  1. azagahl:

Does anyone know where these DLL's come from? I didn't get them from SP2.0b3 or 98SE2ME.

    msvcirt.dll 6.10.8637.0 6/8/2000 5 PM 77877 bytes

    msvcrt.dll 6.10.9844.0 6/19/2003 12 AM 286773 bytes

    rpcltccm.dll 4.71.3328 3/29/1999 12 AM 26896 bytes

These are the newest versions as far as I know:

msvcirt.dll = from WinME, installed by 98SE2ME [you can tell by the date/time stamp]

    msvcrt.dll = from Win2000 SP4, installed by Gape's Win98SE SP 1.6.2 [for some reason Gape removed it from SP 2.0 betas :(]

    rpcltccm.dll = from + installed by MS DCOM98 + by Gape's Win98SE SP 1.6.2 + 2.0 beta 2 + 3 [you can tell by the date/time stamp]

  2. Gape:

I have a question for all: I think I'll add new desktop icons feature as a seperate DLL, and it will be optional. What do you think? Is it OK?

    Sounds great.

Better to provide an icon library everybody can choose different icons from, than to hex files people may not be comfortable using.

BTW: This guy has about 6000 Windows icons in 1 zip [free]:

    ftp://ptb:sync@ftp.netcult.ch/download/IconCollection.zip

    His page:

  3. Gape:

RBUPDATE has two versions of MSDAIPP.DLL. One of them is for Windows 98 SE with Office 2000 or XP installed, the other is for Windows 98 SE without Office 2000 or XP installed.

Newest MSDAIPP.DLL build 11.0.6715.15 [brought up to XP SP2 version] from:

Microsoft Windows 98 SE/2000/ME/XP/2003 + Internet Explorer 4/5/6 Web Folders Update adds support for Secure Socket Layers (SSL), non-ASCII character encoding + additional security enhancements:

  4. tim_horton:

Theres over 6,014 Files in 98se the killer replacement adds 614 is there any more usefull me files that could be added like more core enhanements and such or does 614 just about cover the amount of Me usualbe files in me?

You need to understand that it doesn't matter how many files are on the WinME Setup CD, the only thing that matters is how many can ACTUALLY BE USED with Win98SE. :)

I've been doing this for almost 4 years, so I've pretty much reached the limit [615]. Even if it were 6000 or more, it doesn't matter.

All it matters is that the particular 615 *do* work with 98SE, and we should all be happy that they do, because this is the *only* way we can get a better/faster/etc 98SE. :)

I've spent countless hours testing just 1 or a small group of ME files on 98SE, and if they did work I've kept them, and then added them to my list.

That's how [if you have read the topic at my site] I came up with the NO-NO list [files you should NEVER replace].

    BTW:

If you want to see the full lists [in plain TXT format] of all Win9x/ME installation files contained inside the CABs, please go to this page, and then download this ZIP [171 KB].

    Hope this helps.

  5. To erpdude8:

Sorry, azagahl. You can only create a RAM disk up to 32 megabytes.

The ram disk driver (ramdrive.sys) allows creating ram drives no greater

    than 32 Mb.

That is only if using Microsoft RAMDRIVE.SYS, which is an obsoleted tool.

But there is a better one, called XMSDSK [Extended Memory Disk],

which can create a RAM disk up to 2 GB [limited of course, by your installed RAM amount ;)]:

    XMS/EMS RAMdisk v1.9i 16-bit DOS TSR improved Microsoft RAMDRIVE.SYS

    replacement for MS-DOS 5/6/7/8 + Windows 3.1x/9x/ME [74 KB, freeware]:

    http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/xmsdsk.zip

    XMS/EMS RAMdisk v1.9i with installer/uninstaller for Windows 9x/ME [114 KB,

    freeware]:

    ftp://planetbrown.einados.com/pub/ADMIN/ramdrive.exe

Loads and resizes the RAM drive (up to 2 GB) from AUTOEXEC.BAT or native

MS-DOS prompt. Does NOT shift drive letters. Includes two separate drivers:

XMSDSK.EXE (loads in extended RAM: requires an upper/extended memory manager

in CONFIG.SYS) and EMSDSK.EXE (loads in expanded RAM: requires EMM386.EXE

with the "RAM" switch or any other 3rd party expanded memory manager in

    CONFIG.SYS).

Uses 688 Bytes of upper DOS RAM if loaded with LOADHIGH in AUTOEXEC.BAT (upper

    memory manager required in CONFIG.SYS).

See "BROWSER CACHE IN MEMORY" for more info:

    http://www.mdgx.com/newtip12.htm#CACHRAM

    Hope this helps.

  6. Newer/updated versions for SP2:

    MSVCRT.DLL build 6.10.9844.0 [yours is 6.00.9782.0] from Windows 2000 SP4:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downl...rvicepacks/sp4/

MSVCIRT.DLL build 6.10.8637.0 [yours is 6.00.9782.0] from Windows ME Setup CD-ROM.

Older SOFTPUB.DLL build 5.131.1877.9 [yours is newer 5.131.1880.14 *but* it is from Windows 2000 Update and will *not* work properly under Win9x].

