By disabling active desktop, you also gain the benefits of freeing some resources and a more stable system.
Indeed after disabling active desktop I have had less slowdowns. But in terms of statiblity, I still have crashes mostly on opera 11 run in kernelex and flash 10 too.
KernelEX is a big part of my web browsing since I need fairly new tools to download flash from my browser. Sometimes i'll be viewing a page when it will just BSOD on me
sometimes I can terminate opera and other times its too far gone.
Knowing all this means one thing. From what I've went through on 98se, I would say that its alomost perfect. Everyone here has done amazing things to push 98 into the next decade. But the thing I think more of us need to work on is the crashes, If we can fix these crashes then we will overcome the 9x bug of crashing.
Many of us already have some ideas, some are saying we need to fix more memory leaks. Others think that we need to create more tools and programs made for keeping
98 running smoothly. And some even talk about making kernelEx and the SP3 better for 98.
We have made many great steps in becoming well known and respected again for using 98. Most people would laugh or say we were idiots for not using Xp, But we showed them. We put up videos on youtube and several links to projects were people can get support and also contribute as well. In working together we can achive more then MS or any other development group has dared to dream, and we will stand together. Discouraging hack attacks and malware threats as we go. Those people will be no longer accepted and cast out to go somewheres else.
The more we push forward the more we will achive and stand together as one community which MS or any other person cannot touch. Dream Big

Thank you I will keep those on reference. I'm doing good now that i've solved the trackpoint problem. I downloaded the thinkpad configuration utility and turned it back on
anyways this will will be good when I get the X41 thanks.

Thats quite what I thought, anyway I guess settling for Xp isnt too bad for the x41. My r31 on the other hand is giving me problems since purchased because of a
bios password. Long story short, ran a progam i should have which didnt help and now I have no trackpoint support. Its disabled by default and I cant get into my settings
to change it.
Now I'm taking it to a guy so we can try and fix it, I have to use a usb mouse. Its just not my day.

Yes I have went and looked up drivers for this thinkpad, but sadly it only supports xp and above. Now I know there is some people who talk
about KernEx supporting Xp drivers and how they work on thier laptops. Does anyone know about this, it sounds like a long shot but could those xp drivers
really work with kernex in 98se??.

I needed to ask if anyone has got tablet support for win98/me. I am looking to upgrade my pc from thinkpad r31, to thinkpad x41 tablet. This is because I want more graphics and I like using the touchscreen pen and drawing plus makes it easier. Any advice??

Thanks, you and charles have helped alot. I got the Xnview so disabled active desktop, and also I can hold shift and open different files with diff programs. Faster and more convienent cool

Yes, I feel like this is a second home too. Everyone does a great job, granted sometimes no one is online. But most times people really like to help out.
I really want to further my training so i've taken up learning programing and coding. This may take awhile to get good at so for now I offer any advise I already
know, which isnt bad since I grew up knowing these systems. But hey, this is the best place to be and im really glad to be here

Any decent wallpaper manager will bypass both of those issues with AD disabled. I am using Wallmagician FWIW. Also any good image viewer (such as XnView for example) will do the job.
Thanks I was kind of thinking that but havent got to finding a good program.Im also looking for wifi and defragmentor programs with no luck.

Well that is a different way of doing things but I could probably get used to it. Do you know any good ways of disabling active desktop but still using its wallpaper formats ?

I need some help and I didnt know if anyone did this. But I cant get the open with option like win2k and XP. When I right click on a file it is only set to run under
One program. Making it take longer to open files having to goto the program and then openeing the file from there.
I also didnt know if anyone found a way to disable active desktop and use different formats of pictures without needing it. I think Xp is like that, the reason I ask is because sometimes having it on does cause alittle lag in performance. Anyway any help would be great on this.

To which made open with appear when I right clicked the picture to change the program and I got this error
This file does not have a program associeted to it to be used with it.
When I wanted to have a window and list of of programs to select from. anyone know this fix and active desktop please post here.

Win 2k and XP drivers are WDM, all right. But the implementation of WDM differs somewhat between those NT-Family OSes and the 9x/ME-Family. So sound drivers and USB drivers are the most likely to work, although some need WDMSTUB.SYS to work correctly. Video drivers are among the least likely to work across families, because the video subsystem implementation is hugely different across families, I'm sorry to say.
Is there some way we could implement Nt kernal into win9x/ME family ? There is a number of ideas to go off.
1. Replace win9x/ME kernal with Nt kernal from win2000 ( Probably would work the best )
2. Dual Kernal program could be created, it could manage kernal support modes, 9x/NT.
3. Combine two kernals into one stable/fast kernal thus improving many areas of performance with drivers and programs.
I think it would be a great idea to have one of these ideas made availible. However, I would not sacrifice any of my current performance just to have
NT.

