not great at all with adding lines to autoexec or config.sys tbh.

*Edit: I forgot you had put a link there already, I'll try to read that. Also thank you VERY much for the link to the memorial page. I very much appreciate that. I think I bought a few things from him in the past actually. Can't remember what though. I don't remember a lot these days... ha.

  4. Quick update, I tried using a pata drive with no luck, even totally disabled the sata and it still won't load into normal mode. Deleted all entries for hard drive controllers in safe mode and let them reload. Reloads fine, after hardware detect/driver load upon next normal boot it just does it again and won't fully boot. Maybe it's this chipset but you'd think with a pata drive in legacy mode it should just work but it still doesn't. Not sure what I can do.

  5. Hello all. Have an old Emachines here with a 80GB sata drive I wanted to use for Windows 98. Has ATI 200 chipset. Used an image I have for Dell Dimension 2400 I use for starters a lot that I originally used the p and i commands with to disable most of the acpi i believe that does. Has worked well on a lot of systems. Anyway so I booted it up after imaging and it was loading drivers pretty happily but after the drive controllers loaded and reboot all of a sudden it's ultra, mega slow. It loads the first part ok and I see the 98 splash screen and then it just stops. I've had this happen before and I think if I let it sit for like 40+ minutes it would load. Safe mode loads fine. Sata controller is in Legacy mode, legacy USB is turned off, power mode set to S1, hyper threading off. Moved sata cable to port 0, using IDE optical drive so that's not a factor. Disabled all kinds of other stuff with no luck.

Anyone have any experience with this? Its not the first system I've tried to put 98 on and had things going well and then poof it goes to the super mega slow boot. Usually disabling legacy usb is the culprit. I haven't tried many SATA drive builds and this is why, a lot of them I can't get to work that I have tried.

Also I'm not sure if Rlowe's sata drivers would work or be useful since I'm running legacy mode, I saw that he had passed and that is sad news indeed. I never got a copy so now I'm not sure how I could.

  6. Thanks for helping clarify that about editing inf files Lone Crusader. I assumed it would be something like that but didn't know specifics. I'm sure I could have spent quite a bit of time trying to read up on just that.

You are correct it did not provide SB emulation as a separate device (or at all). The one soundblaster PCI card I mentioned previously is one of the very few I've ever seen install the SB16 emulation automatically. Think the only other one I ever saw did that was an old crystal or something. I've done probably at least 100 different 98SE systems by now and seems like I recall very few ever had it.

I'm gonna need to read up on that WDMEX.VXD and mess around with it, it sounds super useful.

The Broadcom driver provided by Farfigs11 (thank you btw) did install using device manager, however I get an error again saying it needs NDIS.VXD & NTKERN.VXD. After looking up this issue again I found someone mentioning they used sfc to extract those files from the CD and put them where they were supposed to be, however upon doing so I learned they were already there! So, it must be some other issue I guess but once again I'm not sure. I guess I could try restoring again but I already did that to get the sound working and now it does. I'm still at the point all I've done is install sp3, nusb, dx, display doctor & now the sound driver & manual network driver that isn't quite working.

  7. Alright. First of all, thanks guys. Much help.

I tried the files Destro had posted first for audio, neither seemed to be working correctly, I had installed the two hotfixes in the one folder and there was a third with the other driver, I had installed all three. I'm pretty sure that had something to do with it and the AUDIO_XP_2K_050908 one might have worked and I'm pretty sure I recall you being correct in that it had the hardware ID in the inf when I looked at it, either that or the other one did, I know at least one of them did and I got really excited until it didn't work! (At first.)

Restored to a previous backup I had made, (which I might not have tried if Destro hadn't said my OS could be corrupt, which I honestly didn't think it was, but apparently something must have borked so I'm glad I did!) basically took it back to the same as when I made the first post, windows fully installed, sp3, nusb, direct x9. I had tried a few soundmax installers before I made that backup and uninstalled them, but had not ran any of those hotfixes. I downloaded the driver Lone Crusader mentioned, I should have checked it after seeing other drivers for 2k that had the 98 folder in them to see if that one did too because of course as you discovered it did. After restoring I installed the one from HP and it went without a hitch using it's own installer. Rebooted and poof I had sound. Decent too so that's nice. Either of them might have worked at this point but I figured I'd try the official HP one first and when it worked I about did a damn backflip. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Like if I knew both your paypals I was about to send donations your way lol.

I've had quite a few systems with that startup crackle as well, I never figured out how to fix that, I remember specifically I had like 5+ of an amd 64 SIS chipset that really crackled a lot on startup but were ok after that. I think I had put Creative cards in those too because the onboard was HD and there was no drivers for it. Don't remember which model CT card I used exactly. Know that I've read about the differences between .vxd and .wmd drivers before but I sure can't remember off the top of my head.

Never tried inserting a hardware ID into an inf, no idea how to do that. I'm not even totally sure really when looking at an inf how the ID is supposed to be in there, it appears some have various syntax, it's not just plainly states like SIV(L) shows it.

