I have just tested it and have unfortunately to confirm your observation. Although there is the compatibility string of Firefox {ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384} inside the code of the About: Menu custom button, the menu of all about: pages does not open in Serpent 52. The button was created many years ago, though. Therefore, it definitely was developed for much older Firefox versions (< 52). That's presumably why it is still working in New Moon 28. But there are still alternatives in the form of extensions for Serpent 52 which can be tested. I will have a look at that later.

@dmiranda The easiest and most convenient way to add such an About Menu button to Serpent 52 is to use the Toolbar Buttons 1.1.1 extension. This extension comes with many toolbar buttons or rather tons of them. :buehehe: Although this extension is old, most of the toolbar buttons still work in @roytam1's browsers. One of them is the button about:about which is still working in Serpent 52. Here are two screenshots.

You can download the extension Toolbar Buttons 1.1.1 via the Classic Add-ons Archive. I will write an article about this extension very soon. BTW, I already wrote about Toolbar Buttons 1.1.1 and the about:about button here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/182647-my-browser-builds-part-3/?do=findComment&comment=1225677

Hi! I'm trying it now in sp52, but for some reason the menu won't pop up in my setup. Is there anyway to debug it? I checked the console, just in case, but nothing. Thanks!

Actually, the About: Menu custom button should work in Serpent 52, too. When I am back at my desktop computer, I will have a look at this. In New Moon 28, however, I can definitely confirm that this custom button works as it should. Generally, most custom buttons tested by me should work in both browsers. But, of course, we all know the proof is in the pudding. :P

@AstroSkipper did you fork this button? I have been using one for many years now called "About:about Button"

which does almost the same thing. It's in the CAA. With this one I was able to delete the button from the UI because

it also shows up in the tools menu as a drop down. There are 407 Buttons in the CAA that don't require having

"Custom Buttons" being installed. They install as an *.xpi.

As I already explained, I try to use as few extensions as possible, as they have a greater impact on memory and tend to cause compatibility problems. If features can be retrofitted by custom buttons, I use them instead of extensions. But I have to admit that I still install far too many extensions, but of course I also use them. As everyone knows by now, I'm also a big fan of extensions. :thumbup The About: Menu custom button was created by the well-known developer LouCypher long ago. I just modded it a bit as described in my article.

Are you saying that the NM28XP (Palemoon 28) has something to do with UXP? NM28XP (Palemoon 28) made using UXP?

Yes. All about @roytam1's browser editions can be read here in this thread. And we had recently discussions about their diferences. Simply perform a search in this thread! In any case, New Moon 28 and Serpent 52 are UXP browsers.

I meant why post NM28XP build 20240406 if there are no changes in it?

Apparently, you have not understood my quotes and the conclusion to be drawn from them. Your statement does not correspond to the facts. With the release of NM28XP build 20240406, there were indeed changes, however,  all coming from the the UXP platform. smilie_denk_24.gif

  7. About: Menu - A custom button for accessing all about: pages via a toolbar menu

The About: Menu custom button, created by the well-known developer LouCypher long time ago, is another useful one. It gives the user the opportunity to access any desired about: page by clicking onto the corresponding entry inside a toolbar button menu. This menu contains all entries which are listed on the about:about page, but it is more convenient to access via a toolbar button.

    Here is a screenshot:

    Hqc1x.png

I only changed the tool tip text and replaced the image of the toolbar button icon by the one from the Add-ons Manager. I should mention at this point that the button does not work in Serpent 52, but in New Moon 28. Thanks to @dmiranda for reporting! I uploaded the About: Menu custom button as an HTML file for an offline installation.

Here is the download link of my modded custom button About: Menu, credits, of course, to its great developer LouCypherhttps://www.mediafire.com/file/o931jc1a3e7l9zj/About-_Menu_4-7-24__021410.htm/file

Simply open this HTML file in a browser tab and click the embedded custom button link for About: Menu! For the installation of this button, as for all others too, the extension Custom Buttons is required and has to be installed first. You can get it from this post: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183923-extensions-and-custom-buttons-for-uxp-browsers-corrections-modifications-adjustments-and-special-recommendations/?do=findComment&comment=1226328

On the website https://rtfreesoft.blogspot.com/search/label/newmoon a new version of NM28XP build 20240406 has appeared and it says “No official Pale-Moon changes picked since my last build". Why then post this build 20240406 if there are no changes in it? Or are there any changes? Interesting to know what?

