  4. You're probably asking why I posted those commands twice...1. C:\WINDOWS [or your custom path if different] must be typed as actual path name in the Run... box [start menu]. The Run... box does not support environment variables. ;-( 2. You can type environment variables [like %windir%] in a DOS box. DOX boxes/sessions/windows support environment variables. Or even easier... create a DOS batch file with those lines [the ones from the DOS box] to do this every time you install/upgrade WMP/MPC/similar: @echo off %windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /RegUniv %windir%\INF\UNREGMP2.EXE /UpdateWMP REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMV8DS32.AX REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMVDS32.AX REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMADMOD.DLL REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMSDMOD.DLL REGSVR32.EXE /S %windir%\SYSTEM\WMVDMOD.DLL cls exit HTH

  6. I am beginning to build a web page for things that seem to have "fallen off the edge of the internet", and that I have legitimate copies of, so this looks like a prime candidate. The page can be found here: http://inkt.co.cc/5353/ . Hope that helps. Sorry for the ads on FileFactory.comJeff Thanks many, we've been expecting some1 to post these links. ___________________________ @all... 7. Edit (correct Intel driver + links): [thank you theshadowrunner for pointing out the confusion ] Hi every1, From what I'm aware the unofficial Intel SATA/AHCI/RAID motherboard-based controller fix for XP is not necessary anymore, because Intel finally enabled that feature natively in their drivers. Note: To install/test the Intel driver, it is recommended to uninstall/delete the unofficial driver (if any) first and then reboot. Unofficial driver fix installs its files into the %windir%\IAHCI [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS] folder. Just delete all those files and reboot. Therefore starting with Intel Storage Manager Driver version 9.6.0.1014 all one needs to do is: 1. Reboot. 2. Press Del, Esc, F1, F2, F3, F4 or F8 (see your motherboard documentation for specific key) to enter BIOS setup while your computer's initial POST (Power On Self Test) screen is still on -> change both settings below (if any) to match the values inside square brackets: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode [AHCI] SATA Port 0-3 Native Mode [Enabled] Both these settings must be enabled *before* installing the driver in order for Intel setup to properly recognize AHCI/RAID hardware. 3. Reboot back to Windows. 4. Install current Intel Storage Manager Driver from here [11.2 MB, multilanguage]. This driver installs iastore.sys and enables AHCI/RAID modes if enabled hardware is detected at install time. 5. Reboot 1 last time. This should (hopefully) work for every mobo based on Intel 9xx/3x/4x/5x chipset series. Please see Intel ReadMe text for more info. ... And just in case the official Intel driver doesn't work, I'm keeping the unofficial driver fix at my site. If any1 has problems with the mobo, SATA controllers or hard drives while AHCI is enabled, you can disable it easily: go back into BIOS setup and disable/change any of those 2 settings [see #2 above]. Could disable both, wont't hurt anything, but this feature requires both enabled, otherwise cannot work. PS: I was also getting BSODs and STOP errors in XP [especially with AHCI enabled] with my old mobo [Gigabyte P35-DS3L], took me a while to figure out what was wrong, turned out to be a faulty capacitor. ;-( I got a replacement [Gigabyte EP43-UD3L], and never looked back. Everything works 100% with or without AHCI enabled, even if overclocked. ;-) ___________________________________________ XP forums (super)mods... 11. The MS page says that the update is intended for Windows XP SP3. That implies that it is meant only for MS IE 6.0 SP3 installed by XP SP3 service pack. Because all other older SPs have been phased out, MS doesn't make fixes for those XP editions anymore. And BTW, files included in SP3 fixes are not compatible with MS IE 6.0 SP1 [98/98SE/ME/2000/XP RTM/XP SP1/XP SP1a/2003 RTM] or MS IE 6.0 SP2 [XP SP2]. HTH

