  1. On July 4, 2018, over in the MS Answers Community, a good citizen suggested "MS Utility against Office https://diagnostics.outlook.com/#/" . Well, I have now run that utility a number of times, and on the latest Update of my O365 (after running the utility), I have only 21 Warnings, and those are three Warnings for each of seven registry keys. So the situation is improved. Using the tools provided by dencorso and others in THIS thread, I have now gone into the Permissions of each of those seven registry keys and added Everyone - Full Control. So let's see what happens the next time there's an Update to O365. Stay tuned. (And that suggested MS utility is clearly good for a LOT of situations.) By the way, those seven registry keys are: Software\Classes\CLSID\{3050F667-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}\InprocServer32 Software\Classes\CLSID\{3050F819-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}\InprocServer32 Software\Classes\CLSID\{AE24FDAE-03C6-11D1-8B76-0080C744F389}\InprocServer32 Software\Classes\CLSID\{25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-00AA00686F13}\InprocServer32 Software\Classes\CLSID\{3050F391-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}\InprocServer32 Software\Classes\CLSID\{0BE35204-8F91-11CE-9DE3-00AA004BB851}\InprocServer32 Software\Classes\CLSID\{0BE35203-8F91-11CE-9DE3-00AA004BB851}\InprocServer32
  2. Den - I'll try ... but you know how hard that is for me.
  3. Does it mean anything that the July POS updates now have new dates at < MS UPDATE > ? MS is listing them as dated Tuesday and yesterday. So what did we install last week? (I try and I try but I just can't keep up.)
  4. Dclem - good point. I did my best to avoid the trial version and to stick with the long-term free (and essentially passive) version, but I might not have succeeded, as I got a few popups that I had a few days (not 14 days) left on my trial version. So, if I have time this weekend, I might try again, with only 2.2.1.1043. Thanks.
  5. Dclem and osan - thanks for the links. I spent more time this weekend puttering around. Bottom line is that MalwareBytes will NOT work any more on my PC, and I uninstalled it. However, MBAE is working. Go figure,
  6. Dclem - in fact I do have MB 2.2.1.1043 but my last MBAE is older than yours. Can you PM me 1.12.1.90? I wish only to use MB the same way you do - manual scans of new junk. Many thanks.
  7. SD73, heinoganda and Dave-H -- thanks for your patience. I've UNinstalled Malwarebytes and will just let that sit for now. If no more brain-freezes or BSODs the next few days, I'll leave well enough alone. Heinoganda - FYI that my Avast has those three exclusions in File Shield from before. I think SD and Dave-H are right that MB and Avast+XP just won't play nicely any more. I hope that by now Avast is doing almost everything that MB is doing.
  8. Heinoganda - my oleaut32.dll file matches your specs. However, I did not shut off Avast when I installed KB4134651-v2 and KB4339291. I can UNinstall those two, shut off Avast and REinstall those two. However, how in tarnation do I shut off Avast? I can "Disable shields", but is that enough? Is it possible to install those two in Safe Mode (no Avast)? Thanks.
  9. Dave-H - wise words, and shall do now. Meantime, a few posts above, Heinoganda mentions "KB4018556-v2", and I see "KB4018556" newly installed in my list above. Do I need to uninstall that and get a special hot-bod version of it from heinoganda?
  10. CORRECTION IN BOLD AND SEE NOTE AT END -- Sorry to report that although heinoganda's hot-rod-mod version of KB4134651-v2 seems OK -- no Properties-Find problems -- my MalwareBytes remains sodded. It does not boot up correctly on reboots and is then not accessible even though the processes MBAMService.exe, mbam.exe and/or mbamtray.exe might be running. And I've been getting a bunch of PC brain-freezes and BSODs. Is it finally time to move the duct tape (and my emails) to my Win 7 machine? Anyway, here's my recent Update History list, which misses whatever I installed manually, like - KB4339093 for IE8 and - Bersaglio's link to the Office 2003 Compatibility 2007 update and - heinoganda's hot-rod-mod version of KB4134651-v2 The list is in reverse chronological order - most recent installation at the top. The top (most recent) three appeared by themselves after the hot-rod-mod version of KB4134651-v2 so I installed them. 11. Heinoganda - just sent you a PM requesting the latest hot bod copy of KB4134651-v2. Sshh - don't tell anyone. Thanks.
  12. All - Still a few glitches, I uninstalled KB4134651-v2, leaving in place May's installation of KB4134651, which must have been heinoganda's hot rod version. MalwareBytes works but I had to uninstall the latest version (which just would not cooperate) and re-install a version from late last year to get there. To check any new exe file, I can right-click and run MB against it, but the MB icon is not appearing in the tray. And it is constantly bugging me to upgrade to the new version. Shortcuts - Properties - Find location is working. However, just now, Firefox kept crashing on open. And I've gotten a few BSODs, which I think has happened again because my remote reboot (using Teamviewer) just now has merely disconnected my XP machine from the universe without restarting it. Wonderful old friends here, I hate to say it, but keeping my XP going is like nursing a decrepit dog. Soon ...