Right! "No official Pale-Moon changes picked since my last build", but "Official UXP changes picked since my last build".

About this, I've just noticed from the Event Viewer that I still have lots of crypt32 errors due to the Microsoft Certificate Updater running

    aA2o5aR.png

    Biayv3G.png

So I'm just gonna uninstall the Microsoft Auto Certificates Updater component given that not only it's no longer useful but it's even "harmful" in the sense that it would be throwing lots of errors for every time it tries to update the root certificates (and fails) in the background, so I invite anyone who still has this component to go "add or remove programs" -> "windows components" and remove it

I removed that years ago, it is of course now completely useless.

Me, too. When I had fixed all errors in my Windows XP system years ago, I also removed this Microsoft Auto Certificates Updater component.  And bye, bye error messsges in the Event Viewerbye.gif

  10. If I post custom buttons here, regardless of whether they were created by me or by someone else, or in some cases, modded or fixed by me, then this results in a clear advantage for the user. These custom buttons have definitely been tested by me and are compatible with the Custom Buttons extension and @roytam1's UXP browsers. :P And most probably compatible with Basilisk and Pale Moon, too. Isn't that a great service? spanachee.gif ssuper5sur5.gif

Perhaps you could consider to split topics and keep custom buttons and extensions separate, to tidy things up, make them easier to find and read and avoid potential confusion.

Creating this thread was complex and very time-consuming. Right from the start, I paid attention to a good and clear structure. In the first three posts of this thread, I made a clear differentiation between extensions and custom buttons:

    Introductory post: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183923-extensions-and-custom-buttons-for-uxp-browsers-corrections-modifications-adjustments-and-special-recommendations/?do=findComment&comment=1226243
    Extensions: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183923-extensions-and-custom-buttons-for-uxp-browsers-corrections-modifications-adjustments-and-special-recommendations/?do=findComment&comment=1226244
Custom buttons and other articles: https://msfn.org/board/topic/183923-extensions-and-custom-buttons-for-uxp-browsers-corrections-modifications-adjustments-and-special-recommendations/?do=findComment&comment=1226245

All listed entries there have been linked to their corresponding posts. Thus, all is easy to find. In my opinion, that will have to suffice. BTW, such kind of structure is rather rare to find here in this or other forums (actually fora), if I may say so. :P But thanks for your opinion! :)

  12. There are actually a lot of extensions or custom buttons that are just waiting to be given a new lease of life. vaccin.gif Therefore, I would also very much welcome it if more users of UXP browsers who have the appropriate skills would fork and develop extensions or custom buttons:) Strictly following the rule: the more, the better. :P

A lot of the best extensions have been forked since Mozilla abandoned XUL extensions. Many on PMs extension list are forked or built new.

Then there's TBs extensions and JustOff's. Even Matt (A$$HOLE) Tobin forked a few. Moonchild for a while changed things for PM to only allow installation of extensions  containing PMs GUID. He also reversed that since I and many others know how to edit the "install.rdf" files.

There are many more useful extensions in the "Classic Addons Archive" built by "JustOff" (hope he's still alive) that need coders to take over and update them and to keep them updated. Being 83 YO it can;t be me.

Also I've been using the "custom_buttons-0.0.5.8.9-fixed8-signed" addon since Feb 2020.

TBH, I have known all this for a long time. That's why I listed all these sources in my first post in this thread. BTW, I have forked extensions too and made some fully working again. Not only uBlock Origin Legacy but also, for example, Check My IP Address & Location. But what I am trying to do at the moment is to get back the user's focus on custom buttons which are really great and deserve it.