    Newer RPCRT4.DLL build 4.71.3336 [1.39 MB]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q269874.EXE

RPCLTCCM.DLL [same build you have but different file size] from Win98SE TCPIP/PPP Update [?], not from Windows ME Setup CD-ROM [which is the one you have].

All 4 files above [195 KB]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MSVCRT.ZIP

    Windows 98 SE USBHUB.SYS build 4.10.2227 Fix:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=306453

    Direct download [166 KB, English]:

    http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../306453usa8.exe

I have tested all these files with Win98 SE on my PC = they work OK.

    Hope this helps.

  7. Good idea to use BLA or BLE to time Win9x bootup routine.

    FYI:

BLE v1.3 [file above is older v1.1] is posted at author's web site:

    http://www.blueorbsoft.com/ble/

    Direct download [314 KB, freeware]:

    http://www.blueorbsoft.com/ble/BLE_Setup.exe

    How to use them:

    http://www.mdgx.com/newtip14.htm#SUYG

    BLA + BLE linked here:

    http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#BOO

  8. well it renamed it but it didn't allow me to place those files where they were sposed to and wouldn't boot or allow me to rename them back so i booted into xp,copied the new files where they were sposed to and here i am using those new files

Probably because your original files [uSER32.DLL + USER.EXE] in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM [default, generic is %windir%\SYSTEM] had the read-only and/or system and/or hidden attributes. If that was the case, the DOS COPY + MOVE commands would not allow replacing files with such attributes.

The fix is to run [from any DOS prompt after booting to Win98SE, no need to boot to another MS OS, and if you do, the %windir% variable applies *only* to that specific MS OS, in your case WinXP, and won't work as stated]:

    ATTRIB -H -R -S %windir%\SYSTEM\USER32.DLL

    and then:

    ATTRIB -H -R -S %windir%\SYSTEM\USER.EXE

Then you can replace those files only from native MS-DOS, *not* from within Win98SE GUI [see more details at the web page]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S

    Hope this helps.

  9. that sure is alot of steps

what are the advantages of adding this to 98 se?will it make it more stable?also could you do it and host it?

    Advantages?

Because WMP9 files from XP SP2 are *newer*, which means a lot of security holes + bugs have been fixed by MS in this build [this is noted at the web page].

    Do it and host it?

No, that would [probably] be illegal. :(

But it is legal to post instructions on how to do something like this for educational/personal purposes:

please see the rest of the topic at

    http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#KRM9S

In other words, what you do at home with your own computer is ok, as long as you legally own the software. :)

Although I do intend to host Gape's 98SE SP2 final when he's ready to post it.

    News flash [12-7-2004]:

MS just posted Windows 2003 SP1 RC1 [which includes HHU build 5.2.3790.1289], and I had to post HTML Help 1.41 Update (HHU) build 5.2.3790.1289 for Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE + NT4. :)

    HHU links [English only]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#HHU

    - Win98/98 SP1/98 SE HHU [701 KB]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/files/HHUPD.EXE

    - WinNT4 HHU [701 KB]:

    http://www.mdgx.com/files/HHUPDNT.EXE

    Enjoy.

  10. About the fixed REGEDIT.EXE for *all* Windows 95/OSR1/OSR2/98/98 SP1/98 SE(U) builds [NOT for WinME!]:

This bug and its fix are explained here:

    http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/regsmall.html

Instructions are not very clear, but the author implies that all regedit.exe versions are buggy, and reconstitution of registry in native/pure MS-DOS may break the registry DAT files if it contains *any* MS Office and/or Outlook keys.

As I recall from the modified regedit author's website:

    http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/regsmall.html

as quoted from his smallreg.rtf [part of smalreg4.zip]:

    http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~flibble/reg/Smalreg4.zip

"There is an additional undocumented regedit.exe bug that exists in both the Win95 and OSR2 versions of regedit.exe (as well as all versions of Win98 beta that have been released as of the writing of this procedure). This bug is the inability of regedit.exe to import keys that contain embedded control codes. Although, embedded control codes are very common in modem initialization strings, this bug may have gone unnoticed because many of these registry entries are automatically re-created (with the embedded control codes) the first time they are needed thus no functionality is lost or impaired. However, your registry may also have embedded control codes (such as LF or CR characters) in other registry keys that are not automatically re-created, such as the key used to hold your signature for MS Internet Mail and News or Outlook Express. If such keys are used in your system, after completing this procedure you will have to re-enter the missing data using the program that created the data originally, or you can download FIXREG written by Ben Jos Walbeehm, which is available at http://home.tampabay.rr.com/walbeehm/mrcode.html [not available anymore!].

This program will fix the missing embedded control code keys. The text file included in Ben Jos's fixreg.zip download package gives a more comprehensive description of this problem and the fix."

the buggy regedit [unmodified] cannot properly import certain reg keys that are terminated by CR or LF markers.

Although both authors (Smallreg's and Fixreg's) agree on the same problem, they have a contradictory opinion about Win98's regedit fixing (or not) this bug. :(

IMHO I recommend to *all* Win95/98 users to get the fixed regedit to avoid any problems.

There used to be more info at http://www.walbeehm.com/ [http://home.tampabay.rr.com/walbeehm/], but Ben Jos's site is gone. :(

I have Ben Jos's FixReg files [54 KB] for further reading:

    http://www.mdgx.com/files/FIXREG.ZIP
