I couldn't find posts relating to this being the reason, but I found this post, and I am unsure if that's what you're referring to.

This isnt it, i think his post mightve been deleted from the server breakdown that happened before. It could still be there but i couldnt be bothered to go digging for it.

For XP probably not, it's a more modern computer so I wouldn't expect XP to work. Just know that there are an ACPI.sys for Windows 7 that might work. There's even the procedure to modify it, but I'm not sure if the procedure can be applied to Vista's ACPI.sys, and don't know a lot about editing such files to modify these lines.

I patched acpi.sys it and it didnt bsod on the acpi, instead it bsod on the error 0xc0000098 which is probably the NVMe so the mod might be working. Using Windows 7 for the time with the patched acpi, hoping i can do that with vista soon.

Thank you , I'll try . I don't test on Efi/uefi motherboard. I test this on a very old board from 2010 or so and Titan from 2014 - 2015 . The mobo has an old school BIOS. I wonder if it has something to do with my Vista edition being Business ? While most of you have the Ultimate version .

It has nothing to do with editions and even i was using vista business till the very end. I was recently trying to bypass DSE for windows 7 on my new laptop aswell which is the same as vista, due to a patched file. Anyhow i do remember a software that could trick windows into believing a file was signed and boot with it, although i cant remember the name, perhaps you could find it when you get free time. Thanks for your find.

I slipstreamed the drivers and then booted into the USB, it didn't work, so I rebooted out of it and my SSD had disk errors.

Aah, i just noticed your laptop was considerably newer like mine (11th gen). This is probably due to acpi.sys, one would need to patch it and replace it in boot.wim and install.wim. You would also need something like UEFISeven since the UEFI doesnt support CSM. This is what i did to get it running on my MSI GP76 Leopard 11UG.

I think it's pointless because there won't be any useful apps available on 8.0 anyway

I agree, even 8.1 is rare nowadays  with W10 1703 (Redstone 2) being the bare minimum now.

There were red banners plastered all over the forum a month or so ago stating that MSFN was going to shut down "if donations don't come in" (paraphrasing, I forget the exact wording).

Issues were pointed out that the donation system wasn't working in regards to submitted donations but withdrawals from submitting accounts were never withdrawn.

Donation system seems to be resolved.

Donations were made, MSFN lives on.

Damn, Thanks, glad to know its back.

Hello everyone. I'm sorry for the very long period of inactivity lately. I've had a lot going on outside of MSFN in my personal life that has kept me busy. I also walked away from an unhealthy relationship and have been taking steps to rebuild my life since then, which has kept me from being able to update the list for the past several months.
In light of the recent announcement that MSFN is going offline, I will be moving my list over to a forum hosted by my friend Ryan: http://forum.eclectic4un.me/ This will take a while as I need to manually re-add all of the links and formatting, but I will post the link here when it is finished. Feel free to join our forum if you're looking for a new home once MSFN is no longer available! We're still grassroots at the moment, but we will be building a new legacy software community over there and we'd love to have you join us (@Ximonite& @win32 are already there and have pertinent posts related to Vista Extended Kernel & Win2000's KernelXE!).

Thank you so much everyone here for your contributions to the list over the past 6 years. It has been my pleasure to help provide this information to Vista users for the past several years, and I like to believe our efforts have helped many Vista (and even XP) users over the years. I'm sad to see MSFN go, but all good things do come to an end.

    Best regards :)

Wait what, i've been away for a while aswell, where is the announcement of MSFN going offline.

v5.95 has been already uploaded to MUC; please download the standalone x64 file,

    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB890830

    (WS2008 compatible variant:)
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=ba94649b-e7e7-46ec-8369-9f97804c6dab
    http://download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/uprl/2021/11/windows-kb890830-x64-v5.95_6ea7900c5dc32947ae0f05ffa0b168912fe42627.exe

and attempt to run it locally; while I can understand that MU is detecting and downloading that update successfully (since the MU "hack" spoofs Vista as WS2008), if you're able to successfully launch/run the local file, I suspect latest Extended Kernel files/settings play a role in that (e.g. because of spoofing the OS as Win7 :dubbio:).

    +1 :)

It shows the unsupported OS error like expected, even spoofing it doesn't seem to work so it probably hard checks for the version.

how did you get msrt v5.93 to install?

Since a few months msrt would just install without errors through WU. I too found it odd and don't believe it actually installs but i may be wrong or maybe WU has some exception now. Eitherway i'm sure we all can agree that MSRT is useless.

I was almost certain that .NET 4.6.0 was the last to officially support Server 2008 SP2, but I just looked it up and and a Microsoft document now shows 4.6.2 as supported!? (But it neglects to mention 4.6.1 in connection with 2008 SP2, so quite possibly an error. This is near the bottom of https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/get-started/system-requirements .) Special procedures are were required to install 4.6.2 or above on Vista. Edit: Subsequent posts reveal that installing 4.6.2 is no longer a problem, assuming that SHA-2 support has been installed. Btw updates for 4.6.1 and earlier are supposed to end on April 26.

Yes i saw this too but never posted about it here. It had to be done in my case to keep getting updates for net framework through WU. With 4.6.1 installed it wouldn't find updates anymore, i also noted that updates for net framework only stated 4.6.0 and 4.6.2 unlike before where it showed 4.6.1 aswell. Glad to see you mentioning it here eitherway.

Actually, there is no "SteamFix" defined. But for Steam you could attempt "SuperWin7VerFix=1". There is also a SuperWin8VerFix and a SuperWin10VerFix.

Odd, the spoofing doesn't seem to work for me at all on any program i tried. Opera still shows Windows Vista and NT6.0 and kept throwing up popups about how it can only run on Windows 7 and above. With Application Verifier it would show up as NT6.1 and aero was working. Also i kept getting kernelol.dll is missing error so i manually placed it in syswow64. Idk if its my install or the kernelex installer is broken.

Not yet. I may have to implement a lot more stuff on x86 first.

Doesn't seem far off from working, it does open steam mostly and then crashes after 10seconds or so.Does the spoofing method on top apply to all applications i wonder, for example i write Enabled=1 and Steamfix=1?

Changes in the latest Vista Extended Kernel release:

A new function has been added to user32 in x64. This should help with newer Adobe applications.

Two new functions have been added to ntdll. This will allow Windows 7 WordPad to run. That function was contributed by Ximonite.

Most of the K32* series of functions have been implemented to kernel32 x86.

The SetDefaultDllDirectories bug is now fixed for x86 applications. Run x86 VLC and you will see the difference.

GetLogicalProcessorInformationEx is also implemented on x86, without issue.

    Version spoofing is now implemented.

Make a file in your Windows directory named osver.ini.

If you have Firefox/Thunderbird 91 or above installed, or Waterfox G4 installed, copy the path of the executable to the file and place it in brackets.

    Write "Enabled=1" below.

    Then write "FirefoxFix=1" below.

Then run Firefox/Thunderbird/Waterfox. Font rendering also differs slightly with this option set on older versions of those browsers.

Steam crashes, did you manage to get it running with the new ui?

I think @burd has them all (see his yesterday post), but not sure if he is currently on Haswell+ hardware and wish he could remember which Patch Tuesday he was referring to. I can’t test myself, but this is interesting.

I would like to clarify that i do have all the updates with Intel Skylake 6700HQ, although remembering which update is beyond me at this point

i don't think that ie10 is more secure than ie9 on vista given the server 2008 updates

Ofcourse its not? i said its a slight upgrade since IE9 doesnt load much nowadays. Maybe we could even use the w8.0 updates on it and try, provided both actually work to begin with.
