  1. First Skip out of the chute is more like fertilizer, 18204 installed with no errors.  Just a kid from the farm used to working with crap.  This new crap may be destined for 2019?  The old Dell laptop took it in stride.  Still have most of the goodies locked down, like no background programs running and Ghostery on the browsers.  First impression is that is some good crap.

  2. Is amount of time to update a factor of crap?  The latest Build of Windows 10 Pro Insider, 17713, completed the update on Friday the 13th, 7/13/18.  The update started on 7/12/18 and completed after about 20 hours with one retry question which was answered, "Yes."

What I do now is ignore this crap called an OS and stick to Windows 7...I spend enough time fixing customers computers with it installled....

This latest update starts with tons of questions and many of my customers are freaking out because they just don't understand what to do...and even if I try to expalain on the telephone...doesn't always work....

Shame on Microsoft with all this crap!!!

    "The Taming of the Crap"

A neighbor has an HP laptop with With 10 and yes, he thought that all his computer world was lost.  The normal desktop was gone (The Sky is Falling!).  Just a normal bit of crap.  Tablet mode on a non-tablet PC.  However, the OS had never been Userized.  Win update had faulted trying to go to 1803 from 1709.  Some original app software that came with the new PC was blocking the update to go cleanly.  Housekeeping to clean out the offender fixed that.  Brought in other browsers with Ghostery to start the PC lock down.  Removed other outdated apps, ran Malwarebytes and Windows Defender and surprisingly both ran error free.  Added several apps to the Taskbar for easy user control.  Updated to Version 1803, OS Build 17134.81.  Then went into Settings and turned off most of the info gathering and free roam app software (Run in background stuff).  Helped neighbor understand how to use his now locked down PC.  He was happy that he didn't lose his pictures and stuff.  Yes, would have done the Win 7 thing but that was not an option so his Win 10 is now good enough for his needs.

Now, on the home front.  The MacBook of late 2006 vintage was a BootCamp Windows Insider test laptop.  Did put an SSD in it but it is maxed out at OS X 10.7.5 and it runs faster than most of the Dell laptops also used for Insider testing here.  However, decided to "Retire" the BootCamp Windows 10 to the released 1803, 17134.81.  Used Media Creation Tool to bring down what I thought was the released Win 10 but it installed as 1803, 17134.1.  Found that there is an update, KB400403, which I downloaded and installed.  Now it is at the normal 1803 release level.  Did all of the lock down procedures from above as well as a CCleaner run.  Now the challenge is to withdraw the PC from Insider mode.  I'm led to believe that the withdrawal procedure can take a few weeks.  Just another adventure on "The Crap Trail."

PS:  Windows 10 Insider Preview releases ran the cleanest and fastest on the Apple MacBook.  :thumbup

Personally, I think we should be petitioning those authorities who have whitelisted MS' and Akamai's IP ranges as trusted to remove them from those whitelists.

Interesting proposal.  It brings to mind some of Tom Clancy's books that focus on a governmental "Net Force" that is directed to correct such allegedly illegal practices.  There are quite a few voters in this country that plan to do some personnel changes in our government this voting season.  Some of the current staff seems to think that such practices are under control of the highest bidder.

In the mean time, spreading the word as you have is the start.  Many people have already decided not to use the "Worst Crap Ever" as an operating system.  I helped a friend stay on Windows 7 that had some real problems.  Malwarebytes found 3079 "malware files" on the PC, the most I've ever seen at one time.  Uninstalled a program that was causing windows explorer to abort/crash.  Also, did fundamental security blocking with Ghostery on the browsers.  This forum has had great solutions from people to lock down Win 10 to keep the issues you mentioned to a minimum or to zero.  I prefer the "powered off" secure mode on the Win 10 test PC.

You make....in my opinion....some valid points and that is why I am so negative towards Windows 10 or should I say Microsoft as a company...not forgetting the fact that all the crap with windows 10 and how it was being pushed on us...only came to light because of the diligence of those who actually read the agreements that anyone upgrading to Windows 10 were saying (not knowingly) that Microsoft have the right to spy on so that the American government have an extra weapon against us.....

Of course my ramblings could be taken as paranoia....but my response to that would have to be....isn't that a typical trait of the American government...

    Sorry....getting off track there....;)

An interesting evaluation of corporation and government tracks, libertarian is a word that comes to mind.  With MS, the apparent solution is don't use the product or change the product so that it can't do the allegedly illegal software tasks.  I like the thought that payment for the use of owned hardware is a viable concept.  Keep an eye on the government elections this year.  In the US trenches, there seems to be a change occurring.  Similarly, that may be why so many people are changing the company that they use to get their computers.  There also seems to be more software available to throttle what information comes and goes to their computers.  Remember, secure mode is "powered off."