  13. heinoganda and dencorso - thanks again. MalwareBytes is working. But I kept uninstalling everything and now I'm back to Win 2000.
  14. Den - I can't even remember which shoes I'm wearing. And MSFN can't remember anything between February and June. Please humor me - how can I again get heinoganda's modded KB4134651? (And was this the time I suggested asking Moe on the corner?)
  15. Looks like I'm OK except that now MalwareBytes is crashing again, and this is occurring on both my "production" XP machine (with duct tape) and my virtual XP machine (XP Mode in my Win 7 machine). It could be the updates, or maybe an update to Avast conflicting with MalwareBytes, or who knows? (But in an effort to fix this revived MB problem, I set my CryptoPrevent to "None" and rebooted, but that did NOT help. so the cause is not CryptoPrevent.)
  16. Hey - what about https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/07/09/legacy_windows_ransomware/ ?
  17. Thomas S., MaterSystem and Robinek - Now, on XP, after running Thomas S's .reg above and rebooting, if I go to howsmyssl.com, I'm "probably OK". (Not sure if that's a compliment, but I'll take what I can get.) And emails to my two email addresses picked up by Outlook Express 6 still seem to work. My Internet Options - Advanced tab shows that I'm still using SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2. However, on my Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine, without having made any changes, I see that I am using only TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 because SSL 3.0 is UNchecked. So, on XP, in Internet Options - Advanced, should I UNcheck SSL 3.0, or will my OE6 throw down its hands and yell, "Enough already - YOU do it"? ADDED - DIFFERENT GEM OF WISDOM - By the way, I have long been going to https://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate on Firefox but displaying it in FF on an IE Tab. That has usually worked well, unless I first need to install the latest IE update manually because the CPU is racing.
  18. Thomas S - Ah, you already answered my question. Thanks,
  19. MaterSystem and Robinek - In my Internet Options, I see the option to turn off SSLv2 (already off) and SSLv3 (still on). However, how do I turn off RC4 and DES? (And if my system suddenly turns into a disconnected adding machine, how do I turn them back on?) Thanks.
  20. Mathwiz and Dave-H - thanks for your tips. But there's something plain old loveable about XP beginning to fall apart. Like an old dog with arthritis, or using carbon paper on a manual typewriter. And there's the sheer fun of going to MSFN and having alarms go off all over the place. Why give that up?
  21. Dave-H and heinoganda, for what it's worth, my certificate error messages are at this link: <LINK> Heinoganda - thanks for clarity on OE6 = IE6. yes, that means I need a new email app, but then I should quit struggling with XP and move on to my 7 + 10 machine. That would make me sad. Unless you know of an OE8.
  22. Dave - H - thanks for link - very helpful! However, I was able to confirm that the .reg was needed to turn on TLS 1.2 in my IE8. And, now, that has been done. I am now seeing more embedded pictures in emails. But emails from MSFN still trigger the certificate warning. (Oh the irony!) From your link, my IE8 is Good due to new use of TLS 1.2, but it remains Bad in one way: "Insecure Cipher Suites. Bad. Your client supports cipher suites that are known to be insecure: "TLS_RSA_WITH_3DES_EDE_CBC_SHA: This cipher suite uses 3DES which is vulnerable to the Sweet32 attack but was not configured as a fallback in the ciphersuite order. "TLS_RSA_WITH_RC4_128_SHA: This cipher suite uses RC4 which has insecure biases in its output." Can that be fixed with a pill?
  23. MSFN sends me emails when there are new posts here. I select and then open those emails on my Outlook Express 6 on my XP machine (on which I ran heinoganda's cert_updater twice in the last week). Ironically, I get a certificate error message when I select or open the emails from MSFN in Outlook Express 6. But that's just recent after not being an issue for some time. After just looking at the emails, I click on the link in the last one to come here, and it opens in my Firefox ESR 52.8.1 (32-bit) without a problem. Most emails in my OE6 do not generate the certificate warning, but (after running cert_updater) many from large companies do not display embedded pictures or logos - I get an empty box with a small red X. I have run all the recent XP updates from Microsoft update and our other thread, but I have not yet run the .reg to add TLS 1.2 to my Internet Explorer. Also, I'm just a tourist looking for the Statue of Liberty and ended up here by mistake, so a lot of the good stuff in this thread is over my head. What do you think? Yes, I'm uber something, but I don't think any of my Gwynneth Paltrow security is directly related to this. Although what do I know? Thanks, as always.
  24. Dave-H -- From my important duct-taped machine: 1) I just checked, and the version of oleaut32.dll that is still in C:\WINDOWS\system32 is 5.1.2600.7475 last modified April 13, 2008, so SFC apparently did not replace it with 5.1.2600.5512. SFC might be a tad confused. (Is the last modification date of April 13, 2008 correct for version 5.1.2600.7475 ?) 2) I wasn't sure whether I ran WindowsXP-KB4134651-x86-ENU_oleaut32dll.exe (which I had already downloaded and has last modified date of May 9, 2018), so I just now checked Belarc, and it says, "X KB4134651 on 5/10/2018 (details...) Reinstall!" So - what do you think?
