  1. Have you tried updating the motherboards BIOS to the latest version? Try using the PC outside the case for some time to see if the issue can (hopefully not) occur even without the front panel headers being involved.
  2. "unofficial" refers to inclusion of non-free binary firmware blobs for some hardware (you would know that if you read the info there), here's the official version (Debian Buster is Debian 10): https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/archive/10.10.0/i386/iso-dvd/ In fact, the latest Debian version (11, bullseye) still has the i386 version as sparty411 points out: https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/i386/iso-dvd/ Official Debian website still prominently shows i386 as one of the available versions: https://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/index.en.html Sorry for the off-topic, but dencorso is incorrect regarding Debian and 32-bit version availability.
  3. Umm, but Debian still has a i386/x86 version though? https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/archive/10.10.0+nonfree/i386/iso-dvd/
  4. Newest NVIDIA GPU drivers for 9x do contain the most amount of bugs in games (and not only games, say hello to the broken uninstaller ). Definitely try earlier versions. As for the performance decrease, from what I know, it doesn't apply much to the 6 and 7 series. Mostly because there's no earlier driver versions to compare with so don't have to worry about that. The 6 and 7 series GPUs are much more powerful than FX and older series so even if drivers were to decrease performance, it wouldn't be so noticeable in day-to-day gaming.
  5. WineD3D does not work on 98SE/ME, believe me I've tried Haven't tried Mesa3D but I don't have high hopes for it either, considering that OpenGL on 98SE/ME is limited to version 2.0 using NVIDIA drivers and 1.5 using ATI drivers further complicating things. Just because you can drop a DLL of the same name to emulate new things, doesn't mean it will work on 98SE/ME. Depending on games you want to play and luck, SwiftShader might be the only thing working on 98SE/ME for you, at least its demo apps worked on 98SE/ME from what I've tested.
  6. Extract COMCTL32.DLL from setup CAB files are replace the existing one in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Or, just install the English version of ActiveSync.
  7. That's a second WiFi card you've tried that should work in 98SE (there are drivers for them for 98SE), yet it doesn't for you. I am feeling this might be laptop's fault and not 98SE. It would be great if you could test those WiFi card on a different laptop with a MiniPCI slot, this way we could check if it's the laptop fault, or the cards fault. If you're looking for a laptop with good 98SE compatibility, look for an Intel 855 chipset.
  8. Best option would be to buy a GeForce 6200/6600/6800 or 7000 series PCI-E GPU, or a Radeon X300/X550/X600/X1050 (slow), X700/X800/X850 (fast) PCI-E GPU, and use Linux together with QEMU passthrough like someone did here: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=72401 If you are looking for a way without buying anything? Sorry, but that's not possible. If I knew a way to virtualize/emulate a decent GPU for 98SE, I would have know it by now. That would have saved me from spending money on building a powerful 98SE PC. I know my game.
  9. This ThinkPad is too new for 98SE, forget about it. The newest ThinkPads compatible with 98SE are the T42/T42p/R51, and similar ones with Intel 855 chipset. Basically most ThinkPads first released in 2004 or earlier, not after.
  10. When using WDM Audio Drivers in 98SE/ME, the manufacturers of audio drivers will always use builtin sbemul.sys SB emulator driver for the MS-DOS window inside Windows. That's what Microsoft told audio driver manufacturers to do. The sbemul.sys emulator driver is far from perfect, having many, many issues like those described above. I was never satisfied with its capabilities. This only applies to DOS window inside Windows, not real DOS mode where you need to provide proper DOS audio drivers if they are available. When using VXD Audio Drivers in 95/98SE/ME, manufacturer of the audio driver will provide their own SB emulator driver, which you can usually see as an additional device in Device Manager. They should have better SB emulation, but it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. VXD drivers are usually called Windows 95 and Windows 98 non-SE/Gold drivers. With AC'97 cards, you can try Realtek Windows 95 (VXD) drivers if the device ID is supported by it: https://soggi.org/drivers/realtek.htm There are also VIA VXD drivers available on the internet if you have a VIA AC'97 device. Sadly, Joaquim's device ID is not available in those so he can't use them. I've checked it. If you want somewhat adequate DOS sound support under Windows 98 SE, ditch WDM and go for VXD drivers if available. Not in this case. If you want better DOS sound support, ditch Windows all together and find real-mode DOS drivers for your audio card if available. Not in this case. If you want the best DOS sound support, get a real ISA Sound Blaster card He can't since he's using a laptop. His best option, if his laptop had a printer port, would be to use OPL3LPT (expensive) https://www.serdashop.com/OPL3LPT. His laptop (Acer Aspire 1690) sadly doesn't have one. I know Joaquim is very determined to get the maximum out of his laptop under Windows 98, and I admire his dedication, but he must understand that his laptop has too many issues that can;t be resolved and that his laptop is not suitable for DOS gaming, especially with regards to sound. It's just too new for these things. If you have the budget, get a cheap Pentium 4 Socket 478 PC and put a cheap Sound Blaster Live SB0100/SB0060 PCI card there and follow this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x6T_OWT0WU You'll be happy. If you want a laptop, get one that is older and has a DOS compatible sound card (basically anything that is NOT AC'97 or HD Audio!) I myself also would like for everything to work under Windows 98, but even I have to draw a line somewhere, and believe me, I was as determined as Joaquim!
