  1. is it possible to force taskbar thumbnails with high contrast theme so I don't need to use some alt tab replacement utility to see the thumbnails ?

    why?

    I discovered these:

    www.deviantart.com/eluinstra/art/Zenburn-High-Contrast-Dark-Theme-for-Windows10-552175543

about 3 years ago or more I discovered this one:

    www.deviantart.com/eversins/art/GreyEveTheme-Windows-10-11-High-Contrast-Theme-643504863

    _

    www.eightforums.com/threads/special-themes-aerolite-and-high-contrast-variations.25496/

but I'm currently in love with the Zenburn one, just make sure you go to chrome://flags and disable forced colors and then enable dark theme and you'll see the sites correctly and the rest of the OS will be dark themed.

I know the alternatives: uxthemepatcher and aero dark theme... but I can't find one like Zenburn

best sokution to see the thumbnails is to keep Aero ON, I know, but I'm sure it can be forced...

    so...

perfect solution: hight contrast with thumbnails

good solution: Aero Lite dark theme sure thumbnails will work (I tried copy-paste of .theme [Control Panel\Colors] into aerolite.theme but nothing... )

    ok solution: aero dark theme...

I think there is a way with something like

    SetWindowCompositionAttribute.exe class Shell_TrayWnd blur false

    winclassic.net/thread/166/running-classic-theme-based-themes

    www.sevenforums.com/themes-styles/342508-there-aero-high-contrast-theme-available.html

    but I'm doing tests...

    web.archive.org/web/20201230121231/http://www.glass8.eu/files/SetWindowCompositionAttribute.7z

    msfn.org/board/topic/174377-windows-10-how-to-make-taskbar-get-aero/page/2/

    SetWindowCompositionAttribute.exe class Shell_TrayWnd accent 0 0 0 0

    SetWindowCompositionAttribute.exe class Shell_TrayWnd blur true

    tried also..

    www.deviantart.com/anno0001/art/Taskbar-Blur-Toggle-0-2-0-412358153

without any luck, do you know if the thumbnails can be forced using some autoit script or any similar .exe and calling DwmEnableComposition ?

    THANKS

  2. Yes, a very underrated OS. The last amazing OS after XP.

When it comes down to speed Windows 8(.0) was very underrated. I also installed it on an old Netbook (Mini 1012) and it was the only OS that ran fluently. Windows 7 and 10 couldn't compare (11 obviously not)

Try Ex7ForW8 (Explorer from Windows 7 ) on it and see how the OS flies.

Modern OSes (10,11...) started with 8.0... well I wrote a lot about it... I don't want to say the same again, but I'm happy to see when people appreciate this nice OS and I hope we have a good KernelEx for it one day.

    Disadvantages of 1511:

    • No LTSB version
    • .NET Framework 4 is limited to 4.6.2. Most developers have already moved to .NET 5+ versions which do work.

I haven't done any performance tests

    are you sure? ;)

    don't believe the truth

Net Framework 4.8 can be installed on 1511 / 10586

The CF-28 is fanless and supports Win9x 3D Acceleration (i8xx series GPU).

The closest one to the CF-28, that I know of, is the CF-18. But some come with i915 (no Win9x 3D acceleration) and others with i8xx (Win9x 3D acceleration compatible). You have to be careful when buying one. The issue is that you don't often (if ever) find one over 1.2Ghz. Some, with the i8xx, come between 800Mhz and 1.2Ghz. I have seen one, with the i815, advertised at 1.6Ghz; but I think they must have made a typo, or something. It was the only one I've ever seen.

Both the CF-18 and CF-28 come with external VGA ports. Most older Toughbook/Toughpads do. One thing that the CF-18 does not have, is a parallel port (the CF-28 does). Both have a serial port.

I should point out that the CF-28 is Pentium III, and the top CPU speed is 1Ghz (some are slower). The CF-18 is Pentium-M. I haven't done any benchmarks, but an 800Mhz Pentium-M might out perform a 1Ghz Pentium-III. Also, the CF-28 tops out at 512Mb of ram. The CF-18 at 1.5Gb. The CF-28 is also running with USB1.1, and the CF-18 is at USB2.0.

There is a part number, on the bottom of these ToughBooks, that may help determine what GPU the laptop has. If you are looking on Ebay, some seller might not know how to find out what the GPU model is. So there is a chance, if they provide that model number (pictures), that you can find out yourself; provided they are selling you the one in the picture. You've gotta watch out, when some one is selling more than one. I've learned that the hard way, when buying thin clients.

