  1. Hi Mathwiz, yes, a solution could be that one, but in my case I don't want to store the shadow copies in another drive. So for me the solution for now is to use another drive. Hi jaclaz, I have to look at your possible solution, thanks.
  2. Hi w2k4eva, thanks for your answer. I want to read and write the drive from XP and 7. I don't use system restore on XP, I use it on 7. I disabled system restore and VSS service on XP but it is the XP driver volsnap.sys that removes restore points and previous versions from Vista and later, and it cannot be disabled. So the only "solution" is never use a drive with Vista or later shadow copies on Windows XP. I think the only trivial fix they could have done was to modify volsnap.sys to recognyze Vista shadow copies an NEVER, EVER touch them. Cause is inadmissible that an O.S. removes anything from an external drive. I wonder how many times back in 2006, somebody plugged a Vista user USB drive into Windows XP and removed all previous versions in the drive. Or somebody took a Vista system drive with a virus and plugged into an XP machine to remove it, and every restore point vanished...
  3. Hi, thanks a lot for your answer. I think there is no solution for my case, cause the solution they offer is to disable the volume in Windows XP so it can not delete the shadow copies. In my case I want to access my USB drive from Windows 7 and Windows XP. That's why I hoped there were some hotfix for this issue and a new version of volsnap.sys. I tried to disable the driver volsnap.sys but I get a BSOD. Anyway I don't know why they didn't fix this with an update for volsnap.sys for Windows XP when Vista came out in 2006, cause this could lead to an important data loss.
  4. Hi, anybody knows if there is a hotfix for the file volsnap.sys?, (mine is dated 2008-14-4 and version 5.1.2600.5512) This is the problem I have: On Windows 7 I use Previous versions, and every time I plug my USB hard drive on my Windows XP and after that I plug it on my Windows 7 I loose all the snapshots of this drive, with this error: volsnap event ID 29: The shadow copies of volume F: were aborted during detection. I found this explanation: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/the-shadow-copies-of-volume-i-were-aborted-during/e85c39ef-6264-4fed-a219-8e41087e6ba0?tab=AllReplies#tabs but no solution.
  5. Hi, I think I had this problem years ago and it was caused by wrong permissions for the registry hives. Check permissions for the files: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUser\ntuser.dat C:\Documents and Settings\YourUser\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat They have to be inherited from C:\Documents and Settings\User\ (Full Control to User, System and Administrators)
  6. Interesting!!, I didn't know about this!! Is there a list of available hotfixes for windows xp not included in windows update or even in the catalog?
  7. there's another one: http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/software/secu/2017/10/windowsxp-kb4048968-x86-embedded-enu_ab6f62f99b8c12c77669875735ee6143d3bc74b7.exe
  8. If you want to speed up WU detection instal first KB4042120 (win32k.sys) and KB4040685 (IE8). That worked for me. By the way, NET4 KB4040962 replaces KB2978125 (system.runtime.remoting.dll)
  9. Anybody knows why KB4039111 is no longer in the catalog?
  10. Thanks for your answer, but no, after disabling all addons it's the same. I installed both to compare and the diference is big. Even opening a folder in the bookmarks toolbar and hovering the mouse through other folders to open them is slower. In a faster computer maybe won't be noticiable but definitely the performance of 45.9 is much better than 52.
  11. Hi, after updating firefox from 45.9 ESR to 52.2 ESR on my old Pentium M laptop with Windows XP, browsing the web is very slow cause the cpu reach 100% a lot. Anybody noticed that? Firefox 52 ESR may be the last version with XP support. Before they drop xp support I used Palemoon, cause it was lighter than firefox, and before that Opera 12, even more lighter. Maybe it's time to go back to IE8?
  12. I think it is safe to remove everything inside that folder. I think the files in that folder were created in case of another service pack SP4. It's been a while since no new updates have been creating it's folder inside $hf_mig$
  13. Hi, in my test virtual machine with Windows XP and just .NET Framework 4, I didn't apply any updates on april. Checking now for updates I get for NET4 KB4014605 and KB4014570. I installed them and recheck for updates and found no more updates. ¿What happened with KB4020510???
  14. Hi, I was an Avast user too, but since it began to cause troubles with Windows update, I moved to Avira. Another thing I realized was that every time an office update went wrong because of avast, it left a bunch of duplicates msp files on my c:\windows\installer folder. Removing them was a time consuming task cause I had to search in the registry what was the real uninstaller for the office patch and delete the others.
