  1. Sophy Since Microsoft will be supporting Vista for at least another year, I don't comprehend Google's reasoning for dropping support this early. Well third party developers do not need to adhere to Microsoft support timelines. Recent builds of Adobe Photshop do not support Vista x64. And Google was only allowing the non-Aero build to run on Vista for the last while anyway.
  2. Well in about a week and a half, Patch Tuesday arrives sans any updates for Windows 8 (as support ran out for the OS on the 12th of January). So after running System Restore, I will be running WSUS Offline and downloading February's updates for Server 2012. I'll check the bulletins for each patch and see which of the patches do not relate to server-specific code, and attempt running those. If my system updates successfully, great. I have unofficial support. If not and my system barfs, then I'll return to the last restore point. Then I'll decide if I stay with Windows 8, or go back to Windows Vista for another year (after all, my taxes will be done and I won't need any newer OS for another year.) I'll keep you posted on what happens. I may need to patch/edit the update.inf file somehow, but I'm not sure yet. This will be the first time that a Windows NT 6x based OS runs out of support, to try this experiment, so I'm eager to see what happens. Here's Greenhillmaniacs Repository of Server 2012 Patches that are Suitable for Windows 8 https://mega.nz/#F!ExhDEbDA!pUhzXKVp5-hgzvylW_btfQ
  3. That post removal was the last straw, I had to register and say something. I did try to reply after the post disappeared. Mine has also disappeared or was never approved, one or the other. If nothing else, here is the best quote from that post, preserved for posterity. It sums up the whole issue of XP compatibility in PM up from beginning to end, from dropping support in the main code line to the POSReady block: "...have gone from really liking PaleMoon to simply hating it less than all of the other options..." well said, whoever you were! Darn, I wish you had the rest of his post, and yours ... lol. Oh well. I really liked his, and I never got to read yours.
  4. You saw that too. I wanted to reply to the guy. However, Moonchild has reversed his decision. https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=10829&start=40
  5. Well I run the original Windows 8 and that's no longer supported. I wonder if I should upgrade ???
  6. The reason it was suggested NOT to recommend Server 2008 (original release) was that the OP didn't want to spend enormous amounts on an upgraded OS. Well Server 2008 is expensive, no? Actually is the original build even available?
  7. Here it is: http://filehippo.com/download_security_essentials_vista/51103/
  8. If you go find the MSE version for Windows Vista (version 4.4.304.0). That one will install on Windows Server 2003. Filehippo should still have it
  9. Yeppers, I used the MSE x64 build for Vista/7 and that worked with Windows XP x64 Edition. Don't forget to visit 5eraph's updates site for a cohesive method of downloading updates after April 2014 up to July 2015. I think he has it integrated into one pack, but failing that, you can use these updates: http://wp.xin.at/xp-x64-post-mortem-updates
  10. So if I have this right Jaclaz, if I'm not on a Windows NT domain, I would be completely unaffected, is that right (or am I misreading it).
  11. OK first off I probably pulled a stupid. I have the Windows Mail client from Vista running on Windows 8. One thing I really noticed is how fast the send/receive dialog flipped by when I engaged it. Recently though, there was an authentication issue on Zoho's end (Zoho is my mail provider). Thinking it was something on my end, I attempted recreating the accounts, compacting the database, and even running CCleaner. Now the Zoho issue is resolved but I notice that the send/receive process is noticeably slower. It appears that messages are about to come down, even when there are none. The progress bar goes across regardless, whereas before, it was lightning fast, even when messages were downloaded. I have deleted the WinMail program folder, reinstated it, reregistered the app to work with Windows 8 mail defaults, and recreated my accounts, but it's still a tad slower (not obtrusively but enough to know it's not like before) Any takers? One thing I can think of having done that may have added to the situation was be removing Internet Explorer 10. I not only disabled it from Add/Remove Features, but I also removed the payload on disk with the DISM command. So the IE program folders have some of the rendering stuff still installed, but the browser itself is gone. (I have since attempted reinstalling Internet Explorer 10 with the updates, but no improvement there.)
  12. OK. It was to be more or less plagurized from the Windows 8 Forum that Brink runs, but I'll look and see if there's something duplicated first. Thanks Noel.
  13. Just an update if anyone had a similar issue. I'm pretty sure I experienced those symptoms because my VS was built while I was running it on Windows 8.1 in a VM. And now I'm using it in Windows 8. It works with Taskbar Tweaker though in every other respect.
  14. So why would you want to disable SFC and Windows Resource Protection? I understand if you want to preplace a protected file, but on an ongoing basis?
  15. Isn't that basically what ReactOS is Vinifera?
  16. In removing the Apps and AppStore, do you have a tutorial on how you did that? I removed the WindowsApps directory, and concealed most elements with Classic Shell and defeating UAC. Does that do it all?
  17. I used DOSBox, and I had to set the frameskip higher to stop the jittery sound and video on games like DukeNukem3D (I like the oldies). Are you saying that this works for sure to remedy that issue? I set my output renderer to "surface" I think.
  18. Thanks for all of your help on this. And now with Windows 8 being EOL, I've completely turned off and disabled the Windows Update Service, cleared out the Software Distribution folder, and Windows Defender still updates on schedule.
  19. Not to derail the thread (but at least it has to do with Windows 8 on a tablet), does the tablet just assign some of it's RAM as drive storage, or is there just a small SSD inside? I'm thinking as in the Asus tablets.
  20. Would this be the spot to post registry tweaks for getting Windows Mail (from Vista) to be FULLY integrated/associated with Windows 8?
  21. That's what I'd like to know. Dibya seems to be aiming for the same thing with Windows XP.
  22. Which means once updates are finished installing there'd be no slow downs. I really like Vista (but I liked XP x64 Edition better). I'm REALLY enjoying Windows 8 x64 though
  23. No worries. I found a solution: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/346835-cant-modify-registry-key-even-after-changing-permissions.html
