    Wow, I thought I could get used to not having Aero Glass in time but without it I just keep losing windows over the top of other windows.  Not only that, but some window chrome looks different than others.  We know that'll be the case with Apps vs. Applications, but I'm also seeing it e.g., with the Pale Moon browser vs., e.g., a CMD window.  The former has a dimmer single line of blue pixels around it than the latter when the window is current.  Why is it so much to ask just to be able to see where the window edges are?

    I hate mediocrity.

    Would Winaero Tweaker be any help? It does have boarder controls.

  2. It is strange that according to the update site, since version 18363.720, there have not been any changes to the 1909 release, just to the 1903 release.

    " Improvements and fixes

    Windows 10, version 1909

    This non-security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:

    This build includes all the improvements from Windows 10, version 1903.

    No additional issues were documented for this release."

    that from site https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4522355/windows-10-update-kb4522355

    Thx for confirming this @UCyborg:(
    Sad to hear... So much of my desktop experience is in Chrome-based browser and app windows (I'm sure this is also true for many others).
    This makes me think twice now about using (and waiting months) for delayed Aero-Glass updates.
    -JT

    The \\chrome\flag has always been for experimental features and states that they can be removed at any time. This is not the fault of aeroglass.

    The work around of using chrome in compatibility win 8 mode allows for the caption bar to be changed and does not change how chrome functions as a browser. As for the boarder issue, winaero tweaker has been a solid and stable program for many years and has the ability to control many of the metrics of the windows. Would it be nice if there was a registry fix that permanently addressed this like the fix for allowing flash to be remembered? Certainly, but it appears that it cannot.

    We who use Aero-glass are those who want to have some control of how our desktop environment looks, which is bucking the 'norm' of simply accepting windows as Microsoft has envisioned it for us. Patience and waiting has always been a part of it. @Bigmuscle works on Aero-glass when he has spare time to work on it, it is not his 'bread and butter'. If coding a program like Aero-glass was easy then there would be others doing it also.

    @Wolfshadow Curious - Where did you read that the flag functionality will end with Chrome v76?

    On your link page:

     5  chrome/browser/flag-metadata.json

    @@ -3179,11 +3179,6 @@

    "owners": [ "//device/vr/OWNERS", "xr-dev@chromium.org" ],

    "expiry_milestone": 76

    },

    {

    "name": "windows10-custom-titlebar",

    // "owners": [ "your-team" ],

    "expiry_milestone": 76

    As all the flags are purely experimental, they are subject to being removed at any time. They allow functionality for a time and then remove it later. Removing the /flag is easy but removing all the function code takes time.

    Apparently my assumptions were incorrect, and so is this thread's title. I searched through Chromium's commit history and found out only the option in chrome://flags was removed, the functionality is still intact and can be invoked using a command line parameter, see here.

    So one must add --disable-features=Windows10CustomTitlebar parameter to Chrome's shortcut properties, at the end of the Target field on the Shortcut tab.

    61pS3UV.png

    This method doesn't have any undesired side effects like running in compatibility mode has.

    If I read the link info correctly, the functionality of the flag will end with chrome version 76. hopefully someone will figure out a registry hack to use like the "allow flash always on" that allows not having to shoose ecery time you need flash on a site.

    Here's a solution for one remaining issue with the new command-line fix...  @UCyborg

    If your Chrome browser is set to start in the background automatically with windows (for certain extensions like Hangouts, etc.), Here's how one can edit the Chrome Registry AutoLaunch Command Line:

    • Open Regedit.exe and navigate to the following key :  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    • Find the Sting Named: "GoogleChromeAutoLaunch_......"  and right-click to modify the command line to add the new parameter:
    • (here's what mine looked like when finished)
      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --no-startup-window --disable-features=Windows10CustomTitlebar /prefetch:5

    Now Chrome will autostart in the background with the AeroGlass compatible title bars. :cool:
    -JT

    Also another issues is in html short cuts. By editing this key, it will allow aero when you double click any site shortcuts you may have saved.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ChromeHTML\shell\open\command
        (default)                REG_SZ                                   "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-features=Windows10CustomTitlebar -- "%1"

    I installed this program to try it out, and didn't like the effect, so I ran the uninstaller. It refused to uninstall, something about 'C:\AeroGlass\uninst000.dat' not existing, so I forcibly deleted the C:\AeroGlass folder, as well as the task in the Task Scheduler. However, after restarting my computer, I found that the Start Menu was completely broken, pressing the button does nothing. Cortana and the Timeline view also cease to work, and I can no longer open any default Win 10 'metro' style apps like the default Photos app. I have a single restore point which takes me back to before I forcibly deleted AeroGlass, and returning to it restores Start Menu functionality. After much troubleshooting I found that the issue lies in deleting the 'DWMGlass.dll' and 'dbghelp.dll' files under C:\AeroGlass. If either of these are deleted, the Start Menu breaks. For a little while I lived with just those two files sitting in that folder, but when the new Win 10 update came along, it completely broke my Start Bar functionality, even when those files were there.