  13. Have you checked this? Russian: http://paullee.ru/regstry.html Google Translate: http://translate.google.it/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fpaullee.ru%2Fregstry.html&sl=ru&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8 jaclaz Wow, Unicode support in native DOS. That must be a first... Thanks a lot for this great tool, did not know about it. Although, I don't think it helps much with the lack of support for complex/expanded/extended registry hex values, which unfortunately were not implemented in 9x OSes. Some expanded values can be written to the registry in 9x through INF or even REG files [will be seen as hex(7) eventually], but the actual information inside such values won't be read/interpreted properly. For example, values higher than hex(7) won't be "understood" at all. I think this needs a registry API update for 9x OSes [brought up to XP/2003 level, for example], and an updated tool to take advantage of those APIs, similar to reg.exe from 2000/XP/2003, eventually an updated regview.exe. Also, software that reads from/writes to the registry and might take advantage of complex reg values, needs to be made compatible with those reg APIs too. Best wishes, MDGx
  14. Microsoft says here (Spanish): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/551225/es to increase MaxInstance from 10 (default) to whatever the user wants, but they don't say what the max limit actually is. :-( Here (Spanish): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/551199/es English translation: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.microsoft.com%2Fkb%2F551199%2Fes&sl=es&tl=en they say MaxInstance default value is 8, and that the user can increase it, but again, no max value. [?] According to this MSKB article (Spanish), this works also for Win95 editions [increase from 8 to whatever]: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/550751/es More (actually less) info at MSDN (English): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff546329.aspx And finally, here (English): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/217744 MS actually enumerates the max values, but this contradicts with the other statements above. 15. I've tested those files under 98SE way back [2005], without KernelEx, only for the purpose of adding them to 98SE2ME. At the time they gave me errors, so I removed them. Whenever I manage to install VirtualPC 2007 + 98SE in virtual environment [hopefully soon], I'll test them again, with and without KEX.
  16. From what I know Win9x [95, 98 + ME] OSes do not support complex/expanded registry values, like REG_EXPAND_SZ, REG_LINK, REG_MULTI_SZ, REG_RESOURCE_LIST, REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR + REG_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST. Some of these values might be interpreted as binary [hex(3)] in 9x, but not correctly. More info here + here. Such values are properly understood, read from and written to only in WinNTx OSes: NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 + 7. REG.EXE command line tool from Win98 Resource Kit (RK) may be able to read [even if erroneously] some of these values, but to my knowledge is not able to write or modify such values properly. If one tries, reg values beyond hex(5) will be written improperly or not at all. There are rare cases when the registry can be corrupted by trying to write such complex/expanded values into the registry under 9x OSes. All REG.EXE versions from WinXP, Win2003 [%windir%\system32] + their respective RKs are fully aware of and support all these values 100%. Unfortunately we can't use reg.exe from XP/2003 under Win9x OSes, and I don't think KernelEx can help in this case, unless some1 with registry programming knowledge is willing to rewrite the entire reg.exe tool for use with 9x OSes. HTH
  17. Thanks for your feedback.I'm also in the middle of (re)installing VirtualPC 2007, in order to test 98SE2ME, because I know the Internet Game Zone (options 1, 2, 3 + 6) + MovieMaker (option 3) Start shortcuts .lnk creation process is defective at the moment. The actual files are copied to their destination folders (+ registered if necessary). Everything else should work properly as far as I can tell. I'll post here updates as soon as I find + fix the bug(s). Thanks. Best wishes, MDGx

  21. UPDATED · 7-31-2010 ___________________________________ Updates: Options 1, 2 + 3: removed WinME SHIMGVW.DLL 5.50.4134.100 [%windir%\SYSTEM] from options 1, 2 + 3. Does NOT work with or without WinME SHELL32.DLL 5.50.xxxx.xxxx [%windir%\SYSTEM]. Then you may need to re-associate BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PJPEG, PNG, TIF + TIFF files (again) with your favorite graphics/image/picture editor/viewer: http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#GRA if you changed their associations from Windows defaults (which is MSPAINT + KODAKIMG). See 6-26-2005 update further below for more details! Options 1, 2, 3 + 6: fixed Internet Zone Games (C:\Program Files\GameZone) install bug. [thank you PROBLEMCHYLD] Option 3: fixed Movie Maker (C:\Program Files\MoviMakr) install bug. [thank you PROBLEMCHYLD] Still working to fix the shortcuts (.lnk) creation bug. Will post here when done. ___________________________________ I have not tested recent 98SE2ME changes + updates because I don't have Windows 98 SE installed. 22. I (think) I fixed the Movie Maker + Game Zone bug, please test to see if it works properly. Tx.I also removed SHIMGVW.DLL from all options (1, 2 + 3). Please see UPDATES.TXT [7-31-2010 update] for more details: http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/updates.php I've looked thru older updates, and found out that in June 2005 we went thru the same problem: we tried shimgvw.dll with option 3 installed, and did not work. So I had to remove it [déjà vu ;_)]. More details in UPDATES.TXT. About the backup function not working... I need to (re)install Win98SE and test this. Until then, I probably won't know what's wrong, unless some1 else tests it and discovers the bug. This happened (same as MovieMaker + GameZone) probably because whenever I add/remove/update something, something else probably breaks, because all those batch + inf files are pretty much inter-related. I'll get on it as soon as I have enough free time. HTH
  23. Sorry I missed your post for so long. :-(98SE2ME is designed strictly for English editions of 98SE + ME (that's the only ones I have access to). 24. 1. No, MDAC is not part of this SP.MDAC is an optional component, and Gape included only necessary/essential components in the SP. MDAC can be installed [separately] from Maximus-Decim's package (MDDACU 2.0), updated March 2010: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=93448 or by hand [separate components + updates] at my site, where you can also find links for MDDACU 2.0: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#DAC 2. We haven't heard from Gape in a long time. :-( I've also been asked to take over this project, and I recommended erpdude8 as a better choice [he has experience with 98FE SP2 + 95OSR2 SP1, which are similar]. So I guess it's safe to assume Gape may not come back to update the SP, unless some1 knows different. HTH