Yeah I have always stayed away from those programs. It should be some problem with the programs files or settings. Im thinking an invalid string or commannd in one of the settings file maybe. I have never had this happen before on 98se so its strange.
Another strange problem, computer will shutdown but when told to restart it will hang.
But things are running better then I could have imagined, I am shocked with the graphics on this now when playing games, it runs at full speed with no skips or lagg.
Videos stream along about perfect, Every morning I wake up I'm happy to fire up my laptop. Its amost never boring now, Xp was boring and had no posibillty of improvement since microsoft slowed Xp down with so many services and bloatware, playing games was descent but had no real-time feeling to it. felt slugesh.
I am excited about win9x making new steps towards better computering, after dealing with XP for 8 years Im happy. Keep up the great work guys, and I hope someone will come along with a fix to these problems, thanks

Its a Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54mbps USB 2.0. They are commun on the intrent Alfa USB adaptor on amazon link.
I've had no problom really with its driver, but anytime I go to use its wifi utility it will crash ( well not really just displays that error untill I click ok then program crash )
It helps having the lastest version of SP on here so theres a network icon. But I would like to use that progam, I've tried installing an earier version too. But It always shots me that error. Which says page fault, I dont know if I can tweak any system files in its program folder. I have tried deleting some other files besides mayjor files it needs to run, but it had no effect either.

2000 vs. 98
I liked win2000 it was okay back when It was all I had. It had good internet using wifi,
Its alittle hard but gaming is possible on 2000, I think it dosent quite take advantage of hardware
Like 98se anyway. What I would do is test both and see which one you think is better
I felt win2000 performance degraded over time and I was always forced to reinstall at some point, even with no
viruses detected. Could win2k's system become currupt over time. I always thought it was strange

I want to thank everyone here who worked hard on all these projects. I know my computer has had a complete turn around compared to when I was on Xp. For the most part I mean playing games on 98 cause its great. I have never gotten such good FPS out of my fav. games. I'm very impressed now, I didnt think my pc was that good thanks guys

I've heard some people say windows 7 starter is better then 7 original. Has anyone tested this theory yet ? And If so what does that mean for us people running on hardware from 2003. Can we buy and install it or would we be wasting money on something to advanced.

The OP is in Uruguay. I guess that, like here in Brazil, the tax on money orders and on Western Union wire is constant up to a relatively high threshold, and then grows slowly for bigger amounts, so that sending small amounts of money by money orders or wire is not feasible as the tax might easily be 5 to 10 times the amount sent.

Hey guys, I have been through alot of this topic and have switched from firefox to Opera 11 mostly because 11 has extentions. And firefox has that lag to it that lasts for a few secs which someone else mentioned earlier.
Anyway, did the work around and installed it. Now the only thing I notice is when downloading, the info displays correctly except the speed. It wont show what speed it is going. Just square blocks. I thought id post this just to see if theres a fix. Thanks
UPDATE----- This truly amazing!! I have never had such a fast browser, On XP Opera wasnt the best at all for me, it just seemed slow so I never bothered trying the newer versions on 98se. But I'm very impressed with all the people who made this possible. Now I can stream videos with no problem unlike foxy. I'm finally happy with the internet part of 98se now, You guys are just giving me even more reasons never to go back to XP. Thanks

Sorry but I had to start a new topic because iv been having and annoying error which relates to the realtek 8187 chipset.
The following is to the error, this program has peroformed an illegal operation and will shut down. My drivers are fine, it works without opening the rtwlan program.
But when the program is opened it will cause this error, I hit close and the program terminated. If I dont hit close it will stay open and work just fine, but I'll have that error which I cant close or it will terminate the program. I need this program to switch from network to network.
Here is my error details, I'v already tried reinstalling it and have tried using kernelEX in win2k and winxp. But this software should support win98se because i check the sys requirments.

UPDATE ---- The only issue I have left is this. Other then this problem my system would be error free. I'm not sure if its related but my win98se will shutdown perfect but hangs when trying to restart it (hangs on shutdown screen when restarted)
It does this even if my wifi adapter isnt plugged in. I tried a number of MS patches already, If I can get these problems fixed i'll be set for good.

I hate to change the subject but I'm really getting fed up with the 98se networking and internet features. I'm wanting to replace it with win2k or even ME'S network and internet. But I forgot if that can be done, can someone help me on this. And maybe it could be in the SP or it can be an individual pack.