That's quite a bit of registry corruption, assuming all those ten system files had indeed become unregistered.
I never use uninstallers, I don't trust them not to damage the system.
If a program won't uninstall using its normal uninstallation mechanism, I uninstall it by hand, manually removing its files and registry entries, VERY carefully!
Whatever caused the files to become unregistered, it presumably happened on my other machine too, which makes it even more of a mystery.
    :dubbio:

If different machines show the same error, then a programme is most probably the causer which is used on both computers. Just an assumption which has to be proved, of course.
Focus on things that you have done the same way on both machines! uniforme4.gif

  15. Custom buttons - An underrated alternative or supplement to extensions

Although most custom buttons are old or even very old, many of them do still work in @roytam1's browsers, Basilisk or Pale Moon. :thumbup These custom buttons have unfortunately fallen completely out of the focus of users. jexplique.gif Many don't know them at all or have simply never used them. nimportequoi.gif I think this is a great pity, as they are a simple, resource-saving and therefore efficient way to add missing or advanced functions to browsers in which a compatible Custom Buttons extension can be installed. Most custom buttons are rather specialised and add features to the browser that cannot even be retrofitted with extensions. The reason is very simple, such legacy extensions weren't and won't be developed any longer to the extent that it once was.smilie_denk_24.gif Only a few are still maintained, and a very few are developed from scratch. In these days, only webextensions are developed. Anyway! In my browser profiles, the Custom Buttons extension is always the first one I install and then all my favourite custom buttons. Only then are all further required extensions installed. :P

Thanks, where would we be without NirSoft!
    :worship:

This does beg the question though, how do files get unregistered in the first place?!
    :dubbio:

I assume that some parts of the registry have been damaged, or simply some entries have been deleted by whatever. And TBH, I appreciate tools from Nirsoft. Many of them are inside my repair and first aid folder for troubleshooting and fixing. :P

  17. Re-registering of dll files is a very safe and in a lot of cases successful method in Windows XP to fix errors of whatever kind. :) I use different tools for that. One is the Nirsoft tool RegDllView for doing that in a more convenient way: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/registered_dll_view.html
It offers additional, useful features. All is descibed on its homepage. Another nice, small tool to register or unregister dll files or ActiveX controls is Register Toolhttps://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Registry-Tweak/Register-Tool.shtml

Pref Toggler - A custom button for toggling user-selected preferences in about:config

The Pref Toggler custom button, created by the great developer srazzano long time ago, is one of my favourite ones. It gives the opportunity to switch very specific preferences, which have been selected and configured by the user first, much more quickly and clearly than using the about:config page. The controlled preferences by Pref Toggler can be Boolean, String or Integer ones. In addition, this custom button allows direct control over the current state of these user-selected preferences. A tool bar icon in the form of a glowing bulb Glowing-bulb.png gives the user an additional indication that some preferences are not in their default state. I only changed the icon images of this custom button inside its code in terms of size for better fit in the tool bar and the main interface window. Here are some screenshots to get an impression how the user interface of Pref Toggler looks like and works:

    This is the main interface:

    Pref-Toggler.png

Clicking onto the button "Edit List", you can add, edit or delete preferences to be controlled:

    Pref-Toggler-2.png

The bulb is glowing Glowing-bulb.png due to controlled preferences which are not in their default state:

    Pref-Toggler-3.png

The bulb is not glowing Not-glowing-bulb.png because all controlled preferences are in their default state:
    :
    Pref-Toggler-4.png

Toggling Boolean preferences is done by a left-click and editing String or Integer preferences by a middle-click or right-click:

    Pref-Toggler-5.png

Pref Toggler is indeed a great custom button and definitely recommended by me. g0495.gif I uploaded the Pref Toggler custom button as an HTML file for an offline installation.

Here is the download link of my modded custom button Pref Toggler, credits, of course, to its brilliant developer srazzano notation.gif: https://www.mediafire.com/file/b069qa1jwallwqe/Pref_Toggler_02.04.2024.html/file

Simply open this HTML file in a browser tab and click the embedded custom button link for Pref Toggler!

    Greetings from Germany, AstroSkipper matrix.gif

I changed the image links in my article about Pref Toggler due to access problems caused by the image hoster I use. BTW, if you may wonder where the user-selected preferences are stored, it's in a preference of Pref toggler in about.config called extensions.custombuttons.PrefToggler.prefList. I will also add this information to my article.
