  1. about 2200 for my laptop, but without discount I would have paid about 3500, thank god for 12% student discounts and 35% off coupons...

as for my desktop probly about 1500-1800 if you count the cost of the components when i bought them (I reused the Case, PSU, one of the Cd burners, and the old monitor as a secondary)

  2. one thing, i noticed programs like winrar seem to loose there magicical context menu functions, actually i don't know of any program i use that adds to the menu in 32, that works in xp64 (apart from the ati catalyst control centre), and things that add functionallity to explorer doesn't seem to work either, ie 64seems faster, but that could be because most of the plugins don't work with it, i use the ie64 for most sites, then when sites require flash just fire up ie32

try d-loading the newest versions of programs, winrar fixed it right after x64 came out, and most others are catching up

if all of your hardware has X64 drivers there should be no problem getting it up and runnging (a few exceptions such as splinter cell: caose theory use starforce and doesn't work in x64, but i boycot programs that use that anyways so thats no prob for me)

  3. i would have to agree, the demo scared me, but from the get go the full game just wasn't sacary period, and for how bad the graphics look, it runs horribly even on low settings (on a Athlon64 3500+, 1gig RAM, ATI X800) RANT> after playing HL2 if games don't run good im just not happy, i mean HL2 ran with medium settings with decent FPS on a 900MHZ Duron with a 32MB Radeon 7200, and i stilled looked excelent, wereas this game doesn't really look all that great and runs horribly </RANT>

  4. Your PSU may be the cause, you have to remember 520w is when it is running cold (say 40f), not when its actually running, its probly closer to 420w at room temp and even less when it starts running hot from power consumtion.

but before you go buy a new PSU to test it, start the game, open the windows task maneger and limit the game to only run on one core, that usually fixes it (and i can almost garantee it will fix it if your having problems with half-life, or HL2 Games), and i should tell you if this does fix the problem then you will have to do this everytime you want to play the game (i don't beleive microsoft has enabled the ability to set it by executable)

    [edit]

(for the unknown drivers i would suggest unpacking you MB driver pack and try installing those drivers as its probly something like front USB ports or something)

also have you tested the games in WIN32 instead of X64?, though if you haven't i would trully try the above noted suggestion.

  5. search seems to be down, at least for me everything i try comes up blank (on other topics to) but i am trying to disble ctfmon.exe on startup, but nomatter what i do it re-enables itself. does anyone have any solutions for this as i have been racking my brain over it for a while?

  6. the reason i use it is because my old computer (800mhz Duron) ran horribly so i squeezed it for what it was woth (which wasn't much :) )but once i upgraded my computer i activated themes again and found them horid, and i have yet to find a decent theme online (Aero looks amasing though) so i have stuck with classic mainly because there isn't anything better, it drives me nuts at school having to use luna. my other reason is im am mainly a function over form sorta person, and luna just doesn't provide as easy of function, wereas classic is esaier on the eyes and is functional.

  7. this was an unmodified copy of regular xp pro (32 bit)

so you are trying to put 64-bit hotfixes on a 32-bit OS?

if i am understanding you currectly that won't work, you have to have Windows XP Pro X64 Edition if i missunderstood please say

and if i did misinterpret you, did you try installing just the base X64 windows?

  8. I would say it depends were you are at, if you are at a high school were you get all the people who think they are "l33t" and screw with both the software and the hardware you would probly need more people to take care of it than say you were running an office were the only apps used were word, excel, etc you would probly need less as most problems will be less technical and moreso user error (PEBKAC) ... were you just have to tell people how to do simple things, or check that the power strip is on

  9. i used to have about 2500 (*curses Maxtor*) untill my old 120 GB HD crashed (*again curses maxtor*) right now im at about 1200, but it should shoot way back up around christmas as we should be getting our stuff out of storage so i can get the rest of the CD's

  10. i prefer Digg, mainly cause if you ever look at the comments on /. about anything software related it becomes "d00dz b1ll g473z is 3v1l" and it kinda gets old, so my problem is not thes site so much as the community