  11. This is one of many works of the famous Neil Cicierega, nothing wrong with that or him, it's all just fiction and art and nothing that the author truly believes in, chill out
  12. Never had any issues installing XP from USB using WinSetupFromUSB. Choose your USB Stick, check 'Auto Format', select NTFS. Check Windows XP, point to unpacked XP setup files, and go!
  13. Seeing as Windows ME does not have this issue, it might be possible to actually fix it for 98SE. But yes, buying the cheapest router from TP-Link or something, dedicated only to 98SE machines, is a better and more flexible solution. Used cheap routers are abundant and cost not much more than a few bags of chips and some soda
  14. Are you using VBEMP or the stock VGA.DRV driver? Try using SVGA driver from Win3.1 in Safe Mode like here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/69569-improving-windows-98-safe-mode Can you try a different motherboard?
  15. It seems VirtualBox authors are not keen on addressing the issue, and just tell users to use AC'97 on Windows XP: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=38886 https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/16609 Can you provide the device ID for the HD Audio that VirtualBox emulates?
  16. Latest AMD GPU supported on XP is HD 7970 / 8970 OEM / R9 280X (all three have same device ID).
  17. Take a look here: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Commodore_64_emulators As for the issue in topic, try putting all files from all disks to one giant folder and install from that folder using DOS...unless that's what you tried already. I know this trick works for Windows 3.1, not sure at all about older versions. You can also try different Windows 1 versions from WinWorld for example, maybe they behave differently. (like 1.04) I don't have any meaningful experience with Windows prior to 3.1, as there's no practical reason to use anything older than 3.1...unless someone really wants to stick to the 8088
  18. Use 86Box or PCem for having fun with such old Windows versions. Both programs can emulate period-correct real hardware that Windows 1.01 will be happy to work with. This will make for a much better and fun experience than just forcing it to run on a real hardware. Also look here for some fun you can have with Windows 1: http://toastytech.com/guis/win1x2x.html
  19. DOSSOUND is not a DOS driver for AC'97/HD Audio! It's just a custom interface/API to play WAV files (with example programs included), it doesn't work with any existing DOS programs as it does not provide any Soundblaster/OPL interface that programs can use. Useless in your case. There are no DOS drivers for AC'97/HD Audio! If there's no option to add some kind of a sound card like on a laptop (and if there's no LPT port to use something like OPL2LPT), best bet is to...use DOSBox under Windows 98 SE (as stupid as this idea sounds, I know )
  20. I see that you've bought a wifi card that I recommended. It's weird that you don't have any networks listed. As others said, try the new wifi card using Windows 2000 or XP and see if the networks show up there. You can also try Debian from the Linux side of things. The "File is not installed" text in Device Manager is normal, I have it as well and Wi-Fi works fine regardless. Try also this older drivers for Windows 9x and see if the networks show up in Odyssey, maybe the latest one doesn't work with all Atheros cards... Also, have you connected the antennas to the WiFi card? Driver.zip
  21. http://ftp.unicamp.br/pub/apoio/iexplorer/ie60sp1/ie60sp1.zip This seems to be a Portuguese version of IE6 SP1, try it.
  22. I haven't found a solution for the long startup time when a USB pendrive is connected. Is it really stuck for you, or just takes a long time to start up? I haven't encountered USB pendrives making 98SE unbootable.
  23. https://www.allbootdisks.com/download/98.html https://www.allbootdisks.com/download/me.html Use the "No Ramdrive" versions.