Also, now that I've got sound, I tried installing Doom just to see if I would get lucky. Running it in Windows I got sound effects but no music as per usual. I'm honestly a bit ashamed of myself I haven't figured out how to do DOS sound better but I've only figured it out with a few particular cards, one of the PCI soundblasters that has the SB16 emulation built in to the driver installer, and real DOS sound with an SB16 ISA using it's specific driver for DOS that I learned from a Phil's Computer's video and the nice package & info in his links. So basically I can either get DOS sound in windows with that PCI card, or I can get real dos sound with an actual SB16 ISA. Is there software that can be used to get sound for DOS games in windows or dos or both with any working audio? Or do you always have to basically use drivers for specific audio chips?

Dencorso "I haven't been much around the community since I've given up on 9x/ME some 5 years ago, but I'm not totally forgetful yet, so this post is just to remind you of 2 things:
A.) Audio drivers for 2k usually can be successfuly installed on 98SE with Rloew's WDMEX.VxD or Walter Oney's WDMSTUB.SYS, and WDMCHECK.SYS can be used to find their dependencies.
B.) Thee EeePC 70x and 900 are both based in the 915 chipset, so @Sfor's old results may be useful for your present quest:"

^ That sounds super cool. I just did another desktop recently, think it was an hp as well I couldn't get audio on, 2k was the oldest driver, think it was a 945 chipset, wonder if that WDMEX.VxD would help. I'll definitely have to check that out. No idea what it is or more importantly how to use it though. Now that I'm re-reading I notice that Crusader mentioned it as well. So it must work for more than just audio apparently.

For the phone modem I guess I'm generally not very concerned about getting those working, I tend to just leave them be. Also this one doesn't have an SD card reader slot either. Having one on a 98 system might be quite useful though. It does have a PCMCIA slot, that audigy card is pretty cool, I didn't even know those existed.

Don't think I'd heard of disabling pci steering on a system before, started to read up on it a little, I'll have to remember that. I'd almost say it's fun figuring out which systems need what power options on or off, acpi disabled, legacy usb, /p i switches on install etc, but it's really not! Haha.

Ok, as for the broadcom ethernet I can't seem to get it to work. I've tried the driver Destro linked, and I've downloaded a bunch of other similar drivers for it but none of them (including the one destro provided) have that specific hardware ID in any of the infs, unless I'm mistaken, which I very well could be because I just learned how to sorta look for that a few days ago! (I also tried the have disk option, which came up with 3 possibilities, one for Asus, one MSI, and the 3rd I think was just generic broadcom, but I stopped there because I didn't want to fry something not understanding the IDs and stuff.) Also I tried downloading the one on the HP site with hopes it might have been like the audio and have a 98 folder in it but no joy. Actually I don't even see 14E4 170C in the inf in the 2000 folder so that kinda baffled me. I haven't given up on the lan just yet but I downloaded almost all of them on driverguide for 4401 and not one has that hardware ID in it. I can force / have disk install one of the three options in one if you think it will work.

Too bad on the wireless, if you are sure the 2915 is just plain not supported I guess I won't bother with it anymore. It wasn't critical, just a nicety. It does have a mini pci slot so something else could be put in there if needed. I did have a D600 at one time with a broadcom wireless that did work at one time but I sold it.

  8. The first one there installed but came up again with "no adi codec". I went to device manager & properties and it was still an unknown audio device, I went to properties and tried to load driver auto, no. Tried to use inf in the 98 folder, but there were no options when it came up to select a device, it was blank? So I scratched that. I had installed both of the hotfixes in the folder first, and rebooted when asked both times. (Also I looked at the inf file and didn't seem to see that hardware ID specified in there like you mentioned you thought you had seen?)

Tried the 2nd one, again it installed fine, didn't load any drivers. This time when I pointed it to the right 98 folder in the auto it picked something up and installed. Still has yellow exclamation though and says "The NTKERN.VXD & MMDEVLDR.VXD device loaders for the device could not load the device drivers."

I think one of the previous packages I installed got that far but I assumed it was messed up and uninstalled it. I think I noted looking at the inf in the SoundMx3/smaxwdm/SE folder that it does actually have a line for that device hardware ID. I could be wrong because I have no idea really but I saw a line, the last one in the block toward the top of the document that matches 8086 266E 099C103C except for the -03 on the end from the screen shot above. I got really excited because I thought this one was going to work... Not sure what to do.

  9. So I have this HP laptop that I would like to put 98 on. HP nx6110.

I have gotten 98 to install using a 98 disk with LoneCrusader's extra chipset stuff on there. There aren't many options in BIOS and I was afraid it would have serious issues, it does run though. I tried /p i on the install first but that didn't work, it would hang at about 14 minutes left on "installing hardware" and reboot over and over. Using no switches worked and it installed to my surprise. I turned off legacy USB and execute disable and I think that's it. There were no power options to disable ACPI or any other power options.

I installed unofficial service pack 3 main updates, nusb, and direct x 9.0c. Then installed display doctor to get video going and that is seemingly working good so far. One yellow exclamation I would like to get rid of on one of the "motherboard resources" with a resource conflict I'm not sure how to resolve.

Now to the stuff I'm really stuck on other than the resource conflict that doesn't seem to stop it from working.