You are my hero!  I only do serious Windows stuff on the Windows 7 Pro Latitude with the SSD.  The Windows 10 PC only gets to stay up long enough to check Insider Mail and then back to secure mode, powered off.  I have trouble understanding why anyone would want to use Windows 10 as a production PC but then many people don't understand why our production computer is an iMac with both Apple and Microsoft software installed (It just works.).  Too busy to b***h but I laugh a lot. (US politics is comedy central.)  Probably running Windows 10, too.

Just curious:  Has the government there switched back to Windows 7 or are they still trying to use Windows 10?   I agree, someONE does???!!!

I think there is a Windows 10 government here.  Seems to be a lot of crap.

  8. The crap churns on.  Win 10 Pro Insider Preview just updated from 17074 to 17074.1002 in the 4 hour range on the Dell laptop.  The software is working (starts, restarts, shuts down and powers up).  Just another clean update.  In secure mode now, powered off.

    *************

Just after 17074.1002 completed, 17083 Updated cleanly as well.  Even Windows Defender worked on the Dell with 17083, even though other people said that Windows Defender was trash???!!! A different sort of crap.  Back to secure mode.  :D

You will never convince me that this s*** is worth having!

Very well put!  I will help people with W10 so that they can do emails or use browsers but no way will I trust my home computer to be running OS s***.  My home Windows PCs are Win 7 Pro if the need arises.

However, I wonder if the Insider Updates are running differently?  Over the past 7 updates, I've not lost the multiple users or browser functionality with an extension like Ghostery on the W10 test Dell laptop.  Something appears to be working intrusively destructive with the released W10 updates?  It seems that other vendors are not providing updated or compatible drivers or software to keep up with new W10 releases.  Compatible apps seem to be problematic as well.

Thanks Bookie32 to keep us focused on the issue.  You are the "score keeper."  :D:)

can't winblows 10 with latest ... whatever big upgrade be converted to ISO
just to be normal offline install ?

At the point of the update/upgrade where it asks or tells it is ready to "Restart", by not doing the restart then, an ISO can be made from a file.  That ISO can be used to do the "normal offline install." I don't know the file name, but the procedure is out there on the internet someplace.

  11. Unusual W10 Crap: Why has Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview, 17074, installed cleanly in about 3 hours on the Dell laptop?  With the Restart" to complete the update, one has the path to go back to the previous instead or going forward (Maybe that is not even a good choice).  It's still W10 but some parts seem to be working. Beware, beware!?

Anyone know if it's possible to obtain Windows 10 store applications on Windows 7? Freaking Microsoft...

Another example of a situation that has reduced the "Good Will" value of MS. The sun is bright today in Sun City, AZ, no snow, and it is warm.  Just got oranges off the tree for a snack.  It would be nice if someone would write a program to emulate Windows 10 on Windows 7 to fix your issue.

I don' t think that after you saved three weeks wages to buy an iPhone you would - on a whim - buy an Apple TV or an Apple Watch. :dubbio:

    jaclaz

iPhone 7 Plus:  The rest of the story:  While going to the Apple Store to look at computers I checked out the new iPhones in the store over a year before I bought one.  The marketing seed was planted.  May not have bought a new iPhone if I hadn't gone into the Apple store for a different reason.  Customer "Good Will" is actually carried on a companies books with a cash value.  Free iPhone battery replacement would show up on the company books as "Good Will."  Bad press subtracts from the company "Good Will" thereby lowering the company value which is what has happened with the battery issue.

The title of this forum thread is an example of the bad press that has reduced MS W10 "Good Will."

Sure. :), particularly (gullible :w00t::ph34r: and) high income Apple customers .

Partly, a good description, gullible, yes.  I had to go to the Apple Store and take a free course to learn how to turn the iPhone 4S on and off.  When the Phone started to run slow, went back to the Apple Store and found out that 34 programs were running in the background that I thought were stopped.  Learned how to really stop the programs then so none ran in the background.  Didn't go to Apple for the battery because of the price (ordered the battery and free tools online for $20).  High income Apple customer?  Bought the maxed out iPhone 7 Plus to replace the 4S with 3 weeks wages working as a custodian part time.  Actually make more money as a custodian than being a computer technician at a middle school in Arizona, also part time.  Maybe gullible again but the Apple products just work for me whereas Windows products, hardware wise, don't come close.  Still, 2018 is beginning as an exciting year!