First of all, thanks, this is gold for me.

Ok I can see both CF-18 Models as you say @awkduck:

    - 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
    - Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family

but... are you sure I'll have 3D acceleration ? Cause I have read this regarding to "Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller":

" -Driver does NOT support 3D acceleration it appears; attempting to play 3D games displays a glitched screen. "
    https://retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com/2019/06/intel-945gm-display-driver-for-windows.html )

I guess the Panasonic thoughbooks are the only fanless laptops with Pentium M & 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller, due to the metal case, right? Or these is a fanless smaller laptop with same/similar cpu&graphics?

@sonyu I found a couple of fanless laptops, near Win98 era. They are a bit bulky and most have no Win9x 3D support. The ToughBook and Getac laptops are mostly fanless. They have some Centrino Pentium-M and Core 2 Duo machines. The Core 2 Duo machines would probably need USB audio. The Pentium-M machines have AC97, and audio should work find with Win9x.

If you hunted, you might find a Panasonic ToughBook CF-28. It supposedly has an "Intel 830MG (Win9x 3D compatible)". They range between 1Ghz and 800Mhz. But it is a Pentium III. However, I bet it would run circles around the Wyse laptop. But the real problem would be the resolution. A 1024x768 maximum, with some models only supporting a 800x600 maximum. I guess it depends if it is a touchscreen or not.

They are probably not going to reach the display sizes you've mentioned. And they all have strange harddrive caddies. If you don't have a caddie, you can't install a harddrive. This is unlike many other laptop brands, where the caddie is more like a guide. These caddies have the drive connector in them. The caddie then connects to some a non standard connector, inside the laptop.

    @awkduck

Do you know if there is an alternative to CF-28 like these fanless laptops compatible with Windows 9x but with a VGA port in laptop ? (vga port for these are on the dockin station)

  6. A kernelex for w95 could be amazing @WinFX

also please, try to make usb 2 work in windows 95, I know it's possible cause @rloew done it back in the day:

    https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=443788&sid=60024bc16295245fc3274557940557a2#p443788

I was able to get USB 2 to work with Windows 95.
It took a combination of Files from 98FE, a Beta File, an Interrupt Driver I had to write, and some Patches to get it to work.

  7. is there any site to see stats about how many people really use Windows 10/11 Store/MetroUI in a PC or a laptop?

    Look at this:

ALL Metro-ified components of Windows ever since Windows 8.0.

    https://winclassic.net/thread/1652/list-metro-ified-components-windows

This is the major mistake since SP3. This can't be a replacement of an Old Win32 or whatever OS classic component. Metro needs to be a separated component, moving and replacing system parts to a metro based application is a mistake.

Luckily you can get almost everything back with the help of winclassic forum, but a shell divided into classic and modern metro components it's not a user friendly interface.

Anyway, programmed obsolescence will disappear, and MS will be forced to create new updates for 9x and NT5, why? there is no reason to get rid of old hardware on this warmed planet that is already saturated with tons of trash.

you do not believe it? look what a (G)oldie OS means:

    clicks-update-bsod-oh-dear-v0-zo4s8q5ukb

Please Bill, come back. Come back... it was all cool back in the day. Even the grey taskbar without themes. What happened?

neesd to be something related to logonui.exe, winlogon, Windows.UI.dll, Windows.UI.Cred, Windows.UI.Xaml, Windows.UI.Immersive, rundll32 and some registry keys. Can't be really difficult to have it working instead of default login screen.

    Thanks

Of course ! It's non-modded versions (the links were given for win32, mostly).

For Win 7/8 you need to use v.109 from these links.

Ok, thanks, which dll is involved in video playing?

  13. @windows2

    Looks great! thanks !! :)

but... my first fear (even more with Portable Office) is to lose the document that I'm writing when I spend time without saving it... are you sure it won't close Office while I'm using it, if it runs in background?

I started using taskkill especially to close several instances of a program without asking me to save...

Well I don't know exactly what you check with the .exe but one way to accomplish it will be to list opened windows title ( like this one but with a command line utility https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/winlister.html ) and if Word, Excel... it's not on the list you can close the process I think...

    like:

    tasklist /fi "IMAGENAME eq winword.exe" /v

    _____

Do you know if there is also the Watercolor (Whistler) default blue theme? The watercolor theme I've found on this thread seems to have a dark blue color instead of the default, also the caption bar buttons are small.