    TLDR; AeroGlass has completely trashed my Start Bar functionality with any attempt to uninstall it. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this program without ruining my Start Bar?

    Hi CarteMoir,

    This will sound odd, but reinstall AeroGlass.

    Now navigate to C:/AeroGlass/

    Inside this folder should be like the picture I attached. If the uninst000.dat file is there, try to uninstall normally or just run the uninst000.exe file directly.

    On the start menu issue, try googling 'repair win10 start menu' . I have had to do this in the past, and usually find a owrk around to repair it.

    Hope this helps

  8. If you  have never used the program Winaero Tweaker which is free, It has controls for border sizes as well as many other attributes of windows.

    It can be seen and downloaded here: https://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.1836

    I have used it for many years and has helped tweak many settings on all windows versions.

  9. Nope, I don't have Search or Cortana at all.

    I watched carefully.  It's the Settings App starting in the background with the command line:

    "C:\WINDOWS\ImmersiveControlPanel\SystemSettings.exe" -ServerName:microsoft.windows.immersivecontrolpanel

    I'll figure out whether that's a scheduled task or what.  It causes the Settings App to remain running, though Suspended.  I don't want it running at all unless I ask for it.

    -Noel

    Using Ccleaner under the 'Startup', go to the tab 'Scheduled' in advanced mode. There are a ton of items under Microsoft such as the notifications that might be running in the background. You can selectively disable them temporarily to see if it stops this. I am not running Modernframes.dll because of this, but might give it another go.

  10. From my understanding: The .layout file is just metadata. It instructs Big Muscle's software on the specifics of loading and applying the contents of the .png file to the current system. Without that metadata, it uses the information the current system build requires.

    A key aspect of this is that with the proper .layout file contents, an older PNG file - such as one extracted from Windows 8 Release Preview - can be used with a new system - such as Windows 10 build 10240.

    What I don't know - and it's a testament to my own ignorance - is how he creates the .layout file from the DWM processes on a given system. Perhaps he added some code to his own software to print information in the debug.log.

    Big Muscle, would it be possible for you to derive and publish the entire .layout file that goes with Win 10 build 10240 when using a theme atlas that matches a STREAM resource that's been extracted from the Windows 10 build 10240 aero.msstyles?

    -Noel

    So the layout file and png should be in the C:\AeroGlass folder to work I am assuming. And it would be of interest on how the layout file is generated.

    I know there is a windows app for layout, but cannot figure how it works, as it does not recognize the file to open it.

  11. bigmuscle,

    I am running the 11/17 build now.

    I am testing on both win 10 9879 and win 8.1.1. on dual boot machine with 64-bit versions.

    With both, I have no debug log for today, and believe aerohost is not running at startup at all.

    In win 10, trying to execute aerohost brings up the warning strip to contact developer, etc...

    In win 8, it does not execute at all.

  12. I'm sorry, maybe I just misunderstood you. Just had weird day today, I totally drove mad after several days of trying to make work new work laptop with Win8 :wacko::blink:

    NP...I just bought the wife a new laptop with windows 8.1 installed....she still pines for XP....lol.

    Fixed it right though. Start Is Back and AeoGlass....now she's happy...haha

  13. Huh, I do not understand the problem - you install debug version and then complain that it displays debug window? Maybe, I should select the testers more carefully next time.

    Not complaining about debug screen, just information of how it is working. With the donation key in windows 8.1 I have a watermark, but no watermark in windows 10 with a donation key. I expected the debug screen when windows is loaded, but wanted to report the DWM debug dialog box showing before the dual boot screen loads which would be an oddity would it not?

    This started to happen when I installed the 9600_9860pre-1414185002 files in windows 10 9860 build. It happens only at a cold boot up but does not happen during a warm/restart boot.

    I am sorry if you feel that you misplaced your trust in me as a tester. I felt you would like to know if it worked properly or if it did not. :huh:

  14. So far, new release is working in release 9860.

    Using it on windows 8.1update 1, it is running, however it is displaying the debug window and the watermark. I have the donation.key and it is not displaying the machine code dialog.

    On an interesting note, I have a dual boot setup and the debug screen will also display just before the dual boot screen. This happens on a cold boot, but not during a restart boot.

  15. My laptop is running 32 bit true color and aero is working fine Noel. I don't think you will have a problem. I am using NVidia drivers, the latest one.

    I also have worked in Photoshop with 32 bit indexed images without a problem.

    Not sure what ATI is eluding to with the 30 bit support....