  15. Sometimes it seems that the "Worst Crap" comes from management or marketing decisions.  If an iPhone has a battery with a life of 2 years, don't mess with the software and the logical solution is to replace the battery after the 2 years for free. Or use the other solution and replace the battery yourself for $20 with a product that also included the necessary tools.  If I could do the battery replacement on an iPhone 4S in less than 15 minutes, wouldn't a trained technician at an Apple store do it more efficiently? And it would have brought the customers into the store where they may have bought something else!   The marketing plus would far outweigh the negative press brought about by the current decisions.

Even though more computers seem to be running Windows 10 better, The aura of "Windows 10 Worst Crap Ever" continues.  While the aura of "Windows 7 Pro works great" also continues.  I guess the money from data mining, telemetry and "Big Brother" control may influence some company decisions.  Technical comedy! :D

  16. The question is a good one:  Why does the old MacBook run Windows 10 better and faster than a modern PC even if Apple implies that this unsupported combination probably shouldn't work?  The next question is: Why don't all Surface PCs run Windows 10 better than any other computer running Windows 10?  The follow-on question is:  Why are computer manufacturers still having computers build in China after the "bad capacitor on the motherboards and power supplies" of 10 to 15 years ago fiasco?

well, as for any cheapish tech, it works for some, hit n miss stuff.

Thanks for the New Years chuckle.  My cheapish tech, 10 year old MacBook bought at a resale store for $20, runs Windows 10 faster and more reliably than newer PC computers.  The not so cheapish tech, 7 year old iMac at $4,000, runs MS Office more reliably than PCs I've worked with plus all the Apple software that PCs won't run.  However, the tech in the iMac is still more technologically current than the tech in most PCs for sale now in stores.  Twice blessed with "hits."

Another New Year chuckle to consider:  a couple of people have brought there Windows 10 PCs that weren't working for them over to the SunMac (Apple) Club in town on a "walk in for help" day and we helped them get get their W10 computer usable for them.  The local PC Club didn't help them, something about customer service. :)

2018 is starting out to be a fun year.  Am expecting a lot of crap.

To be fair ;) a more extensive one is "broken piece of crap, increasingly more broken at each upgrade/update, broke (again)"

    jaclaz

As well, "to be fair"; All of the last 6 Insider Preview W10 updates installed error free on the Dell laptop and the OS ran with no crashes.  All browsers with Ghostery included ran with no problems.  If W10 didn't have the lack of control issue and the data mining issue and the "big brother" security issues, I might consider using the product for other than a test system.

Piece of crap broke on me again! Windows 10 suddenly broke on my laptop with no explanation! Doing rollbacks and such aren't helping.

I need to downgrade to Windows 7...

Actually, Windows 7 Pro is an Upgrade!  Windows 7 Pro has never failed since it was installed on a Dell Latitude E5410 over 3 years ago.  No updates are allowed unless I select a specific one.

"Piece of crap broke" is a good description of W10.  The Insider test computer has no W10 issues when it is shutdown.  The Windows 7 Pro dual-boot on the test computer works just fine as well.

  20. Happy Windows 10 Insider Prerelease Holidays:  The Dell laptop got the 17063, Win 10 Pro Update and installed it with no issues in a little over 3 hours.  The "Other Forum" indicated that some Surface PCs couldn't get the prerelease to install. I would think that an MS PC would have no issues installing MS software.  Not withstanding the W10 design faults mentioned in previous entries, this prerelease works well with at least 5 browsers that all have Ghostery installed, even Edge.  Now if the MS developers would just read the issues identified in this particular Forum Thread and correct the "Design Faults, " the crap might turn.  It's probably a political thing.  Mentioning politics, 2018 should be an exciting year in which there will be a lot of laughs.  Even operating system software development provides many laughs.  Laughs seem to be the "good" in this "Worst Crap Ever!"

    Nicely put!

Have you noticed any computer service degradation at places that you shop?  Like: "The computer is slow today." or "Wait, we needed to reboot the PC." or "The PC won't start."  When I hear these comments, my first thought is that the computer system was updated to Win 10.  US politics are sort of like W10 these days.  Many people are voting for Win 7, replace the Win 10's, as a result of the situation to get back to some stable politics (An analogy). :cool:

  22. Is an OEM Windows 10 Key worth the $15-$30 from online sellers?  Just thinking of changing a test Win 10 to a standard Win 10 with the Key change.  Don't seem to be able to find a real Full Win 10 Key online.  Don't know if this is a Deeper Impression or a slap in the face?