    This is what I want:

    de63dgb-54d58801-37b7-4505-af78-09bb953d

    and also the taskbar:

    1262395487.or.902881.gif

I have seen a Windows Blinds theme for Windows 2000, I don't know if it can be used with RP9 Uberskin on 98...

    https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/windowblinds/3178/

(.WBA can be opened like a .zip)

So this is the one I want:

    https://guidebookgallery.org/screenshots/whistler2257

So if somebody can create it, please... I don't currently have XP to do some tests, but with some modifications maybe the dark Watercolor can be changed to the default one (also with the default taskbar)...

Original Whistler Watercolor theme is available on Devianart and can be installed on XP without any modification (no theme patches or similar required)

After getting used to seeing the visual theme of Windows 8.0/8.1/10 during these years, I now see the Watercolor theme in a different way, since plain themes are modern these days or at least is how I feel them.

    Thanks !!

Edit: Ok, I just read this on @Tihiy website http://tihiy.net/uber/:

FAQ - Easy Windows XP skin porting

FAQ - Easy Windows XP skin porting
Q: How to get exact theme colors fast?
A: Go to Windows XP. Set theme you want. Go to regedit. Export [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors] to (Win9x/NT4) reg file.
Import in into your Windows 98. Logoff. You'll get colors you want. Save it under your theme name and viola!

    Q: How to get margins?
A: Theoretically, you must extract all those TEXTFILE\SOMETHING_INI and examine them.
Practically, you can left values from Windows XP, ZuneXP or other skin and tweak them if they're looking bad.

Q: How to port all bitmaps fast?
A: You can open .msstyles in Restorator and quickly drag-and-drop them over old bitmaps.
Some skins may have exactly same bitmap name or slighly varying.
You should only care about [StartButton] - it must contain text or image, otherwise it'll look dumb.

I recommend using ArtIcons Pro to easily deal with 32-bit images.

maybe I can underclock one Acer 5315 I have from 2006, I don't remember the Intel gpu it have, maybe GM965 ? Does it have w98 drivers? The fan from this model turns on and off automatically so it's not always on.. maybe this can be underclocked

Ok, there is no Libretto 100CT alternative netbook with same hardware + more ram and fanless, right?

so going back to the available fanless options, maybe I can buy fanless one (so not a high cpu) and  buy a PCMCIA GPU (so I can have a 1920x1080 monitor connected when I need more resolution and 3D)

The best match, I have seen, Is the Panasonic ToughBook CF-28. There are different models, some fall under the aim. It is also not as nice looking, compared to some of the others. You can get a Display with 1024x768 Intel 830MG (up to 32Mb), CPU Pentium-M (maybe III) @ 1Ghz-800Mhz, AC97 audio, Maximum memory of 512Mb, Up to 10hrs (with two batteries, 4hrs with one), 2 PCMCIA slots, but I can't tell for certain if it is USB 1.1 or 2. I'm guessing, if Pentium-M, it would be USB2. A 800Mhz Pentium III, might have USB1.1.

If it was USB1.1, a PCMCIA card would fix that. But I have bough some PCMCIA, cards that don't always work reliably.

The issue with a ToughBook, is getting one in good shape and including the harddrive caddie. A nice one can sometimes be too expensive. These machines have been used by the Construction, Police, and Military. Some of the used ones are a bit worn.

Being a nitpicker, I often dislike Laptops with on-board memory. If that memory goes bad, you are stuck with it; unless you are skilled in circuit board repair. The Toughbook has 256Mb on-board with a slot for 256Mb expansion.

So it doesn't have a fan?

Well, I just seen all Thinkpads have a connector for the dock, maybe I can find one with lower cpu

I should get motivated and test some of this.

Sonyu is aiming at 1Ghz, for the lowest speed. That makes it a little harder. But, the VIA laptop, near the beginning of the debate, likely performs near or less than a PIII 650-850Mhz mobile CPU. So that might be something for Sonyu to consider. But, using a 1.4Ghz as an example, throttling down to 800Mhz may still require a fan. If you could get a higher speed CPU down to 800-ish, it might work. I do wonder what a better Heat sink might do.

Your suggestion of the Intel GPU is probably the right path. Nvidia and ATI/Radeon GPUs will probably get much hotter. S3, Via, and Intel would be better.

I think I just need to try different VIA HyperionPro drivers versions and maybe a Kernel Ex or as much updates as I can on W98 or WME to get the gpu working

cause the comment of the HP user in vogons isn't bad at all.. I think there is an option to get it working...