Audio & network drivers. I took pictures of the chips but seems I'd have to make them super small to post here, so I'll just put the numbers on them up.

    Intel chip - 915
    Intel 82801FBM
    F603ID14
    SL89K
    '03

    ADI - sound chip (Soundmax)
    1032AR
    0604
    21443

Broadcom Gigabit ethernet (Net Xtreme I think)
    Broadcom
    BCM4401KFBG
    RS0602 P20
    767875 E1

    Intel Wifi mini-pci card
(believe this is an intel 2915)
    Spares No: 390685-001
    Assembly No:390427-001

Sound - I've tried a bunch of soundmax drivers to no avail. Couple of them would go through the install but them come up and say "no adi codec" and wouldn't actually work on reboot. Tried: 5.12.01.5250, something .3890 / adi1888_7154_win98 which is a great one that has worked on a bunch of 800 series adi chips that nothing else worked on, Dell's 5.12.01.3503 (R41863) and a few others. No joy. I tried looking up the 1032AR chip and it seems to be on Adi's site but can't find SQUAT on what else it would be called or leads on any specific drivers for it. HP's site isn't specific at all either to help identify it. Just adi ac'97 is all it says and 2000 is the oldest driver there unfortunately. Sounds is almost always the biggest pita I swear. I would be so amazing if someone made a universal 98SE sound driver package.

Network - I have a number of broadcom netxtreme drivers but none of them worked for some reason. Looked around for 4401 drivers and found many that said they had 98 drivers but didn't. Haven't found any 4401 that actually DO.

Wireless - Think this is an intel 2915 wireless, pretty much same here, can't find 98 drivers for it, if they exist.

I'd really like to at the very least get sound going if nothing else. Wired ethernet would be a nice 2nd and the longshot wireless last but would be extra cool if it did work.

  10. Have a nice Dell 5150 that I had put Windows 7 on and had running pretty decent, realized that the chipset on it is an 850PM, so I thought hey what the heck, lets see if I can get 98SE on there and running good.

    General hardware:
    P4 3.06Ghz
    Intel 850PM chipset
    Sigmatel 9750 audio
    Nvidia 5200FX (32mb)
    Broadcom 440x ethernet
    Broadcom BCM94306MP Wireless card
    512mb ddr1 333mhz
    40gb Fujitsu HD
    Quanta SBW-242 optical DVD/CD-rw drive

Here's the problem, I put an image onto the drive (image of Dell D600 with 855 chipset) and upon first boot it detected lots of hardware, lots of loading & reboots later it gets to desktop and appears to function fine, however there are some problems, the biggest one being that it does not detect the optical drive. I tried installing Intel 6.3.0.1007 chipset package (final 98 intel chipset package) and it loaded drivers for some things like usb controllers & such but did not fix the issue of not seeing the optical drive. (Which works just fine to boot from BIOS or in any other OS, etc. Also I tried a clean install but it couldn't finish because at some point it can't see the optical drive and continue the install after it reboots, wants files from the cd to continue but can't see the drive to use. I did this on a separate hard drive and then popped back in the original that I imaged when it did not work.)

    Under DM, I have under hard disk controllers;
Intel 82801DBM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CA - looks fine no exclamation.
Primary IDE Controller (dual fifo) - this has yellow exclamation, says device is either not working properly, not present or does not have all drivers installed. Does not say it has any resource conflicts.
Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo) - looks fine, no exclamation.

It seems that this issue crops up on laptops / notebooks as I was trying to research a fix, others seem to have had variations of this problem as well, but found no real fixes for it.

  11. I have something to add to this and I'm also hoping to find a little help with some issues I'm having with a newer board. I have an MSI K9VGM-V which has the K8M890 chipset. Which I think was pretty much the last VIA chip to support 98 much. I have been able to get one going with an IDE drive and was able to load drivers for all of the onboard devices except for the audio.

I have two problems with this chipet/board.

    1. Lack of onboard audio. It is a realtek ALC883 chip. From research it seems maybe, there really is no driver to support it, I have read some saying that any HD chip will not work with 98 and there are no drivers for it. Onboard audio with 98 seems to overall be the biggest PITA when configuring various 98 systems... Is there really no driver in existence for this chip for 98SE?

    2. 98 seems to function fine until I try to put it on this board with a SATA drive rather than and IDE drive. BIOS is in IDE mode. I can do two things, one, I can start a new install from the 98 cd and I can get as far as the first reboot, after it load files, the part where it would normally ask for the key. Or, the second scenario is that I can take a clone image from one that I have finished already with IDE drive, put it on a SATA drive, and it will boot fine and start loading drivers & go through all the prompts, when it reboots, it will sit at a black screen. If I hit f8 fast enough, I can get into safe mode and it seems to work fine. I suspect it being an IDE controller driver but I'm not really sure what to do.

  12. I have successfully installed 98SE on a Dell Dimension 4600. It did require the -p -i options for AMI bios, otherwise I could get it to boot into windows but there were un-resolvable conflicts with resources. I used only 512 of ram and a 40gb IDE hard drive. I don't recall if I got the onboard sound to work. Onboard audio seems to always be a giant b***h to get working w 98.
