  1. I ran the Vista tool and the Seagate tool, and neither reported any errors. The reason for running these checks was to see if there were any incipient HDD problems, and the results indicate there aren't.
  2. Thank you for your replies.
  3. I've been told by acquaintances that Memtest86 does a good job of checking memory. Is this the case, or are there better alternatives?
  4. The laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6000 with a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 SATA hard drive and the OS is Vista Home Premium. Does the native Vista disk checking utility do an adequate job, or should Seagate's 'SeaTools for Windows' be used? 5. The solution to this matter can be found here: AumHa Forums
  6. Four days ago I began using a Logitech cordless keyboard and cordless laser mouse, packaged as 'Cordless Desktop LX310 Laser'. Since then each time I boot the system (XP Pro SP2) I find this error message in Event Viewer: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7023 Date: 22/12/2007 Time: 1:25:00 PM User: N/A Computer: WDGC Description: The HID Input Service service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. What is the cause and meaning of this error and how can I rectify it?
  7. Thank you for your replies nitroshift, mara- and gosh.
  8. Am I able to run online A-V and Antispyware scans when XP Pro is in safe mode - that is, can I still connect to the internet when in safe mode?

    KB 936357.

    From the link I posted:
  10. WDGC

    KB 936357.

Need not be applied for a Pentium IV. For further information about KB 936357, see here: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=159050#159050

    KB 936357.

The most recent MS Updates gave KB 936357 as an update I should apply. However, my processor is a Pentium IV - should I still apply the update? KB 936357 A microcode reliability update is available that improves the reliability of systems that use Intel processors http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936357#
  12. Thank you for this information, I'll look into it.
  13. Apparently the answer to each of my questions is: Yes. http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsv...assistance.aspx http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...Assistance.html
  14. Since last posting I have learned the OS is still SP1 and has been running without a Firewall or A-V software since an OS reinstallation about a month ago. Enough said. An OS clean install, appropriate updating, ... is now the order of the day. Thank you to all respondents.
  15. Malware of some variety would seem most likely. As I said when starting this thread:
  16. Do Vista Basic and Vista Premium have the Remote Assistance facility, or similar, which is present in XP Home Edition? If so, is it possible for an XP Home Edition machine to connect to a Vista Basic or Vista Premium machine for purposes of "remote assistance"?
  17. An acquaintance has a laptop which has been connected to the internet with a dialup connection three times over the past three days and shows what, to me, are disturbing usage figures: Day 1 - time connected 10 hours, download 20MB, upload 103MB Day 2 - time connected 1 hour, download 5MB, upload 13MB Day 3 - time connected 6 hours, download 46MB, upload 17MB During these sessions, so I'm informed, the machine was mostly not being used by the owner, hence my concern when I saw the usage figures - especially the upload ones. I haven't any particular knowledge or experience in these matters, but it seems to me as though the machine is "owned". I'd appreciate the views of others regarding this, as because the system isn't showing any obvious signs of being infected, the owner isn't overly concerned.
  18. A friend has a machine which is running the French version of XP SP1. She doesn't have an internet connection at present, so I've undertaken to download a copy of the French version of XP SP2 for her, as the first step in updating the OS. However, I haven't been able to find a download site or link. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be most grateful.
  19. Thank you. I'll have a look at it.
  20. Disabling "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server" seems to have done the trick. I've started/restarted three times and the new time zone setting is still present.
  21. Thank you for your reply. As time synchronization is enabled, I'll see if the new time zone 'holds' when time synchronization is turned off.
  22. Using XP Home Edition SP2. I've changed the time zone by going to Date and Time Properties > Time Zone. However, the new setting isn't retained for long; sometimes after the first reboot, sometimes after the second or third or ... reboot, the system reverts to the original time zone setting. Is there something else I need do, or, if this is a known problem, a workaround ?
  23. I installed WMP 11 - was WMP 9 - and the videos now play correctly. Whatever was missing or corrupted in WMP 9 is apparently now present.
