Try Firefox3.6.28. It renders websites MUCH BETTER than opera 12.02. Youtube works better, newer versions of flash work better, the latest version of ad-block plus works, flash games work, ect. I went from having a 80% chance of a cite working to 99% its work the change. ( Yes sound cloud is one of them )

I put my laziness aside and did it the inf way.( to only find out it brought me right back to the .exe
but this time it worked). Though honestly I still cant figure out why I didnt do it that way the first time. (Also do you know where I can get Ink)

It may say that but it doesn't actually have the usb driver. When you run the installer and click usb it says that this isnt the driver and you should remove the disk and ect, ect. (trust me I have been searching for two days) There is a certain driver I'm looking for called the HP DeskJet 970 Series Printer Driver v2.3.2 FOR HOME USERS - USB Connection. (You can check their website) So you did get me the wrong driver but I really cant blame you though cause it is asinine to put usb drivers if you cant use them.

In any case I can see how vast is the gratitude that you express for the time I wasted trying to help you.Congratulations you just gave me the driver I did not ask for. The one you gave me was for LPT1 port . I needed USB port. The problem was solved though by putting my 98 hard drives into a Pentium 3 i had which had the LPT1 port.

I have a HP deskjet 970cxi but windows 98 will not connect to by usb. Any suggestions. (I have the driver for it)
***NOTE- I'm not sure if the driver is for the usb i found it off of cnet.

I think the biggest problem for windows 98 now was the 512 mb RAM limit and the 137 gig HD limit but that has already been broken.

Windows 98 is a resilient OS and unlike windows vista ,7 or 8 its not dumbed down and automatically does it. You actually have to do something
. (also people like to tweak stuff)If it ain't broke DON'T FIX IT.

There are posts here that solve the ram issue.( rloew) And the CPU depends I dont think it would be an issue though cause my computer was built for XP and runs 98 like a charm.

sorry for replying to an old post but you can always try a free program called advanced uninstaller pro. Its current version is 11.20 it supports windows Xp-8 unfortunately but I'm sure its possible for it to work in 9x if you tweak it I mean look at people did with 9x today. anyway though I used it before and found it great at removing software I thought I would just post a link here for people to try it and see if it fixes the program issues with Norton. http://www.advanceduninstaller.com/soft/uninstaller/Advanced_Uninstaller11.exeAs some of you will know, the normal uninstall for SAV still leaves behind lots of files and registry settings, which is why the removal tool was created.

Alright I will check the router setting when I get back from vacation.Check the firmware settings that the router firewall is actually enabled and for manually opened ports. Or you can re-flash it or reset it and start over. Either way you need to drag a fine-toothed comb through the router settings. It helps to search the exact model in Google for administration tips. And make sure you disabled universal PnP on the router and also the service in Windows ( this is one way for router ports to be opened from software despite the router ). Oh yeah, make sure she is not using an Admin account.
The Windows firewalls are crap but better than nothing I guess. From an Admin account on her PC, check for exclusions ( these are easily added by software ).
P.S. Remember that if you remove Norton or McAfee ( in order to install something else ) to use their specific cleaners after the normal uninstall.
. It just turns out she is good at getting viruses , which just proves my point that the security goes to the user because my windows 98se computer which uses the same router hasn't had a single virus . (Others came to the same conclusion and I wasn’t the first to so dont yell at me please)

How did her computer physically connect? Was there a router with working hardware firewall?
It is connected wirelessly to a router by an usb antenna. She uses Norton but I used Malwarebytes to remove the viruses. (The firewall is a router firewall and windows 7 firewall)

is a Win98 system safer, or less safe, or equally safe from those kinds of threats as a modern PC?

I would say equal since a big part of security goes down to the user like just today I pulled "120 VIRUSES" off my mothers computer which is running windows 7. This isn't the first time that happened to her the most she ever got was two years ago which was OVER 300 VIRUSES.

I would still use virus data base since we dont know how a particular program would work on an old computer. (it would most likely fail but I would rather be safe than sorry)

Well, for the web you should install NoScript (still supported, current version 2.6.7.1) and Adblock Plus (last version 1.3.10, but still usefull) in your browser !! (Or similar apps, of course)
I am visiting sometimes doubtful websites ;-) but with these apps running I never had a problem.
The latest versions of adblock or adblock plus work if your using opera 12.02. (kernel ex required)

, this is one of those topics you cannot touch without starting a flame war if you are looking for "popularity" you may want to start a poll, otherwise what you will get will be "anecdotal evidence", about people that is running Windows 9x without any form of antivirus and never got one, but you cannot base yourself on that, as you cannot know how "smart", "knowledgeable" and "attentive" the user is, it is well possible that his/her activities on the PC are "low risk" and that that is the reason for the apparent lack of security failures.jaclaz

I agree with you. Opera 11.xx is much better than 12.xx. I only switched because my favorite add-on did not work in Opera 11 so I switched to 12.02. Ad-block worked but more issues arose when I upgraded from flash 9 to 11. It didn't help that 12.02's java script didn't work properly but because of flash 11 now Ad-block didn't work nor the Youtube windows resizer. So I decided to switch browsers and my only real options were Firefox and Opera. Firefox 10 was a huge mistake and was the reason why I went to Opera in the first place for it crashed like crazy so I tried the latest version of Firefox 3.xx which I loved for it actually worked. For me Firefox 3 is not slow or unresponsive though not as quick as Opera was. Though if I can get Opera to work properly I would go back so I'm going to try what you did/recommend so I may re add it to my box.
**NOTE** The reason why Firefox isn't horribly lagged is because I have no-script, ad-block plus, and element hiding helper for ad-block plus.
