  1. AD stuff will come across in a system state backup, but hyper-v will need to be exported (via the command line, no less - GUI isn't complete). File Services is also more of a manual move, especially file shares and permissions there. I find it best to use a 3rd party tool for this (I prefer SecureCopy because it works and can be rented). DHCP can be backed up and restored easily, and DNS should be AD-integrated. Print services will come over with some script work (check out \Windows\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\ on your print server). If you can, it is 100% better to have both machines up on the domain at the same time. Otherwise, this is more like a disaster recovery exercise than a replacement.... and I'd prefer never to have to migrate to a new server like that, ever. Ultimately, though, you'd be better off virtualizing ALL of these roles on hyper-v (assuming not a cluster)..... then server migrations would be simple VHD exports from one box, imports to another, and potentially integration component upgrades if necessary once booted on the new box. Just sayin' .
  2. Yup, please be aware hiren's is full of warez copies of non-redist (and some copyrighted) software. I would suggest using something else, at least here.
  3. No, once it's imaged at that version it will deploy as such. Also, the product keys in use between Professional and enterprise can be different (MAK vs KMS), so why anone creating an image of enterprise when licensed for professional makes no sense. At this point, if you don't have Enterprise licenses, that image is of little use to you.
  4. Considering nLite is for personal use only, that would probably be a bad idea if this isn't personal use. Honestly, the best way to make installing XP faster is to image it into a WIM and use WDS to deploy. That changes the game a bit though.
  5. Please don't take this as rude, as I don't mean it to be, but from the forum rules:
  6. So something is screwing up your download - it would at least explain the error, but not why you can't download it. Are you downloading it in some special way?
  7. While I understand the being poor predicament, it's not an excuse for software piracy. Maybe if you were stealing something like food I might understand, but software, in no cases, is critical for sustaining life. Buy it when you can, and use something you can afford (there are lots of things out there that are free, including operating systems) when you cannot. We don't condone or support software piracy (for any reason), for those who find this thread in the future. User banned for violation of rule 1.a - if you're gonna violate rule 1.a, don't do it in public for goodness' sakes. We're not the internet or software police, but we will uphold our rules about posting on this site whilst you are here.
  8. Optical drives on my machine work fine with the developer preview build, so I suspect it's more a "your machine" problem for some reason with the Win8 DP than a Win8 problem specifically. Not sure what it would be, though.
  9. Well, password synchronizations are done on the PDC emulator first, and then replicated out. If you look at the event logs for both, I'm guessing one (or both) of them are having issues. There should be event viewer interesting'ness on the DCs, at least, and maybe the clients too.
  10. Well, the animation is in ntoskrnl.exe, which is the OS kernel (it is also stored in other variants of this file, potentially, depending on which your machine chooses to boot). If you aren't in testsigning mode, this is very hard to work around without following the guides set forth elsewhere in the customizing Windows section. Sounds like you missed something, if you're having signature issues after modifying the kernel.
  11. Well, I've lurked on this thread long enough. From the EULA for RT7Lite: Given this tool is not posted on this forum, and any infringements are not happening on this forum directly, I cannot in good conscience take any action against this user or this application, short of notifying the original content owners (which I believe has already been done). Closing this thread, as this discussion does not belong here.
  12. Well, no, no SP3 - not needed. As to updates, you'll still get security updates, but no more free support options (all support becomes paid), and any bugs found in Vista after that point will not be fixed.
  13. Then you'll likely have to write it yourself as previously posted, unfortunately. GPO software push is the "barebones" solution, and the recommendation when logic is involved is to move up to SCCM.
  14. The only time you'd get it is if the computer account password no longer matches the one in AD. If it's happening frequently, is there something specific you're doing with your DCs (or with your Win7 clients) that would cause the passwords to be out of sync?
  15. What tool are you using to modify your OS - vLite, RT7Lite, etc?
  16. Well, considering one of the omissions in the developer preview was the ability to close metro apps (known issue, gesture support wasn't completed until a later build) and quite a few IE and other app menus were not fully built or finalized, the fact you had these specific issues with metro IE was expected. TAP customers have had a later build (two, in fact, I believe) and they are much more complete. Yes, the developer preview needed some work, but that was also well known - this build was for developers to start getting exposure and experience writing to WinRT and for metro, not as a general-purpose test OS.
  17. They remain open as in you can still connect to them inbound to your computer from other machines on these ports, or they remain open in that you can make outbound connections on those ports to other machines?
  18. If you aren't being prompted at boot for a TPM pin (and are only prompted when changing the boot options), you can simply pave the disk using the installation media and reinstall. Anything on a bitlockered volume must be formatted away, of course, and can only be saved when booted into the OS (or if you have the recovery key offline), but getting rid of it isn't too hard.
  19. And I totally, 100% disagree because the vast majority of the world doesn't use machines like we do, but that's what makes discussions like this fun . It will indeed be interesting to see this thread in 10 years in the light of what actually does happen.
  20. That's perfectly viable - I do like Linux personally as well, I just spend most of my time in the Windows world due to my employment.
  21. To each his or her own - I for one do actually prefer metro, and use it in my day-to-day. Use what works for you, just be aware of the direction Microsoft is going once this hits beta and RC - if that's not for you, I guess you'll have to reconsider your use of Windows at some point.
  22. You might also want to consider Group Policy Preferences for this, rather than user vbscript, to avoid permissions issues (not to mention having to maintain multiple scripts).
  23. Why not extract your RTM ISO to a folder, download/extract SP1 and place those update files in the \Updates folder, and re-ISO your Office source?
  24. Have you put the system into test signing mode and signed the driver with a test cert first?
  25. Ah yes, PEBCAK and ID10T errors on helpdesk tickets were common many years ago .
